Marched on a daily basis down that very road. 1965; Honor Squadron; 3360th. I can still hear 'counting cadence' as we marched to the chow hall. Capt Dome, and Airman Brockman. And our Red Rope Herman, who was a Michigan guy. If any of you guys (no women then) see this, would like to see your posts?

This overgrown area was a multi-purpose "recreation" facility area in 1989.
There were restaurants and a video game parlor in that longer building. I cannot remember what was on the back side, but I think that was some kind of warehouse.
I remember dumping many quarters into pinball and video games after having a burger and fries at the restaurant in that area... when I had free time to do so.
On one side of the pathway you are flying down was a small building that housed the uniform sales store where one could buy your uniform components.
It was located near where you were standing at the end of the video. Looks like that building is long gone now.
The reason I remember the uniform sales store is that one sunny Friday I had to quick march directly to that building from the jet engine school house (about 2-3 blocks away) where I was attending jet engine mechanic technical school.
Somehow, I lost my head gear (BDU hat) during the day while in the school house.
Not sure how I lost it, or where it landed. I suspect someone took it, but never proved that.
But that put me into a really serious pickle as we were near the end of the day and waiting to be marched back to the dorms.
Talk about the longest, yet fastest march ever!
One does not walk around outside on a USAF training base in uniform without headgear on your head!! You will stand out like a lone dandelion flower on a fresh cut green lawn in that situation. NCO and officer trolls love to jack up ANYONE in that situation. Some would harass you all the way to the uniform sales door... maybe even follow you in.
I was seriously concerned with NOT having to give up a AF Form 341 (this is basically a demerit form) for not being in uniform outside (not having a hat on my head).
Giving one of those up would likely mean cleaning duties on the weekend. I had plans for that weekend!!
I could have sprinted there, but running makes you stand out even more! Best to just march with a purpose in the most direct path possible.
Fortunately, I did not run into any trolls on my way to the uniform sales store. I suspect it being Friday helped.
Walked into the store and bought a new hat (I got two of them as a contingency). Glad I had the cash on me too.
Strolled out and got back to the jet engine school house just in time to be marched back to the student dorm for evening chow... in appropriate uniform.
    Whew!!
Thank you for taking the time to record these scenes. Brings back many memories for those of us who were honored to be there when it was a living USAF base.

I remember that Base Theather. We saw the showing of 'Stripes' there. Very fun to watch that movie on the military base when we were adjusting to military life. That was early 1982. I was there Jan -May 1982.

i was there in '75, saw "Jaws" for about 75 cents, if memory serves. And wasn't there an ice cream shop? I remember a good-looking older woman (brunette, in her twenties, lol) who worked there, but I was too shy to say anything to her.

I was there Dec. 86 to May 87, AGE Mech. stayed in Factor hall. I remember going into the theater for briefing when we got there within the first week. I remember the phone center bldg. always packed had to wait in line to call my girlfriend. I was from the Chicago area so I would take the Amtrak train home every weekend. then in February I brought my car down. Great times, great memories! It amazes me how the Government can care so much to take care of a base when its open and the just turn around and abandon the base and let it decay. If people do this with their own property they are held accountable but not our own Government! What a bunch of BS!!!

Nothing sadder than an abandoned military base.
Where did all the young healthy folk go to?
What happened to all the planes, tanks, trucks, guns?
They all just went away but where to?

10os of millions in wasted taxpayer moneywhen bases are closed to just walk away with no plan to help the local communites reutilize them and buildingwhat can be used for apartments and whatnot just go to pot!
