As a rear wheel holder, I would go back toward your lifting extension section, place stand-offs to the side so you can still push your front wheel through, then the extension can slide over the rear wheel to capture it. Means you're stuck with bikes at the same wheelbase. Sidenote can you still register 2023/4 250x?
That this is awesome! I like the foot peg holders actually. But I would mount them to the main system, NOT the slider. That way when the bike is in place, the foot peg holders secure the bike, as well as the slider to the ENTIRE rigid system mounted to the truck. So it will not allow it to rock or sway while underway. Would be easy to incorporate as you only need to mount them on the part the base is, and they would be use a little wider than the slide. So the slide would pass though where they are mounted. When the slide in fully slide up, the bike would stop at the foot peg holders. I would also incorporate a secondary way to get the slide up, incase of winch failure. If you are out somewhere, and the winch fails, you still need a way to load the bike. You can also make it so the rear flip section of the ramp, acts as a rear tire holder when folded up. One thing I always remember was a trip to desert with my dad as a kid. We had bikes on a trailer towed behind a motorhome. With the bumps on the dirt road, a rear tire on one of the bikes bounced off of the rail, and the bike was resting on the sprocket that caught the rail, and was just hanging there. From then on we always but a strap around the rim and the rail, just like you did the very first time on the front tire. I would do that to your rear tire as well, any bumps in the road at speed may cause the rear end of the bike to jump off, unless the peg holders are used. One last thing, I also wouldn't extend the ramp to fit the truck on a level road, if you are going to go anywhere with it, it won't just be a flat parking lot. you should just leave the small section as a ramp if needed but just allow the slide to go to that point, that way you can load and unload in any terrain. May have to man handle the bike a little to get it up, but the slide is made for more gear storage and some ease of loading. But in the wild, nothing will be even, so don't factor in the slide being able to go on the small extension all the time.
I think the foot peg holders will get another run, or like you suggested Tie down over the back wheel. I do like your suggestion of the foot peg holders on the canopy and not the slide, cheers for the comment!
I love the iteration and design you go through with all your projects. Definitely a whole different level to most RUclips car channels which I really appreciate as I enjoy the same process (albeit at a much lower level). It’s awesome to see how far you have come from your first vids!! Keep it up!
Try mounting the tie down straps off of the lower triple clamps instead of bars. They will be closer together at top and also shorter distance of strap to base mount. It's way more stable 🤙
The best versions of these I have seen are in Canada with the snow mobiles, they run the same type mechanism as a skip bin hook truck and just lay the tray flat on the ground and pick it all up when tied down, gives you endless amount of trays you can run

Great build Richard, love these types of videos. For stability, instead of having the 'push down' peg holders, could you pull the pegs into a slot with an angled down top? Since the bike would be pulling into it it would apply downward pressure each side creating the stability.
Nice to see someone else to do this and end up with a very similar design and troubles as I did. Mine was aluminum and carried a sportster as well as dirt bikes. Great job.

For the foot pegs you can weld a a tie down point and use turn buckles and it allows you to have the back and stable as it’s all in the middle of the bike pulling it down.
Amazing ingenuity and design. Very cool! the progression and you sharing your improvements in design is great to watch. WIder tie down brackets would solve the wobble... but that probably doesn't meet you design parameters.
I like the (incomplete) idea of a flat false deck (with draws), then something like the pulley used here (prob manual boat winch for me 😅)but just an extended peice for the back wheel (maybe one that pulls out like a trundle) and a spare no.plate
Cool idea, but why not just get the hitch mounted one. It allows me the use of the whole back of my truck bed AND essentially gives me a lift if I need to do some trailside work.
A bike cannot legally protrude more than 150 millimetres from the outermost side of either side of the vehicle in Vic. Other states are likely the same.
@@nordic5490 is that truck very narrow? Mine goes behind my Toyota Tundra without any protrousion. I do turn the handlebars, so that shortens it some. I have a 2023 KTM 500, so I don't imagine it's smaller than the one he has.
There is over centre front wheel carriers that lock in depending on tyre size , so when it’s set correctly there is no need for straps ! With the rear wheel why not design a clamp that goes over the rear wheel that secures to the slide and that can be easily removed with the right tools. This will also help further eliminate the need for straps and will also provide you a way to add security to the build !
Absolutely amazing project. I'm impressed by your persistence and creativity. You've aproached this very professionally! For added stability of the bike, I can recommend a system like the Moto Cinch, that hook onto the footpegs. I've been using a similar system for both my dirt bikes, and that is the ONLY way I attach them to my trailer. No more straps! Works incredibly well, and is very reliable.
Im all about giving input without being negative but what about a half canopy and put the bikes sideways, or a rear hitch high mount carrier, the center of gravity seems a bit high, and it’s best to compress the suspension or fit a suspension lock because as you go over corrugations the bikes suspension will articulate and the straps may come loose,
Could you use carabiner and turn buckle tie down points at the foot pegs and recess the rear wheel also like the Ballard’s bike rack might resolve a lot of the dramas and no need for tie downs at the front either
Love the builds and I so wish I had the time to do what you do. Also, I'm not sure if you are aware, but when you tie a bike down with those straps. The strap should go around your fork on top of the bottom triple clamp. It makes the bike so much more ridged and stable.
Good effort man, I built a something similar when i wanted an electric ladder to my attic same concept but just longer and made from timber, worked well even automatically closed the lid when the ladder was fully up.

Hey mate I’d love to get into doing things like this myself but don’t know where to start just wondering what cad you use and how you learnt to use it.
I am completely self taught on the CAD front, heaps of trial and error and watching youtube. I would recommend fusion 360 to start with as its good bang for buck! They are all similar and once you have learnt one you can transfer your skills quite easily.
My mate has a trailer that has loop bars that u push over da top da front tire so didn't need tie dwn straps, works great, I can send photos if u like, great vids
Hi mate, great build btw For the rear wheel tie down system, have a look at the pitbull transport tie down design. Works very well for road bikes allowing the suspension on the bike to move/work
nice idea... just don't forget if the bike is loaded up if you go into an underground carpark... Try an alternative approach - lock the bike in to the ramp via the bash plate or frame rails - add in some attachment points (twist 90 degrees to lock in?) / hook holes to the bottom of the bike, add a post with top plate to mirror the bash plate to the slider and just hook the bike on to that... if you can get the attachment pole to also be capable of being tightened down (maybe an old ratchet strap handle welded on), you will get the bike locked on under tension... I know the challenge is in the project and solving the problems, but for that amount of work, you could have just built a trailer instead...
Rich I always appreciate how ya think outside of the box most of ya projects I don't see your vision until it all starts coming together and then it just works and works really sweet 👌 but this time I reckon you could've designed and built a slick offroad bike trailer that way you could still run ya canopy and won't have to worry about low hanging trees or power lines 😂

Good job, the winch set up I was thinking would be better using chain and sprocket to pull it up for one thing you could gear it for two it’ll never slip which equals faster and sturdier, big version of a motorbike chain and sprockets . Well thought of project on your behalf.
Add flatdown loading behind headboard mate,lower vertically ,bikes too high in air,or just have loading winch pole,that can be moved to either side,simple
Nicely done mate. Have a cam at the top or a large bearing that has a tapered lead feeling it as it reaches the top of the travel. It will hold itself tight then. Make the 2 ramps one u shape that travel together, that can still go around the spare, but limit rocking as the width is greater. The tie downs could cross over then. Also Ballard's has a locking wheel holder. Very well done. I'd love to support your channel with laser cutting and folding, but I'm in QLD. Cheers Justin eva4x4 & metal mfg.

If the final design is not ready yet...just a small suggestion from an engineer...if possible you can use your winch/ rope mechanism to deploy and retract the bottom part of the track, which you made manually removable. Looking forward to the final part of this build.

look at bike binderz for a possible footpeg tie down solution. i like the build but for me there is a glaring problem your bike can be taken out by a low hanging tree branch which will drastically limit how far off the main roads you can go.
Yeah nice job l have a similar problem sheds to small infact the planet is a bit limited so many idea's so little time Maybe two models one with custom tray for maximum fit and one to retro fit old mate's tray

Great progress you could look at a wider tie down once bike is up, stretching to the opposite side of canopy rather than just side of slide.

Scrap the tie down all together and make a turn buckle set up like ballards motow rack, turn buckle straight to the foot pegs and back down

Do you think its higher than a loaded canopy with rooftop tent + Roof rack etc though? 100% agree on the suspension lock, will use one for sure!

Great work. For your tie downs look up moto cinch. I tie my bike down with chains that are the right length to pull the pegs down and works well

I use 2 turn buckles with a carabina on each end. Lock them off to the foot pegs and use no tiedowns.

I'd of kept the actuated ramp but made it so it somehow hugged around the back tyre (like a claw?) for stability.

Add (discrete) tie down points on the tray backboard horizontal top bar. Strap from bike bars. They'll secure and brace everything.
Reckon you could do it without climbing on the canopy though?

I quite like it the way it is mate, CoG won't be much higher than a fully laiden canopy with Roof top tent so I'm not too stressed!

Awesome video mate! What sort of tolerance do you use on your keyways with the laser cut pieces?
I go size for size! Do a test bit first though, may need to be adjusted given the laser!

You’re still using straps. A tow receiver motorcycle carrier from harbor freight does a fantastic job.

look at bike binderz for a possible footpeg tie down solution.
i like the build but for me there is a glaring problem your bike can be taken out by a low hanging tree branch which will drastically limit how far off the main roads you can go.
