Record-breaker: Plugger Lockett kicks his 1300th goal | 1999 | On This Day | AFL

It was 20 years ago today legendary forward Tony 'Plugger' Lockett became the greatest goalkicker in history by surpassing Gordon Coventry's long-standing record of 1299 goals.
Lockett entered the round 10, 1999 game against Collingwood at the SCG needing three goals to achieve the feat. The adoring fans were at fever pitch as their superstar booted nine goals on a memorable day of football.

That record will never be broken so long as the AFL prioritises Athleticism over skill.
In Lockets era there were numerous prolific goal scorers: Dunstall, Ablett, Lloyd where 100+ a season wouldn't win you the Coleman. Today you score 70 you're a good chance of wining it by a fair margin.

Blokes like Plugger & Dunstall didn't need to move outside of forward 50. Their brute strength alone made life hard for the full back in a one on one & they were surprisingly quick on a lead.
Hopefully Buddy gets to 1,000 goals next season, but it'll be the last time we ever see that happen

If I remember right, one year, Plugger kicked 132 and didn't win the Coleman. Dunstall claimed it at around 139 during the regular season.

It's as if this moment was meant to be. When he was on 1299, missed a shot off the deck in the goal square, then dropped a sitter which would have been straight in front from about 35. Was as if fate played a part that the delivery was from his great mate Paul Kelly

Buddy is a god. But, he is 31 years old. He might get like 2 extra years of footy but I don't know if he could catch up. I mean he will get 1,000 definitely. But I doubt he could get 1360.
