I would almost argue that Ryan called George in BECAUSE of the big shift in tone the show is about to take. Like you said - this is about to become a war show, lots of big battles, especially on dragonback. It would be very easy to drop the ball here. If I was the showrunner and had an open communication with George the way Ryan does, I'd call him in too. I'd want to get it right.

George wanting to write scripts is a good thing. He doesn't want to work on shit, if he's writing it's because he likes it, not to right some perceived wrongs.

the rumours on twitter are insane. they’re saying the actors threatened to quit bc of the scripts ‘weren’t faithful’ to the characters and had to reach out to george and ask him to do something about it 😭

Thanks for spreading some positivity around, the fandom can be quite toxic in social media and sometimes all the negativity can be a bit overwhelming. All this "they're gonna ruin the show" "they're ruining the characters", and whenever there's news about George getting involved: "we are never getting the books", "george is gonna die soon anyway" and it just makes me sad. As an adhd-autistic person I tend to suck in other people's moods and feelings like a sponge so it's nice to suck in some positive vibes from this community for a change haha
I still have to give major credit to the show for doing Vizzy T considerably better than his book counterpart, and also Laenor Velaryon :)

I believe in one of George's interviews he said he wrote Fire & Blood in 6 months and it just flowed out. His editor was surprised and he said it was because he was inspired and had a vision.

Great idea, putting this segment has its own post, I think most people don’t understand the nature of writers, and artist in general, and the need for inspiration, as well as the movement from long project to short projects and back. I love you guys talking together too!
I wish we were getting the usual 10 episodes, but I get theyre shortening it because of HBO is doing budget cuts. But season 3 should be 10 episodes because we need to have Rhaenyra as the half year queen, Aemond vs Daemon, Daerons death and Battle of the Gullet if it's not in season 2.
Yes! Working on other projects helps with creativity and I think keeping in the ASOIAF world probably makes it easier to get back to Winds.

@@samf.s.7731 I know when a direction is criticized and when Twitter just goes ham on the writers because Daemon choked Rhaenyra. Failing to understand that Daemon is that guy who will act impulsively is not in any way criticizing the direction.
I have not seen a single lazily written scene in House of the Dragon. They have been well articulated and well defined according to the characters we had. Should it have been more than 10 episodes? Oh yes. It should have. But it's HBO's fault, not Ryan's.
And I never talked about girls here. I said Daemyra shippers are just hating on writers Sara and Ryan just because they don't give them the holy saint relationship and add layers to their relationship. And yes, there has been no one dimensional interpretation at all. So I don't know what you are tryin to defend here lmao
Ryan Condal is the best man for the job, hand picked by GRRM and he adapted content for S1 brilliantly. The only hating him are Daemyra shippers and it's not just 'girls'. Quiet sexist of you to mention girls when I talked about shippers.

Condal confirmed 5 new drags in S2. HBO HotD Dragon Index indicates 5 dragons without images. Dreamfyre, Sunfyre, Tyraxes, Silverwing, & Moondancer. No Cannibal, Grey Ghost, Sheepstealer/Nettles, Tessarion/Daeron, etc.? A Sowing without Sheepstealer/Nettles & the wild drags is very anti-climatic.

To be fair the Cannibal is mainly referred to, not seen. Dropping Nettles would be a disappointment to book readers but TV viewers will be oblivious.
Four seasons sounds great and then a Aegon conquest film then onto the TV series is A masterstroke by HBO Warner Bros fingers crossed it happened 3 to 4 years

I think george being involved is definitely a good sign that they want his input. When d&d stopped listening to him he didn't wrestle with them for control of the show, he just took a step back. I think if he's involved its bc he believes in it.

I've been wondering if going back and looking back at an earlier time in the asoiaf universe has maybe given some inspiration and motivation to his writing. Sort of the having to go back to go forwards. Also being able to work with people who genuinely love his work maybe helped to get him back into writing.

When I first saw the headline like most people I assumed they're rushing to wrap things up. I thought HBO keeps thinking their audience only has patience for car crash & explosions & they don't realize that a proper buildup is what makes the climax hit. BUT then I saw they've pushed Battle of Gullet back to S3. Which means my fear that they were gonna ram everything into 8 episodes was totally misplaced. If Gullet is happening in S3, then surely there's gonna be a S4 as so much stuff is left. There's a ton of dumb misinfo on social media from stans of the two teams. But ignoring all the obv BS, what I gathered is that Miguel wanted 3 seasons while Ryan & GRRM wanted 4. With Miguel gone, they're restructuring. Making S2 shorter means the Dance is probably expanding in the long run. Which is a great thing.

Twitter 🙄 Love your guys take on this. They need to do 2 big Battles before that huge spoiler one. Putting those 2 together would be too much. Just my opinion. I didn’t see how it was possible to do all three. It makes sense. My guess is George is mostly involved in the adjusted framework.

I had no doubts the moment they announced a third series. If Condel etc can walk up to HBO with such a package it means HBO are impressed and have few fears (which is impressive in this current climate). If there’s less episodes next season there’s good reason for it. I’m so excited. There’s a definite plan.

I would disagree a bit that working on a long project means you need to drop it for other projects. It debatable that, I find just sitting down and focusing on long projects gets them done. Then do other projects when editing the completed project.

I do think some of the really important things are going to land better in season 3. I also heard that Aegon II and Helena are only going to have 2 kids. I think this is wise because the third child would have been just too much and unnecessary. I do know that people have a bad taste in their mouths about the abbreviated seasons 7/8 from the original series. George has got to do George. Just because people want to force him to write only TWOW doesn't mean that he's going to be able to schlep out TWOW. Changing his focus may really help him stretch and create.
My take is that George was brought in not so much to rewrite scripts as to navigate the break off point between seasons 2 and 3, when they decided to shorten the next season into the 8 episodes. While I of course would like to see more episodes, I'm fine with the decision since they're mapping out the story long term. In retrospect I would've loved to have them cut off Season 1 at the death of Viserys, moving the last two to Season 2, and explored a bit more with Harwin/Rhaenyra, and the evolution of her relationship with Alicent in Season 1. But I can't fault them because they didn't know they were going to have a Season 2, so they needed to go out with Vhagar over Storm's End and the two factions at the brink of war.
I think when I found out that Shipbreaker's Bay was gonna be in season one I kinda... was puzzled.
I mean don't get me wrong I ate that up, it's just that I thought it was "too bombastic" an event for season one.
But like you said they had to have something for those who didn't read the book and don't know what's gonna happen.
For anyone who hasn't read F&B Vol I, and The World of Ice and Fire, I highly recommend dropping everything and doing that. The Targaryen Dynasty is fascinating and, for lack of a better term, bananas.
I want Vol II more than winds, and I actually want "The Golden Order Vol I" looooool.
Don't come at me ASOIAF fans, it's just that Elden Ring was equally bananas.
@@samf.s.7731 I really enjoyed Fire and Blood too. I particularly liked the description of the reign of Jaehaerys and Alysane. While fascinating to read, that period would not work as well for a TV series though.

Question: Do you think Targ Dragon Dreams are a residual consciousness from their ancestors?
If we lean in to dragonriders needing to sacrifice their blood relatives to birth dragons, would those relatives' psyche pass through the dragons, and over time less of the person remains (either in a Dragons = ultimate Fire Wights kind of way or the humanity is lost to beasthood kind of way) but their purpose for creation is passed on through their bonded riders, leading me to think Balerion the Black Dread essentially gave up on willing to live after being bonded to Viserys. In the show, Viserys did believe Dragons should have never been trifled with in the past or in the future, and feeling those feelings through the psychic bond combined with the extended amount of peace, Balerion no longer felt needed and died. Furthermore, a lot of people who have experienced generational trauma or childhood trauma will often dream of something happening in the near future. Considering the brain is a pattern recognition machine, it can use dreams (our subconscious) to communicate potential dangers it recognizes in the patterns experienced in consciousness. So, add in the magical fantasy elements with those recognizable patterns from generational trauma (remember the Valarians decend from Asshai) and boom, the Targs get Dragon Dreams.
I'm putting all my hopes and dreams for HotD into Ryan Condal being a major GRRM's fanboy wanting to make Uncle George proud.

I think it takes a lot of guts as a producer, director, show runner, to admit they need help from the source and actively seek out ways to make the show more successful. Ryan and George's working relationship pleases me, it seems like Ryan really gets George and respects his work greatly. Something Dave and Dan never achieved.

Damn, a dig at BrandoSando. I think it's okay to just get that they're two wildly different authors. Brando writes much less serious YA stuff (generally) while asoiaf goes 57 layers deep and Dips heavily into some DARK stuff.
It's like yeah the surf and turf special we've been waiting on for 12+ years is going to taste better than anything else but.... that doesn't mean that this peanut butter banana honey sandwich that comes out twice a year isn't still very delicious - especially with some chocolate milk
no that’s fair, my point was purely about the time that it takes to create a true masterpiece. You can definitely churn out stories if you’re a decent author, but writing the shallower type of stuff just is an entirely different level of work and creative energy. nothing wrong with a sandwich but no one waits 45 min for a sandwich. you wait 45 min at the famous restaurant and you’re not really upset
@David Lightbringer most definitely. It's impressive how fast he churns out his books for sure. His strength is certainly not in prose or depth. The worldbuilding and very active magic systems are definitely the biggest draw - which is so different from how George uses and frames magic.
I definitley prefer the subtle more sacrificial approach on Planet's. But hey, sometimes, it really is fun to just read about a girl eating metal beads in order to fly through the air and kill the semi-undead

Finally some news. Man the off season is boring. Haha
This HBO decision is due to the way straming is shapping to work from now on. HBO wants the HOTD fans to pay subscription longer, so, more season equals more subscription. If you do a 10 eps season, its 3 month subscription, if you do a 8 eps season, it's the same amount of months. So, instead of 3 seasons of 10 eps, how about 4 seasons with 8 to 6 eps in the last 3? It's all about money, always. I just hope the production team can adequate the story for this format.
There has been no clue that the last three will have six episodes. They are planning to do more seasons as the story is not that long. Dividing the season so we can have to major battle events in two different seasons is not about money, it's literally driven by story. Of course it's about money tho, who does not want money, but that has nothing to do with the seasons being divided.
