How Good Is Austin Reaves, Actually?

- Some NBA fans think Austin Reaves is a future All-Star, and some think he only gets as much attention as he does because he plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Anybody playing next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis is going to be under a microscope, but how much of the spotlight does Austin Reaves deserve? With how Austin Reaves has been performing for Team USA FIBA exhibition games so far, he's gotten some increased attention lately.
But how good is Austin Reaves, actually?
We got to see him step up big time late in the season for the Lakers when they were without LeBron James, who was out recovering from a foot injury. Not only did Reaves elevate his own play, but he proved that he was capable of playing as the lead guard alongside Anthony Davis.
The Lakers resigning Austin Reaves, who was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, was a huge boost to their potential heading into the future. There was the fear he could've gotten snatched up by the San Antonio Spurs if they offered him the max, but the LA Lakers got lucky, signing him to a very team-friendly contract. If Reaves can even become 50% of what his ceiling might be, then they're going to be in good shape.

How many points and assists does Austin Reaves average next season?👇
My prediction would be around 17-18 ppg, 6-7 apg, 4-5 rpg, around 2 steals (maybe a little less) on 40/50/90 shooting splits.
17ppg on 4apg
i think around 37 ppg, 12 ast, 10 reb 4 stl. according to my analysis, lakers are winning the chip and lebron gonna retire to give austin the keys to franchise.
17/5/5

5-6 ast

As a Laker fan it's been a joy to see him. In the dark era 2022-mid 2023 the Lakers were looking for anyone and everyone who could give them quality minutes. But Reaves was one of those guys who took that opportunity and gave it 100%. He's such a winning player. He can do a bit of everything on offense, but more so than that he makes quick confident decisions and executes under pressure. I would never accuse him of being checked out, or not taking shots he's supposed to. One of my favorite moments was when he crossed over Giannis. Yeah, it's a guard dealing with a big on the perimeter, but for someone of his standing to not be too afraid to attack arguably the best player in the league? that's uncommon, He earned the respect of LeBron, and eventually a starting spot even as the Lakers ascended to a conference finalist again. I'm rooting for him
The dark era was 2014-2018😂
Eh, 1992-1996 was pretty bleak too. @@jayking2919
The fact that he just keeps steadily improving under pressure is a very important metric. The fact that Steve Kerr has been letting him finish games says something too.

I agree, coaches trust him because he plays the right way and makes good decisions between the lines. I will attribute this to him spending 4 years in college, I am not questioning his talent. Most young players struggle to realise that playing at a correct pace and not trying to do more than they can is the right way.
I hope he grows further as a player because he is a joy to watch.
he can be literally like Manu Ginobli type of player. AR-15 is a type of player you want on a championship team.
The Spurs actually had ginoboli and didn’t even offer Reaves a contract 😂..so i don’t think they agree

Disgraceful to put Reeves in same sentence as Ginobili. No comparison whatsoever.
Thing i love about him is his humility, nowadays its cool to disrespect your elders but he listens to bron and shows respect and also has his own natural abilities and hard work and devotion. He will be in this league for a LONG time and will win multiple chips hes a WINNING player gives me Ginobli/Robert horry/haslem vibes but more usefulness in different systems.
He is a perfect player for the Lakers right now. Take the burden off of Lebron, without wanting to take the credit, ala a Kyrie.

@@deadpoolcorps2 smart man 👍🏾🤫
I foresee Bron helping him shine even more next season. He knows that he needs to save his energy for the playoffs so why not let Reaves have a bigger share of the offense. Now what the Lakers really need is for D-Lo to actually contribute when it matters most or trade him.

Austin Reaves been a crucial part of the Los Angeles Lakers' success.
Reaves is a legitimately good player, as he showed in his first playoff game, and other coaches and teams have begun treating him as such. Most importantly Reaves gives you value because he does everything quite well and doesn't take much off the table as a perimeter player.
Dude is a real life mycareer player.
He even plays like it with his speed, athleticism and playstyle.
He's just cheesing his way to the line and drawing charges. Like a true 2k pro 😅
Hes only getting better. 2nd year and hes playing a major role with Lebron and AD is insane. Several times he carried during the playoffs. So happy for him and amazing storyline.
1. I think he’s a solid starter, but All-star maybe one or 2 seasons.
2. This season is really going to tell cause teams are going to focus more on him film wise. So we will see how he adjusts.
yes, I have similar take on him like your 1. ... he'll probably be a late bloomer and will continue to further improve until maybe he's 31-32. Then maybe decline from there? At most he's a 2-3 time All Star reserve. At the worst, he'll probably be like this for the years to come...
i think hes borderline allstar currently
@@SISKCERTWaJaVlogslol delusional
Interesting thing about Reaves. He led all guards in true shooting percentage (on ball and off ball) even though he often takes and misses half court shots at the end of quarters. Most players time those shots perfectly so that it won’t destroy their stats. Reaves doesn’t do that he always does what is best for the team even at the cost of himself. You take away those half court shots and his three point shooting would’ve been around 43% for the year. His true shooting percentage would’ve gone up from 69% to around 72%. For an on the ball player to have a true shooting percentage that high is incredible and is a product of his elite ability to create contact/draw fouls
That's insane
elite shot selection
Even if this is reaves peak he’s still one of the best role players in the league and will be for the next 6-8 years
I like Reaves, an efficient scorer and decent enough play maker with the ability to “play up” when called upon. Seems like a pretty low maintenance guy as well, hopefully we see some sort of perennial all star quality out of him this season
When his off the dribble ability kept expanding so did my view of him. The way he performed in that Grizzlies game in the fourth should have put people on notice. It’s not the amount he scored. It’s the way he was doing it, with the ball in his hands. Homie was waving off Lebron.
Bro. I saw him play at OU when I was at Texas Tech and he was so cold. I asked if rockets should use a late first on him and got laughed at. Happy to see him shine 🫡
I think he's a very good player, solid B+. I remember watching him in the 21-22 season when LA was just sad, but every single time I saw him on the court he was giving 110% and hustling. That translated to him being even better in the 22-23 season. Really looking forward to what the 23-24 season holds for him. If he's averaging 30 minutes with 20+ points as starting PG with Bron at the 3 or 4, that is going to be terrifying for the west.
I personally think he's the future of the Lakers. AD in my opinion will be a better player without having to be the #1/#2 option on that team, and if AR takes an even just decent leap this season, he will be very good for their team. LeBron keeps getting older, so having a young guy taking more of the ball-handling off him will be great. He already gets to the line super well, and that's gonna make him a tough matchup when you have to worry about not fouling him whilst playing defense since he can score. Not to mention his flashes of good passing. I personally hope he can get better on defense also, he isn't bad and he definitely hustles, which is better than most of the young players in the league. I loved watching him this season, I was getting hyped watching him play my Nuggets in the postseason. I'm rooting for him, and I think he can take another jump.
I’m not even trying to hate but laker fans always have insane expectations lol. He’s not that good whatsoever to be “the future of the lakers”. That statement is blasphemous in my opinion with all due respect.
If he’s the future of the lakers we’re absolutely fucked. Might as well bring back Robert Sucre to the starting lineup…
@@colin24447 they honestly believe reaves gonna lead the lakers pass Luka, Shai, giannis, joker, antman, wemby in the future 😂

😂, delusional Faker fan, he's a good role player but not a star
As a warriors fan who has watched him since his rookie year, Austin Reaves is as deadly of a competitor as I’ve ever seen! When I watch him, he flashes Steph like brilliance on offense and makes great defensive efforts to where you cannot expect to get anything easy against HIM. I absolutely believe he’s got a chance to become an all-star in 2024 and if the Lakers continue to feature his abilities, he very well could become a, Superstar! Book it! ⭐️ 🤩
if defenses start focusing on austin, i get the feeling people are going to start complaining about the amount of time he spends on the line. he doesnt shy away from contact and he's a relatively big guard so yea....
Yeah. He's going to be a monster at the free-throw line. He's a physical guard who can draw contact on almost every play. We already saw a preview of that during the Laker's playoff run last year.
he's really good at rising into a shot whenever he feels defenders hand on his arm, people already starting to hate on him for it 💀
Basketball IQ over athleticism and Austin taking advantage of it 🔥🔥
Yoo that was literally perfect analysis and projection good ish my man !!
I think he’ll be a impact player, like a Manu or Draymond his stats won’t really jump out too much but the plays he make and effort on both ends at needed situations will make him great. He’s seems like a high IQ player long as he can hit his shots he will be successful
damn great video as always man. super glad to listen to u on the shootaround nowadays as well!
Micheal Jordan wishes he could be a fraction of what Austin is in NBA.
As a hometown fan of austin, I’m so excited for the world to see what he can really do with the ball in his hands more. He’s so nasty
AR will continue to improve regardless during the course of his career. In addition, AR wants to be a Laker for life.
Just watch his college highlights. He’s playing style fits well with the lakers. He’s resilient and will improve each year. He’s like a poorman Luka or maybe Ginobili
Love the buzz Austin reaves been getting .. been a fan since he was on the bench with barely any minutes 💪🏻 now he getting a lot of videos about him
Right side Manu ginobli. Can handle many roles on offense but none at an elite level. Decent defender & rebounder . Should have probably been drafted but he old they only draft for potential.
Elite iq
Better shooter
i dont think he's an All Star level like a lot of people think he is, but he's a good 3rd option. He's aggressive offensively and good hustler. I do want to point out that he seems to be pretty good at staying in balance after getting contact at the rim, making him good at getting and-ones.
Lol he can be an all star.
He’s above the average player for sure, but he’s still surrounded by 3 all stars, two of which are probably the most dominant players in the league lol.. he just better enjoy LBJ while he’s here . He wouldn’t have survived with dillion brooks crowding him.

Man was getting set plays and scoring in the playoffs while bron was chilling on the wing. What kind a question is this?
I'm a warriors fan, and as long as he keeps doing what he's doing he's definitely an all star. Perennial all star
Reaves an allstar means lakers have 3 all stars in the conference. Unless they no 1 team in nba that is unlikely
Gotta give him credit for taking charges too
A NON-FLUKE, Career Long Linsanity type of player!!
I think he’s close to the Jordan Poole, Tyler Herro, Tyrese Maxey tier of player. He could average 18-22 a night, passes the ball well, knows how to get to the line.
The right handed Manu Ginobili comparisons are spot on, right down to the flopping. Manu was more athletic but Reaves a better shooter. That said, i need to see him play this well over a full season with more defensive attention before putting him in the same tier as Manu. Like if Reaves didn't get the superstar whistle he's gotten, would be still be as effective?
We'll see, but he's showing that it's not all hype with the National Team right now. He's definitely a decent starter or 6th man if nothing else.
Reaves is one of those players who is more about using their fundamentals, skills, and instincts to be effective on both ends. He's no future All-Star by any stretch, but he's a good player who you can slot in as a starter or off the bench, so he's flexible in that way.
Good Video bro!
Herb Jones is my favourite player and I’m still amazed how good his defensive stats look sometimes
if his numbers are around 20++ppg and like 5 assist. with good fg pct. he is the real deal. cuz by now there's already a good amount of scouting reports about him if he still can produce good numbers, then we gotta hand it to him.
He's really effin good. Cant wait for next season!
His offense. And defense is NBA caliber. He's getting better every year.. he also has no off court distractions. So he's focus on his game . He's gonna be a great player for the Lakers. If he works on his ball handle he'll ball up anyone one guarding him another thing if rui works on his post game with hakeem olajuwon. Rui will be unstoppable.
You must be a Laker fan...
His lack of defense was exposed in the WCFs against Denver, and his offense isn't anything exceptionally remarkable. THT was a better player on both sides of the ball and just as heralded two years ago, and where is he now...? Reaves is just another NBA journeyman at best, and it's very unlikely he'll be on an NBA all-star squad in his career. If he starts in the backcourt with D'Angelo Russell for the Lakers this upcoming season, and with Ham still at the helm, the Lakers are in big trouble.
Good not great player
@@garyaugustus690 He was rated one of the best team-defensive players in the NBA! And his plus/minus numbers last year were very good. Check the NBA's advanced stats if you don't believe me. But yeah, his man D could be better, but he hustles constantly, which makes up for a lot. What really sets him apart is his efficiency and sound decision-making. He might not look like a star, but when you look at the statistics and percentages, you're looking at one of the most efficient overall players in the NBA last year. If he keeps doing that, he will be a top 50 guy in the league in terms of value that leads to wins. But his national team performances show that he can hang with all the other young "stars," so there is a chance he might actually have an all-star appearance or two in his future. At the very least, he's a legit NBA starter right now.
MVP! AR livin the dream!
him being a top 40 player one day is not out of the realm of possibility

He's a force of nature.
So what Im hearing is that he’s going to be in goat conversations soon 🥱🥱🥱
His ability to adjust in real time is impressive af
He is him!
I don't even know how people are rating him. LOL. There's very little to go off. He makes good decisions on offense and gets a lot of assists and hits a high percentage of open 3s. He plays hard on D, but isn't quick enough for a lot of the elite guards in the league. But he's long and can make up for it. On offense he isn't going to blow by anyone either, but he uses picks really well, uses his body to shield... He's solid. He's not going to be a star, but he should be able to have a good career. He is smart about his footwork in the paint, pump fakes, and is going to get some FTs. Great find, but some people are going nuts on what he is.
He’s not over read it he’s showing his value and he’s becoming and going into an all star. We’re playing time and confidence as I just stated he’s the third coming to Jerry West for the Los Angeles Lakers. I won’t say second cause I have a Lotta respect for Mr. Wes, but Austin vees he can bowl he’s showing that And one thing about playing in the NBA if you have confidence and you work on your craft, do you know season and he’s working on that shit now while playing in the FIFA tournament he’s only going to get better he can average 20 points next season because he should be starting next year because he plays ball size difference in outfits of a basketball player if you can get that he’s gonna be coming all star sooner than later
I think with him playing in the upcoming for the fees a tournament is only gonna get better so he’s lifting a little bit of weights, but the Lakers found them. I’m not saying is Jerry West, but the third coming to Jerry West.
This is the thought the Lakers was of how good THT could become..
His high energy plays reminds me of a young 25 years old Manu Ginobili.
He's HIM plain and simple HIM straight up HIM
Props to Phil Handy the 🐐
4 year 56m is an absurd underpay for him.
Reaves will be a superstar I just want him to stay healthy and have a long NBA career
Idk if it’s too early but he has now surpassed the goat, the bald mamba Alex Caruso
We are going to find out this upcoming season.
What Caruso is to defense, Reaves is to offense. Phenomenal players
Reaves is double the player Caruso ever was
Two completely different play styles 😅
Reeves is a"get us a bucket" guy.
Caruso is a "stop them from getting a bucket" guy.
i think the national media and even though im a lakers fan myself lol a lot of laker fans do overrate him but i think austin reaves is perfect as that complementary guard with other star players or at most as the 3rd option on a contender
Yeah, every Championship team needs a secondary ball handler. If Lebron is the primary, then Austin is the secondary. And AD is the Big. Then you need 3 and D around them.
Clutch time reaves is scarier than Bron,
Best case sceneraio is definitely not all star lol, its superstar. He's improving very quickly, and hes got all the tools he needs
If he keeps this UP. He might be the second young player to really become something to the Lakers since Kobe. No young player has reached what Kobe has done for the franchise.
Lakers will definitely be scary once they pick up a few key pieces, Austin, Lebron, AD is already a crazy combo
He's a good starter, anything else isn't guaranteed
If you look at shooting % he's very close to rare Air. He shoots over 50% from the field which, only elite player or bigs can do, while almost shooting 40% (39.8) from three.
Austin Reeves (other then bigs) has the best true shooting percentage in the NBA... The next none big behind him is KD! Lakers have him for cheap the next two years and they are STEALING a great player. Sure, he's only scoring 13 ppgs but without russ dominating the ball he averaged 16 while shooting 56 % from the floor and 46% from three while sometimes being the 4th or 5th option.
Obviously he's getting good looks because teams dedicate man power to stopping LBJ and AD but, with the limited touches he's getting, he's cashing in.
I bet he’s at the very least a 6th Man of the year type of player. He can be their Tyler Herro
People think he’s over rated becuase he prides game on efficiency not volume shooting, also he’s not flashy so all the Casuals yell “over rated”
He can go left at ease as going right. This takes away a defender's tool of using opponent's left/right tendency.
This is really common though; at the NBA level, guards are expected to be dangerous going both left and right.

There is about to be a disgusting, disgraceful, shameful, hateful narrative about him. It’s already started but next year it will be on a completely different level when he is competing for an Allstar spot. That narrative will be “he leads the league in free throws because he is a white American” . This could force the league and Refs to not call fouls that they otherwise would. When you watch Reaves play you notice he is a master at drawing fouls. He constantly changes his speed and angles to get the foul calls. Which isn’t the same as flopping. Flopping is about faking/exaggerating the contact. That isn’t what Reaves is doing, he is creating the contact, not faking it. And he led the league in and 1s per shot attempt for that reason. A flopper rarely gets and 1s because they are exaggerating the contact rather than trying to finish off the shot. The racist bs Jokic went through is nothing compared to what Reaves is about to face. I hope he doesn’t let it mentally destroy him

I am going to play close attention to AR’s off the court decisions on whom he decides to date. If Austin stays humble, marries his college sweetheart and decides to just hoop and be a great Father - very high ceiling. If the new $$ changes Austin and he turns into a freak on the road- where women are more important than rest and recovery- a much lower ceiling. And before you say hey Magic could do both at an incredibly high level. Austin has dramatically improved because he’s been grinding for years with minimal consequential distractions.
