Changing Gear Ratios for Drag Racing - What to use?

  • When changing gear ratios in the rear end and/or your transmission there is a way to see how the engine torque will be applied to the tire with the new setup versus your existing setup, all else being the same. From this, if you know your car, you can make a better decision if the car will hold traction or not with the new setup. This is probably less of an issue for cars with a fully adjustable 4-link or other tunable suspension that can be adjusted to handle the extra load from a shorter 1st gear or ring and pinion. My IRS 2004 GTO can't.
In this example... I had a hard enough time leaving so the initial gearing had to be similar to the existing while at the same time looking to pick up acceleration in 4th gear.

I absolutely hated my wide ratio magnum with the 3.90 gears. I just put a new close ratio in it but never got to drive it. I think it would have been way better.

@@TheGoat455 stock motor with 6k rev limiter. There’s a short on my channel that’s a close up of my tach. 2nd gear was the worst, literally 500 rpm’s.
