From the my own views since I am a stepper, their facial expressions are good, judges want to see you do a mug, it adds. But that's just what I've experienced.
I believe they all have pretty faces it's just the faces they make that makes them seem ugly lol but i understand the name of the step team has everything to do with it.
I've searched the internet and can't find the answer to this...what's the origin of the faces they make before they step? why do they do it? what does it symbolize? thanks for helping

I think the concept was that they were stepping monsters (machines) and that you were supposed to be afraid of how good they stepped. Now watch again with this thought in your head and now comment.

Grit faces are what they are called it helps intensify the performance making it more crisp and polished not smiling and caring in that makes stepping look weak.
