@@darrellhiatt6500 They all love it (I work in Europan motorsport on a World Championship level, specializing in the World Rally Championship, not to be confused with the World Rally Raid Championship, which has rallies - or raids - including the Dakar.)
The Dakar used to be in Africa, and was a lot more difficult terrain, so the two wheel drive buggies where only partly successful. There was an American Trophy Truck/Class One, entered for some years, but it never managed a good result. Robby Gordon has also done the Dakar but never gotten a really good result.
When the race was moved (first to South America, then to an Arab nation) the course changed, and for a period two wheel drive cars where faster because they where allowed longer suspension travel and bigger wheels. (Look up Peugeot Dakar).
Then there where new rules since the four wheel drive guys though the buggies got to much of an advantage, so the two wheel drive cars got less suspension travel and other changes.
The Dakar used to be totally crazy, with for example big twin engined trucks that did over 170 mph (trucks still race and the Russian KAMAZ teams are one of the most successful), and full on prototypes both in bikes and cars.
A four wheel drive trophy truck is of course an awesome machine, and all rally drivers I have talked to that has tried trophy trucks says they are really really cool (also the two wheel drive ones which are more usual.)
In Europe Motorsport is very factory and engineer driven, so costs are extreme. Both in developing, building and running.
I really like the US take where you have a sport that is doable at top level for private teams.
A trophy truck is in that regard much more performance for the buck.
Thy rally cars or rally raid cars roll over by pebbles is as you know not true.
Cars in the World Rally Championship (not raids) has dampers (McPherson struts) costing as much as 150.000$ a corner (when Volkswagen ran SACHS).

It depends on the year. They mostly alternate between loops and point-to-point runs every year. And sometimes they'll do a full peninsula run to La Paz or Cabo like on the 50th anniversary couple years ago.

H P because he’s racing in the Dakar in a few weeks to back up his second win on the bike. There’s no way Ktm would let him ride the bike in the Baja period, let alone so close to the Dakar so that they can continue there record breaking dominance. Plus, with Toby’s career he’s looking for as much experience as possible to no doubt make the transition off the bike at some stage👍
