Thanks!!!! You were very patient and taught me how to do this. You also did a wonderful explanation about how to calculate the ease in the raglan. GRACIAS.
thank you so much for making it soo easy to understand! im knitting my first sweater and was slightly confused by the instructions. thank you for explaining how to separate the sleeves! i was thinking instead of placing the stitches on waste yarn, how about putting them on either an extra circular needle or an extra cable?
+ilina redd Putting the stitches on an extra circular needle or cable (that you attach needle tips to) will make it so that you are ready to go with the sleeves without having to pick up stitches. This is a great idea! Especially since cables on circular needles are so much more flexible than they used to be.
Hi i'm making my first sweater. But my pattern doesnt say to cast on any stitchesfor the space in the underarm... but every video tutorial says to cast on...why wouldnt my pattern call for it should i do iy anyway? Oh itd a toddler sized sweater
Yes, you definitely should cast on some extra stitches at the under-arm. This will prevent the armhole being too tight and will allow extra space for movement of the arm. For a toddler sized sweater you only need to add about a half inch worth of stitches, usually 2 or 3 stitches is enough.
Hello, I am working a raglan sweater, very new at knitting:), help.:) my pattern , says (set aside stitches for sleeves and join at the round. k4 sts onto dpn needles place 38 from between markers onto stitch holder . So i join first then knit 4 stitch on double pointed kneedles then do youre method on a sewing kneedle
Hi Carole, I am wondering if the 38 stitches are the sleeve stitches and the 4 stitches that go on the dpn are the under arm stitches. Most top down raglan patterns have you cast on the stitches at the under arm after you've places the stitches for the sleeves on holders - at this point the stitches for the body are on the circular needle with big gaps at each point where the sleeve stitches were put on holders, these gaps are the under arms. Then when you work the first row (or round if it is a pullover) of the sweater you will cast on the under arm stitches when you get the gap where the sleeve stitches were put on hold - these cast on stitches will bridge the gap under the arm so the sweater won't pull at the underarm when it is finished. I've never seen a pattern instruct the knitter to put the under arm stitches onto a dpn, though, there might a reason for that specific to the pattern you're working on. If the 4 stitches that you are instructed to put on the dpn are any where other than at the under arm, then I need to look at the pattern to understand what the directions are trying to convey. Do you have a link to the pattern?
That is the distance from the front of the body to the back of the body across the under arm. If you don't add any stitches here your under arm will be tight.
+jiang julie Do you mean a pullover instead of a cardigan? I haven't done any videos on making a top down pull over ... it's on my list of things to do. I do have a some tutorials in my fb student group at facebook.com/groups/knittingclasses/

what's the space you referring to at the arm hole when you reference '1-2 inches'
That is the distance from the front of the body to the back of the body across the under arm. If you don't add any stitches here your under arm will be tight.
