Hi, after seven years this video is still inspiring people!--Me I'm knitting my first-ever cardigan using this tutorial and just put the sleeves on hold. I watched four times before working the row to separate the sleeves! Thank you so much for moving me forward in my knitting journey! I learned to knit to make cardigans, and it feels great to finally be knitting one. I'll be looking for another tutorial for my next cardi. I appreciate your well-thought-out instruction videos and have viewed many of your others to learn techniques. I think you are the best!
PS. Staci, I have to say your hands are so elegant and your manicure always impeccable! Thank you for being the classy lady you are. I really enjoy watching the graceful and rhythmic dance of your hands as you knit. 🎶🧶
Your version of the sweater is SOoooo much prettier than the pattern photo! I’m going to try this! I’ve been so hesitant to attempt a sweater, but you make this look doable and it’s lovely!
Thank you so much.
Staci, I just wanted to let you know that I've now got the body of the cardi done and am working on the sleeves. I taught myself to knit exactly one year ago so this is my first sweater. I'm so excited about this sweater, I had to tell you how helpful your videos are and have been during this process. Thanks so much.
I bet you can bang this cardi out in no time now (7yr later)
I’m in your position now. Except I haven’t started it yet. Too nervous 😟
@@Felicity2121 I have been knitting for many years and have never tried to make a cardigan. The reason I learned to knit is to make cardigans. Finally, I found the pattern and then this video, and I felt confident to move forward to begin the project. I'm proud to say I'm at the point (22 min) of separating the sleeves and work the body. This is a perfect first cardigan project. If you are a basic knitter this video will walk you through every step. The feeling of making it this far is an awesome sense of accomplishment. Don't wait years to try it...go for it now!
@@mcvicky524 many thanks for your encouraging comment. I have just ordered my yarn (and extra just in case)
I’m going to have a bash on it. You are right you have to start somewhere and this looks relatively easy.
I just finished knitting this sweater. And I have been knitting for a lot of years but oh how I so appreciate your instructions on how to pick up stitches for the band and how to sew up the under arm seams. Who says you can’t teach an old dog. Thank you so much.
Staci - I've knit a lot of projects, but never a fitted one, because I was a bit (OK - a LOT) intimidated. You absolutely took the mystery out of this, and I'm very excited to knit my first cardigan. Thank you so much for your tutorials! I've also just started watching your KC tutorials, and they're wonderful, too.
Knitting is supposed to be fun in my life. I appreciate your relaxed manner for a basic sweater.
Finally, now I understand! As a visual learner this has taken the mystery out of top down sweaters! Thank you!
I have just finished knitting this cardigan with the help of this tutorial. I have been knitting for a long time but this is the first thing I have made that fits and looks good. Thank you so very much. Xxxxx
Omg! That make so much more sense! Finally a clear tutorial on cardigans/sweaters. You are a tutorial goddess! Thank you very much for this amazing lesson! ❤️😍🌹🌹
Hi Stacy , This is my first sweater and I just have to pick up and knit the button bands and I will be finished ! Thank you for all of your great help . I will keep watching any and all of your videos!!!
You are an excellent teacher! I’ve become a more confident knitter and branched out to try more complicated projects because of all I’ve learned from you. Thank you. This is definitely your gift to our world! 🙏🏻🧶🥰
Robin Gilmore - there is no need to decrease, you can knit the body with any number of stitches.
Thanks! :)

I finished the cardigan! It looks AWESOME!!!! Thank you so much for doing this project.

I am finished with my cardigan. Ready to wash and block and will send you a picture. Your tutorials are amazing! Thank you for simplifying it for us.
I know this is year's ago now but, I'm just knitting and found this cardigan. Can you tell me what size you knit and if it worked out ? I'm normally a medium but, looking at finished measurements hmmm, I'm just not sure if I should go to a large ?
I've been searching for about a month now for a detailed tutorial on a cardigan. I knew I should've sought you out first. I wasted my time with the other tutorial. This was perfect! Thank you so much. I have so much yarn that I need to use...yes, just to purchase more, but that's how it is :D
I love your videos. I noticed that this pattern has a drawing of the sweater pieces. I always see those in patterns but I'm not sure I know what I'm looking at! Maybe one day you could walk us through one of those patterns and explain what we are seeing. Thank you so much for all your help and your very well made videos!
I'm in love with you. This is going to be my first sweater, and my first pattern! I normally like to figure out my own patterns from learnt techniques, so that I get exactly what I want and don't have to decipher strange pattern hieroglyphics. But your videos are so clear and this sweater is lovely! I think I'll be able to follow along just fine
How did you do?
Thank you so much. As I began knitting again (in my retirement) I started with your dishcloths and went on to fingerless gloves, scarves, boot cuffs and hats. I can't knit fast enough for all the grandkids. I am now ready for a sweater! This is the one.
So helpful! I just bought a bunch (10 skeins) of Wool-ease hoping to knit a sweater. Since I've never knit one before, I was a little intimidated. After watching this though, I know I can do it. I'm so excited. Can't wait to get started!
Thank you Staci and Lion Brand. I've just completed my first Cowl called Zuzu's Petals and it came out great. I've been wanting to knit my first sweater for a long time and with your help this will be my first one. I can't wait to get started.
Thank you for this tutorial. You inspired me to knit my first sweater for myself. I used Wool Ease in Forest Green Heather. It was a pleasure to knit with, but the dark color did cause a bit of eyestrain. I added to the length and it fits perfectly.
How fun.. a complete sweater tutorial! Thank you so much.
Love this pattern, think I’ll make one for my niece! You always make each direction make sense! Thanks!
This was my first big project and it worked 😊 Thank you very much. I made it with 3/4 sleeves in rich red color. turned out very pretty.
Thank you so much! I am getting more comfortable with reading patterns. But I always come to your videos when I need to fill in the gaps with a visual.
Thank you sooooo much VeryPinkKnits. I have been making my first raglan cardigan. I had copied this same pattern some time ago. I was doing okay well not too bad then I got to the bind offs for the sleeve. I didn't think I was doing it right so I got on line and went to you tube and found you teaching the very same pattern. Now I am on track once again.
Thank you so much. You mention so many technical details that are already important to me and some that I have never heard of that I am happy to learn!
Thank you for this tutorial. Watching this made it feel much less scary to tackle my first garment. I think I'll give this one a try. I also appreciate that you altered it some to show how it's done. I will be doing the same approximate alterations as I much prefer the look of the longer sleeves and length. Thanks again!!
I just finished this project and I am so pleased! I already knew the basics of knitting , but wasn't sure how to tackle sleeves and button bands. Your tutorial was so clear and easy to follow!! Watching it saved me the $80 it would have cost to take a class at my LYS. Now I can spend that on yarn instead, LOL! Thank you!!
Your techniques and tips are great!
thank you very much for this video. I can't believe how much i've learnt in 39 minutes
I'm so happy that you are not a yarn snob! You are just awesome!
Stephanie Hardman - I've never used the swatches for anything really clever...since the gauges and sizes are so different, it seems like a tough job to seam them into a blanket or something. I can sometimes use them for demonstrating little things in other videos, but usually I just throw them away.
Give them to kids for doll blankets. Or use them as funky coasters (some may work better than others). Fold and sew to make small change purses.
How about coffee mugs
Mug rugs I meant
Starting another one with stashed yarn. Love this pattern. I'm making this one with long sleeves, more ribbing and attaching two buttons toward the top of the bitton band
I did it!! Thank you so much for your excellent instructions. I have never been able to read patterns, but watching you helped me learn. I'm going to try the Sharabella shawl next. Thanks again.
you are a perfect teacher !Love your explanations !It is so clear that I am going to try for myself to knit a sweater .
The little cardi is so cute. I hope, you will find a doll or a teddybear that can wear it.
I just finished and I LOVE IT! Mine looks exactly like yours. You did a great job breaking things down!
Thank you so much for this tutorial and all your other tips. I've been waiting for a great sweater to knit for my mom for Christmas and this is perfect. You've made it so much easier. Thanks!! 😀
Thank you so much Staci! This is going to be my next project as soon as I can decide on what color I want it! I love all your videos!
I have never knit a sweater before, but I think I may take a crack at this. It looks a lot easier than some of the other patterns I have looked at.
Thank you. I have knitted socks forever and was unsure i could do clothing. But this is just great!! I Love cardigans. I am making a childs cardigan as practice . Then i need a few. 😁😁😁😁 keep up the good work.
Your tiny sweater could probably fit a small dog. I started mine and had bad luck because my dog grabbed my sweater out of the bag one day and chewed the needle and broke the plastic, I had to go and buy a new set of circular needles and luckily all I had to do was put the sweater stitches back onto the new circular needles. After having done about 2 inches more I noticed one of the holes on my raglan did not match up in a nice neat row like the other 3, had to rip out 2 inches and match up again. I'm happy to say that I can now carry on again. Can't wait to see the finished sweater because so far I've had some bad luck with it. I'm a bit nervous about trying it on after the 24 rounds are done and putting all the stitches onto a piece of wool. You make it look so easy, can't wait to see the end results. I just may make my dog one since she liked it so much only will put buttons to hold it together under her belly. Thanks again for the tips. Love this video.
I have been knitting for a while, but I have learnt a lot.
I have found Utopia.... I am so excited! I will print my pattern in the morning and START! Thank you, thank you.
You are my favorite teacher Im learning so much from your videos!
Omg so much fun..so far working out well. Thanks for your help
You are amazing!! I love watching your videos, your explanations are so easy to follow! Tks! PS: I'd like the V top down sweater too!!!
Hi! Thank you so much! Im almost finished with my beautiful sweater!..i had a hard time for some reason with the increases looking as nice as yours...BUT after many tries and a few samples. I GOT IT! YOU ARE FANTASTIC!
thanks a lot for such a wonderful cardigan. I've made a large one for my mum and she just loves it. many thanks
Thanks for a great instructional video. I am looking forward to knit this next after I finish the project I am on.
I'm going to try and make this. so I did my swatch, ive never made one before,so I got it done and it was the right length but not long enough.so I started another one glanced to see how many rows and noticed it was different then what I'd done ,I had18 on the brain so I fixed it and it came out perfect !!! lol thank you for your time and effort to helping us get things right I've learned so much . thank you
You are the best. So easy to understand . Im using so much of my time watching other videos, but with your videos, i get it right away. 😍😍😍
You are a great teacher. I have never knitted top down, but looks so much better . I have knitted for years but you have given great tips. Top down isnt to well known in Australian patterns Thanks heaps.Well here goes . I have subscribed . I will let you know how my first project goes.
Thank you for sharing this. I've never down a top down sweater and I can't wait to try this one!
Love love love this project. You're such an AWESOME instructor. Naming you my Knitting Teacher! 😆
Thank you for the tutorial, Staci! Love your nails!
I love Lion Brand! I used Wool-Ease several times for sweaters. Should say that after several washes, my child's sweater became fuzzy looking mess. Your advice on not to dry it in a dryer does make sense.
Another my favorite is Cotton-Ease, not sure if it is still in production.
I’m pretty sure you’re my idol! Thanks for this tutorial. I’ve actually made four of them because my sister and sisters-in-law “stole” the first three😊. Next, I’m going to buy your men’s sweater pattern , hopefully that turns out just as awesome . Thanks again !
I love this sweater, thanks for the tutorial.
Beautiful sweater, very professional looking! I think this will be my first attempt at a cardigan, thanks!
please could you do a video on a top down v neck cardigan im dying to try this thank you
I'd like that too! I couldn't find anywhere!!
Yes, please. I can not find a help on top down v neck sweater!
Thanks for your answer to my question about making the sweater longer! I watched the tutorial and got an answer there which is why I removed my question! Thanks again; this looks like a great sweater to make and hopefully I can get to it soon. At the moment I'm knitting the Ecuador and it's taking me forever. I'm a slow knitter and there are lots of stitches in that one!!
Love all your videos, I'm getting so much better at making my project look great!
30 hours into a sweater??? Thank you for that invaluable tip!!
I loved this video. So much important information! Thanks so much
Thank you for this tutorial. I love that the sleeves are knit flat. I have done other raglan top-down sweaters and have always knit the sleeves circular. That's fine, but the flat is even better. Also the increases for the raglan shaping of the sleeves is so much simpler. This sweater looks like a dream to knit. Can't wait to make one. I have too many other things to make first however. Maybe this sweater will be the incentive I need to get the other projects done in a timely manner???? Love your tutorials, they are always so clear and easy to understand. Thanks for all you do :-)
Such a gorgeous Cardi. So many projects, so little time!! I wish I speed knit and had more time to knit everything! LOL - Lovely video, as always! ;)
Thank you. I was actually waiting for a project like that. I am off to the yarn store..........
You know what that means. Lol.
Again thank you for all your efforts and talent you share.
I don’t see your name anywhere? I enjoy your videos so much. You are a great, patient instructor!
Such a great video. You rock, Staci. Thanks.
You obviously have not met my husband. 😂 only person I know that can felt washable wools. Mind you I have yet to be able to felt myself some slippers. The man grabs my hat and it comes out of the dryer perfectly shaped and the the size for an American girl doll. Well at least my friend's daughter's are happy.
Thanks for this tutorial! I want to make open-front raglan cardigans/shrugs for my Granddaughter in size 4T. I can't find a video tutorial anywhere for a kids version. There are lots of free patterns on ravelry, but it's Greek to me. I bought the same yarn you are using, & I'm making same size you are making... to gain an understanding of the cardigan. Hopefully, that will help me understand how to make a 4T.
How can l get the pattern for size medium or large size?
Thank you for wonderful tutorials!
Curse you Lion Brand for not shipping to the UK! Sigh, I shall improvise with some other yarn. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Great tutorial!!! Can you make the sleeves longer for colder weather wear?? How would one go about doing that?? Thanks, Staci!!
I got so frustrated with this pattern when it came to the yarn over increases. I started over twice, about ready to give up when I realized that I am supposed to do the increases 28 times (I’m making a large) not 28 rows. I counted the holes, and I have 11 more to do. So, if anyone has the same problem, count the holes, not the rows.
Yes, the pattern says to work the YO increases every right-side row a total of 26-30 times (depending on the size you're knitting). Every other row is a plain purl row.
Love your theme song! So cute!
Thank you for the free tutorial. Can you provide some information about the ease at the bust? My measurements fall in between a medium and large and wonder which size I should knit? Thank you.
VeryPink Knits I love it I have been hounding your channel for this! THANK YOU
Thank you for your comment I appreciate it.
Hi, when increasing the last wrong side row in the ribbing, the pattern says inc 2 (4,2,4,6) - sts evenly spaced - 88 (94, 100, 106, 112). Cause I am making a large, does this mean I increase 4 stitches but where exactly do I make the increases? Little confusing. thanks.
Jennifer Sanchez-Ellis - "Large" is the third set of instructions, so the increase number is 2. Just place the increases evenly, anywhere. Really, any time a pattern tells you this you can place them anywhere - if it was important, the pattern would be more specific about where to place them.
Jennifer Sanchez-Ellis did your LG. sweater come out right??
I like to tie the ends of the scrap yarn holding my sleeves together in a knot. I have 3 young children running around and this way I know the yarn holding my sleeves is not going to get accidentally pulled out.
you are an amazing teacher...
Adorei seu vídeo, com tutorial super bem explicado, pena que não é legendado em português .Pois seria mais rápido o acompanhamento da aula.Obrigada😘
I made this it turned out beautiful and I love it,I made it in ex-LG So I'm trying to make the LG. for some reason I cannot get it started out right to me the numbers don't match up,what the track am I doing wrong.love you tutorial s you are awesome thankyou omg finally got what I was doing wrong !!
Your tutorials are exceptional. Unfortunately, although we speak the same language, American English uses "knit" as a past tense, instead of "knitted". I wonder why? Just a thought.
Another great tutorial. Thanks Staci. 🇬🇧
I just discovered your channel. Your videos are verry helpfull , so much to learn from. I just subscribed. Thank you
Thank you.. if i want to make the sleeve full length do i need to make decreases in certain places or i just continue with the same number of stitches?
It depends on what you're after. Sorry, I can't really help you with pattern modifications, I personally would decrease a bit to the cuff for full-length sleeves.
This is wonderful! I've knitted two of these top-down cardigans for my grandchildren but the pattern I used was written so that the front 'button' bands are included in the main knitting (ie you don't have to go back separately and pick up the stitches from the fronts). I could modify your pattern so that the front bands are knitted in from the start, couldn't't I? xx
+Louizalass - you could, yes - but the button band knit in a different direction is kind of important to the structure. Picking up the stitches and creating that "seam" gives structure to the front of the sweater.
Hi Staci, may I ask you a question....I was thinking if it is possible to make a long sleeve in the round, instead of knitting flat, so that we do not have to seam them when it's finished..what do you say?..Thank you for this video...I love all of them..
Yes, that can be done.
Thank You, another time a wonderful tutorial!!!
Thank you so much for the sweater link - my next project - thanks again.
Thank you so much, I follow the pattern easyly.
What help the technique of bind off ? why do the bind off groups, please?!
Hi Staci love your videos but I'm having a hard time understanding patterns can you a tutorial on pattern reading thank you.
Even if I know how to do what they say I should do I just have a hard time on how to do it unless the pattern is written out stitch for stitch.
You are very good at what you do, love your presentation and your voice does not annoy me lots of people have good videos but their voices hurt my ears. I have to wear hearing aids and your voice is great for deaf people. How many balls of wool for the sweater I'm about your size?
Diane Reid-Lapointe - all of the info about yarn amounts are on my website here: verypink.com/2014/10/22/cropped-raglan-cardi-tutorial/. I used 4 skeins of Wool-Ease Worsted. My videos are also CC'd by hand, so the transcript is perfect (not machine generated), if you chose to use CC.
Very nice! Thank you for the tutorial.
I am knitting this sweater and need help. I am at the ribbing at the bottom and have the correct count 172. Then it says to decrease 2. Am I reading this wrong, if I do that the 2x2 ribbing won't have an even count.
Dose doing a " yarn -over " count as a increase .? . I think you said yes . Thanks this is a fun project...
Hi. I’m working on this project now. I want to make the sleeves longer, as you did. Did you have to do any shaping? Thanks!
