- There's one mistake that cruisers will always regret! The worst part is that it's avoidable, if only cruisers knew in advance. Are new cruisers aware & informed about this expensive mistake? This video is a must-watch for all cruisers.
In this video I share what not to do on a cruise, as this will result in an expensive lesson. Cruise travellers have even asked cruise lines to refund this expense, but unfortunately this probably isn't the cruise line's fault.
Even seasoned cruisers can forget and do this on a cruise. If you're cruising with Carnival, Royal Caribbean or any other cruise line, this video includes cruise tips & travel advice that is much needed.

Yes the cruise should let the passengers know. If it wasn't for my daughter inlaw I would've a big bill. Now I put my phone in air plane mode.
I think a big sign at the port as you first head to the gangway that reads, "Is your phone in Airplane Mode? Check with your mobile provider about coverage. Ask us about our WIFI package!" , or something like that, with a big Airplane Mode symbol in the centre would do the trick. Posters and plastic mountings are cheap, it would show that the cruise line cares, and is a fallback for if people blame them for their cell phone bills.
Exactly. While I'm not in favor of upselling in general, this might even be a money-maker for cruise lines! It seems a no-brainer that they could do something like this.
While that probably would help a lot of people, there will still be people who don't read the signs, or think it doesn't apply to them.
With all of the "apps" they tell you about and using the phone to access the planner you have to put your phone into airplane mode. It's listed all over the place, even before the apps they would advise "Turn off your cell phone, don't use it on a ship" It's even listed in your booking information. If people still don't see it in their papers and through the final booking/check in process a sign certainly isn't going to work. Folks don't see the signs exiting about staying on "ship time" or "no camo" even after it's listed in the Fun Times.
@@heideleskun1163Completely agree.
Princess Cruises with the medallion app you will never get wiFi unless airplane mode is turned on. Crew members on embarkation day shows or tells you as soon as you come to sign into your muster station with your medallion. So no need to worry.
It's definitely not the cruise lines fault or responsibility, but mentioning this during a mandatory muster would be a great benefit for people who aren't aware. ....
I don't think to a certain extent that the cruise line is responsible. But they should definitely put up signs and or make an announcement during the muster meeting.
I think it's just good customer service to warn passengers of the pitfalls. Those with teenagers might be especially grateful!
Those with teenagers should do themselves (and all the rest of us 😁) a favour and leave them at home. 😉
My phone stays locked in the cabin safe. I cruise to get away from technology not to be chained to it constantly. Know that doesn’t work for most people’s situation but it is very liberating for me. I can totally relax.
No joke! $2300 for one week cruise! My iPhone was on airplane mode but I totally forgot about my iPad and laptop! 💻 🤦🏽♀️ Learn from my mistake. ….And there should be signs 🪧 everywhere stating “turn phone on airplane mode”.
Oh no! So true other devices might be affected
@@LifeWellCruisedCan these other devices be put on airplane mode?
There have been lots of signs every time I cruise....
So glad you said that!!! I wouldn’t think about the iPad? 😱
@@Selena-gz9ts
Yes.
Don’t forget to put your other devices in airplane mode too! I almost forgot to put my Apple Watch in airplane mode on my last cruise
Good point
Holy cow! I would not have thought of my Apply Watch! Thank you so much for the reminder!
I never thought of that! Thanks so much! They better add Apple-type watches, iPads, Kindles, and e-readers to the warning lists!
Thanks for that!!!!
Absolutely they should tell people, I had no idea!!!
Yes they should! Even seasoned cruisers can forget. At the muster drill would be a good idea. As well as in the room.
A nice sign on embarkation and another on the wall behind Guest Services desk. And last but not least in your room.
Our last cruise, we put our phones in AIRPLANE MODE. We had included WIFI. We then put the phones in WIFI CALLING MODE. Worked great.
How did you connect to the ship's WIFI with airplane mode engaged?
@davidf6326 after placing the phone in Airplane mode, turn ON Wi-Fi.
@@MrHardhatharry Yes, I know that - I should, I've worked in the mobile computing arena for forty years.
My point was, the OP never mentioned that stage. What's more, as soon as you re-enable WIFI, you've disabled airplane mode to all intents and purposes. In fact, it's strange that Android doesn't make that clearer.
I have a lot of difficulty learning English, but I'm studying to work on a cruise in two years. Everything to support my family and make my dreams come true.
I absolutely agree…people need to take responsibility for themselves. After all, we are adults
I agree it's not ultimately down to the cruise company, but it would be a nice gesture for their customers - especially given the typical age demographic.
Cruise lines should definitely put sign or make announcement about this.
"Should there be ..." Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes!! The cruise lines should inform their customers of the need to put the phone in airplane mode. The airlines do it on every flight!
Good point
THIS!
They already do when connecting to the WiFi.
Airlines do it for safety. You can’t change idiocy because they’re incapable of understanding roaming charges
It happened to me once when I first started cruising. Tough lesson learned.
HIGHLY visible in cabin including WHY
Not cruise-related, but my nephew had an unforeseen issue with his phone company when he called his landlady a couple of times, who lives in Australia. In the back of his mind, he knew where she lived, but over the years he had gotten used to just picking up the phone and having unlimited calling. My sister (whose phone plan he was on) called the company and asked if there was anything that could be done, and the operator switched their plan to an international one. It was a smaller amount to pay than the cost of the two calls, it covered those calls that month, and she switched it back to the original the following month.
All that to say this: call your phone company instead of your cruise line!
Sign in the cabin in big letters
Good idea
Yes! People are excited and probably taking lots of photos.
This would be me 😁
I do think there should be more signage and/or announcements about turning your phone to airplane mode, but it never ceases to amaze me that some people just don’t do their research or just read what’s on the cruise line’s site.
I just made a note in bold on my iPad and phone calendar to remind myself and my family to turn on airplane mode the day we leave on our cruise this September! Thank you!
I have never worried about this . Never used my phone at all on a cruise. Since they are making you basically use your phone for reservations etc , they need to remind people
It is very simple for the cruise line. Put a sign on every hallway with the following text: “Keep Your Cellphones On Airplane Mode.”
I'm happy the camera works in Airplane mode. 🤗 It's the only thing we use our phones for on the ship. 🥂 I think at the muster and at the end of the safety briefing would be nice. Everyone has to do these.
After watching videos like this and reading multiple Facebook posts, I am continually amazed that many of these people can actually figure out how to even find the ship. Telling them to put phone in airplane mode will just confuse them. After all, they're not on a plane
I think it's better to be confused than to pay hundreds of $$$ dollars.
@@carl2724 - doesn't matter to me either way. I know how my phone works.
Good point. The term "airplane mode" can be confusing to people. It isn't really about airplanes; it's about stopping the apps on your phone from continually using a data connection to continually update themselves.
I am with you, how are these people managing throughout their daily lives?
@@HeatherTravels You're right. A different name makes a lot of difference. A friend of mine wouldn't take a stress test the doctor ordered because, "I have enough stress in my life!"
I am 100 percent sure that on carnival it is in the app when you get on
It would be a nice gesture to have several spots, on the cruise ship, that putting your cell phone in airplane mode, is spotted. Perhaps a sign as you board the ship, one in your stateroom, and also other common areas.
Love this
Excellent information, thank you!!!
Thank you for the reminder!
Yes, the cruise lines should post information around the ship covering the cell phone issue and explain why it's a good idea.
Yes! I didn't know anything about that until your video!
There should be a note left in each cabin, warning everybody of it so they do it right away and it should say immediately put your phone on airplane mode or your phone carrier will charge you
Hmmm maybe this is true
Nah what should happen is people should read their contracts that they sign and are liable for. It states quite clearly what charges you can incur for what things. The line is not responsible for peoples incompetence and lack of preparation.
My first cruise will be in September. I have watched so many videos to prepare and this is the first I heard of putting my phone in airplane mode. Thank you for sharing!
Well then I’m super happy I mentioned it :)
Signage at your muster station checkin and your stateroom as a reminder may help. My wife told me the first time we started to cruise to put my phone on airplane mode. I asked why, we're not on a plane. She explained and now I'm a little wiser. Excellant posting today love your tips.
Good reminder for us all Ilana. Yes, they should remind us. An announcement or notice in the cabin would be helpful. ❤
Great video. Thanks
Yes, you need to call your cellphone company and check for plans BEFORE taking the cruise. And remember that the plan for inside the ship could be different than the one for the port of call; so be sure to ask all the necessary questions.
Any kind of reminder would be helpful. Especially for first time cruisers.
Yeah, I really think the cruise line should send a precruise email and have a sign in each state room. Maybe even include it in the muster drill. New cruisers would not know unless told. It just seems like taking that extra step in caring well for their guests.
Why???
You're making the cruise line into a parent
We are taking our first cruise next month! So excited! Your videos have become a staple in preparing for it!!!!
So exciting!! What cruise are you doing?
I put a reminder in my phone to put my phone in airplane mode on a ship. When I get home from one cruise, I go ahead and change the date for the next one. That’s been helpful to me.
This was an excellent discussion regarding cell phone use on a cruise. This is a mystery to many.
You’re the best 🎉
A sign in the cabin would be nice
I didn’t know!!! Yes needs to be posted in every cabin!!
yes a note in your cabin would be nice, thanks for your awareness
I love your videos so much and they are so helpful! ❤ Can you make one on royal Caribbean cruise to Alaska?
Thank you for the reminder!!! Going on the Sun Princess next month (haven't cruised in years) and had TOTALLY forgotten about this. I need to do more studying, review our Plus plan, and call the phone company.
Just got back from my first cruise. It was fun.
We always purchase an ESIM card through Airlo. Works great and we don’t worry about charges.
I have Verizon and the Travel Pass plan they have is only $10 per line/per day for countries not included in your regular plan. Canada and Mexico are included in my plan, so in these countries I can use my phone like I do in the US and not incur any additional charges. The other countries, for example, Honduras, it would only cost me $10 for the whole day. I just keep Travel Pass activated on my plan and just check to see if the countries Im visiting are in their list. But, I immediately put my phone in airplane mode and activate the ships wifi once on the ship. Once in port, I turn off airplane mode, then turn it back on as soon as I reboard the ship.
We did this as well. Worked great!
Carnival Hub states “place phone in airplane mode then sign onto the carnival WiFi”.
That’s one of the first things I read, also.
Yes, a reminder is good, signage.
I love your hair!!!
So on my last cruise, one of the perks was a 350MB bundle each (mum and me) - I thought that wouldn't be enough, so I bought a 3GB package in advance. I understood that my phone would be using the 350MB first and then move onto the 3GB. But my 350 was going down at the speed of light, while for my mum it was lasting a really long time. That's when I realised that I hadn't put my Apple watch on airplane mode! Lesson learned!
As I'm European and was cruising in Europe, the bundle that I use at home can also be used in the countries I went to - the only exception was when we went to Monaco, and the guide terrified us into putting our phones into airplane mode. I've decided that I'm going to buy an e-sim this year, so I'll use that in Monaco.
As for the ship, I have a different bundle which gives both me and my mum 3GB each - and my watch will immediately go into airplane mode and stay there, lol.
Re. the time when your ship waited 20 minutes and then had to leave, that's still better than the recent ship which not only did not wait for passengers (even though they'd missed the 'all aboard' time, not the departure time, for reasons of illness on shore), but refused calls from the harbormaster and emails from head office. I know that we had people who raced down the dock exactly two minutes before the ship left, and I'm sure they got a stern talking to by the captain, but they weren't left behind.
These stories make me even more determined to only take excursions organised by the cruise line - I'm not going to be worrying about traffic jams or bus breakdowns etc - I'll let them do the worrying!
Carnival does tell you to put your phone in airplane mode. It's in writing.
I figured they do, but yet so many people still don’t realize (on carnival as well as other lines of course)
THANK YOU ❣️
I love your videos, so much great information. I think in this day and age with everyone using a cell phone, my thoughts are that all cruise lines should put info on their website as to cell phone usage if they haven’t done so already. Maybe have a brochure in each cabin as to cell phone usage and or have the captain announce it’s time to put your cell in airplane mode or have a sign as you first board the ship… more info is definitely needed. Happy cruising!
Yes they need to inform people. I am taking my first cruise in July and would have never known.
Thank you for this valuable information, I think we should take care of these things by researching vacations we are going on. RUclips has information on everything and I for one use it.
I would put the reminder on the paper you get in your rooms to tell you on the day activities.
I like the reminder about airplane mode in the cabin. Of all the stuff to remember, that’s a really important thing. 😮
Thank you the tips. We will be going on our first cruise in Sept. We think it would be nice if they told you about putting the phone in airplane mode at your muster station. Airplanes always make an announcement at the start of the flight.
Thank you for another great video. FYI, I took your past advice about things to do before your cruise and I made a dental appointment the week before I went. They actually found a problem and I have made a follow up appointment for when I get back home and I have measures in place if my mouth gives me a problem during the trip. YOU ARE THE BEST!
That is awesome! So glad you won’t have an issue & will have peace of mind
Princess has a printed instruction sheet in your cabin on boarding day explaining to go to Airplane and how to use Medallion Net. It was easy to follow and we've never experienced any additional charges.
I think it would be nice to have it posted in the terminal and as you board the ship.
As a first time cruiser a couple years ago, I was paranoid about it, and was happy to see and hear reminders. Royal Caribbean Harmony. Not to mention all the research we did. We also learned a lot from cruiser comments.
It's easy to miss things with all the excitement. Still on us though!
Congrats on your 300K ⚓⚓⚓
Thanks!!
On my recent trip to Europe I bought an Orange Sim Card that came with 12 gigs of data and unlimited text and phone calls within Europe and 30 mins and 200 texts to North America. It cost about $40 Canadian. It was good for 14 days.
I did the same on a Danube cruise last fall. Pretty easy and cheap. My cell phone provider said they'd sell me a $14 a day package otherwise.
I’m in Canada also and going to to northern Europe this August, where did you purchase this card from. Thanks
@@roxannefindlay8742 I got it from Amazon
Since we all need to have the app on our phones to do stuff on the cruise, it would help to have a big pop up reminding the person to use airplane mode. Have to do that anyway to use the Royal wifi.
It would be a great idea for the cruise lines to have a Things to Know sheet in every cabin. As you said, there’s so many new cruisers and even experience cruisers that forget to put it on airplane mode as well as some of the other tips that you have brought up. We are given informational sheets for so many different items but this would be one that is invaluable.
A sign in the stateroom would be helpful
If this is such a common occurrence then yes I feel there should be a sign. Thanks for clarifying this! 😊
We all ways put ours on Air Plane mode and leave it on when off the ship.
I would never know until I went looking for cruise channels before my first cruise. Should be put in information when booking
I'm taking my first cruise in July. I would never have known to put my phone and iPad on airplane mode on the cruise ship if not for your videos Ilana....thank you! Definitely, the cruise ships should do as much as they can to let the passengers know this and what options are available to them. I have learned so much watching your videos and I feel that I am totally prepared for my first cruise. Thanks again for all your knowledge and cruise tips! ❤
The ships have wireless, so you are OK on the ship.
Airplane mode and WiFi-Calling is a godsend.
I really do like your information you provide on cruises. This one on cell phone use on cruises was very informative. We had a hefty bill after our first cruise we took. After a helpful phone call with our cell phone provider we were educated on what we should do on future trips. Yes,! I agree the cruise lines should provide a helpful suggestion that passengers put their devices on airplane mode.
I have always just turned my phone OFF and put it in the safe for the whole cruise. Bliss.
The only way I knew about airplane mode during my cruise was thanks to you and your videos!
A sign in the cabins would be great!
Possibly include the info in one of the pre-sail emails the cruise line sends. And on their website in the section for info for booked guests.
NCL LETS YOU KNOW IN THEIR SAIL AWAY INFO
That's great NCL does that and the rest should follow suit.
I'm going my 4th cruise but I haven't done 1 for quite a while. Very good info as the last one was to Alaska, no cell service the whole trip.
Thank you for this information. We are 1st time cruisers and leave May 16 th.
We had no idea and Iwould of not done so.
So again "Thank You Very Much."
And I think the cruise lines should inform there visitors to do this..
Lessons learned! If the cruise line wanted to get this information across, they could have in some paperwork that they offer like for activities, etc. I have only cruised twice and luckily I haven’t had any issues! Thanks again!😊
I think they should tell passengers at the muster drill.
Good point
They don't all have regular muster drills. They have them on the TV and on your phones. People don't always listen to the safety videos so why would you expect them to listen about the phone instructions at that time.
Leaving on an Alaska cruise/tour next week and was thrilled to learn that Canada and Mexico are included with Verizon plans in the US.
Beware roaming charges. It will only be "free" if you disable roaming. Your carrier may not have service in some areas. Be sure you know how. Double check with a crew member. Look at your carriers map of service.
A sign when boarding the ship and at the muster station would be the right thing to do to remind guests about airplane mode. Maybe the daily planner too.
Happy Mother's Day 💐
Thank you for the videos! Great information! So helpful!
I have few questions, what is the best way to keep track of time? Is the ship time always the same as port time? We are going to Alaska cruise. And will stop at Victoria BC for 5 hours. Just wanted to make sure we have the correct time. Thanks!!
I would say, putting some kind of notification in each cabin
Great video, Ilana! Perhaps it would be a good idea if the ship printed a daily warning in the brochure of happenings which is delivered to the room (or to apps) every day of the cruise. Passengers are bound to see it there.
Good to know. I am going in my first cruise this fall. I have not heard that your phone should be in airplane ✈️ mode! Thank you for the heads up!
Before the cruise, I check with my provider and make sure we are covered when in ports. We put our phones in airplane mode during the sail away party and keep them that way except when in port. I do think a reminder from the cruise line would be a good idea and would not cost much to do.
The more information they give the better.
Why don't they include a checklist that cruisers must initial or sign off on? For instance, they could add it to the app as part of the pre-boarding process when scheduling boarding times. The checklist could cover important rules such as phones in airplane mode, no smoking, drug use, disruptive behavior, and ensuring children are not left unattended- as examples.
Yes it would be a good idea if there was a notice in your cabin
Thank you for this great information. I knew about the phone, but never even considered my Apple watch ⌚️ 😅
Carnival routinely AND frequently reminds people to place phones on Airplane mode. It is mentioned in the muster drill. It is also written in the daily planner!
Princess Cruiselines did advise us on embarkation but no signs in rooms or common areas. Most phones have dual SIM or SIM + eSIM. We purchased eSIM through Airalo app - many choices for individual countries, regions or global and easy to top up if needed.
Turning your primary SIM off while cruising will work.
Yes, they should do more to remind people about airplane mode. It's in their best interest since the passengers that end up with large cellphone bills will associate it with the cruise.
