Thanks for this. I am looking for an 18” ride and for the price and all around features, The Lemon seems like a very good buy. The Roland won’t work with my module so thanks to Roland for saving me $400! Seriously, as a non professional, investing almost $500 on one cymbal is overkill for me. I am glad that there are companies out there that are making products that we can enjoy without stressing out about cost. Once agin, excellent video.
Just played the 18 Roland and Digital Snare on my brothers td50x. Was impressed more by the ride than the snare though both were very nice. Also surprised how good my td10 still sounds in comparison!
I recently purchased an efnote 5 (with an 18inch ride)... A shame it's hard to find seperate, really. It's such a good cymbal! Great video by the way! I really appreciate the effort you put into them! Cheers from France!
ROLAND WARNING!!! MY td-50-KVX had a ride cymbal with the hot spot on the bow that triggered the edge sound. Roland promptly sent a replacement that had the same problem. So I got it replaced, only to receive another ride with the same defect. Plus, the kit at my church had it as well. So I just gave up and programmed the edge to play the bow sound. So now, I have a very expensive 2-zone ride cymbal. NOT WORTH THE PRICE since the other exclusive features of the digital ride don't make it appreciably better than the ATV.
Great comparison, mate! I own several Lemons and also the CY-18DR and use them on a Roland TD50x. While the CY-18DR is just lovely to play, the lemons (especially the 18" ones) have a weird bow-edge separation. They tend to pick up the bow zone if you hit the edge too soft. So you have to hit quite hard, which makes playing swells quite annoying. Never experienced that with genuine Roland pads.
Thanks! Oh, that's a shame! I've not experienced this with mine and I've generally found the edge to be very sensitive on the pads I own. That said, at the price they sell for, I wouldn't be that surprised if there was a bit less consistency between different batches of pads than some of the bigger/more reknowned manufacturers. I've had the bow trigger on the edge of my old CY-15R now and again, usually if I come in at a bit too much of a vertical angle with the stick, but it never happens on my Roland digital ride, the zone blending is top notch on it.
I've got a review of the eDRUMin 10 on the channel. It's also hardware, not just software, but it's basically like a module without a screen with the software doing the job of the module's screen.
I have owned the ATV and the Roland. Roland is better overall, but I miss ATV's bell size. One thing I like from Roland cymbals is the rubber quality, as it results in a nicer feel.
Anxiously waiting for an in-depth review of the new Yamaha dtx 8k kits. With larger pad sizes, its a much more appealing contender in the mid price range competing closely with the roland vad306 but to my ears sounds far better than the TD17 and even the TD27. Would be amazing to learn the expansion possibilities of the dtx pro model (including using it with splitters) and sound tests as I feel not a lot of people have spoken about this, let alone demonstrated it on RUclips.
I know they are not listed here but I recently bit the bullet and bought some low volume jobeky cymbals. I can honestly say it was a great investment and will be hard for me to go back to rubber. I am extremely interested in the Roland digital pads (Ride, Snare, and how HH). I imagine at some point I will eventually want to go that route. But I also assume that at some point Roland will have a fully digital kit with all pads being digital. The only issue with that ... will my mortgage be paid off before they release that and I see the cost of a kit like that if they do release it? As far as the Lemon goes, I wonder about the quality of it long term? With that, I think a good option for this could be use it as a crash that gets hit less if you want bigger all around cymbal setup. Thinking you will not hit a crash as much as you hit the ride. Also, I don't really like the design on the top of the Gewa if you are buying as an addon. If you have it with the other cymbals it would fit though.

I recently upgraded to the digital pads and my ride seems to have that same issue you had. I get a random edge sound while playing about dead center of the playing area on the bow. I guess my next stop is contacting Roland.
Is there any way that you can change the edge and the body of the Roland 18" into difference cymbals? I was going to buy a crash and turn it into a china....but If I could make the body of the ride a ride, and the edge a china I could save some $$. Rarely use the edge of my ride on acoustic set. Gonna purchase the TD27kv2 which includes the digital CY-18DR ride. Thanks!
Great question I want to do the same thing with programming 2 different cymbals on bow and edge. I just sent Roland a support ticket asking about that actually, but it contained many advanced questions, and so who knows if they will ever answer me cuz as u probably know, the Roland customer service isn't known for being able to do anything other than read back to you exactly what it says in the owners manuals and the owners manuals don't usually cover any of these outside of the box questions..
Hello to both of you! Sorry, I missed this when it was posted. Yes, you can change the instrument assignment of any zone independently on the current generation of Roland modules. So you could do this for 3 zones on the digital ride - bell, bow and edge. All you need to do is press the button labelled "H&R" to turn it off (transparent) - this is the "head and rim link". When it's off, any instrument settings you change on one zone won't affect the other. So turn it off, hit your ride's edge, swap instruments for that and you'll be good to go.
Hey man great video! Kind of an odd question, but I'm playing styles on an electric that I use a z custom megabell ride for acoustically. That thing weighs over 10 pounds and doesnt move much even with hard playing. Are there 3rd party rotation stops that don't swing much or at all? I'm using a roland CY13R, and it swings like crazy because of that wedge bit under the cymbal bell for "realism" lol. Looking at an 18 for a bigger bell zone and more stability like I am used to with my mega bell. What would you recommend?
I bought a used CY-18DR digital ride from ebay, and the right side (at 3 oclock) is a little less hot at the bow than the left side (at 9 oclock). This is with the Roland logo in the back, where is it suppose to be. Is this normal? I'm using it with a TD-27 module.
Hey Luke, interesting to see you use edrumin software to test the capability of these cymbals. Would you recommend the edrumin 10 as a primary module over something like a td12? I'm mostly planning to trigger through sd3 regardless of which module I choose.
I think if you know you definitely don't want any in-built sounds and you're pretty proficient with setting up trigger parameters, the eDRUMin is fantastic for that and the price is great. I've got a full review on the channel, check it out if you haven't seen it. Some features like the positional sensing on the cymbals have been added since I did the review, so it's constantly getting better.
Yeah, I imagine so since they're very similar and EFNOTE are ex-ATV. I can't imagine their playability would differ too much, though they could have made some tweaks!
would the smaller size lemon cymbals like the 15 inch 3 zone ride be able to have positional sensing on an edrumin? thinking of getting one only to connect the ride so i can use my td17 with a more realistic ride for midi, would there be any problems with connecting both the td 17 and e drum in to work for vsts?
I didn't get reliable results from my 15" ones back when I was testing them. It was inconsistent at best. However, there is now a Lemon/Yamaha PS algorithm included and I haven't tried my 15" ones since this was implemented so it might work better now. Probably best to have a look on Audiofront's forums and see what people's experiences have been. It will be a while before I dive into my eDRUMin again.
The TD-17 module does not HAVE positional sensing. If U want positional sensing U have to upgrade to the TD-27. Don't waste your time trying different cymbals.. That said I would also like to know if all the smaller sized even down to 10" (made by all the different cymbal makers) Jobecki, Triggera, Lemon, ATV, how do all of them work with positional sensing? (Again this must be tested on a TD-27 or Td-50 of course)
I had to turn off edge triggering on my Roland digital cymbal due to it double triggering. Roland wouldn’t fix it, I have 2 of them both do the same thing. Disappointed with the whole situation since these are supposed to be their premium cymbal. Currently looking for other companies to support until Roland gets off their “king” perch and starts picking up their game again.
You should get one of those fuzzy boom microphones to put above you out of frame while you talk, that way you don't have to mess with bringing that mic in and out. EDIT: love the video tho lol
Do you disagree with the idea of nylon tips, and the fraying of wood eventually catching and tearing the mesh heads? I'm terrified to use straight wood tips on the electric kit!
I don't disagree with using nylon tips if you like them. I've personally not had issues with wooden tips, but I make sure to never use the same sticks on an acoustic kit to avoid any fraying or chips on the sticks. I also make sure I've always got rubber rim guards on as an exposed metal rim could fray the sticks too. Some people have issues with stick wear with their wooden tips from the mesh heads but it's only something I've encountered with a particular head. On the other hand, I've personally had an issue with nylon tips before. I once actually had some nylon tips that had a bit of a point on the end that caught on the mesh head. So checking that the nylon is smooth is a good idea, but otherwise you can use any sticks. I made a video answering the question and some others a bit ago - ruclips.net/video/yZu6whAra_A/видео.html

I only have a electric kit so I don't have that problem, although I definitely wish I did! I actually never thought I'd have a electric drum set, I always thought it was blasphemy!
I use nylon tips exclusively on my Td10. I noticed on my brothers td50 that his cymbals and hi-hats had stick marks from the wood tips he uses. After pointing it out he has switched to nylon for his ekit. The nylon tips dont leave marks...
@@TheeDrumWorkshop The snare is also the best....and the new vh14d are the best hats;) Tested almost all on market (except lemon-stuff) and Roland is the hardware winner on all fronts as far as I can see/feel;) But you get what you pay for....Roland is not cheap:)
As mentioned up top (around 0:54), I haven't been able to try out the EFNOTE ride yet so couldn't include it. As far as I'm aware, it's nearly identical to the ATV cymbal so I would expect similar results, though there are probably a couple of design tweaks that might make it a little different.
The problem with almost ALL of these reviews is that guys tend to test things with some module like Roland. That's a shame because just about any sound module is terrible compared to Superior Drummer 3. For the cost of a eDRUMin, M1 Mac Mini a decent touch screen you can have, what I believe, would be the best sound module. I don't know how these companies get away with charging $2500 for modules that are absolute garbage.
Is the sound source a "problem" for the testing of gear if all of the functionality is being shown off with modules or hardware that can utilise them? I use Roland modules for a lot of demos because a lot of people use Roland modules and they have a decent range of trigger options and features such as positional sensing. They're a pretty good standard baseline for response. I also cover other modules that I own when it's appropriate and I tested all of the compatible cymbals using the eDRUMin in this video, so that base is also covered. Other than wishing you could hear the sound of specific ride cymbals from SD3, what exactly is it that you wish would be demonstrated using it that isn't covered by the rest of the testing? (Genuinely curious, not meaning to come across as antagonistic.)
@@TheeDrumWorkshop Don't get me wrong. The review is still very helpful and worth watching. Regarding this specific review, one of the questions that comes up for me personally is: if I never plan to use the Roland module, can I really take advantage of the extra sensing tech that is built into these symbols/pads from within Superior Drummer? If these bells and whistles only comes into play when paired with a Roland module but have no bearing when paired with a competitor's module or VST software, why would I spend the extra cash on the Roland Cymbal? And most guys that are willing to spend this kind of money, probably know a good sounding ride from a bad one. More importantly however, and this is probably a huge topic but an important on. I just think that when it comes to eDrums, there are two camps out there. 1. the guys that can spend $9K on a top fo the line Roland kit; or 2. the DIYers that would rather build something themselves. For the guys that can shell out the cash for a Roland - they usually know what they're doing and expect the most realistic sound they can get, unless they're Ben Affleck buying a Christmas gift for JLO. No matter how you spin it, in the last decade, Roland has done next to nothing to improve their sounds. Manipulate? Maybe, but definitely not "improve." They really need to spend $$$ on sound design and hire someone like Paul Mabury from IWTS Drums and have him sample the crap out of different kits and possibly do sound design. They also need to COMPLETELY change their interface. Those silly encoder knobs have to go. Think about it, you can get a full featured digital console with impact resistant 15" screens for not much more than these modules. But the console has virtually unlimited processing potential with FPGA processors built in to process 64+ channels of audio. For the price Roland charges, and the garbage you get in return as far as module goes, they should hang their head in shame. Pearl Mimmic Pro is the closest attempt at a remedy that I have seen yet, but for $2500 it still falls very very short, as that screen is too finicky to work with and sound limitations are obvious and are geared toward Rock/Pop Rock, whereas with SD3 you can get some really nice vintage sounds, or jazz, or whatever you desire really. The DIYers are the guys that are DIYers for a reason. They want the best bang for their buck and they are likely to spend the time/effort but get the darn thing to do exactly what they want including and ESPECIALLY getting the best possible sounds which almost certainly will lead to Superior Drummer 3 and the expansions. Like I said, you can spend about the same amount on a Macbook Air M1, or a MacMini M1 which can pretty much handle what you throw at it in terms of processing, load up a bunch of kits onto separate tracks inside Logic/Garage bands, and just flip through those kits using a simple $30 midi controller or if you want to get fancy use an Elgato Stream Deck to flip through the presets, our swap out your snares, blah blah blah, til your heart's content. Oh, and with your DAW you can add whatever compression, EQ, Reverb, Delay you want which absolutely embarrasses ALL of these modules. The only thing that's holding people back is the fact that a laptop or an external sound processor is yet another thing you have to lug around. I just ordered a VAD706 for our church. The very first thing I'm going to do is sell the module and buy a eDRUMin or a MEGADRUM and use it for the sole reason of sending midi data to Superior Drummer.
@@aeiplanner The only problem with the edrummin/computer route is that you generally get a minimum of 7-10ms roundtrip latency while using USB. With Roland you can at least monitor at 2-4ms latency from their modules while simultaneously recording midi in a DAW to utilize with SD3 in post
Ich hatte nach einer Woche ein Choke Problem mit meinem roland ride und schickte es zur Reparatur ein bei roland. Ich warte mittlerweile ein halbes Jahr auf Ersatz da sie ein neues bestellen mussten. Schon lächerlich für roland das sie kein ride auf Lager haben und so lange brauchen um Ersatz zu bekommen.
I don't know why people are commenting that one cymbal sounds good, when the module is what's making the sound. They all sound the same! What I've learned here, especially after reading the comments is that Roland's are insanely overpriced, and Roland doesn't seem to support their customers. Basically, if your ridiculously overpriced cymbal fails or has edge trigger problems, your only option is to buy a new cymbal, and I'd be a fool to do that. If Roland were to offer cymbal repair or to offer a kit to fix them, I would be much more inclined to pay the premium but they don't, so I can't justify buying any of these pads that have crazy prices. This is good that there is such a large aftermarket for pads now. What drummers need to understand is that edrums are different. There's no point trying to make edrums like acoustic drums because that's nearly impossible. I think edrums are better than real drums anyway, so we might as well just accept that. Also, I don't see what the big deal is about positional sensing. People aren't going to notice it.
It's a shame to hear that you've had a bad experience with them. It sounds like you got a bad batch, all of mine output hotter than any other cymbal pads I own. You can see as much in the triggering section - works great but the sensitivity needed lowering. However, I imagine that there could be consistency issues with them being so cheaply made. Surprised I haven't heard of a lot more issues like that but time will tell!

The Roland 18’’ is the closest I’ve played to an acoustic cymbal in the way it moves when playing. Sounds awesome as well.
When I close my eyes when playing it I still get amazed that it is not a metal cymbal. Makes for such an immersive playing experience.
Despite the high price I'm gonna pick one up finally. Just upgraded to a TD27 brain and this video was enough to push me to purchase.

EF Note probably is really really close to ATV as they are mostly the same people that made them i think.

I own the Roland digital ride, i just find the bell's hard texture makes a lot of noise, like hitting straight on plastic
Yeah, it seems to be the loudest part of any of the ones I tested. Feels good but pretty loud, unfortunately.

Yeah, I imagine so since they're very similar and EFNOTE are ex-ATV. I can't imagine their playability would differ too much, though they could have made some tweaks!
would the smaller size lemon cymbals like the 15 inch 3 zone ride be able to have positional sensing on an edrumin? thinking of getting one only to connect the ride so i can use my td17 with a more realistic ride for midi, would there be any problems with connecting both the td 17 and e drum in to work for vsts?
I didn't get reliable results from my 15" ones back when I was testing them. It was inconsistent at best. However, there is now a Lemon/Yamaha PS algorithm included and I haven't tried my 15" ones since this was implemented so it might work better now. Probably best to have a look on Audiofront's forums and see what people's experiences have been. It will be a while before I dive into my eDRUMin again.

The TD-17 module does not HAVE positional sensing. If U want positional sensing U have to upgrade to the TD-27. Don't waste your time trying different cymbals.. That said I would also like to know if all the smaller sized even down to 10" (made by all the different cymbal makers) Jobecki, Triggera, Lemon, ATV, how do all of them work with positional sensing? (Again this must be tested on a TD-27 or Td-50 of course)

I had to turn off edge triggering on my Roland digital cymbal due to it double triggering. Roland wouldn’t fix it, I have 2 of them both do the same thing. Disappointed with the whole situation since these are supposed to be their premium cymbal. Currently looking for other companies to support until Roland gets off their “king” perch and starts picking up their game again.
You should get one of those fuzzy boom microphones to put above you out of frame while you talk, that way you don't have to mess with bringing that mic in and out.

Do you disagree with the idea of nylon tips, and the fraying of wood eventually catching and tearing the mesh heads? I'm terrified to use straight wood tips on the electric kit!
I don't disagree with using nylon tips if you like them. I've personally not had issues with wooden tips, but I make sure to never use the same sticks on an acoustic kit to avoid any fraying or chips on the sticks. I also make sure I've always got rubber rim guards on as an exposed metal rim could fray the sticks too. Some people have issues with stick wear with their wooden tips from the mesh heads but it's only something I've encountered with a particular head.
On the other hand, I've personally had an issue with nylon tips before. I once actually had some nylon tips that had a bit of a point on the end that caught on the mesh head. So checking that the nylon is smooth is a good idea, but otherwise you can use any sticks.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop yes I definitely run finger around the tips to be sure they aren't sharp, or anything like that as well! I only have a electric kit so I don't have that problem, although I definitely wish I did! I actually never thought I'd have a electric drum set, I always thought it was blasphemy!
I use nylon tips exclusively on my Td10. I noticed on my brothers td50 that his cymbals and hi-hats had stick marks from the wood tips he uses. After pointing it out he has switched to nylon for his ekit. The nylon tips dont leave marks...
I've been using wood-tip sticks for years.. but then I like to live on the edge..
All those prices have increased now by around 10%

As mentioned up top (around 0:54), I haven't been able to try out the EFNOTE ride yet so couldn't include it. As far as I'm aware, it's nearly identical to the ATV cymbal so I would expect similar results, though there are probably a couple of design tweaks that might make it a little different.

Thank you! No, the Roland digital ride doesn't work with the TD-17. As I said in the video, it's only the TD-27, 50 and 50X currently.

The CY-16R-T is the biggest analogue ride that Roland now make which is compatible with the TD-17. Or the older CY-15R works with it too.

The problem with almost ALL of these reviews is that guys tend to test things with some module like Roland. That's a shame because just about any sound module is terrible compared to Superior Drummer 3. For the cost of a eDRUMin, M1 Mac Mini a decent touch screen you can have, what I believe, would be the best sound module. I don't know how these companies get away with charging $2500 for modules that are absolute garbage.
Is the sound source a "problem" for the testing of gear if all of the functionality is being shown off with modules or hardware that can utilise them? I use Roland modules for a lot of demos because a lot of people use Roland modules and they have a decent range of trigger options and features such as positional sensing. They're a pretty good standard baseline for response. I also cover other modules that I own when it's appropriate and I tested all of the compatible cymbals using the eDRUMin in this video, so that base is also covered. Other than wishing you could hear the sound of specific ride cymbals from SD3, what exactly is it that you wish would be demonstrated using it that isn't covered by the rest of the testing? (Genuinely curious, not meaning to come across as antagonistic.)

Regarding this specific review, one of the questions that comes up for me personally is: if I never plan to use the Roland module, can I really take advantage of the extra sensing tech that is built into these symbols/pads from within Superior Drummer? If these bells and whistles only comes into play when paired with a Roland module but have no bearing when paired with a competitor's module or VST software, why would I spend the extra cash on the Roland Cymbal? And most guys that are willing to spend this kind of money, probably know a good sounding ride from a bad one.
More importantly however, and this is probably a huge topic but an important on. I just think that when it comes to eDrums, there are two camps out there.
1. the guys that can spend $9K on a top fo the line Roland kit; or
2. the DIYers that would rather build something themselves.
For the guys that can shell out the cash for a Roland - they usually know what they're doing and expect the most realistic sound they can get, unless they're Ben Affleck buying a Christmas gift for JLO. No matter how you spin it, in the last decade, Roland has done next to nothing to improve their sounds. Manipulate? Maybe, but definitely not "improve." They really need to spend $$$ on sound design and hire someone like Paul Mabury from IWTS Drums and have him sample the crap out of different kits and possibly do sound design. They also need to COMPLETELY change their interface. Those silly encoder knobs have to go. Think about it, you can get a full featured digital console with impact resistant 15" screens for not much more than these modules. But the console has virtually unlimited processing potential with FPGA processors built in to process 64+ channels of audio. For the price Roland charges, and the garbage you get in return as far as module goes, they should hang their head in shame. Pearl Mimmic Pro is the closest attempt at a remedy that I have seen yet, but for $2500 it still falls very very short, as that screen is too finicky to work with and sound limitations are obvious and are geared toward Rock/Pop Rock, whereas with SD3 you can get some really nice vintage sounds, or jazz, or whatever you desire really.
The DIYers are the guys that are DIYers for a reason. They want the best bang for their buck and they are likely to spend the time/effort but get the darn thing to do exactly what they want including and ESPECIALLY getting the best possible sounds which almost certainly will lead to Superior Drummer 3 and the expansions.
Like I said, you can spend about the same amount on a Macbook Air M1, or a MacMini M1 which can pretty much handle what you throw at it in terms of processing, load up a bunch of kits onto separate tracks inside Logic/Garage bands, and just flip through those kits using a simple $30 midi controller or if you want to get fancy use an Elgato Stream Deck to flip through the presets, our swap out your snares, blah blah blah, til your heart's content. Oh, and with your DAW you can add whatever compression, EQ, Reverb, Delay you want which absolutely embarrasses ALL of these modules. The only thing that's holding people back is the fact that a laptop or an external sound processor is yet another thing you have to lug around. I just ordered a VAD706 for our church. The very first thing I'm going to do is sell the module and buy a eDRUMin or a MEGADRUM and use it for the sole reason of sending midi data to Superior Drummer.
@@aeiplanner The only problem with the edrummin/computer route is that you generally get a minimum of 7-10ms roundtrip latency while using USB. With Roland you can at least monitor at 2-4ms latency from their modules while simultaneously recording midi in a DAW to utilize with SD3 in post
Ich hatte nach einer Woche ein Choke Problem mit meinem roland ride und schickte es zur Reparatur ein bei roland.
Ich warte mittlerweile ein halbes Jahr auf Ersatz da sie ein neues bestellen mussten.
Schon lächerlich für roland das sie kein ride auf Lager haben und so lange brauchen um Ersatz zu bekommen.
Tut mir leid, das zu hören, das ist lange her! Ich denke, es gibt im Moment einige Lieferprobleme, was schade ist. Ich hoffe, sie bekommen bald einen.
I don't know why people are commenting that one cymbal sounds good, when the module is what's making the sound. They all sound the same! What I've learned here, especially after reading the comments is that Roland's are insanely overpriced, and Roland doesn't seem to support their customers. Basically, if your ridiculously overpriced cymbal fails or has edge trigger problems, your only option is to buy a new cymbal, and I'd be a fool to do that. If Roland were to offer cymbal repair or to offer a kit to fix them, I would be much more inclined to pay the premium but they don't, so I can't justify buying any of these pads that have crazy prices. This is good that there is such a large aftermarket for pads now. What drummers need to understand is that edrums are different. There's no point trying to make edrums like acoustic drums because that's nearly impossible. I think edrums are better than real drums anyway, so we might as well just accept that. Also, I don't see what the big deal is about positional sensing. People aren't going to notice it.
Yamaha has a 17.5 inch, probably be the best
I'm looking forward to trying one when they're available individually if the price is right!
GEWA looks like a toy for kids
The Lemon e cymbals are garbage. Bought a set last year and after not much use they are sending weak signals. Poor quality.
It's a shame to hear that you've had a bad experience with them. It sounds like you got a bad batch, all of mine output hotter than any other cymbal pads I own. You can see as much in the triggering section - works great but the sensitivity needed lowering. However, I imagine that there could be consistency issues with them being so cheaply made. Surprised I haven't heard of a lot more issues like that but time will tell!
I have several Lemon cymbals, all sizes. They work great on my Mimic pro! No complaints here.
