“You won’t get anywhere drawing like this” I felt that one. I used to draw all the time in school and one day my English teacher came by and sat down in front of me and asked me what I wanted to do one day? I told her I wanted to draw manga and do animation. After giving me a concerned look she said what college corse did I want to take? I said concept art or illustration. She adjusted in her seat and said “Art will never get you anywhere in life. I suggest you take a general studies course in college so that way you’ll be able to apply anywhere. If you get a degree in art no one will hire you because art is a failed degree that is unreliable and unrealistic. You should give it up now and focus on something that will be stable.” After that she made me not want to draw anymore she made me lose hope in what I loved so when I did go to college and enroll in graphic design there was no joy because that statement ran through my head so many times. When I began my course in Fundamentals of Art 1 my teacher told me my anime style was something companies hated and that I need to switch my style. Today, I got back into drawing anime and love what I do! I’m still trying to quit my job and do something art related but I live in Virginia so there really aren’t too many jobs for art. I would love to start RUclips and become a free lance artist and begin my own manga/graphic novel someday. I am currently working on a concept book for my story and hope that this will give me the push I need. My dream is to self publish my dream story and open my own store and possibly maybe start my own RUclips channel.

I lived in Virginia, I have an animation degree and felt the same as you. There’s nothing in Virginia and felt hopeless. My dream is to quit my job and be a successful Etsy seller like katnipp. Don’t give up!

It’s never too late to start!! Art has always been something I loved but growing up everyone told me I’d be a starving artist, and convinced me it was silly to pay for an art degree. Seeing artists succeed on instagram and Etsy inspires me that it’s not unrealistic. It’s a shame that people discourage young adults like they did to us. I’d never say something like that to a kid, no matter what their dream was. Your graphic novel is gonna kick ass!! 💖💕

Its definitely possible. Get some work out there, see if you can get a manga published. either online or physically. If it gets popular, great, but if not, learn from your errors and keep pushing. The great thing about the world today, is that you dont have to be japanese to shoot off a great manga. Webtoons are gaining prominence now, and alot of korean manwha's are getting anime. If your a digital artist, look into clip studio paint. Great photoshop alternative if you dont have it. Once you get a flow going try making a tutorial on how to draw manga. Or make nice poster designs for etsy. Anime and manga is a big market now, just have to grow your brand enough so people would be willing to put money on you. Go to conventions and ask if you can advertise your work there. Alot of great artists do that, and often sell their work successfully.

I've been watching all your videos these last 2 days, I really appreciate how elaborate you are with the process without sugar-coating it in a bad way. I'm 26 and would like to pursue into an art-related field, however I never really laid the groundwork for myself in my earlier 20s and feel like I may have missed out on some of my best years (also some of the better years for internet marketing) But watching your video has lit up a bit of a dusty spark in me. Thank you for making these! I would love to see the process of you filming these videos. You are so well equipped and organized. I wish I was more like you!

I’m 28 and I just started pursuing my art seriously, along with my travel dreams too! Age is important in some aspects, but I will say this. It’s never too late until you’re dead. Seriously Van Gogh didn’t start painting until his late twenties. He did all kinds of other careers first!

Oh gosh, I didn't see this specific notification!! IDK if it's cause I'm seeing half my friends succeeding and I'm kinda sticking back, but BOOOI am I envious of people making it! Do you draw often? What's your preferred medium!?

    • @spaceylayce3320
      @spaceylayce3320 6 лет назад +1

Before, I used to work in ink and watercolor, but this year I transitioned to digital art, and I am liking it for making comics! How about you? What do you like to use? And I totally understand about seeing friends, or people even younger than you doing amazing things, but my therapist told me that everyone has their own circumstances. She advised me to make smaller goals that help toward my bigger goals, so that's what I'm doing now.

Your story sounds so similar to mine, especially the college years lol. I spent my whole childhood up until graduation doing creative stuff and then when I got to college it just seemed like work suddenly and I ended up partying way too much, getting super depressed, and lost my focus and direction for a while. I transferred in the middle of my junior year and then ever since then life has been throwing crabapples at me consistently. I’m trying to get my life together now, and came across your videos which have been so motivating and inspiring to me. You are a beautiful soul, thank you so much for sharing yourself with us ✨💖✨

Hello Catherine, I’m finding these videos in the start of your journey really helpful for where I am currently as a digital and traditional illustrator. I am starting my own brand and business foundations I would say. I’ve dabbled a little in RUclips but I still have a way to go. I’m trying to research where to get my illustrations made onto pins and mugs etc currently and I am currently working on my Etsy shop. It seems so much to juggle as a stay at home mum of two girls, but I hope to get there soon 😊

Thanks for sharing your story :) I got my degree in Illustration (minor in Digital Media), and started off contracting for a publishing company, illustrating books. They liked working with me and asked if I knew InDesign and could I do any graphic layout work. I said I knew it (which was a little bit of a stretch) and started doing graphic design, and have been teaching myself ever since. I got laid off when the company ran into financial trouble and fell into a two year slump. I went back to school to do a little professional development. I've recently quit my full time retail job in search of something better. I've always found personal storytelling to be really motivating to me, so I appreciate hearing about your path to this career.

i also had an adviser in uni who told me not to take art classes and discouraged me, kind of like how yours told you you wouldn't get anywhere with your art. now i'm teaching ESL in Korea and studying graphic design on the side. i've learned not to listen to others tell me what i can and cannot do, and to focus on knowing myself and my abilities. you didn't listen to your advisor either, and look how far you've come!!

I've only just found your youtube and I'm soo glad I did. Your story following up to uni I can really relate to, except for me it was less anime and more fashion, style, illustration, website, collage and digital art based. I'm at Uni and hope to go freelance after I graduate this year. You and your videos have been already very inspiring and interesting to watch. :) You really remind me of Gemma Shiel who is the founder of the British brand 'Lazy Oaf', I think if you both collaborated that would be so cool. How are you me? 😂😂
I grew up with Pixel Dolls/Neopets - moved on to Otaka boards, then DeviantArt - got told that I couldn’t support myself as an artist, went and studied Journalism which I knew I wouldn’t do as a career one year into my degree (I did finish it anyway) and after years of stuffing around have finally found myself as an illustration artist and accessories maker!

When I was in high school my art teacher said we weren't allowed to do anything in an anime style because the SQA just refuses to mark it because everyone was doing that style at one point and they wanted people to have more variety and be more traditional. Kind of made me sad that I was limited to what style I could do, but I was able to use anime styles in my college graded unit and because I showed that it was becoming a trend they encouraged it and said that it's good to do research into what's popular and growing. It seems to be pretty common for schools to reject the anime/manga art style though.

8:53 - The comment from that tutor is pretty common. Once you get to Degree Level, they are more easy going but more pretentious as well. I felt what you said because 4 weeks away from completing my 3rd year in Fine Art and Illustration, we had a woman come in from the London Illustration something or other, to present to. I was working on a book at the time with my tutor and we came up with an idea together that I use simply line and introduce 1 colour as a theme. After she looked at my work and asked what direction I wanted to go in after graduation, I said along the lines of book design or freelance for the media. It only took her a few words and a dirty look to say my idea was poor and I would never make it as an illustrator - my grades didn't say that however - but my tutor who was brown nosing this woman point blank agreed with HER! It knocked my confidence for years after that, since 2007 to be exact. Its only over the past few years I realise that I do have some sort of talent...I maybe should have gone for the Graphic Design degree in the end, but all disciplines compliment each other in a creative sense. I have just found your channel and its making me think how I should try and put a few products out and see what response I get. Thank you for making these videos and giving us an insight into your life and business. They are certainly helping me get a bit of clarity at the moment :)

Im so sorry you had a similar experience, it totally sucks doesnt it, but im here to tell you it totally is possible I totally fluffed up my degree after that because I became so deflated with my work, they should encourage growth and creativity, not dampen it! These people should not be in teaching positions!

Hi Catherine, I have recently found your channel and LOVE your videos. You have a great personality and are super knowledgable. I'm wondering, if you haven't already, if you could do a video about the "official" stuff of setting up a business. Are you a limited company or a sole trader? When should a freelancer set up as this, what if you've been selling "unofficially" here and there with no steady stream of income from it but want to make it more so. Also stuff to do with taxes! Does that make sense? I'm in the UK myself so any tips you can give would be absolutely fantastic!
I've subbed and also followed you on Insta for more great content, keep up the good work!
