  • Camper van conversion - One of my driveshafts had a split carrier bearing, so decided the whole lot needed a change out 😂😁
    Follow what I do with a pinch of salt! it may not be the correct way, but at least I gave it a go 👌🏻😁

    Suspecting a driveshaft on my T6 as a potential cause of a vibration between 65-70mph when under power. Great video for instilling a bit of confidence!

    Hello, I've replaced my stub shaft. and like yours my brass type olive has broken. When you fitted your new stub shaft did you push the c ring that is tight up on the olive on removal back into the same place on the new one or into the groove at the end 30mm before the end of the splines inner gearbox end. thanks for any feed back

    Fitted mine today, drive shaft was easy, the ballache was getting the lower ball joint on and off, pain in the arse.

      Getting old now Finlay 🤣 99% sure it was 30mm. It’s recommended to put a new one on when changing the drive shafts 👍🏻

    Hi Toby can you please tell me if you remove the lower ball joint ?can't quote see on video . I've just done the tie rod ends so I know they can be a pain without tool .cheers graham

    You made it look easy getting that stub axle in , how did you get it in

      😂 just use a pry bar and leaver it on the front edge just enough to compress the spring and get the bolt in.

      Hi that’s a long H6 socket. You can get them from Amazon or Screwfix

    Good camera angles and explanations, I need to do my 05 1.9 TDI, I have it booked in but now I've seen your vid I'm thinking of doing it myself. Can you tell me what special tools are required please, i have a 1/4 drive impact driver with a 1/2 adapter if that powerful enough? Did you change inner stub shaft on both sides?

      Nothing special really. Only thing you will need for changing stubby shaft is the long Allen key socket to reach.

    Great video really good explanation of how it's done- some other vids out there telling me to make special tools to loosen the drive shaft from tbe hub! Can you let me know how long it took? Am trying to judge if I should give it a go! Thanks

      Hi Sam thanks 😊 usually should be about half hour to an hour, but you never know! I was lucky as most components came away easily. Definitely give it a go 👍🏻

    I'm so sorry for another question, but your video is the best I have found for this issue. Now I've done the right side, I'm thinking about doing the left side, after watching your vid yet another time I noticed you didn't change an inner stub shaft on the left side, so, is there one and would potentially need replacing?     How did you separate the control arm ball joint? I've tried bashing, levering and pullers and it won't budge. Bought an M14 spline bit to remove the whole thing but it doesn't go in, going to try cleaning rust out to see if that helps, my van isn't that rusty as I had it for most of it's life in Australia until 2021. I'm on my 2nd attempt at doing the job now

      Just used a long pry bar. If it’s solid bud, just get a separator and that will crack it off in no time

      @@AXISUK yep tried 2 different types and heat, managed to get the M14 spline bolts off in the end, the actual job is a half hour job, tops, Spent hours trying to separate though. Now I think I may have to do the other side as there's still a slight knocking. Cheers mate

      @@AXISUK OK, I do have both my wheels off, I have removed both front shocks and noticed one of the boots is split, I might have to put one of the shocks back on and reassemble, new shocks not coming till Tuesday.

      @@lozroberts632 I would just put a flat head screw driver in the vent of the disk and lock it up against the brake caliper. Should stop it spinning when undoing them.

    Hi, what was causing the clunk when wheel was off the ground? The splines were ok, the bearing was knackered but would the bearing cause that clunk when you moved the wheels? Thanks 🤙

      It only takes a fraction of wear on the splines to cause a slight knock, plus a little wear on the bearings all adds up.

    That play and clicking noise with the wheel raised comes from the diff, id have thought. Splines looked still dead good...

      Yeah sometimes the slightest wear on the splines can amplify the noise

      @@DGM553 not sure to be honest. Normally the noise is from play from a worn shaft.

      @@DGM553 to diagnose you could do as shown in the Video with the wheel raised, then take off the wheel, the drive shaft, and then give the stub axle a twist, to see if you can replicate the noises, without the influence of the driveshaft splines. It isn't an exact science, though...

    Sorry, just got one more question for you, I only have play in the driver's side so I think that may be where my noise is coming from. I'm going to do that one first and see if it solves the issue, is there a stubby shaft on that side aswel?

      From memory, there is only one stubby and that’s the drives side 👍🏻

      Wow they are cheap, and the driveshafts too! I notice the stub is a bit different. The driveshaft end on mine has a separation in the cog for a circlip@@AXISUK

    Brilliant mate. I’m gonna attempt the driver on and stub. Been to several garages was told wishbone and mount. Changed front mount today nothing wrong with the old and wishbones ok. Diagnosed this issue myself quite embarrassing really considering I’d took it to so called Vag specialists 🫣🙄 Just ordered from j&rcvjoints tonight. Only concern I have is topping that gear box oil back up. I didn’t expect that much to be lost 😅

      Thanks. When doing a little research after mine soaked me, it turns out that if the van is level then the correct level of oil shouldn’t come out when removing the spline. Definitely worth checking, but looked like mine was over filled.
