But my generation likes anime and we often buy Japanese cars. I'm glad the world can move on.
I would see Colbert do it, not that I know him but he seems to care for all members of his staff and... And well he is quite serious and respectfull and I guess most relevant compasionate. But well I don't know them and sure Fallon and Cordon are comasionate to but I don't really watch them as I definitely prefer Conan and Colbert over them but loose of the fact whether they would want to do this or would do this for a staff combined with making content. As far as I see they are more likely to steer away from it as they try to be really pc and family friendly,... just pleasure everyone. And if you do that you often end up with a less funny show then it could be, anyway that's what I think.
@Barry Lab I am sure ottomans attacked Armenians for no reason and just for fun :) Research before you put these stuff into video Facts: Armenians betrayed Ottoman Empire and attacked together with Russia to Ottoman Empire land. So Sultan also sent a force, there was a battle and both sides lost soldiers, not just Armenians. Research before you post.

After 1908 sultan didn't have executive powers and couldn't send any forces.
Never thought I would be affected by this video, but after watching all of Conan's remotes and getting to know Sona more through the internet, it saddened me to see Sona upset. That's what I love about Conan, the connection he has with his staff is truly special. This isn't me hating on other talk show hosts, because I love Fallon and his games, but Conan just offers that little bit more.

@ClassiCore It sounds like you're getting your information on America through internet news sites. The average American wants nothing to do with war, and police brutality is pretty rare. Even in the south real racism is rare, regardless of the stereotypes.
darth salad police brutality and racism is not rare. However, I will agree most Americans are not war hungry. Most Americans don’t want any part of the wars they have been fighting for the past 20 years.
@@WETTV96 If you compare police brutality to countries like China, it is quite rare, although that's a pretty unfair comparison since they've got it pretty fucked over there. Also most racism in America boils down to cultural mistrust, not Hitler-approved "I'm better than you because my race has two more IQ points on average" racism.
I can relate to Sona's story about her grandfather. My grandfather was a Holocaust survivor who also recorded his story on cassette and we found it years later. The stories are so similar. A very tough listen.
after this segment, im now officially sure that this is conans next career move, a travelogue ala conan. That would be amazing television. Talk shows run its course, next contract, this.
Conan is such a great guy. i just love how he makes this not at all about himself. He's just listening here. Even the camera shots mostly show sona in the center. Conan is just standing by in support.
@UC9FfZA7pmlOoFj2sJO-ZaMQ you're an idiot. No one alive right now was around for most those colonizations. No survivors ever got to record and document their experiences. @@vivekjk6729 Exactly. Every so called "super power" that has ever existed has committed genocide in one way or another... I watch this and I tear up. I read the comments and the tears flow. In a world where comment sections so often are used to berate, insult, and dehumanize people we disagree with, the opportunity to read such heartfelt and meaningful insights from people gives me a touch of hope.
Conan is way too intelligent and emotionally profound to be doing Lindsay Lohan and Larry King jokes for the rest of his career. His recent remotes and travel segments show the kind of man he seems to be at heart. I hope we see more of this in the years to come.
I've thought this for ages, does he not find it mind-numbing to have (mostly) boring actors and celebrities come on and tell vaguely funny stories just so they can plug their show/movie. He's capable of making some really great content.

Conan and Sona have been through a very tough part of his career together. I swear they're like siblings. Taking her to Armenia and then having this moment at the memorial was really emotional.
+RedVIII I feel like that last jab that sona gave conan at the end. "You could come too. I guess" Definitely a brother and sister type of line. You know they love each other but just never want to admit it.
When I see pictures of my own people during the Vietnam War, the trembling and dread fills quickly. The effects transcend generations. I can only imagine how Sona felt.
+justrunaways I am the first American-born in my Vietnamese family. We live in Garden Grove, the biggest non-native Vietnamese population, thanks to the war. It doesn't really matter who won or who was right. You know how your race's crying sounds like, or what their fearful face looks like; it's distinct and painful. Like Sona, you don't have to be affected by or be alive when something like the Armenian genocide happens.

+Rachel Lam It's still illegal to even mention the Ottoman genocide in Turkey, which is one of the reasons, albeit a minor one, why Turkey has been barred from entry into the European Union (EU). A historical fact as well (I may as well while I'm at it)- prior to the Armenian genocide, the word 'genocide' didn't even exist, the U.S Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Henry Morgenthau Sr., quite eloquently described the genocide as 'race murder' in his cables to Washington. The word 'genocide' wasn't invented, or coined, until 1943/44 (by Rafael Lemkin).
Let's pay our respect to the people who experienced the tragedy of war it must be extremely painful to lose everyone you know and love at such a young age it's touching

This was done so beautifully and sensitively. I am very appreciative of learning more about the Armenian culture via Sona (and Team Coco). I went to school with an awesome Armenian-American woman and was always so impressed by her and how much she valued family and keeping their culture alive. I got chills watching this and thought of her family too. Thank you for putting a spotlight on this horrific time in history, while still managing to make us smile when watching the next generation laugh and play in the once war-torn streets.
So there's a genocide museum on site at the memorial grounds that isn't mentioned. It was an overwhelming experience to visit. The genocide museum historians do a remarkable job retelling the story. Being a granddaughter of Genocide survivors, and visiting this place was an inexplicably moving experience. I was sickened and overcome with grief and sadness that I cannot to this day communicate. Growing up as an Armenian, this is something we all cary with us all the time, but when you set foot on this memorial site it's like being transported back to that time for a moment. We all need to visit this memorial. It is a rite of passage and an honoring of our people. Children of the diaspora returning to Armenia and actually setting foot on the soil, bringing our spirits back home and bringing the spirits of our slain with us to find some peace in that eternal flame of remembrance. Tsitsenakaberd (swallow's fortress).
I am Korean. And I am really feeling compassion for tragedy of Armenia. Because we, korean also experienced the painful genocide in 20centuries when Japanese empire colonized us. I do not hate all the japanese, but I want them to admit their precedent sins and apologize korean victim's family. I wish in the future, there will be no tragedy in korea and also Armenia
+양현모 what the japanese did - no matter how horrible it was - wasn't genocide though. But I agree that japan needs to at least apologise and admit to what they did do. Germany did the same because of the 2nd world war - it's the right thing to do
Nabiya Ri that’s not true it was absolutely genocide. Many of the perpetrators who established sex slavery in Korea reasoned it as they were making them “genetically better”. They killed so many people, my grandfather would see Japanese shoot his friends and neighbors if they would be disobedient. Not just Korea but China with rape of Nanking and unit 731 that experimented and murdered over 10,000 civilians. I’ve also heard the Philippines and many southeast Asian countries who were victim to sex slavery and genocide.
Japan had, several times, and paid. Korea insisted that the Japanese pay the government, not the women directly, but they never gave it to the women and instead kept it

The moment Sona started tearing up made me tear up as well. I thought Conan would never attempt to get serious but here he is. Such a great host indeed.
Hey man , not everything has to be fun and games. Respect for those who know when to be serious because it's a serious matter. Like genocide , and stuff..
it was good to see this. Iv listen to conans podcasts and they are ripping off each other and Conan is usually looking for a way to make anything a joke, but here it actually is what it is. Colleagues and friends.
Conan, I love how serious you were in this video and I love how your very tiny well places bits of comedy helped ease Sona's grief. This video was absolutely tasteful. Thank you!
As a Turk, I really didn't know that the later generations are still that emotional about the genocide. I would like to say that I feel sorry from the bottom of my heart for the pain you went through and are still going through. Love you all!
I love the fact that they go on and on at each other, but deep down, they actually care a lot about one another and a real friendship is truly beautiful and lovely to see.
This is what separates Conan from the rest of the comedian hosts on TV. That's not to say that hosts don't take time to comment or acknowledge certain issues, because they do and they all share that knowledge of 'when the time calls for it' in terms of seriousness. But I have yet to see another host interact with their staff in this way, and take the time and learn about the culture behind one of their staff members, and go so far as to fly out of the country with them, to educate an audience, bridge generational gaps, and spread awareness. Conan's team does that constantly. My favorite Conan moments aren't even his interviews...they're when he has animals on his show, when he visits his staff, when he riffs with Jordan, an when he goes out of his way to do stuff like THIS. I think he deserves a lot more attention than he gets, honestly.
Sons of an Armenian family who lives close by and are good friends mine have told me their family stories several times about this tragedy and the aftermath. Even many years after the genocide the father was beaten almost to death because he was not a muslim and one of the boys, who was 8 at the time, was forced to watch or he would get a beating too. It's one of the many stories before they fled the country. What amazes me the most is how their family is still full of love, after listening to all those stories I would expect them to be cold hearted and filled with hatred. I know one family doesn't portray an entire society but their love is enough to create an Armenian soft spot in me.
My respect for Conan has gone up dramatically. Most TV hosts would ignore controversial topics like this, but Conan did it anyways. Love from Armenia, Աստված ձեզ հետ ըլա.
I didn't even know. Crazy, I wouldn't have figured that Conan, of all the shows, would clue me in on this one and send me on a quick dive through wikipedia to learn more about all of this. But here we are. Thanks folks, I learned a lot today.
Right, the Neo-Turks had nothing to do with it. They only wanted an ethnically pure Turkish state, comprising of muslim Turks, that's all. That's why they massacred Pontic Greeks, Syrians and Yazidis as well, because they were helping the Russians. Also that is why nowadays, about 150k Muslims of turkish origin live in northern Greece, whereas the Greeks in Turkey are below 6k, because the Turkish state is so kind towards ethnic minorities and they flourish. That's why the Turks elected Erdogan, to have a leader who supports their totally non-nationalistic extremist views. It's not like such open-minded people would reject their nation's historical facts. *sarcasm*
Kudos to you for assuming I'm white, even though you can't possibly know that. Also, Turks are white too strictly speaking since they are not of the black or yellow race. There are also syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and places like Greece, Italy and Germany, your point? Turkey simply wants to extend its territory and extinguish the kurdish strongholds in northern Syria. Countries who suffered a genocide from the Turks are not in any way responsible for what the British and western Europeans did in America, Africa or Australia because at that time they were ENSLAVED by the Turks themselves. In fact the first country which recognised the Greek revolution against the Ottomans when all of Europe condemned it, was the nation of Haiti. Stop bringing the race card to everything and don't use a moral scale. What the Europeans did shouldn't justify any behaviour from other peoples.
Go read the manifesto of Armenia's first Prime minister Hovhannes Kajazuni,he was also a member of Dashnak party who fought against Ottoman Empire and massacred Ottoman civillians along the invading Russian army. Read it to see what he has to say about what happened. What happened is not genocide,it's simply war. Armenian Revolutionary Federation massacred Ottoman citizens and Ottoman Army massacred Armenians. Simple as that. It's usual Armenian bullshit, they started a fight, lost it hard and now they are crying their mascaras out claiming it was a genocide. Hilarious.
Problem was, it wasn't based on the facts. For example, 1.5 million Armenians could not have been killed, because that was the total pre-war population, according to what everyone agreed upon at the time. U.S. Senate Resolution, Nov. 10, 1919: *1,293,000* Armenians alive and accounted for. Perform the subtraction. Most importantly, there is *no evidence* for an "Armenian genocide. On the other hand, there is *plenty* of reliable evidence that it was the Armenians who had conducted the *factual extermination campaign,* when they did away with *529,000* Turks, Muslims, and Jews. (See the 1919 report of two investigating Americans, Niles and Sutherland: louisville.edu/a-s/history/turks/Niles_and_Sutherland.pdf) Matias Page would have done well to crack open some *objective* works instead of exposing his ignorance, and deep prejudice. .
It should be known more but it is not the most untold. I think the Cambodian genocide and the invasion of Timor Leste is lesser known and will probably stay the same way for decades to come.
@@YinYangLogo First of all, unless you are Turkish or Armenian, it is indecent to ostracize Turkish people for recognizing its role in these events. Don't be dicks to Turkish people or you will be called out on it for being a country bumpkin. Here's my stance. Armenia had invaded the Ottoman Empire. So, the hypothesis that the Ottoman Empire tried to 'wipe out' Armenians from the face of the Earth could be debunked just by saying the Ottomans were defending their territory.
I feel so sorry for the Armenians and every country that has experienced genocide. My deepest sympathy to all that have been affected. May God give you the comfort and peace that you seek and may the soul of your loved one rest in peace.

Denying the term genocide that's all, because 500,000 Muslims were also killed by people like the Russian supported armenian rebels. That's why you will get a very defensive stance from modern day turks because they lost millions fighting to regain their country, including civilians too. World War 1 was a dark turn in history. Plus it was generals of the Ottoman Empire that committed them from 1915 to 1921 whereas the Turkish republic was founded in 1923 where they trialed some of the generals responsible for the ethnic cleansing.

@@hassanabdulahi4705 Ethnicity is a social construction, it is a concept not supported by science... Even the international concept of genocide applies for religion which is an ideology. Dirty war was the original name of those who claimed it was a war (the responsables of the genocide) it wasn't a war, they killed whoever they wanted to kill (company owners, social workes, unionized people, witnesses, political rivals within the army, even they asked for ransoms for people's sons and daughters and they would end up killing the person who paid the random) all done in concentration camps, and got rid of the bodies by dropping them from planes in the ocean, they took the babies of the pregnant women who would die in captivity and give them to wealthy families; they used exactly the dehumanization campaing all genociders use, they used to claim there were argentinians who weren't argentinians, people who posed a threat to our way of life and our culture, that the enemy was within our society and it could be anybody we knew, so if somebody would disappear then it was justified (so they had an excuse for killing anybody they wanted) They even proudly claimed their methods were the same used by the nazis. They basically wanted to construct a new nation, based on their 'values' of what was right. A morality of a Western Catholic Culture, as they used to call it.
The type of police brutality that's in the news (where the police shoot an unarmed black guy reaching for his drivers license) is rare anyways.
Also most racism in America boils down to cultural mistrust, not Hitler-approved "I'm better than you because my race has two more IQ points on average" racism.

Time and a place for everything. Touching and somber message, with a harmless chuckler at the end. Loved this.
Thanks Sona and Conan team for share this!

Hilarious.
The way this was handled is simply brilliant. Great little tribute.
(See the 1919 report of two investigating Americans, Niles and Sutherland: louisville.edu/a-s/history/turks/Niles_and_Sutherland.pdf)
Matias Page would have done well to crack open some *objective* works instead of exposing his ignorance, and deep prejudice.

@@JN-wr9he What the Armenians did? Or what the Azerbaijan leaders did to their own people in Khojaly? You don’t even know your own history, kid.
To put this out there...he genuinely respects and cares for her, and she has broadened his perspectives and enriched his life. It is really nice to see.
Shoutout to Conan for acknowledging what even our own president wont.... due to Turkey being part of NATO
+Julio Rodriguez OK then why is Germany part of the NATO, the Nazis committed a genocide as well, you see, people are different now, ottomans and Nazis don't exist anymore and you need to forget about them to move on, they got what they deserved (destruction)
.
+Top10Eagle The difference is, the Turkish government denies that it was a genocide, but the Germans admit it.
Herr Jemine you said it 'Government', today's government is Turkish not an Ottoman Monarchy anymore, they lost the war and they got what they deserved, we shouldn't bear their shameful actions on our back, thats my view. Peace
+Top10Eagle That's not what he's saying. He's saying the American president won't officially* acknowledge the Armenian genocide as a genocide to appease fellow NATO member Turkey who don't acknowledge it either.
Not that Turkey shouldn't be allowed to join NATO. Germany doesn't deny the holocaust nor does any other country.
Thank you conan for your kindness. Sona I will pray and I'm so sorry about all of the happenings. God bless both of you. ❤❤❤
My parents went through the same, though in Cambodia. My condolences are with you guys.
This is Conan and Sona at their best. Sona was clearly shaken and Conan showed tremendous respect and heart.
I'm so sorry to the people of Armenia. I have so much respect for Conan and this is so good of him
I can’t imagine how terrible it must’ve been for the Armenian people, may God keep blessing everyone that has lost some siblings! Respect for Armenia. Greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷 🙌
You guys are the best late night show.
more like the best talk show
It's such an outrage that Turkey, to this day, continues to deny the very fact that the Armenian Genocide even took place. Very fine thing to show this on this channel.
@@hotpotato3311 "While Turkey not accepting this genocide is understandable (I mean who would confess they did a genocide)"
Um, Germany has a giant monument to its own guilt right in its capital city. It teaches children about the horrifying things that happened there in WW2. It is not "understandable" to simply deny something that horrific, that means so much to a next-door neighbour.
That's a weird way to rationalise Turkey's behaviour. Almost as if Armenia is more in the wrong than Turkey, which displaced or killed a _million and a half_ Armenians. There are so many prominent Turks and Turkish immigrants who still, to this day, deny that the Armenian genocide happened - you hand them excuses with your slippery argument.
@@hotpotato3311 I didn't expect you to answer honestly, given your initial post, so we can go our separate ways. You can continue making excuses for a genocide and I can continue doing the opposite.
@@Swolwe235 It's extremely slippery, and you're being slippery right now.
Every country in the west has recognised the reality of the Armenian genocide, Germany and America at the forefront. ...Turkey refuses to do so.
While it continues to do so, Armenians will continue to mistrust and resent Turkey for its cowardice and refusal to take responsibility. That could be solved if Turkey would just man up, but it can't.
@@hotpotato3311 I don't understand what it is that's 'confusing' about Armenia's take on the issue. They would like the perpetrators of a genocide to admit to it - just like Germany admitted to the holocaust.
Much respect to Conan for bringing this up and educating his viewers about this painful past for Armenians.
It wasn't a genocide. It was a war.
+Özgür AKPINAR eshol
@@ozgurakpinar_gr Sure, keep telling yourself that. Were you there? I highly doubt it!
My grandparents and great-grandparents suffered a lot during the I and II world wars in Hungary. When Sona described the story of her grandfather my tears came out straight. It must have absolutely horrifying. Nevertheless I'm very happy that he survived the genocide.
That's the magic of Conan. He isn't afraid to take the real truth everyone pretends not to see, and even in such a video, where humor would be considered as an offense, he made us laugh. People like that are priceless.
The empathy Conan showed by making this a segment cannot be underestimated. Thx Coco & Team Coco
Sona has the same kind of story i have about my grandparents if it wasnt for a turkish family taking in my grandfather and turkish police officer smuggling my grandmother and her brother out i wouldnt be here today and to see conan be serious means a lot
It says a lot; an entire people are not inhuman - governments are. There are always people who will refuse to stand with evil even if everybody around them is.
@@MayukhNair you could hardly find an armenian who’d risked their life to protect a turk or an azeri

Thank you Conan for introducing some serious history! Much needed.
You got the power to make ppl aware of this tragedy!!!
Sona is such a strong and sweet person. Thank you Conan for including this powerful tribute in your show.
Thank you for shedding more light on Armenian Genocide.
What I love about Conan is that he can be a class act when the situation calls for it.
My grandmother's best friend was an Armenian woman who suffered the genocide, sadly we here too suffered one in the 70s and 80s; each time one of these stories is ignored and forgotten, we make one more step towards the path of repeating history and its most catastrophic consequences. April 24th, never forget!
Which genocide are you referring to in the 70s and 80s?
@@hassanabdulahi4705 Argentinian genocide, part of the US backed anti-communist regimes in the 70's and 80's
@@victorfergn oh yeah the dirty war I can see why you said it’s a genocide, but it’s more of a political purge and thanks for responding on a 2 year old comment.
Backed by international corporations too, they implemented a laissez-faire economy and took a lot of debt (they needed to get rid of a sector of the population to do it so)
Solidarity from a Jew. To quote the great MLK JR, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”
Remember the Holodomor.
@Infedius 1.5 is a made-up number. genocidal intent of ottomans is a made-up claim. armenians being innocent victims is a made-up image. they were committing ethnic cleansing against Turks in 1915, just like they did against Azeris in the 90-s yet keep denying it.
Since her first appearance I have always loved Sona. She seems like a person who is unapologetically herself. All the best Sona. Thanks for keeping Co on his toes.
This was such a great and important segment Conan. Thanks for doing this.
I've loved and have been watching Conan since 1998, but his visit to the Genocide Memorial in Armenia (as well as other significant world sites he's visited since) cemented his status as the greatest personality in all media, in my opinion. As an Armenian whose grandparents also became orphans because of the Genocide, this clip obviously resonates on a profoundly personal level. A tremendous Thank You to Conan, Sona, and TBS for doing this.
