I live in upstate NY but I was out visiting my brother in LA back in January. I brought my Fujifilm x100F and I took some of my favorite photos I've ever taken at that skate park and at Venice Beach. It makes me want to move out there so bad. I absolutely love these!!! Great job man.
Cool photos! I use my M for photographing skateboarding often in New York. I need to get out to Venice Beach soon! I mostly use a TTArtisan 11mm fisheye, but I do use my 28mm Elmarit and 50mm Summicron often. The 50mm wide open is so beautiful for skating.
The photography community at times have pigeon holed the M series to just street photography and portraits. When I see a photographer use a M and its design for action, sports, landscape, and other genres that is something to appreciate. Back to the core rule it’s the photographer that makes the image, the camera is the tool. 😊
Absolutely. A camera is anything a photographer wants it to be. Zone focusing and street photography is a very small percentage of what this camera and system can do.
Yeah, fast shooting with an M is the most fun and challenging way to shoot with it. Some of my favorite shots were the most fun to capture as I was really on the edge of catching the moment on my M3
Dude, love seeing you challenge yourself to shoot in a different way and learn something from it. Photos look amazing! And you’re right, the Leica look is wide open. That’s why Karbe says he designs the lenses to be shot wide open!
hey Dave this is not just the Leica look, these are the most beautiful pictures i've ever seen captured on a Leica! Holy shit man, you god me with the sunset shots! Thanks for this video
For sure man. I figured out something similar with my Q2 as it relates to the “look”. The 28mm at 1.7 is the look. You’ve touched on it before but at say 5.6 and the right grade any camera can look like a Leica but the lenses are designed with wide open in mind, I think, and that’s where they separate themselves. Couple sick shots you got for sure 👍
These Photos are absolutely great! I just got an M11 after years of shooting Sony. It’s really a complete different experience and I enjoy it. But I am/was afraid of not being able to shoot the photos I want to achieve. Your Photos really encourage me to practice like hell. Great work!
Thank you! I did the same thing… Sony to M. Still shoot Sony for some stuff, mostly commercial work and video. The more I shoot M the better and better I get at it!
I'm still skating at 43 but usually just means rollering around in the park which has really helped with my mental health. I did get a chance to shoot at that park, loved it. I didn't have my Leica at the time but I'm starting to shoot all the skatingboarding pictures with my Leica.
Yas Dave, good for you challenging yourself, the Photos are excellent! You have a twinkle in your eye that says you had fun. Happy to see a fellow photographer out taking proper photos and not mainly talking about gear. Keep it up!
Great shots Dave. Here's the truth...beauty is rare. All the great things in life take time and sacrifice. Things that are easy or convenient are not special. If you work on something that's challenging, hard, that takes time your art will stand out from the masses who don't have the talent or (more importantly) the fortitude to be great. The more challenging the skill or project, the better your Art will be for it.
I went there recently with my M11/50mm. Fun to try and prefocus and anticipate, but tough. Not sure I got any keepers but I was only there for 30 minutes and my focal length was pretty tight. Still fun. I live close so I return here from time to time. Old skater myself. I think I see the great Andy Anderson in your shots.
Wonderful footage and photos. I HAVE in the past traipsed around, shooting at 0.95 and 1.4 with some success, but never at a skate park. Kudos! It’s very inspiring.
Love your work. I just got the TTArtisan 11mm fisheye to take on our cruise. Loved shooting with that lens on the ship as it gave a different perspective. Highly recommend that lens
Great video - really phenomenal photos. When I first got into photography I used to shoot wide open all the time - Some of those photos are some of the best. Your approach was really cool (constrain yourself to the lens being wide open) and force yourself to work around that. Your results were spectacular.
@@davidherring No problem. Good channel by the way. Lack of hyperbole and a nagging sensation that someone is just trying to flog me stuff! Out of interest did you do single shot each time or 'cheat' with continuous shooting?
@mikehenley3114 for this shoot I did about half and half. Before the light got low, I was single shooting. But as the light got lower I was shooting in continuous to increase the chances I got the shot.
Honestly love your work and how you break stereotypes with what people know the Leica M to be. You can use it for whatever you want and it's about the process and if you enjoy it more power to you. Love this video.
I really can’t wait to get my hands on a Leica, I don’t care how old, I just want to experience that feeling of color science and see the textures in person and not by other photographers pov, sadly maybe wont ever happen, yet I enjoyed this so much and loved it!!
@@ericmorales1934 No dude, I'm actively LOOKING for an M8. It has a very special look. I wouldn't use it for commercial work, but for everyday photos, I'm actively trying to find one.
This will be blasphemy to many but for the most part I much prefer the B&W that comes out of the M11 over the M11 M. Based on some of the sample images I have seen from different people the M11 M files can be very very rich and detailed but in way that doesn’t “speak to me” however I think the M11 M actually benefits from paired with less than perfect glass. I recently found a photographer who shoots his M11 M with the Zeiss lenses and his work is amazing. All of the above is just my subjective rambling 😂
Beautiful work. It’s kind of fun when shooting the M11 to do the old-school thing where you just pick a spot and wait for the subject to pop up there and be in focus. Certainly sounds lame to the uninitiated, but very rewarding.
Very nice shots! As you said no feedback from the m11 when shooting hybrid over 4000 but I can not stand switching filters all the time. I bought the m11 because of the faster shutter actually.
Totally get that. In an ideal world I’d have a filter on each lens and not have to switch, but it’s a rare day for me to shoot like this so I just swapped it out.
PO just delivered my 8 stop 46mm that I ordered because my 2 and 4 stops just weren’t enough to smooth out fast moving water in scenics. Thing about Leica in addition to shooting wide open is that you don’t want to shoot f11 or 16 when you want max sharpness. Difference from DSLR and Mirrorless shooting.
I’ve never even thought of using my ND filter so I can shoot wide open. I guess it just seems weird intentionally limiting the camera. But i really like the idea of and the outcome and I will definitely be trying this
Did this recently and realized I reaaaalllly like a 28mm focal length. Not necessarily more than 35mm but I like it a lot. So I agree - keep trying things. You never know what you might gravitate towards

Hey Man, that is some great stills, particularly the B&W shots, and in just 2hrs !! Just amazing !!
Thank you so much!
Wow. These are great especially given the challenges. Leica look is not just about the color science but a lot more. Well done.
Thank you!
Absolute brilliant. More and more the a M series is something I’m thinking about
It’s just a matter of time then!

It was definitely tough with the 50! Well… all of it was tough. It was a good experience and pretty humbling to see what I actually hit haha.
I was there, also with my Q2 and I loved it. this work from Venice was my first stuff featured by Leica
