    The EVH sounds nothing like that through the stock 4x12 cab, I think you need to adjust the resonance knob in the back

    • @GeoffSweet
      @GeoffSweet 3 года назад +3

      Exactly....the resonance is set really low....turn it up....and you'll sound much fuller...

    Finally a comparison that's not just full out distortion....I'm debating between the evh el34 or 6l6.... leaning towards the el34 because my band plays more classic rock & country music.... any opinion on that?

  • @rrguitar1

    Ok...after owning and giing through lots of amps over the years, I've come to realize that it's all about touch response for me. At least a major part of it is.
    I brought a mesa Mkv35 head back in june. Love the tone and Absolutely hate the feel.
    I need the Marshall type chewiness.
    That being said, do both of these amps deliver that and which does it better?
    From this demo, they both sound great, the BE sounds more evenly rounded while the evh seems more harsh. Someone suggested a preamp tube swap from JJ's to EH...that would be a great demo....

    EVH cuts like no tomorrow.
    Gain and voicing is similar but much brighter.
    Could dial back the highs and match much closer to the Friedman with the EVH with some more twiddling.
    But, the Friedman has a much more relaxed lower gain structures available though. Classic Zeppelin etc.

    • @rrguitar1
      @rrguitar1 4 года назад

      That's the thing, I'd want to be able to dial down on the gain and have more of a sweep.

  • @briant40
    @briant40 4 года назад +2

    you need to swap the tubes out of the evh. I had the same issue with the gain. The JJ's are too high gain and not found of their tone as well as their power tubes.... I would get EH pre and power tubes and retry the amp again. My EVH sounds more controlled with the gain after that switch.

    As someone who does play Metal and have heard both of these amps in Metal contexts, both of these amps do high gain very well. I've been interested in the Friedman stuff because while a lot of their amps are from what i understand essentially modded Marshalls, unlike Marshall Friedman seems to keep high gain players in mind, and i will personally argue that you'd have much better luck buying a Friedman and playing it in a Metal band than you would if you bought a JCM800 and paid a tech to do a whole bunch of mods to it just so you could get the gain that you're looking for.
    As for the EVH, i've heard about the C-137 mod really opening up the blue channel on the amp, and with the amp having EL34's in the power section, if i ever get my hands on that specific EVH amp i'd love to have the C-137 done on mine and see if it would sound anywhere similar to a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec with EL34, or maybe even see how close i can get to maybe a more modern take on a Marshall style tone. 🤔

  • @runnningonempty
    @runnningonempty 4 года назад +10

    Apples oranges...The Friedman has a nicer 2nd channel,Great. but if you want a great Distortion that EVH would KILL it on stage in the mix...It even has a better 2nd channel with a tube screamer The 5150 is a metal amp These are not surprises..The surprise no one is talking about is how great that clean channel is on the EVH..

    • @MaestroJericho
      @MaestroJericho 3 года назад

      yeah, I have the EL34 as well and it's still the 5150 vibe which is a different animal like you said.

    • @Justafeller
      @Justafeller 3 года назад +5

      "Kill it on stage in the mix" oh my dear dear friend. You really have no idea what you're talking about. As someone who owns both and many other amps, I play on stage and I assure you the EVH drowns in the mix compared to my BE-50 Deluxe. It's no contest at all. The BE-50 on the high gain structure, Sat+ and HBE channel with gain on 7 and response dimed? You wouldn't even hear the EVH amp. To the inexperienced, you may believe that, but you're hearing the character of the distortion and thinking that means heavier or better cutting. That's a mistake I hope you get to learn first hand someday. You'll quickly become a believer. Sitting at home is not like sitting in the same room. Do you know Jerry Cantrell for example only used his gain at 6 o'clock? I'd sell 10 of these EVH's and the two models I own to keep my BE-50. It's like comparing a 1000 hp Hellcat to a Prius. I'm not saying all this to be arrogant. I really mean you really don't have a clue what you're saying. You'd crap yourself if you got to experience the two side by side. You really should go play one and get back to me. I'm not saying just say you did. I'm saying actually go play through one.

    Two things, the master volume doesn’t seem to be turned up…aren’t these amps supposed to have the volume dimed when recording? Also what cab and mics, mic positions?

    • @thejay
      @thejay  3 года назад +1

      I don't think I have ever dimed the volume on a 50 or 100w amp, I enjoy being able to hear - both don't need that much volume to sound good, around noon is a really nice on both. Friedman 2x12, SM57.

    Hey there! Hey the minute you said "if you're looking for metal, go elseware" I subscribed. Finally a real demo. Djent. F**k people don't know what real metal is. Listen to early Judas Priest. Anyway, given the price difference, if you could mod the channel two on the EVH for lower gain it would be a great choice. Actually the 100 watt el34 seems to have a smoother gain taper on the channel two and its still cheaper than the Friedman.
    Cheers!

    Get a Bogner Goldfinger SuperLead 45 . $1,000 less than the Friedman and way more versatile. It will go head to head with the Friedman no problem and has a 68,77 and 81 mode with a built in spring reverb and comes with a footswitch for each channel with gain boost for each channel as well. I see all these new amps all based on the original circuitry..Marshall took that circuitry a step further.. Splawn, Friedman, this one, that one..in the end a guy makes a new circuit changes a transformer a few caps BAM..new amp brand...not knocking any of those but in the end you are buying a damn modded MARSHALL why not start with the industry standard, I mean all of them are trying to give you that great Plexi Tone they even say so...BUY THE DAMN INDUSTRY STANDARD in the first place..MARSHALL. You want the Plexi sound? Buy a Plexi..myself I own the JVM JS 410..THE ultimate Marshall...and don't even think a regular 410 has ANYTHING in common with the JS...the regular standard 410 has different boards and guts..and the JS doesn't sound all compressed..it has monster gain and can sound like any of the other Marshalls and the clean channel is to kill for, of course if you are one of those turn everything to the right and done with it...this amp has lots to offer those types also!! Dave Freidman is a genius but then again so is Santiago Alvarez.

    The evh could have been set up with more bottom. That is what is fooling everybody. The new 6L6 model is better than both of these. The freidman is a bit congested here.

    • @pino_7428
      @pino_7428 4 года назад

      Jerry Freese I’ve been playing the 6L6 EVH for the last 4 years no doubt is a great amp. Saying that the Friedman sounds much better and how do I know? Because I’ve tried the small box, PT 20 and the Dirty Shirley all of them are much better than the EVh in my opinion. The articulation and dynamics in the Friedman’s are spot on. The EVH have bottom end to spare but the sound is more compressed and sometimes I have trouble (depending on the venue) cutting through the mix.
      PS. A JJ jr is on the way.
