- SONG IN THE BEGINNING IS THE ECSTASY OF GOLD!
Metallica playing Enter Sandman from the self titled album (also known as The Black Album) on the Monsters of Rock concert in Moscow in 1991.
For Those About To Rock is the name of a video containing live performances by AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, Pantera and E.S.T. in the Tushino Airfield in Moscow, during the implosion of the Soviet Union.
In September 1991, only a few days after the August Putsch failed, 1.6 million rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the very first open-air rock concert, part of the Monsters of Rock series. For Those About To Rock...We Salute You: Monsters in Moscow also offers a look at the efforts of the Russian Army to try to postpone the concert (not on the original VHS release). - Видеоклипы
Music brought Russia and the US together better than 50 years of politicians. Music is power.
Bless your words
НЕЛЛ НОУ
Preach it, my brother!
amen brother
Johnny Bravo give this guy an medal
helicopters flying around, a 10 acre mosh pit, and the mafia running everything. This show was pretty fucking metal.
Except most of them came for AC/DC (headliners) and the fact that it was free. Wouldn't get that crowd if you'd have to pay the same price as now.
Nope
Mats Bøgwald - eeYUP!😳
1.6 million.....Jesus...that's the population of Prague
going to share the name?
Iceland?
no, it has 300k. It could be malta, has 500k
And most of them were there for AC/DC (and because it was free)
Mats Bøgwald was it free because the Russian government didn't want any commercial profit to be made , and also because of strengthening public relations?
Hey, look, no phones!!
Semaca1983 But a camera still got all of this. Your point?
Wuncler Laufenbum Cornelius Ulysses Albrecht LVX point is.. no phones bitch
i think is actually impossible to have a phone being really streched in all that crowd :p

Camillo A. No shit
Putin is somewhere in the crowd...
VERSACE xd
Yes. Shirtless, and probably riding a noble steed lol
Bill and Hillary are somewhere in that mass of deplorable s
Rasputin would be pleased
28 September 1991 - this concert
25 December 1991 - Soviet Union collapses
largelysubatomic the soviet union just died from 1989 or before
1991 was the mercy bullet
1990s were really a golden period for music
80's mostly and for movies
also there was no social media and phones so it wud be a lot happier time
The best part of this. There was no politics, No shots fired in Anger, Just listening to good music and no bad blood
+William Stryker In fuct , there are people got hurt or died in that arua
+William Stryker While this concert there was a riot were people got beaten down by security forces... And Metallica didnt even noticed :D
+GFG Nickname_not_chosen
how is that the fault of the band?
William Stryker Nope, just the way that it is.
I didnt said that it was the fault Of the Band. I just said that they havent noticed cuz so many ppl
i blame my parents for me missing this one. They should've 'made' me earlier.
Jaja agree
Hans Aspros yeah, fucking parents - left it too late
Velina Zhivkova Amen Brother!
Velina Zhivkova fun fact, 53 people got killed on this show
haha...good one, ma'am, horn's up!
Damn, imagine, being in a nation where music like this wasn't allowed for nearly a whole century, and than the next thing you know, you get to listen to this new and unique band that is just like, you know, jaw dropping to the people
Crowd: 1.6 million people, jesus christ. It was the sixth largest concert ever
What's #1?
+CarnageTrooper x Jean Michel Jarre at Moscow's Octoquincentinnial.
+Craig Atkinson I think it's actually the 5th largest concert ever :)
Actually it`s the 3rd largest concert. The biggest is from Rio when Rod Steward played, the second is from Jean-Michel Jarre, and this concert is the third biggest concert ever.(sorry for bad english)
This concert drew 1.6 Million
That is literally close to half the population of the state of Connecticut!
That is 3 Wyomings.
And 1/3 of norway
Gaming Palooza Empire it was actually half a million.
Qunne
that's almost twice the population of my country cyprus
Kids will call anything HD these days
720p was HD in 2012, when the video was uploaded.
Anyone with eyes can see that this video is not 720p, just because it says so at the bottom right of the screen doesn't make it so.
The main giveaway is that this was ripped from a DVD which has a much lower resolution than 720p.
google upscaling .. 720p refers to the resolution which has nothing to do with video quality, what you are referring to is bit rate
Dude, chill. Video is from the stone age. Am sure the sound quality was imporved.
El nava b
I still get goosebumps every time I watch this video
There were over three times as many for this concert than who has seen the video .. crazy..
This were propably the best 6 minutes of earths existance so far
Это был настоящий праздник Рок-н-Ролла! Могу сказать как очевидец - это было мега круто!!! Три супер-группы: PANTERA - METALLICA - AC/DC !!! Нет слов...остались лишь эмоции и память на всю жизнь!!!
More people saw it live compared to youtube views.
Sane Man the people in the back probably could barley see the stage.
how beautiful it is to see a concert without a cellphone!
clear.....
Pretty sure this concert was the main inspiration for the show Metalocalypse...
en el Polo Norte
because 53 people died?
I think it was 11 deaths and more than 200 rapes... Let me see if I can find the link on the web
www.funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/2240352/Metallica/
Thought the same thing, the setup of the stage is really similar to a lot of scenes in metalocalypse.
After 70 years of censorship and oppression, the russian people could finally listen to some american heavy metal !
21, I lived without it. Well, hairy men, shouting something ... musicality so-so ... I left this show after metallics. on the way home wrote a good poem. but to say that the cost to break up the country to hear and see it? not ... not worth it .. metallic would have lived and Pesnyary ..
Well man, the USSR had all free houses, electricity, water... This concert was free too...
EETFUK Free gulag vacations too
Only Metallica can put up a hell of a show like that and unite the US and Russia \m/
Well AC/DC and Pantera were there too:)
thunderstruuuck Can't find any footage of AC/DC playing there : (
Derpster Games AC/DC For those about to Rock live in Russia..........and yes they were the headliner
thunderstruuuck
and Pantera actually double Nailed it!! i still cant get that riculously Heavy Dime tone that doesnt even need another guitar to make it that heavy R.I.P Master Dime!! XD
thunderstruuuck ac/ac is not north american
This is why usa and russia should make peace
+Vinnie Skorprious I was going up when it collapsed and no one really hated America there. I wan't North Korea or something like that
Plus they apparently like Trump.
Good in My book!
USA RUSSIA, RUSSIA USA
Fuck Chay-Nay Namba Wan
Man...these guys were on track to be the greatest hard rock/metal band in history...then the 90's happened.
This was Metallica at the height of their greatness.
1:53 that's me in top left corner with the hat on.
ohyeah I saw you! Lovley hat!
You the guy with the sunglasses and handlebars? If so, great looking hat man!
Do you remember what was the ticket price?
Janko Boka
About, Treefiddy
oki, so anw not for free as here guys are reffering (and telling me that's the reason so many people were there :) )
could've been the greatest crowd surfing moment in all of time
John Collins then you're gonna fall down and getting crushed by the crowd
John Collins Would've been long enough for the crowdsurfer to take a 2 hour nap.
John Collins
You'd surf to Germany
i would hate to be in the dead middle of that
hello fellow redditor
Imagine needing to go badly for a number 2
For such concert you don't eat the day before and take as much little water as u can
not a great idea considering how dehydrated you'd be.
VODKA.... yea..
that must have been fuckin amazing! what a massive crowd!
Is seriously no one talking about 1:40 James is a maniac!
THIS IS TOO MUCH ENERGY TO TAKE IN
too much red bull. hehe
Crikey. That put a chill down my spine. Breathtaking.
There are a few concerts in history I would love to be at. This is certainly in my top few.
God I wish I was around when all these bands were at their biggest and had concerts like this.
Love that shot at 1:18. One young Soviet soldier in full uniform, dignified and keeping order.... and behind him, two other young Soviet soldiers hoisted on their friends' shoulders, jackets unbuttoned, rocking out. Says it all, really.
Imagine if you where caught up in the middle of that big as crowd and you had to take a mega shit
Lmfaooooo
well time to hold it in! haha
Shit and Destroy
By the way, Russia's population in 1991 was 143 million. So that means if you went back to Russia in 1991, 1 in 143 people you ran into would have likely been to that gig (ignoring that people traveled in from other countries obviously, but still)
I think that's so awesome
Im sure they still talk about it.
It was an epic experience.
Man that must've fucking stank
Every concert stinks. This was outdoors so it was probably better smelling than any indoor 300 person show. But if youre afraid of smelling sweat then I guess you dont get out much. I've been on busses that smell of pure death.
I live in NY nuff said
AlmightyMagikarp Thanks for making me smell this video.
They really shook the pillars of heaven that day!
and people say 'Enter Sandman' is a shit song. I think this video begs to differ imo
Caleb Bartlett It's just overplayed.
@@joshedillon9534 yeah overplayed this shit is undeniable
I think James agrees with you, I mean... god damn look at those vicious headbanging right as the riff gets the glory...
Fuck the people who say that, they’re a bunch of tumors
1 milhão e meio de pessoas curtindo o som, pulando e cantando junto, sem distrações como os celulares.
Do caralho.
Rock on.
Hail Metallica!
one of best performances u will see ever anywhere
1:10 is the greatest part
They didn't even speak the language but all had a common bond, great music. This was very moving because the concert was soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall, LIBERATION and ROCK!!!
Oh Lord Jesus! it lokks like thy're playing in front of sauron's army
+Alucard you have watch that film you're fucking right!!!!
I love Jason's head banging the way he spins his head.
sea of people, just amazing the power of the music ♥
"One rock show can change the world." -School of Rock
Holy shit! Ive never been the biggest fan of Metallica since the Black album, but you have to show some respect to a band that can get that many people to go bat shit crazy.
Like or dislike Metallica generally, this is a good song.
I doubt Metallica ever got such reception in the US, let alone anywhere else in the world. Unreal!
The gold era of concert
Jesus, the show is so fucking huge they got a damn helicopter flying around above the crowd. No way you could draw a crowd that huge nowadays at a single music gathering.
so....I was a littel stoned watching this but,
Did anyone else hear a Super Mario Coin at 3:14?
o.O
Marc Stafford Yes!
yep XD
Marc Stafford yes
Marc Stafford at 3:14 I got a messenger notification and it sounded like a fucking coin! How the hell did you know this shit would happen?!?
Yep, sounds like Kurt hit a natural harmonic... a guitar sound.
I have seen a few bands but nothing as good as this wish I was there, cheers from New Zealand.
This would be the true definition of LIT
I fucking love this video. Yeahhhhhhhhh...
The legend says people are still leaving the concert ...
I'm amazed! I'm literally like wow! So many people! Damn!
I'm not a big fan of metal rock but Metallica is insane. My brother is a big fan and I really like them they're so good!
1.6 million people to be exact.
1.6 million people to be exact.
people were definitely getting crushed to death in that.
Does that thought fill you with pleasure?
I've been to shows with just 150 000 people and 300 feet from the stage I was still getting crushed to the point of choking. Can't imagine 10X that many people.
Must have been poorly set up. Most places seperate the crowd with chest-high fencing so there's no crushing effect.
Yeah but.... we're talking about Russia here lol
Erik Johnson 53 to be exact
1:08 to 1:25 give me chills
no words to describe this... I just wish something like this would happen in today's world...
One of the most awesome vids ever.
25 years ago today. Still pretty damn ed amazing, no metal show will ever have this turnout again. They made history, Pantera too.
2020 & I still think there's a traffic jam leaving the venue! I get goosebumps [every-time] watching this gem! Love & Light to you all out there in RUclips Land and BeYoNd !
Will never forget this show. Awesome Metallica line-up.

I can safely say that if you had to go to the bathroom, you are either were doing in in your pants or on the floor where you are standing.
It still gives me goosebumps;) Back in those days so as nowadays what a blast!
That was the good ol'days ...... now ..... :-(
Honestly I think these Russians deserve this consert they were STARVING for western music ! peace from Canada
The biggest crowd for a legendary American metal band concert whos popular across the globe for around 4 decades was in fuckin' USSR that too during the cold war era. Thats what Music does man.
That fireworks at the beginning of the song was really good..
How much fucking adrenaline must be pumping through them to see THAT size of a crowd and to be playing a song as bad ass as Enter Sandman! Holy fuck that crowd!
Damn! How many times can I watch this video and have a good time???
Whenever the word Soldier, seeing Soldiers, or just having the random thought of Military come across my mind, this song always starts playing in my mind.
Best metal vid on YT for me
Look how many people that is. This concert would had been unbelievable
1:55
James’ look there almost seems as if he is shocked by how many people are in the crowd
Minute 1:09 is brilliant watching the bass players hair spin around. The power of the moment is absolutely stunning. #MostExcellent, #NOOICE
The power of music is incredible ...
metallica at its finest..
WONDERFUL!!
This redefines a live show. #Respect
this absolutally is the real metallica...And they'll never have another bass player like Jason Newsted, this guy is just awesome!! This man was the face of metallica, so much more than this actual.
1.600.000 ppl went there that day WOW !!
This brings fuckin tears to my eyes ! Look at this crowd, look at the excitement ! Wish I was there ...
I have the DVD with this footage on it. I am so happy we have You Tube. It will save me another experience having broken DVDs. I have to be honest though. It may be time for Metallica to hang it up.
only rock n roll will save us all✌
Even the soldiers we enjoying it
that started the conflict between soviet army and russian army, soviet navy and russian navy. even soldiers were having doubt of their own governement.
James Hetfield is a fucking legend and still rocking all these years later!!!! Badass...
Awesome!
Geez, that is so beyond impressive.
oh man… the good old days
the power of music brought us together, the crowd is insane, one of 'em must be ran out of air
