Best guest ever ! Great chemistry , and you guys chat like old buddies
I think Mike would get a kick out of Chris Alo as well.
I love when Mike is on! Keep getting him on the show while you can. Once the pandemic is over he's going to be as busy as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest on a greased floor...lol
He brings so much. A couple of super cool dudes tonight. Thanks guys...\m/
We need a show with Mike Portnoy and Chris Allo on what makes a great live album.
LOL
20 bucks is 20 bucks
"If You Want Blood" and "Unleashed in the East" are definitely on my list for this topic.
Wasp live in the raw for me
First two that sprang to mind for me.
Here’s one: Dream Theater Live At The Marquee. The fact that there isn’t an official Images and Words tour live album with the FULL set list (which would make it a double album) is a tragedy
01] The Who - Live at Leeds
02] Deep Purple - Made In Europe
03] Motörhead - No Sleep Til' Hammersith
04] The Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!
05] Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live
06] Rory Gallagher - Stage Struck
07] AC/DC - If You Want Blood You've Got It
08] The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Live
09] Johnny Cash - At San Quentin
10] Emerson, Lake & Palmer - In Concert
11] Genesis - Live
12] Cheap Trick - At Budokan
13] April Wine - Live
14] Mott The Hoople - Live
15] Max Webster - Live Magnetic Air
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live
Really surprised Pete didn’t mention that one
@@dennisalexander5580 I am REALLY surprised I completely forgot that one!!!!
That came to my mind immediately. Truly stunned neither of you guys mentioned it.
Yes, they missed one here. I thought Pete was gonna bring them up when he said he was going back to 77’ for one... good pick!
Lenny and The Squidtones...
Should've been double
Rory Gallagher - Stage Struck
Slade - Alive
Blue Öyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening
Blue Öyster Cult: Some Enchanted Evening is one of my favorites.
Me too. And I would have thought Mike would have had some things to say about that being that BOC was a NY band but he didn’t say anything. He may have been distracted I think. Anyway, agreed.
They did do an expanded CD version later on, but that doesn't count per the rules stated, so I also agree. I had read that they wanted to do a double album at the time, but the label said no.
Yep. the old Side One in particular was stellar. Reaper was probably better live in 81 although Buck's guitar at the close is great when he throws in the Gil Blanco County riff. The later additions of "Harvester" & "ME262" were bang on, should have had the bottle to find "Nosferatu", "Morning Final" etc in live versions,
"Slade Alive" is one of the greatest live albums as well.
Cheap trick At Budokan, for me. The original release was a single live album that should’ve been a double live album, but then they put out Budokan II in 1994 with the rest of the set from that show.
If you want more, go get the 30th anniversary edition cd and dvd, which has both Budokan performances from 1978
Shocked this wasn't mentioned during the show ... this and Unleashed in the East were the first ones that came to mind!
I thought that one but I do have the 30th anniversary edition
No Sleep till Hammersmith- Motorhead
Maiden Japan- Iron Maiden
Unleashed in the East- Judas Priest
If you Want Blood- AC / DC
Some Enchanted Evening -BOC
Loved going to see Mean Streak back in the day at all the clubs in the NY Nj area. Great bunch of girls that really rocked out
LOL those 5 would be on my list as well. AWESOME
Lou Reed - Rock and Roll Animal is considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. Certainly deserves an expanded release.
Agreed, though their is Lou Reed Live which is suppose to be the rest of Rock and Roll Animal on the same night.
@@keithoday9896 It is ! so with the two albums you have the complete concert.
I prefer Live in Italy. To me Rock and Roll Animal is more a Hunter/Wagner album than a Lou Reed album. I prefer if he plays guitar himself. Less flashy for sure but it has so much character.
1. Motörhead - No Sleep 'til Hammersmith
2. Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
3. Genesis Live
4. Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (Live Sets should've been expanded)
Love the Ummagumma live disc. Might be their best live recordings.
I swear I like most traditional, and new wave metal and prog bands, but I can't understand the worship of Motorhead at all.
"Genesis Live" should have been a double (including "Supper's Ready").
The studio Ummagumma album (BLEH) really should've been replaced with another live one.
@@gog583 Eh, but at least they eventually put out the double live Seconds Out (and Three Sides Live in the 80s).
I can listen to Portnoy talk music all day and night. Love these shots you're doing with him Pete. You know, Charlie Benante is also super-knowledgeable and you should reach out to him and try to get him on as well.
How many of us wish we could just go hang out in Mike’s music room and just listen to music with him for just a little bit and talk shop. There is so much stuff in there. 🤘😎🤘
Pat Benatar - Live From Earth
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live
Dio - Intermission
Saga - In Transit
Helloween - Live in the UK
Starz - Live Action
Three Dog Night - Captured Live
Blue Oyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening - (Now deluxe edition)
Cheap Trick - At Budokan - (Full Concert Available)
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - In Concert (Works Live presents full concert)
That Saga album is great!!
Seems impossible to me that the THREE DOG NIGHT live record was only one slab.
Rolling Stones “Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out”
Cream ‘Live Cream’
Jimi Hendrix ‘ Band of Gypsys”
Deep Purple “Made in Europe”
One problem with Get Yer Yahs Yahs Out, I have the full remastered boxset they only played for about an hour. The boxset also includes full sets that night from BB king and Ike And Tina Turner and at that time You had an 11pm curfew.
@@donaldellis8952 yes. They had that same set list for the American Tour. It would have been very good if they were longer.
Yes that Purple !👍
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live! How could you miss that? Killer Album!
Mahavishnu Orchestra Between Nothingness & Eternity
Joe Walsh You Can’t Argue With A Sick Mind
Frank Marino Live (1978)
Robin Trower Live!
Pat Travers Go For What You Know
Big yes to Joe Walsh
I think Martin Popoff might have met his match for best guest! Mike seriously knows his stuff, great to listen to all of his stories. Keep them coming!
Spinal Tap - Smell the Glove! Should of been 11 disc set! (Because 11 is more than 2) :)
@@trembling3674 Their cover of Bohemian Rapsody, with John Deacon on backing vocals, is legendary🤣
Well and just imagine how loud they would have been at “11”???
Another great show with Mike who has such a great personality that really comes across as genuine and sincere, with his knowledge and love of these great albums. The show really lets us (the viewer) become a third party in something that most of us would not otherwise experience. It’s so much fun. Thanks Mike and Pete✌️👍
Part 2 with MIKE & PETE/ tremendous 👍💯
No sleep till hammersmith is recorded at leeds and newcastle city halls - not hammersmith lol - its called no sleep till hammersmith because hammersmith was the last dates of the british tour - you can hear the roadie scream hello newcastle on the record lol - it says it on the back!!!!!
Exactly! The remastered CD has all details, double CD extra live tracks etc etc....🤘😊
@@TomAxl22 i have the vinyl from years ago and a battered cd from the 90s - il have to upgrade
J. Geils Band Live Full House.
Absolutely, came to mind first for me.....along with Midnight Oil's Screaming Blue.
A little gem I have always liked was Lou Reed’s Rock And Roll Animal. Well done and produced. The only Reed I really like.
Bongo Fury - Zappa & Beefheart 1975
U.S.A - R.I.P. - King Crimson 1975
Blackfoot - Live in U.K. 1982
Live at Last - (unofficial) Black Sabbath 1973 ( released 1980).
Live at the Fillmore - The Mother's 1970
All Classics for many different reasons. Great discussion guys!
Btw - Motorhead were HUGE in the U.K. 1980-81, and headlined over Ozzy at Port Vale Football Club in 1981 after that US your supporting Ozzy.
Some choiv
Without watching I am guessing Unleashed in the East by Judas Priest and If You Want Blood You've Got It will be at the top of the list.
Before watching this video, I will chime in with the greatest live album crime of all - The Who releasing only a single disc of Live at Leeds..!! I was blown away decades later when the entire show was released.. I am sure one of our hosts will list this one!
This, so much! What a fantastic, honest live album. Right up there for me. Black Sabbath's "Live At Last" too, very honest, unpolished recordings, but sheer, raw energy and power.
Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East. The full concert is available on bootlegs, whereas the vinyl and CD were heavily edited (songs omitted or heavily cut).
WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@ChazinFl1 Yes - this has been described as one of, if not the, best live albums of all time. The fact they never (officially) released it in full is a shame.
I remember when the original vinyl LP came out and it came with a 3 track 7 inch single. Beyond The Realms of Death was on one side but can't recall what the other tracks were. Bizarre they didn't include those track on the later CD release.
@@MRB16th I completely agree! I loved those live versions of Rock Forever and Delivering the goods. There is not enough live material released during that period! I want MORE concerts from Staind Class and HBFL albums,
@@ChazinFl1 Also, the full versions of Genocide and Starbreaker are epic.
The 4 that come to mind:
Traffic: Welcome to the Canteen
The Who: Live at Leeds
Procol Harum: Live With the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
James Gang: Live in Concert
Yes! Forgot that James Gang was a single record. Good call!
Hey Pete can you please get Mike to say “All the damn time” next time he is on, also maybe get him on as a guest spot on Hudson Valley Squares?
Surprised Pete didn't mention Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live 1978.
Pete has mentioned on so many shows how the Frank Marino Live album should've been a double album I thought for sure it would've made this list. It would be tops in mine.
@@jydymyyyr9630 A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
@@seaoftranquilityprog You're forgiven...
Don't forget Mott The Hoople Live - only a single. Love your interaction with Mike!
Foghat Live
I would love to see more people acknowledge Canadian band April Wine. I’m from Toronto and April Wine was my first concert. Their live album from 1974, just called April Wine Live, kicks ass with heavy guitars and an amazing drum solo from Jerry Mercer. The songs included are: Mama It’s True; Druthers; Cat’s Claw; I’m On Fire For You Baby; The Band Has Just Begun; Good Fibes; Just Like That; You Could Have Been A Lady. Again, if your not familiar with this band and you wanna crank up the raw energy of guitars, this album kicks ass!
Mountain Live "The Road Goes Ever On"
plus those two Crimson albums mentioned at the end: "Earthbound" & "USA"
Oh, and "The Mothers - Fillmore East June 1971"
Yes! MOUNTAIN live was only one slab. Good call!
Joe Walsh - You Can't Argue With A Sick Mind
The Who Live At Leeds
Mahogany Rush Live
Mott The Hoople Live
King Crimson - USA
Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Concert
AC/DC - If You Want Blood, You Got It
I've had a high quality bootleg version of Maiden Japan from Nagoya, Japan - May 23, 1981 with Di'Anno on vocals for years. It has 17 tracks (every song from the first 2 Maiden albums) and should have been officially released, as opposed to the short EP that came out in its place.
It was released in a limited full length version by their official fan club but agree its incredible
Mike Portnoy is awesome!
Thanks, Mike, for bringing up the live Talas album! Love that one!
On the subject of Band Of Gypsys, that album was put out to comply with contract agreements stemming from Jimi’s previous contract signings prior to his time with Chas Chandler managing. He owed Capitol an album (even though his regular record label was Reprise) so they put out Band Of Gypsys as a quickie live album with all new material to get past that release requirement. Damn fine album considering the circumstances for its release.
Other live album I would put in the should have been a double album is Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live.
MP in da house. Gotta go for Live at Leeds. And Genesis Live. Sabbath live at last. Crimson 74, unleashed in the East, Maiden Japan, Greg Lake with Gary Moore, get yer ya-yas out, that first dream theater at the marquee
Crimson U.S.A. for sure!
Damn I forgot about “Live At Last” by Sabbath. Good call!
A few albums that come to mind are:
Soft Machine - Noisette
One of the greatest live albums, Noisette was cut to a single cd disk, leaving out the performance of Facelift, which had segments that were lifted and included for the version on Third. Noisette is a fantastic document of the band at their loudest, featuring the band in quintet form.
In its released form, it would likely have been a double album, but with Facelift, it certainly would've been a triple album.
801 - 801 Live
The official release was a great show, however, more songs would've been welcome, as they performed a number of other songs as a unit, including additional Eno tunes. More Quiet Sun songs would've filled out a nice double album as well.
Guided By Voices - For All Good Kids
Again another performance that had songs cherry picked for a single disk release. The full 44 setlist would've created a nice, full, probably triple disk release. This performance was recorded at Maxwell's in Hoboken during the band's first classic period.
The Who - Live at Leeds
Saxon - The Eagle has landed
Motörhead - No Sleep till Hammersmith
Genesis - Genesis Live (with Supper's ready)
and my top pick:
Dream Theatre - Live at the marquee
The whole band was on fire on this one. Glass Moon, Ytsejam, Take the time, Learning to live are missing
Foghat Live.
Yes it's great
The Trower, Foghat, and BOC albums immediately came to mind.
Great to see Mike Portnoy back on the channel 🤘
My Pick : Slade - Slade Alive
Well Alright Everybody!!
Oh yeah, a must live album !!
Blue Oyster Cult-Some enchanted evening, for sure!
Can't believe I forgot that one. When Pete mentioned this video was coming it was one of the first I thought of...and then left it off my list.
Welcome back, Mike!
Rt ,love that Mike is literally an encyclopedia of band knowledge ! Give me hope;)
Haven't watched yet. AC/DC If you want blood comes to mind immediately. Edit: watching now, love Mike's Animals t-shirt.
My favorite Floyd record...and one of my favorite concerts...
I actually edited the missing songs from the Glasgow set to create the complete concert for the AC/DC's If You Want Blood!
SAXON "The Eagle Has Landed" 1982. Probably the greatest drinking album ever recorded, and one of the fastest.
1- Deep Purple- Made in Europe
2- Slade- Slade Alive
3- Mott the Hoople- Live on Broadway
4- Sensational AlexHarvey Band- Live
5- Foghat- Live
6- Pat Travers- LiveGo for what you know
7- The Who- Live at Leeds
8- Mahogany Rush- Live
9- Rolling Stones- Get your Ya Ya’s out
10- Robin Trower- Robin Trower Live
11- Lou Reed- Rock N Roll Animal
12- Free- Free Live
13- King Crimson- U.S.A.
14- Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group- Live
15- Ten Years After- Undead
First album that comes to my mind is Some Enchanted Evening. I love it but I wish there were more Spectres Songs on it.
"Energy is contagious
Enthusiasm spreads"...both Pete and Mike have some Chemistry going and having Mike on the program is not only amazing but highly energetic. Keep it going guys.good show. 👍
I see Mike Portnoy and I click, keep these videos coming boys.
ELP: Pictures at an exhibition
King Crimson: USA
Zappa: Live at the Filmore
Pink Floyd's 4th side of Ummagumma
Tull's 4th side of Living in the Past
Mahavishnu: Between Nothingness and Eternity
Just a note. Heaven and Hell was recorded. It was the b-side of Summertime Blues. It was also on their Rarities/Missing albums. But Live at Leeds is my number one pick. How long did we go before we (legally) got the full Tommy concert?
My #1 pick is Foghat Live, 6 songs is just too short. They were on fire then, would love if this got expanded one day.
It's inexplicable that Foghat didn't at least include "Driving Wheel" on that live album in place of the Chuck Berry cover, "Maybellene."
@@ronforeman2556 Driving Wheel is missed on that album big time, I'd also love to have seen Eight Days On The Road, Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie and Don't Run Me Down included.
Motörhead- No sleep till Hammersmith.
Saxon- The eagle has landed.
Judas Priest- Unleashed in the east.
Lou Reed- Rock and roll animal.
AC/DC- If you want blood.
The Who- Live at Leeds.
When i bought unleashed in the east on the day of release the album came with a clear vinyl 7 single with extra tracks..!!
Same, but mine had a WHITE 7" vinyl single with Beyond The Realms Of Death, Hell Bent For Leather and Delivering The Goods Awesome album, still. Criminal that it was released as a single album, especially when you consider all the bonus material that has been added over the years since.
The first album that instantly popped into my head was Pat Travers Band -Go For What You Know. I don't believe there is an expanded version either.
Could listen to you two all night. What a nice guy Mike is. Thank you both.
Johnny Cash- Live at Folsom Prison or Live at San Quentin.
so much to say...great video...i'm older than you two and i wish i could remember my tickets from back in the day...played alot of clubs back then...saw the stones at the garden, zeppelin at the garden, jethro tull, new york dolls, velvet underground, saw both of your t-shirt bands, pink floyd and triumph, gentle giant, rush, mott the hoople, queen, so many more...do you guys remember a club called february's....loved that place...also hammerheads....one of my favorite live albums was a single album...free 'live'....and by the way...priest came out with 'unleashed in the east' as a single vinyl album in america, but as a double vinyl import called 'priest in the east at the same time'...whitesnake did the same thing with 'live in the heart of the city'...i got both the double vinyl albums back then at bleecker bob's....import albums seemed to often be doubles where the u.s. just put out single versions....but as long as it's good...be well guys...peace always...rocky
Great conversation - thanks, guys. Lots of fantastic picks here. I'd add Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live.
A COMPLETE oversight on my part...it SHOULD have easily been in my Top 10
I grew up in a town 30 minutes south of Buffalo, and I'm super stoked to see Talas make this list! I saw them open up for Iron Maiden in Buffalo on the Powerslave tour (I was too young to go to clubs and bars then).
NASSAU COLISEUM, KISS JUDAS PRIEST.... 79. I WAS THERE TOO. FIRST CONCERT.
My favorite single live album is *Slade on Stage*. I saw them on that tour and it was one of the best live shows I ever saw. They really brought the house down!
Pat Travers - Go for what you know
There was a UK of "unleashed.." version with an EP with "beyond the realms.." which is THE version.
30:50 it's like they're both forgetting Mike is in a band with Billy. Lol
Great show!
No Sleep Til Hammersmith was recorded mainly at Newcastle City Hall with a couple of tracks from Leeds.
There were so many double live albums out when Foghat Live came out. I just didnt get it at the time. A double live record was the standard! FOGHAT LIVE was THE live album that should have been a double. I still dont get it! Where are the tapes? Put it out!
Anyone remember MC5's, Kick Out The Jams live album. So much energy from the late 60's!
What can you say here? Portnoy and Pete talking music and showcasing albums. This is why I do not have Cable TV anymore. This is the new way to watch. Has been for a while now. The internet and new internet coming in the future is the way in my opinion. I love coming home after a hard days work and watching these types of things. Really Great stuff guys!
Horslips - The Belfast Gigs. They did a double live album earlier in their career that was poorly recorded. This one was released after their last studio album and they had enough material from 7-8 studio albums to stretch it into two.
My friend was drunk, past out during the opening song and woke up during the encore...Motorhead were great.🤣🤣
We lost my buddy at a Nazareth show, but found him passed out on the hood of the car! Didja have fun, mate?
I saw UFO play that Strangers set in 78, in the UK in front of about 300 people in a rock club.
Just from my collection-BTO-Japan Tour,Blackfoot-Highway Song Live,Roy Buchanan-Live Stock,Cheap Trick-Live At Budokan,Crack The Sky-Live Sky,Derringer-Live,Rory Gallagher-Stagestruck,Sammy Hagar-All Night Long,Mahogany Rush-Live,Mott The Hoople-Live,PFM-Cook,SAHB-Live,Slade-Alive,Y&T-Open FireWarren Zevon-Stand In The Fire.
Viva! Roxy Music, their stompin´´76 barnstormer
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Live, Focus- Live At The Rainbow...
Real to Reel Marillion. Only two studio albums at the time but still plenty of stuff for a great live double album
Highway Song Live Blackfoot
If you want Blood
No Sleep til Hammersmith. Always remember roadie Eagle introducing We Are the Road Crew. Got to work with him when I spent a day as a Motorhead Roadie
Genesis Live
Steve Miller live
Live at Budokan Cheap Trick
Monsters of Rock 1980 a live album of the first Donington MOR festival. Only two songs from headliners Rainbow and no Priest
Exit stage left definitely should be an extended double live album
I bought Exit Stage Left when it came out in 81. No CDs back then. It was a double live album.
A single live album I was surprised didn't come up: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live 😳
Pink Floyd's "Ummagumma" could qualify as a single since the 2nd record is a studio recording. Also ZZ Top's "Fandango", is half a single live lp, the other half studio.
Yeah..ZZ Top should have put out a double live album in the 70's...
I never got the whole half live/half studio thing. Seems like contract fulfillment to me
Marillion - Real to Reel
Rory Gallagher Irish Tour '74' or Live In Europe could easily have been great double albums - although I am so used to them now I tend to think they are perfect the way they are :)
Irish Tour is a double album.
I thought it was pretty cool when Mike mentioned the Penny Arcade in Rochester NY. It was basically our version of the Chance. I saw Talas there many times. Along with many other big names.
I am 51. My point is that a lot of the shows these guys went to. I was a little young to go see. Those few years younger made me miss a lot of shows
Glad to see Pete mention Elton’s 11-17-70. Another 70’s single live album from Elton John was Here and There. This had the best version of Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding. It was later expanded to a double length album, with a guest appearance by John Lennon.
Another single live album that was later expanded to a double length album was Whitesnake’s Live...In the Heart of the City.
My list would be
1. Unleashed In The East-Judas Priest
2. Live-Robin Trower
3. Band Of Gypsys-Jimi Hendrix
4. Some Enchanted Evening-Blue Oyster Cult
5. If You Want Blood-AC/DC
6. Live-Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush
7. Live-Foghat
8. And Live-Johnny Winter
9. Starstruck-Rory Gallagher
10. No Sleep Till Hammersmith-Motorhead
Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed
BOC - Some Enchanted Evening
Priest - Unleashed in the East
Mahogany Rush - Live
Riot - Live
Foghat - Live
Iron Maiden - Maiden Japan
Alice Cooper - The Alice Cooper Show
Rory Gallagher - Stage Struck
38 Special - Live in Texas
Easy one for me, not seen this video yet but the first Mahogany Rush live album. Loved that record.
Oh ya that's an awesome live album. First Rush album I'd ever heard, i was blown away
SRV and Double Trouble - In the Beginning ... I like the raw nature of that record, seems like Stevie could've easily played for at least another half-hour playing a few more songs off the first album plus more blues covers.
Did anyone have the Johnny Winter double album on vinyl where side 4 was totally blank but it had the traditional track marks as if there were 4 tracks but each one was silent. It was called Second Winter. On the Priest live album...in the UK when it was released in 79 there was a free EP with the first so many thousand copies with the live versions of Rock Forever, Starbreaker and Beyond The Realms Of Death
Both episodes with Mike have been superb. Great choices so I've chosen a few others. Would love to have a chat about great live bands/artists that never released a live album.
1. BB King Live at the Regal (all his single live albums were great but this is the best)
2. James Brown - Live at the Appolo
3. Muddy Waters - Live at Newport
4.. Zappa/Mothers - Fillmore East
5. Randy Newman - Live
U.K "Night After Night"... Excellent pick, Mike! Thanks for sneaking that one in.
Free Live, in my top 3 live albums, and The Who Live AT Leeds. Great single live albums.
Great show, Mike is so great - drummers have the "best ears"!
I think Cheap Trick's live at Budokan could have worked well as a double.
Cheers guys.
