- The Modi Government has set the ball rolling for restoring One Nation One Election in India. The Union Cabinet has accepted the Kovind Report, which was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu in March.
But the real challenge begins now.
If all the stakeholders - which includes political parties and the states - are to be brought on board, it will need two big Constitutional amendments to be cleared by Parliament.
Plus, ratification will be required from at least 50 percent of the states for creating a unified electoral roll.
A tall order at any time, but more so now as Prime Minister Modi heads a coalition government. For instance one of his key allies, the TDP, did not even give its opinion to the Kovind panel.
Forty-seven political parties gave their opinion to the Kovind panel - 32 supported the idea of simultaneous polls and 15 opposed it.
I do support for one nation one election definitely.
Those who can't hold the election of MAHARASHTRA together with the elections of J&K, HARYANA, JHARKHAND because of the fear of losing are now somehow taking about ONE NATION ONE ELECTION 🤣

Even poor country's like pakistan follow one nation one election then why india not ? It may take few more phases but it can be done simultaneously with genral election. The things which require is more number of evm.
It's not because of fear it's because of our beautiful neighbours we need high security in j&k.
One nation one election is in 2029 till that time we will have a lot more EVM and security forces deployed.

This move will kill all regional parties and make it as one to two party system....Better idea would be one nation two elections one for loksabha and one state assemblies... State assemblies will act as mid term elections and act as a referendum on national elections mid way and vice versa holding govts responsible!!

Too much democracy has hampered the growth of this nation.
It is better to have two party system rather to have end numbers of smaller regional party and alliance which in a way weaken the central authority and influence and incline them towards so called special states and area where they will waste the hard earned money of taxpayers through distributing freebies alike Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in this general elections.
Tell me a single regional political party which has done a tremendous job without spreading hate among the fellow citizens of this country.

The bill is needed to be passed from the Special Majority which means 2/3rd of Total Members Present and Voting on that day and simple majority of total membership of the house.
The house strength is 543 but all the MPs are never present and if the government convinces some parties for either voting in support or abstain from voting and bring the total members voting on that day to 450-460, then they can easily pass the bill.
2/3rd is not required of the total strength of the house. 2/3rd of total members present and Voting.
Eg. If 50 MPs are absent and TMC decides to abstain, so the total votes will be 463 and then the 2/3rd of this will be 306.

Never going to happen in certain constitutional amendments they need 2/3 present and voting. NDA doesn't have 2/3 majority.
I hope instead of opposition opposing they ask Modi for concession on completely different things like, All bureaucratic appointments within Government of India must happen through a parliamentary panel consisting of equal number of opposition and ruling party members this has potential to strengthen institutions in this country.
Opposition should make more demands like that and should even threaten Government that if government rams One nation one election like farm laws then opposition would go bangladesh route and stop contesting any elections and BJP can win all 545 seats. Opposition should then threaten the government with internationalization of the issue like taking it to UNHRC, US State department, European council of human rights and many other.

No need to hold polls together as it keeps politicians sensitive to public issues let people decide how much mandate they want to give
If they are so keen on conducting the elections for the state and the centre together in each state,
rather than moving all the state elections to the time of the National election, they should conduct the national elections for different seats at different times together with their respective state elections.

- This won't cutail the rights of the elected state goverments.
- This should offer the same saving as one nation, one poll.
- you don't have to worry about syncing the elections each time some state goes out of sync.

It is a good idea to hold elections at a time. And at the same time EC should check why they are not able to conduct the state assembly in one phase. I am totally disappointed the 2024 election process took more than 45 days to FIRST to LAST phase. There is lots of burden and waste resources for Government. Even after so much technology availability EC is failed to conduct in one phase. I remember 20 or 25 years back even though technology is less EC used to finish the election process very early. Now even after the elections completed we have to wait for a month to get the results.First EC image has to be corrected and then go for ONOP.
