Also keep in mind when you feed in hot conditions. Both the metabolism to digest the food and becoming active because there is food will warm up the rabbit. So feed early and late, rather then in the heat of the day.
I agree, I think I mentioned it on our latest podcast therabbitrycenter.com/rabbitry-podcast-tips-breeders-enthusiasts/ but You’re comment reminded me that summer time is the only time I water every 12 hours but feed at dusk & dawn due to the heat and extra warmth from the calories they’re burning. Thanks for your comments!
Thank you so much for all of your videos. We really appreciate all of your information. We got our three rabbits only a month ago, but before we did we watched tons of your videos and bought your rabbit course on your website. Definitely worth it! I’m so glad that we were prepared with all of your information. Thanks again!
Right now I only have 5 cages. I use one gallon milk jugs. For a week, we were over a 100° on the heat index and it definitely made a difference for the rabbits. Yes, it takes up a lot of room in a deep freezer. But in the summer there's not that much I the freezer And I can most of my rabbit.
A 1 gallon jug of ice sounds like it would work great. It’s true what you said, The timing works out perfectly. By the time you’re getting ready for deer season and you’re ready to put your venison in the freezer. Those water bottles are out of the way. Thanks for commenting!
I bought a Dutch buck and a mini-Rex here in Thailand. Anything other than lops are hard to find. Just waiting for the Rex doe to come of age. It's about 85 degrees on average in my car port. They get a fan and frozen bottles. Bottles turn liquid in half an hour or so. I'm hoping it's enough to keep my buck, Bono, fertile. I'll find out once football season starts! I have two computer fans like you for nights, but have a larger fan for the day. The computer fans are 12V - 0.25 amps, but the two solar cells don't seem to ever charge the battery fully. Using two 5W cells, maybe that's not enough? Your comments that it makes them heaters in such hot weather has made me pause for thought. I do have a line on a pregnant New Zealand red. Fingers crossed I can get one of her does. My wife doesn't think I'll be able to do the processing. Love your videos. Thanks. Dara.
If your batteries aren’t charging, then you can try doubling the size of your solar panel and also in the mean time, at night put your battery on a trickle charger. This should bring it back from the dead. Here’s a video that will help you get into the right mindset for your first processing day. Best of luck. ruclips.net/video/w6o-22gky-w/видео.htmlfeature=shared
@@TheRabbitryCenter Thanks. Appreciate it - I didn't know about trickle chargers! It's a wonderful video on dispatch. Heartfelt and honest. I love my breeding pair already. The grow-outs will be the grow-outs.
We have started using blue ice - the thin style with heavy plastic. I attached spare fencing under the bottom of the cage and slide the blue ice on the fencing under the cage. I then put ceramic tiles in the cage on top of the blue ice. They crawl right on top of the ceramic tiles!
We had to learn the hard way this summer when it hit high 90s, we Lost 2 preg does. Hurt my heart! We had put them under the shelter and it just didn’t work. We actually found a spot to move half in colony in the woods (our gals) and put the shade cloth on top of what stuck out. We also threw in a ton of dirt. I think our remaining does not get pregnant probably was the best thing. Live & learn. Separate them out late spring, keep in woods and use dirt to burrow! We since then have had no issue. We were off grid and living in a camper too, so we were limited on helping! We are totally rebuilding and preparing for next year! Great video! Thanks

You're right about the computer fans in hot temperatures. I have the 12 CM 12V 0.25 amp type. They don't seem to generate much of a breeze at all. I can only use them at night. It can go from 34 to 38 degrees celcius here. I can only use them at night. During the day I bring out a cable and plug in a bigger fan. I'm using a trickle charger for the motorcycle battery but that battery is never fully charged. Got to up the solar panels. Only got two five watters. If a battery is only half-charged will it only output half the power?
I’d recommend getting a spare 12V battery and swapping when charges get low -that’s what i do. I simply put the low battery on the trickle charger for a few days.
I have 3 8 foot outside cages one under each huge shade tree. My inside ones I have 3 - 4 fans going. Seems to work well for me and I live in Wisconsin

low power on the batteries will cause the system to shut down when using a solar charge controller. This will cause the SCC to send the full power load directly to the battery and won’t start the fans until the battery is sufficiently charged.
What do you think of converting an old shack into to an indoor colony with climate control? I have a pretty old big shack in was thinking about converting into my rabbitry

My tote nest setup has been a mixed blessing. I’ve lost a kit that went off and got too cold recently. I noticed it too late in the morning to revive. BUT! Once the fur comes in, they have plenty of room to split off and cool down, and that’s the more pressing issue by far.
Thanks for reaching out. Our litters only remain in the kindling totes for 10 days. You may want to wrap your runs in hardware cloth especially If you’re going to let your kits remain in the tote past 10 days old. We remove our kits to a grow out cage around day ten to check their eyes and to easily monitor them, also we have access to them if needed.
@@TheRabbitryCenter That’s interesting. I’ve been trying to keep them in the totes just a little past the 14 day mark since I had one break his leg in the standard cage floor… full recovery, thankfully! If they’re out on day 10, is that to save hay? I’m swapping out the bedding in a day 10 litter today.
@@bobjob2514 it’s so they don’t run all over the run. It makes it very difficult to inspect the rabbits when needed and at this point, they’re easy to gather and move to the grow out cage where we will continue to monitor them until weaning day. Day, 10 is when all their eyes should be open, which is a great day to start inspections of each rabbit.
@@TheRabbitryCenter So that’s where we differ at the moment. My totes are in the cage space proper. I wouldn’t want to lose any kits in the pipeline either!
Bobby I am moving my rabbits into an inside shelter. It is an old house I converted into a rabbit barn. It is fully inclosed. I have a big exhaust fan to let out the smell . Would it be ok if I use a window unit to cool the room along with the exhaust fan.
That sounds like a great setup. You do run a low risk of caliberating your rabbits to colder temps and when your power goes out during the hottest point in the season they may need emergency ice bottles and fans to avoid heat stress.
When rabbits are consistently exposed to temperatures of 90°F and above without any relief, they can suffer from heat stress and even infertility. The key to preventing this starts with the location and design of your rabbitry hutch. By implementing some effective strategies, you can help your rabbits stay comfortable and productive, even in the heat.
You’ll find studies showing aspen or paper-based bedding is a safe choice but it’s pricey (3-4x the price). You can find it at TSC. I’ve used premium pine shavings for years. It’s paramount to use pine shavings in a well ventilated nesting box(which is usually the case) or even a tote with good air circulation. It is generally believed that good ventilation can help dissipate the phenols and reduce the concentration of harmful fumes in the environment. In a well-ventilated hutch There’s no danger of damaging a rabbit’s respiratory system and you’ll raise healthy & hardy rabbits.
Also keep in mind when you feed in hot conditions. Both the metabolism to digest the food and becoming active because there is food will warm up the rabbit. So feed early and late, rather then in the heat of the day.

We have sycamore trees. Huge leaves make great shade, vigorous growers, rabbits love eating the leaves.
