  • Gigantic collection of Amber. While visiting the fabulous Kauri ( pronounced something like cowree, or Co-dee ) Museum in New Zealand , we found an astonishing collection on display. There are thousands of amazing pieces in this Amber collection from all over the world. All the shapes and sizes you can imagine. What an incredible collection. Cool stuff.
Here's a link to the short video I posted of the entrance. • Kauri Tree Museum review
Kauri Tree Museum review. 100% thumbs up! This fabulous museum was a complete surprise.
Located at 5 Church Road, Matakohe 0593, on the north island of New Zealand, I expected to spend a half hour or so and was astounded at how much was there to see. You could easily spend an entire day there exploring this wonderful place. The kauri (Pronounced something like 'cowree") trees and anything to do with them can be found here, from history, logging, preservation, amber collection, (Gum digging), industry and anything else you can imagine that would have had anything to do with these enormous trees. Truly the "redwood trees of New Zealand"
I tried to make a video of the highlights as I went through the exhibits, but gave up about 1/8th the way through after already recording probably 30 minutes of content.
Truly well worth planning to visit this place.
I'll be posting a few longer videos of inside.
I'd say it's New Zealand's version of the redwoods. I posted a short video of a smaller one tree a couple weeks ago. As for the content of the museum, it has pretty much anything to do with the trees, the lumber, the logging, the logging industry and its history including machinery and lifestyle of the industry. Likely the largest collection of chainsaw varieties and I'd guess the world's largest collection of amber. It was amazing.

Yes Amber is quite the stone with the transparency it has ,I have seen a handful of pieces about 15 yrs ago here in Winnipeg in a private collection, the coolest one had a mosquito in it, they had collected the pieces from trips they had taken just about all around the globe, it is now gone, they moved some years laterite was sort of once in a lifetime thing to see in a private collection, humble experience 👍

@@99unclebob I don't think I've ever seen any except in movies. It never occurred to me that such a collection could exist, or that ANY piece could be bigger than an inch or two.

I couldn't believe it ( as obvious from my constant "wow" comments) The whole museum was awesome. I tried to make a video of it but gave up in the end because it was so big, but have some footage of some of it.

@@kickapootrackers7255 I don't know if it's all New Zealand amber, but I believe so. (Or the majority). I'd never heard of the Kauri tree before, but they were truly like the redwoods. Of course nearly logged all out like all things 100-150 years ago, people never thought about preservation.
