Anyone who didn't see the update on the community tab, the weather was not fun the other day but we are alright! The lettuce didn't like the hail we got, but more on that in the next garden tour!!
The fans, to me, were actually soothing to hear in the background. Like brown noise plus your soothing voice. Your garden is phenomenal!
thanks Bonnie!! ♥♥
Hi Heather. I am the one you told that you would show your mushroom project. Thank you for that. I am glad you are having great success with your mushrooms.
Have a great day.
Yes!! I'm glad you got to see the progress. I just took more out of the freeze dryer and video'd that too for Monday!
800 POUNDS of pollen?!?? Holy cow! That's awesome!!!
Heather - love that you show things that go wrong as well as go right, and how you'll handle all of it either way. Garden and greenhouse is making me a little jealous, haha - I know it's going to just keep on flourishing. All the mushrooms, yum yum! They're just so gorgeous. Definitely on my "will have at my someday homestead!" I'm sure Stormy forgave you quickly, Nef greatly enjoying all the greenery for sure haha. 💚💚
Poor Nefarious tried to eat a small leaf cluster today that apparently blew onto the fence overnight in the storm. He had regrets!!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Oh no! zapzap eeek
Beautiful! It makes me so happy to see things coming back to life in the spring!
Your garden inside and outside looks great!! Best wishes that your replacement tomatoes take off!! I hope the storms didn't do damage to anything besides the lettuce! Thanks for sharing!! The fans in the greenhouse were hardly even noticeable on the audio. Stay safe!!🙏❤
We finally have some things planted in our garden! Yay!
YAY I am bringing Megan some plants later on
Noise wasn't bad at all. Everything's looking wonderful! Thank you. I am so sorry about your blight. Delighted it wasn't in all your tomatoes.
ME too!! The tomatoes that took their place are doing great so far ♥
That lettuce bed is GORGEOUS!! Seriously so jealous lol. I am gonna follow your footsteps next year and start the lettuce in the house super early and plant it out. The seeds I put out really didn't do much, at least not yet. Those greenhouse fans are awesome. They aren't loud on camera at all.
The seeds took forever to germinate outside but once they did... BAM! However the transplants are doing great too.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I have a bunch that came up, they just haven't done much as far as true leaves. I am really hoping after all this rain and with the cooler weather next week they grow more. I know I have a GIANT bok choy I have to harvest tomorrow so at least that did alright lol.
Fans were not an issue.
Your garden is looking great. I go out to my garden every morning and it makes me smile with everything coming up.
Glad u made it through the storms. We live in Arkansas close to the Oklahoma line so once it blows through here I always think of you and say a prayer for you and your family.
Be safe out there in the hot zone for tornadoes!!
My brother’s dog’s name is Buster. She (yes, she … my nephew named her when he was like 3 years old ) has a collar and my brother used the flags to trick her to stay off the patio furniture. 🥰
Hahah it works!!
Your fan’s are just great! No need to worry about the noise. I am extremely sensitive to sounds and they don’t bother me ❤
Great to hear!! Thank you!!
Barry’s Crazy Cherry always germinates slowly and looks stunted at first. Then all of the sudden it take off and doesn’t know when to stop.
YAY I can't wait!!
Everything is looking very lush. We sow our parsnips in Feb/March, and just leave them nerdling away until Christmas. They are much better after a frost too. As ever though, it's always really interesting to see what can be achieved in different conditions, and it's what I love about watching what other people are doing. I wish I could give you tips on the Blueberries, but the first time I tried growing them I put them in old sherry caskets. My old Border Collie guard dog, who identified as a Husky, thought I'd made him the most perfect bed and was determined to sleep in them until they were dead. Now the ones I have can't get fruit to survive past the birds, regardless of what I do. I pick my battles, and enjoy the flowers and red autumn leaves... sigh... lol
I just may leave them if they won't bolt (the parsnips)! So sorry about the blueberries!! The birds somewhat pick the strawberries apart but so far blackberries and the few blueberries we have had they have left alone... for now!
Phew! I got up this morning hoping to see a posted video from you all saying you were safe! Answered prayers…enjoy the weekend!
Hugs Denise! Thanks so much! You have a good weekend too! ♥
Those purple mushrooms are so beautiful! I’ve never seen such a thing!
Me either until this year!
For so long I wanted to homestead but it seemed so unattainable to me because I’m just not the most organized person but watching you has been such an inspiration to give myself grace and just try. I love your perennial garden it looks so full and beautiful already!
Yes!! Please have grace for yourself and go at your own pace. ♥
@@SageandStoneHomestead you are so encouraging. Thank you for all you do
Sounds like making the rocks would be a great school art project for the kids. I have heard people do that but I just put netting on mine. Garden looks awesome.
Awe, my poor Stormy. She wants out. ❤❤❤
I feel so bad she got zapped again!
Exciting! Beautiful garden progress... looks sooo delicious! Great tips! Definitely painting some rock "strawberries" too! Blessings on your growing season Kiddo!🌻🐛🌿
I really didn't notice the sound of the fans until you mentioned them :) Great video, Heather.
Good, yay!! They have a lower sound than some but move a lot of air!
So much growing!! I have been putting off planting out my starts, it’s a bit of procrastination prepping and nervous about the weather. But it’s always amazing how they take off given the chance! Nefarious got one straight to the face 😂😂❤️too funny.
I thought the wind would blow the lettuces toward me.... but apparently not lol!
Again, another great video!! Your garden looks so nice. Wow, your lettuce garden is amazing! Looks like you will be having a great crop of berries also. Have a wonderful weekend and blessings to you and your family.
I add a tablespoon of white vinegar to a quart of water. I then pour the quart directly on the root area of the blueberries. In the late fall I buy cheap coffee and put the unbrewed grounds all around the base.
I love that, slow brew coffee for the blueberries haha!! That's a great tip, thank you!
First, those Large lettuce leaves would be delicious to wrap around eggroll in a bowl! Second, Beautiful progress and garden third, your garden tours are always my favorite and I watch alot of different ones, and finally this was in no particular order😂😂😂😂
I should plan some wraps with the lettuce leaves! Thank you! ❤️
Those will be large and in charge yummy!
Wow! Everything is looking so good. Loved your garden tour. ❤❤❤
Awesome video as usual. The garden looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing. Love and Blessings to you all. ❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Thanks for watching, Doris!! I love getting to share the garden with everyone!
@@SageandStoneHomestead
Wow! The greenhouse is looking great!❤ The fan noise is nothing! I’ve heard some where you can’t hear the person talking at all. 😊
Thank you!!
I love the Hungarian heart tomato. They did so well last summer that I planted a bunch of them this year.
Can't wait to try it!!
Your garden is amazing!!! I have another week or so before I can start planting mine. Can’t wait.
You're in the home stretch!!!
I swapped seeds for cucamelons and one of the seeds ended up being a tomato! I am going to continue to grow it and see what the mystery tomato is! Your gardens look wonderful!
I love mysteries like that! So fun!!
Great throw. And your garden is looking magnificent.
Thanks!!
i dont know if its possible to turn fans off. the sound hurts my ears. appreaciate it. and also cant wait to hear more on your mushroom adventure. 😊
So nice to see your garden spaces… glad y’all are ok! For the blueberries on your hedgerow, you country to give them a liquid sulphur drench… or give them a nice shot of liquid acidic fertilizer…
I didn't know it came in liquid form! Thanks so much!
For the blue berries look into watering them with some vinegar diluted in water. Thats the easiest way in my opinion but you will have to do it more often then just adding a acidifier, its not a long term cure.
Thank you!!
Fans weren't bad. 👍
Great!!
So many great things! A bit "jealous" of your lettuces - I planted in my Greenstalk to hopefully avoid slugs and they're not growing as large or as quickly as I expected. The arugula/rocket has stayed quite small (too small to harvest) and has already bolted. The flowers are pretty and we'll collect seeds for a fall planting. I honestly think I just planted too many seeds in each pocket of the Greenstalk. I wondered if a treatment of the copper fungicide would possibly help your tomatoes that suffered from blight so quickly, but obviously "too late now" LOL. I'm glad you had spares to plug into those spaces, though. I basically gave up growing too many beefsteak varieties (especially Heirloom types) because of our wet Springs and high humidity facilitating blight on those. I laughed at the "lettuce bomb" hitting Nefarious - I know it wasn't intentional and he didn't seem bothered at all once he realized it was something tasty. And the children's garden beds are looking AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!
I have copper and that's a great idea for putting on the surviving plants! Thank you!!
Ohhhh my goodness! Your mushrooms 😍. I did purchase Lions Mane and Pink Oyster from Anthony. I'm so excited!
Yay you won't regret it!! They are so much fun.
Great tour, thanks! I couldn't get the yellow currant tomatoes to germinate! I've still got a few seeds that I'm going to try sowing directly to see if that works.
Let me know if it doesn't work and I'll send more. Sow shallowly
Your garden is already sooo lush and beautiful!! Your lettuces are incredible and you're gonna have so many ground cherries!! I decided not to grow any this year because one plant got absolutely ginormous. It was probably around five feet around! I had put chicken manure there a while before and I guess they loved it haha. I just found them so tedious to harvest with them being so big. I just don't wanna give that much space to them.
Thankfully our kids are eager to collect them!! We will see how long that lasts lol!! I'm also a big fan of how they readily re-seed. I want to grow enough to preserve jams with them this year.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I was hoping to preserve some last year but I gave a ton to my granddaughter and my husband kept taking them to work lol.
@@SageandStoneHomestead Different topic: without even thinking I planted luffa at the very end of cattle panel arch and then pole beans all along the bottom of the arch. Do I need to move the luffas? Will it choke out the beans? I remember how much yours took over the trellis last year!
The garden looks amazing! Glad to see the blueberry bushes!!
Your lettuce is beautiful! 😍
Thank you! 😊🥬
Looking great.
Thanks!
I think you’re in Southern Kentucky. I’m in the Southern Indiana area/Lousiville Kentucky area and I have found that I can’t grow the tomatoes that everyone else can. I think we get more rain than you but I think you do deal with rain like we do. But I have to look for specialty tomatoes, disease resistant tomatoes. Heirlooms are out for me and just regular tomatoes. So far the best tomatoes I’ve found for hot rainy areas is the Plate de Haiti tomatoes I got from True Love seeds.
I've grown several heirlooms outdoors, but not much in the greenhouse. I grew heatmaster hybrid tomatoes in the greenhouse 2 years ago and those did awesoome!! Hopefully the flow fans and cover of the greenhouse mean that heirlooms have a better chance as the season progresses :)
chestnut mushrooms are my favorite.
Same!!
Check out using baking soda or milk for blight control
Thank you!!
Could you use some of the elderflowers for elder flower cordial, (before you leave the rest for the bees) or are you too busy with all of the things going on at this time of year? 🙂
I thought about doing something with some of the flowers. I know Ikea sells an elderflower beverage that i love.
Hi Heather
Although root parsley looks similar to the parsnip, which is among its closest relatives in the family Apiaceae, its taste is quite different
Dou you know there is a tree kinds of Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) and there is much better tasting Parsley root parsley (P. crispum Radicosum Group, syn. P. crispum var. tuberosum) and Leaf parsley The two main groups of parsley used as herbs curly leaf (P. crispum Crispum Group; syn. P. crispum var. crispum); and, Italian, or flat leaf (P. crispum Neapolitanum Group; syn. P. crispum var. neapolitanum) :)
Toxicity
The shoots and leaves of parsnip must be handled with care, as its sap contains furanocoumarins, phototoxic chemicals that cause blisters on the skin when it is exposed to sunlight, a condition known as phytophotodermatitis.[25] It shares this property with many of its relatives in the carrot family. Symptoms include redness, burning, and blisters; afflicted areas can remain sensitive and discolored for up to two years.[26] Reports of gardeners experiencing toxic symptoms after coming into contact with foliage have been made, but these have been small compared to the number of people who grow the crop. The problem is most likely to occur on a sunny day when gathering foliage or pulling up old plants that have gone to seed. The symptoms have mostly been mild to moderate.[27] Risk can be reduced by wearing long pants and sleeves to avoid exposure, and avoiding sunlight after any suspected exposure.[28]
If eyes are exposed to the sap it can cause blindness.[29]
The toxic properties of parsnip extracts are resistant to heating and periods of storage lasting several months. Toxic symptoms can also affect livestock and poultry in parts of their bodies where their skin is exposed.[6]: 221-222 Polyynes can be found in Apiaceae vegetables such as parsnip, and they show cytotoxic activities
Interesting! I have to look more into that especially the tree parsley! Thank you!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Sorry is not a tree is three kinds
OH haha ♥
I got the Kelloggs soil at my Home Depot and it was horrible it was essentially still mulch like just barely broken down. 😢
I'm so sorry. We got 2 pallets of it and I'd say 90% of it was fine
I heard something about not growing sweet peppers next to hot peppers it will make the sweet hot and vice versa!
This is my first year gardening so I could be wrong .
It doesn't happen in the first year but seed saved from that could be questionable!
@@SageandStoneHomestead thank you for the knowledge
Have you tried growing cherry tomatoes in the greenstalk? I just purchased two more and I would like to have at least one more cherry tomato in my garden this year. Last year I made the most delicious marinara sauce and tikka masala sauce from cherry tomatoes.
I've accidentally grown full size cherry tomatoes in a greenstalk. I did so without supporting them so they cascaded down the planter. It worked well except shading out the lower tiers. If you do it, plant them in the lowest tier and let them ramble!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Thank you.
Are the top tomatoes in the green stalk needing some compost tea? I am not a big fan of these type of planters because for me, the nutrients seem to leach out and down out of the top tiers. There are some things you can do to mitigate this though.
That's not a bad idea!! I can try to spot-water those with some rabbit manure tea, I'll get some steeping today.
For the lettuce bed was that a lot of seed at a time? I want mine to look like that!
Yes I scattered two packets!
After last year I will never attempt brandywine tomatoes again. I think they are just to quick to blight
I think I'll try them again next year and try to baby them a little to get some fruits (away from other varieties)
I love the joy you get from your garden, I hope to get there one day. I seriously thought I heard you almost sing when you saw the dwarf tomatoes growing in your greenstalk. What kind of watering system do you have in the kids garden beds? I am having the same issue with my blueberry plants. I may just buy a raised bed and transplant them so I am interested to hear what advice you get on those. As for your herbs I know you use your freeze drier a lot, I dont have one of those but I want to know if you dry out your herbs for seasoning or do you just use them fresh when cooking when you don't freeze dry them.
The kids beds have Oyas!! They are terracotta pots that hold water and slowly disperse it into the soil: shop.epicgardening.com/products/garden-oya-watering-pot-sc
@@SageandStoneHomestead oh that's cool.
Ms Heather, I love your garden tours. I do have a question…is it ok to top off hot peppers? For example serranos, habaneros Tabasco. I guess I could try and see what happens 😬. A little scared…not going to lie. Thank you for sharing. Love your content.
Yes! We have done that many times with hot peppers!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Thank you 😊. My last frost date is May 15th and I cannot wait to start planting my peppers and all the things. I will pinch them off. Thank you for giving me the courage to do so and for always inspiring. I am so grateful for you. Have a wonderful safe weekend.
Heather, I won the pink princess mushroom block, when do I harvest them? I think you said 7 days, not sure.
Hey there! The edges of the mushroom will start to flatten slightly and that is the perfect time! :)
Just put cover over your brassicas.
The wind is a massive issue here and managing the covers ends up being more work than they are worth. Our favorite is to just grow in the seasons where the moths are not active. the greenhouse will have lots of kale this winter :)
Could you pour some of that acidic whey way down there to make it more acid?
Great idea I always have lots!
Looks wonderful. I’m wondering if you sell your Elderberry and if so where? I love it but it’s hard to find home made. The lady I used to buy from doesn’t really make it anymore.
I need to see what is possible with the cottage law here in KY but we have sold berries before! Might do that again once the website is up
@@SageandStoneHomestead if you aren’t able to ship I may be able to come to you. I’m in Southern Ohio.
