I prefer the Univibe before OD/Dirt. A phaser works well in the same way. However, remember that if you use a compressor before your drive to give it a boost and sustain, make sure to put the Univibe BETWEEN them. If you place it before the comp, the "throb" will be smoothed out and diminished. Thus the interaction with the OD will not be as pronounced.

There are case uses for distortion into univibe, though I love the phasing swooshes of the univibe into distortion best.
Years ago I would've killed to get that sound, now i think I would kill if I heard that sound. Gets pretty annoying real quick. I prefer the effect on one side with the dry on the other. You still get the stereo separation without the annoying sea sickness thing going.
Terraform user from the future here: my favorite 'easter egg' function in the Terraform is in the U-Vibe mode. Take a mids-rich vintage style fuzz like a one-knob tonebender clone, and run it into the U-Vibe with the depth all the way down, i.e. no oscillation from the vibe, and voila nasty mid-scooped fuzz! It's like the difference between Fuzz I and Fuzz II on the Boss FZ-2, all from the inherent EQ curve of the vibe.
So trippy with headphones on. It's definitely smoother sounding and less jarring when it's univibe into distortion. The other way is cool too, but it's so much choppier feeling. Almost like the difference between triangle and square wave tremolo.
My favourite effect is Univibe, it immediately makes me think of 60s music , when you hear high gain distortion with loads of chorus 80s music. Sounds awesome through my headphones.
Bought my first Univox Uni-Vibe back in 1974. Guitar -> wah -> fuzz/distortion -> Uni Vibe -> amp. That's the layout for that 'Machine Gun' sound. IMO: Reversing the Vibe & distortion order gives a more 'lumpy' vibe-sound. Which is fine.............if you're looking for 'lumpy'. ;-)
My small brain guideline: Time based effects (reverb, delay, chorus and sometimes flanger) sound best after dirt. Tonal effects (wah, phase, univibe) sound best before dirt, because they impact the tonality of the dirt. Stereo can be accomplished in numerous ways, as shown in the video. All that being said, the best rule is to listen with your ears. I once heard a blues guitarist put reverb before dirt, and in that context it sounded stellar.
jbognap I agree have tried all combinations and vibe and Phase before Gain is where it is at = more chewy, organic, and becomes integrated with the dirt. I do like a tape delay pre dirt however (but numerous delays after in the effects loop as well) for some special sauce
That sounds great! I love the vibe after the delay into one amp. But I really loved the first stereo effect. I’ma dual mono player and love the width when stereo effects kicks in. Great demo!
Whoa, Univbe sounds killer in stereo. First time hearing this! I think the unvibe is great either before or after distortion, depends on what you're going for.
Great video, a common question raised by many players. Good luck with the Terraform! I might buy it. I sold my Keeley Workstation; I was using it for modulation in place of individual pedals, mostly. So, if the Terraform sounds good and doesn't cost me my house, I may give it a go.
Thanks for the videos, Brian! As far as stuff I wanna see, i think i would really like to see you and Josh of JHS get together for a video collaboration. Also, maybe a circuit walkthrough? Maybe this is boring but I would like to watch you put a circuit like a fuzz together and talk about what each component is doing.
thanks for this, I recently got into one of the vibe patches on my multi FX and want a proper Univibe pedal, but was curious about signal chain order thanks loads for this Brian, saved me a lot of pissing about (in my case the order is also important due to my board set up, 1 way is just swaping out a pedal the other way means a total board reshuffle)
So far, I prefer it before overdrive or distortion. (And that's what I preferred in your example here, Brian- 'Vibe into distortion.) That IS the CLASSIC arrangement. :) (I use a Fulltone MDV-3 V2). I will likely experiment more, though. I will eventually try it in the amp's effects-loop.
I've gigged with Univibe after dirt for a few years now. I use it more as a Chorus alternative and even clarifier. In a crowded bar and lousy band mix, the Univibe set with low intensity will kind of pull my signal out from everything else.
Long time fan of the univibe sound, Hendrix and Trower of course but I never had one 'til recently. Mine is a Klinger, made in Australia. I absolutely always had any modulation effect post distortion as a rule (chorus and flanger when I had one etc) but after getting this vibe, it sounds magic at the start of the chain.
Nice comparison. Thanks Brian. The stereo effect of this stereo deja vibe is huge but most of the univibe effects I know are mono (deja vibe, dunlop, rotovibe, real 60's univibe?). I always put my fuzz face in front of the deja vibe (mono) into a cranked Marshall (as would Hendrix). In your video at 4:00 you definitely get the mushy Hendrix/Univibe kind of sound. I love it. Thanks again. Vincent.
late reply from a synth/sampler egghead: i have been working on a modestly “complete” stereo pedal chain for a couple years (along with my modestly larger pedal toolbox) and i have the EHX Operation Overlord + TC Viscous Vibe so i can use them in either order while preserving an already-stereo signal, and i love BOTH orders while leaning just a little bit toward dirt-before. however, the VV does not have good control over stereo LFO offset, so i’m crazy enough to be considering buying a second one used to manually dial in the stereo sweep, as Jean Michel Jarre has always done with 2 Small Stones. the VV is an excellent univibe especially to run after other stereo effects (a Boss/Roland Dimension-type chorus before it is a B L E S S E D pairing), it’s just missing a couple things for actually changing the stereo field in the Toneprint editor. but having 2 of them would create additional new options that could get incredible in the studio - if I have something split into 2 stereo chains or 2 different/manually doubled stereo tracks that I want to glue together, I can use the VV’s in actual Vibe mode to re-correlate them, mixed with a separate dry signal with its own panning placement etc. to rebuild the uni “chorus.” when i have 3D univibe on my elec pianos + stereo multitap delays it’s over for you bozos.
I've always preferred modulation (outside of chorus and doubling and volume) before distortion, doesn't get as harsh or crazy and cuts better, that said the jet flange of phase with alot of fuzz or distortion before it is a cool effect. My answer is both lol, have a fuzz first and an overdrive then some modulation then a big muff. All that said, stereo pedals after dirt, wow amazingly.
That pinnacle sounds amazing!!!! I need one. Lol. But i will have to say that i like the univibe into distortion better, but i agree with u on the stereo aspect and the use of the univibe in stereo would be worth it for me to have it after dirt
I kind of like both, maybe a uni vibe with a loop that you can add overdrive to with a switch to select where it sits is needed. Great work on the wet dry style chorus, really does make a much wider sound.
Brian, Another Awesome video but how can you forget The Pinnacle Deluxe and even thou the Tumnus Deluxe is awesome as well, lol plus the flashback (reverb). Take a short 3 day vacation get a way please, your #1 Fan Josh Cintron !!! 👍👍😍😍😍😄😄😄🤗🤗🤗🎸🎸🎸
Brian, since you like the Univibe first; I think the secret is to: run the stereo Univibe first, each output goes into it's own Pinnacle Deluxe then into a separate amps; problem solved... 2x the number of Pinnacles sold. :-)
@@hoboroadie I've been thinking about that - do they cancel each other out, do they sound like an ensemble of individual tones or do they blend to one tone?
@@robertglowinski5617 That's my preference if running two amps. I have a Source Audio LA Lady that can route an OD to one output, and a Fuzz to the second output. But sometimes, I prefer to use a Bluesbreaker and BC183 Fuzz instead.
@@whynottalklikeapirat Not if you use an ABY splitter - you need it when running 2 amps, for phase correction, isolation, and ground lift. An EQ pedal (or two) doesn't hurt, either. Just helps to match up the two dirt tones so you get a nice "ensemble" effect. If you run something like a TC Quintessence Harmonizer in the chain as well (pre the two dirt pedals) and you turn one lead guitarist into two!
I’m a huge fan. Thank you for everything you are doing! I recently started following you and Blake on both of your podcasts. So these questions are really for both of you. Have you ever talked about what strings you play? And also, did you ever think about doing a video/podcast about how important it is to just remember to keep playing? I mean not getting stuck in the rabbit hole of gear. Which is a great thing to do! But none of it matters if we don’t remember to keep playing. Just a thought. Thanks again. -James
monster sound. How about before AND after? Your TC chorus effect definitely adds some low-mid and bass which overdrive my little speakers. I really like a fuzz or delay "sandwiched' between TWO vibes for a cool fat sound. I'm using a Dunlop Univibe into my effect chain then to a Roland JC120 with the vibrato on full depth but slowest speed. Seems to rock the house and now cracks have appeared on the ceiling! Please keep the videos coming - Rob in Reno
Vibe into distortion sounds the best to me with this gear. I should move my TC Electronic Viscuous Vibe before my OD pedal on my pedalboard, although it sounds good after currently (but it could be more Hendrixy sounding).
It's a funny story... my grandmum passed away a few years ago, and apparently left each of us a couple hundred dollars in her will. It was just perfectly enough for me to be able to buy a Drybell VM-1 (the red one, which I had been drooling over for a while!), when they were putting them on clearance...because they simply sounded killer! It was almost like she knew I would be able to use it for my guitar stuff, because she was always so supportive of my music.
I personally prefer modulations and filters before drives (as it would be if I was only using amp overdrive). After distortions they tend to cause too many nasty peaks. Wah after distortion doesn’t even sound like wah anymore and sounds more like a synthesizer. The only exception in some cases would be a flanger, which for whatever reason can get rich but not ugly if it follows distortion.
I've got my Fulltone MDV-2 ( I have the pedal version so you don't have to bend over to change the rate) after my tuner, then my Wah pedal. Mike at Fulltone recommends that setup. Brian it looks like you have a real early version of the Deja-Vibe. The volume on the Uni-Vibe sounds lower.
I use Two Messa heads and Marshall cabs , one slightly breaking up the other with lots more distortion, sounds incredible, once you go two amps stereo it's hard to go back to using one , using a Boss GT 1000 I can split the effects to different amps creating real cool ambient tones.....never going back to one amp....Univibe rules....
with the univibe, on headphones it sounds kinda like on the left ear it goes out of phase and on the right it is in phase, then on the left its in-phase and the right it out of phase, that's so cool
I have my modulation effects BEFORE my gains except in the case of my Ele tri Harmonic Lester-G Leslie emulator. It goes after my gain pedals. Someone's I also run it into my effects loop is Stereo
I prefer the sound of the Univibe into the distortion, but loved the stereo panning. So... use two distortion pedals and two amps! Run each channel of the Univibe into a distortion pedal that run to separate amps. More gear, but the best sound. More gear is more better, anyway. :)
WHY does vibe sund better before distortion than after? Vibes are essentially phase shifters. But where phasers concentrate phase shift such that it produces identifiable notches and peaks that seize our attention, vibes distribute phase shift more broadly, resulting in broad shallow dips, rather than steep narrow notches. The broadness of the dip functions somewhat like a frequency-dependent tremolo. When you stick that ahead of something that clips, it brings the signal closer to and away from the clipping threshold, but moves around where in the frequency spectrum that happens. The result is a more "animated" sound. As for stereo stuff, I have a little Fender SK20 amp. It's a cheezy 2 x 10W, dual 8", stereo chorus amp - a baby JC120, if you will. One of its virtues, though, is that it has a stereo insert loop for effects, so that I can process each channel differently. One of the things I like to do is insert a phaser with the dry signal cancelled to one channel, such that the two channels produce a delightful stereo phasing effect. Nice demo, Brian. It meanders, but then so does life, band practice, and RUclips comments! :-)
Very cool Brian 👍 Wet/Dry sorta thing is super cool My Ge fuzz likes to be last so I try all kinds of variations My vibe and wah is after my fuzz and drives and I'm liking it like that so far Just got a Supa Trem 1 so have to experiment some more for the final line up lol 😁Might all change No rules in rock n roll Good stuff Brian
I'm sorry I meant first not last for the Ge fuzz It took me a while to understand I always thought amp side was 1st in pedal talk A year ago I used not use hardly any pedals just a TS in front of my Tonemaster A Brave New World has opened up for me Running about 6 pedals
I'm on a new...uh...mission you could call it. If a question is asked, even a rhetorical question, answer it. Whose to say? ; I am ! Notice the utility. Now to the video. Yes.
How about guitar into Stereo Vibe: Vibe L > OD Distortion > Amp 1 Vive R > Phase Reverse (If Needed) > Clean Boost (to Level Match Signals) > Amp 2? I would try it but I don't have a stereo Vibe. Thoughts? Thanks for the great videos!
It’s kind of great both ways? I have a JHS Unicorn V2, which I can never fully decide if I really like(?) after my fuzz/gain pedals. The Unicorn can blast the front end of the amp pretty hard by itself, if you want. Having the gain before, but running into a dirty amp can be fun! Total cop out response...🙄
I never would have thought to split the signal. I guess I know what I'm doing this afternoon. Everyone here is a gear nerd to some degree. Make videos that interest you. If you're entertained, we'll be entertained, and learning.
Great video. Never thought of using it like that. I am interested in using a delay into a crunchy distorted amp. I have a Dunlop Echoplex that is very tape like but it is still tough to get the delay level just right in a crunchy amp with out it sounding like garbage. Thanks
I personally dig the vibe before the dirt pedals. Thanks for the education, great video! Especially considering I just picked up a first version Deja Vibe last night and hadn't even considered putting it at the front of the chain before my dirt pedal. Now I'm wondering if the Ventilator pedal could have similar results?? Also what are your thoughts on Compressor pedal placement? Specifically a fet comp pedal? I've heard interesting things putting it after dirt pedals and in my chain it couldn't be first regardless as I run a vintage germanium fuzz pedal at the front and they don't like coming after anything accept your guitar. Unless you have the right wah pedal setup but I have yet to play with a wah. Anyway thanks again and I really appreciate any advice you have!
Thanks! I have several videos about all of those topics. Here’s one regarding the compressor questions: 5 fun ways to use compressor pedals ruclips.net/video/x3m7ebiBLUM/видео.html

In between: After my overdrive pedal into a crunchy amp.
Makes sense that the univibe be pre dirt. All my favorite UV sounds were vibe into overdriven amps.
I record two tracks with the univibe before distortion. Best of both worlds, you get the sound with the stereo wobble.
Brian, it seems like a delux and bravado are out of the phase? Switch between mono and stereo from here: 2:07
I'm on a new...uh...mission you could call it. If a question is asked, even a rhetorical question, answer it. Whose to say? ; I am !
Notice the utility.
Now to the video.
Yes.
That's quite a quest?
@@maxonmendel5757 it is easy though.
Brian would you be willing to give a tutorial on stereo delay soundscapes? Sort of gilmour kind of thing?
It's all down to have you ever been experienced. People who've been exp put it after, people who have not put it before 😆🤪
It's a shame that my Blackstar HT stage 60 doesn't take my Pinnacle well 😒
Thanks B!, Always a pleasure. Can you do a hard clip vs. soft clip demo? (Unless you have and I missed it)
I prefer vibe after gain, but use a phaser before gain, so it all balances out in the end.
Frank Marino / robin Trower / Jimi / Pat travers !!!! Vibe into dirt !!!!
Stereo Univibe into two different ODs or a stereo Drive/Distortion/Fuzz eg: Source Audio L.A Lady or Kingmaker.
If you're entertained, we'll be entertained, and learning.
i preferred the distortion before the DejaVibe....the distortion was a wee bit smoother and the stereo split was better.
Great video. Never thought of using it like that. I am interested in using a delay into a crunchy distorted amp. I have a Dunlop Echoplex that is very tape like but it is still tough to get the delay level just right in a crunchy amp with out it sounding like garbage.
Thanks
Dear Wampler;
Why did you not have the stereo effect pedal go into 2 drive pedals?
Awesome channel. Tonebenders vs Fuzz Faces. Also, shoegaze pedalboard.
Here’s one regarding the compressor questions:

Thanks for this trick
Cheers
i put an overdrive before all effects then 1 after and it really brings it all to life just try it
I put my vibe between dirt pedals. Fuzz into vibe into distortion.
Yes.
Both ways sound good. After dirt, more chewy, smooths out the distortion some. Before dirt, you'll hear the hair from teh overdrive more.
