In my experience, it's usually the third album that's a head-scratcher. For an artist's first album, it's new. When we listen to that album, all those emotional nuances -- whether they're acknowledged, or not -- are with us. And that's special. For a second album, an artist can fall back on what worked with the first. It may be good, but it's not 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭, because it's not new. For the third, the artist has to do something different, lest they be called stale. That's where things get tricky. How do you be yourself and be different? A lot of artists fail that test.
the sophomore jinx is not exactly about the great artists, but more about which artists will have longevity and which ones won't. You gave some great examples of artists who have stood the test of time, so it makes sense that their sophomore albums were not flops. In fact, I'd take it a step further and say that a lot of artists who last in the industry tend to get better with each album. my favorite examples are Common's Ressurection, The Fugees' The Score and Ghostface Killah's Supreme Clientele However, there are plenty of artists who came out with smash debuts but never quite reached that same success again and we don't hear from them very often. my examples of this are Souls of Mischief who dropped No Man's Land which was crippled by sample clearance issues, but they also went independent and never dropped another major release Then you got a group like Black Moon who's second album actually charted better than any other album they released, but it was such a change in style and sound, the album did not receive the praise they got from their debut. Again, it's more of a longevity thing. Even though they're still around, they didn't reach the heights of other artists and that's why it's called a jinx because it's hard to recover from that.
Twista’s “sophomore” album was actually called “Resurrection” which coincided with Common’s (Sense) album of the same name. Not sure if it was officially released, but I have the promo cassette and vinyl which contains the incredible track “Suicide” where Twista goes after Treach, The Beatnuts and Del the Funky Homosapien. Those promos offer a glimpse of what was to come later on as he altered his style.
One of the best examples is Scarface. Mr. Scarface is Back and The World is Yours. Both albums are really good. Both went gold. What sets them apart is He's Dead. One of his best tracks.
Heltah Skeltah: Magnum Force,Smith & Wession:Rude awakening Antoinette:Burning at 20 below Large Pro: First Class,Above the Law: Black Mafia Life ( I know some of y’all like this album but this album was wack compared to living like hustlers to me as my opinion)Three times Dope: Live from acknickulous Land: The Doc:Helter Skelter Should I go on cause there’s lot more
In my opinion, yes. "Tha Doggfather" didn't really hit, and to me, it's just a mundane and disappointing listen. Time and nostalgia makes it sound better NOW, but yeah, it was a fall-off that continued with "Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told."
Neither a jinx, nor a myth...the data exists, it's just a matter of agreeing upon the metrics being used. For example: DJ spins, sales, etc... How many albums debut? Out of that, how many have a 2nd? and so forth. Nailing down what is "better than the 1st", with more precision. Having said that, I think the term is another type of catchy phrase, like "one hit wonder", so maybe that lends it some creditability...if the pressure of being a 1 hitter, creates the sophomore jinx. Even though song & album aren't the same. Similar to the mind tricking itself with "ufo" because, when you ask someone what that is...9 of 10...the response is "alien"...but, the first letter represents the word "unidentified", so saying it's an alien, is declaring it's been identified...just my take. Great video! BDP came to mind, as another one that wit fit in there.
And what about Freshman Flop This means a person first album is highly anticipated but once it’s released it’s a horrible sounding album musically and sale wise
Great video! I strongly disagree wit Outkast being the best group of all time. They can't fade Run-DMC or Whodini music wise or show wise. Outkast is still a great group but can't put them over the other two for several reasons without them there is no Outkast or any group who came after them.
Actually, I agree. America's Most Wanted is Cube's first and possibly, finest outing.
87 to 94 is rap's best period IMHO

Common, OutKast, Mobb Deep, ATCQ, De La Soul, Redman put out some of the best work as their 3rd album.
@@gaylordfocker7990 Yup, and Pac's 3rd, "Me Against the World," is his best, in my opinion.
@@gaylordfocker7990 Public Enemy and Run-DMC as well.

I was under the impression that the “Sophomore Jinx” meant that an artist’s second album couldn’t outdo the first
