      Or E.G.G for short.

    • @Unit-3D
      @Unit-3D 4 года назад +45

Sorcerer+Warlock is the foundation of the bullshit "Coffeelock" setup, which specifically requires the following:
1: Either Divine Soul as your Sorcerous Origin (So you can access the Cleric spell list, specifically Cure Wounds and Lesser Restoration, but there are other good spells there.) or less obnoxiously, a race that requires shorter Long Rests such as Elf or Warforged.
2: A DM naive or ignorant enough to not see where you're going with this until it's too late.
Essentially, you cash in your Warlock slots for Sorcery points, and then re-convert them into temporary spell slots up to 5th level, though 3rd and up are less and less efficient in terms of point expenditure. Instead of ever taking a Long Rest, you just chain Short Rests while repeating this conversion trick to amass more and more temporary spell slots, casting Cure Wounds to substitute for hit dice and Lesser Restoration to remove exhaustion.
If your DM has flat-out forbidden taking Divine Soul Sorcerer with Warlock, you can still do this to an extent by playing an Elf or Warforged and taking extra Short Rests while you wait for the rest of the party to wake up. This is basically the Decaf Coffeelock, since you'll still lose your temporary spell slots at the end of the day when you Trance or use Sentry's Rest, but it might still be banned depending on your DM's specific policies regarding Warlock spell slots.

@@jean-michaelbreton9851 The strength of Barbarian 2 / Fighter X is that those 2 levels in Barbarian really make use of the Fighter main features such as Action Surge.
You can do the contrary and be a Fighter 3 / Barbarian X. Go for the Champion subclass to have an expanded crit range. By level 9, Barbarians get Brutal Critical. It scales at level 13 and at level 17 (coincidentally, the capstone of this character). Possibly be an Half-Orc with the Orcish Fury feat, and your critical hits will be MASSIVE. Expecially when you get to reroll bad rolls with Great Weapon Fighting. Even the Savage Attacker feat gets strong when you're rolling so many dice for a critical hit.
I could get mathematical and calculate the crit chance of every turn doing 2-3 attacks (depending on the subclass) with Reckless Attack but I won't. I can assure you they become pretty frequent and they will make the difference. Just be sure to use a Greataxe with all those crit features.
And even when you're not critting, you're still a character that has a short-rest win button in the form of Action Surge. You still have your Rage which really makes you sturdier and withstand Reckless Attack. If you want to take this to the extreme, be a Berserker Barbarian and go in Frenzy. Frenzy is pretty underrated btw, you only need to use it wisely. The other Berserker features are pretty strong too.

Start your rage to get resistance to all damage, shift into a brown bear and then just start biting and clawing, all while just absorbing damage like a sponge. I intend to pick druid spells that focus more on interacting with animals, which is great thematically and mechanically for barbarians.

Ben but mechanically, depending on what archetypes you chose for each and every class, some might not have any synergy between them and might even conflict with each other and cause balance issues. However, I can’t argue with the high AC and HP. Ask your DM if they can make a solo homebrew campaign with this feature because with this mechanic, only one player is needed and that’s the entire party. D&D is not just a game, it’s a story and to have the ability to be a broken version of Abserd is to make the presence of other characters in specialised roles absolutely obsolete. That doesn’t make for a good story. Also, if you were to take on a lvl 20 Mystic, you’d be even more broken than you already were. A pure lvl 20 Mystic is broken enough as is.

Here's the thing about multiclassing... don't feel bound to roleplay your individual classes. A class *can be* just a collection of abilities and influences, and your actual class can be the combination of those, from a roleplaying standpoint. For instance, I made a Long Death Monk/Bladesinger Wizard who was a blood mage... his fighting abilities were expressed both by his martial arts skills and his spell selection. I've made a Conquest Paladin/Shadow Sorcerer who's a Lord's Alliance enforcer... she uses her fear and mind control abilities from her sorcerer spells to augment her paladin abilities, but I don't think of her as a "Conquest Paladin/Shadow Sorcerer", I think of her as an emissary who's sent by the Lord's Alliance to either get young nobles to get back in line, or replace them with someone who will. The overall combination of classes is really your character, not each individual class. So maybe your paladin warlock is *just* a warlock, but some of the powers he gets from his pact are expressed by paladin abilities.

That's right! We don't have to be so dogmatic about individual classes. Multi or combined classes can simply represent a completely different kind of character. It's always best to communicate well with the DM & iron out the details. We did this with my Order of the Weave Paladin, who is not lawful & did not technically follow Mystra in the beginning. My favorite multiclass in general is wjat I called the “hellsmith”
It is a multiclass between armorer artificer and fiend warlock with at least two levels in the latter; unfortunately the artificer is just that good so there are good motivations to keep on taking levels
You start with 3 levels in artificer and your infusions should include Enhanced Arcane Focus, Enhanced defense and Enhanced weapon (use Enhanced defense if there isn’t any other tank, otherwise the attack is fine) and then remember to take the armorer subclass
You’ll then need to take 3 levels in warlock, I used the fiend but if your dm is fine with letting your already infused blade also be your warlock hexblade you will be just as good (And I mean with the Hexblade warrior feature you get at lvl 1)
Take the blade pact since to turn your infused weapon (which is now magical) into your pact weapon and have the hexblade warrior bonus as well
Now you only have to decide how much you want to take from each class, artificers have good motivations to get to level 9 as you’ll be able to get 2 infusions for your armor, enhance your melee weapon even more and enhance a staff or whatever you choose to get a bonus for your eldritch blast
If you also get 10 levels your most important bonuses will double in effect and you’ll get 2 extra infusions you can do
Best race to play this is probably the warforged and the best feat imo is the heavy armor master and dual wielder for melee and a +1 ac.
Ironically, despite the artificer being the most important of the two classes, your cha modifier and the con modifier should be on top of your list followed by intelligence (and I am not sure about the importance of the other 3 tbh, try complimenting the party on that part)

My all-time favorite character was a straight Human Fighter, two-handed sword super-specialist. My GM would get so mad because he built what he thought was a tough encounter and I killed it in under three rounds, he'd be going "Jesus! How are you doing that much damage???" THIS IS WHAT I DO!! I made a triple-class once: Aasimar Paladin/Sorcerer/Warlock (taking Vengeance, Divine Soul, and Celestial Patron respectively) In an RP sense, I like to think it's the same celestial deity providing you each class. You make a pact with a deity (Warlock), it bestows part of its soul onto you (Sorc), and then you swear an oath to enact vengeance in their name (Paladin)
Mechanically, it's a combination of the first two builds listed in the video. The Divine Smite spam is real, and if you somehow run out of spell slots, you can spend Sorc points for even more. Paladin fighting style can either be the +1 AC if you want to be tankier, or Great Weapon FIghting for damage.
At 8 character levels (2 Pally/3 Sorc/3 Lock), you have a good balance of:
-ranged spellcasting (beefed up Eldritch Blast or Sacred Flame from your celestial patron at range, can do the Eldritch Gatling Gun)
-melee (Divine Smite spam, but you can also take some of the "blade" cantrips from Sword Coast Adventurer's guide, such as Booming Blade, as a Sorc. Also the Channel Divinity available to Vengeane helps in boss fights, and Pact of the Blade)
-protection (16 base AC with the starter chain mail, can be boosted by taking FIghting Style Defense as a Paladin, as well as access to both the Shield spell through Sorc *and* the Shield of Faith spell through Paladin.
-healing (Lay on Hands from Paladin, Healing Light from Warlock Patron, and access to Cure Wounds spell).
From that point, go up to 5 Paladin levels for Extra Attack, 3 Warlock for the Pact, and the rest of the levels into Sorc for extra Sorc points and spell slots for more smiting fun. If you don't want to be *as heavily into melee*, you can forgo extra attack and do 4 each for Paladin and Warlock levels for an extra ASI or Feat. Good feats to take with this are: Martial Adept, Heavy Armor Master, Tough, Alert, Spell Sniper, Savage Attacker.
The Aasimar race is mostly there for RP reasons, though the CHA bonus is legit. Basically I made Imperius from the Diablo series. That said, the 3rd level racial transformation gives you a nice aura, you are resistant to necrotic and radiant damage, and you get a little more healing.

As a Lore Bard with a single level in Life Cleric (in a campaign going since 2016) I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that this is an insane combination.
    Heavy armor proficiency
    Disciple of Life feature
    3 Cleric cantrips
    Bless and Cure Wounds
All the skills and expertise from bard cause you're literally only losing the Bard's famously crappy capstone.
Also Additional Magical Secrets is broken as hell and it lets you take Aura of Vitality (which continually activates Disciple of Life) at 6th level. We're level 16 and (20d6)+50 healing is STILL hugely worth it for a single 3rd level slot.

One of my favourite early game multi classes is fighter-wizard. At 1st level, you go fighter, take defence fighting style, heavy armor, and a shield for 19 AC, and then putting 2 or more levels in War Magic Wizard so you can arcane deflection or shield spell each time you’re attacked for 21-24 AC at level 3, which is basically invincibility to anything besides a nat 20

You can go arcane cleric and make due with medium armor. If you have a +2 DeXx you end up with 1 less armor than plate but you don't need the str requirement for plate. 19 armor with shield spell + war caster armor abilities is nice plus you don't lose a spell slot over the multi class.

If your DM is pretty lenient with purchasing spell scrolls and you don't already have a cleric in your party, a wizard + 1 level of Knowledge Domain Cleric can essentially let you cast any cleric spells from scrolls with expertise in Arcana and a naturally high INT. Plus with something like a Divination or Order Of the Scribes Wizard you could play a really cool lorekeeper character who collects knowledge for their diety.

Best moment was the only ever failed “what the hell is that?” roll; my second session we encountered a monster that used to be a friend that was corrupted by some power. “Do I know what it might be?…. Natural 1.”

His successor was a Rogue with a crazy dex-modifier, and cemented my love of rouges, and my fixation with a few levels of rogue fitting into almost every build that isn't aiming for 9th-level spells.
The thing i like most about 5th edition is the fact that Rogue is more functional now that every monster isn't immune to sneak-attack.

Going along with a paladin RP tip I read recently: Your Oath is the goal. Your ideals are the means. If your ideals allow you to make pacts with eldritch beings, then you can create some truly fun character concepts. It might not be as mechanically optimal, but imagine an oath of vengeance and making a pact with a fiend that you (or more realistically your order) managed to enslave and use against other fiends for a fire vs fire mentality. That's sorta how I would go about creating an Order of the Profane Soul Bloodhunter using official material from WotC.
You can make a pretty fun albeit edgy faction out of this. Picture a rogue faction within the church so dedicated to the war against the infernal enemies of the faith that they specialize in enslaving lesser devils that are powerful enough to grant warlock powers. With such a fire vs fire mindset, you can imagine them need water as protection against the burns. This would quite literally involve an annual bath in holy water that actually hurts the paladin quite significantly due to the corruption of the infernal magic.

I am currently running two extremely fun low/mid level multiclasses:
An Arcane Trickster Rogue / Trickery Domain Cleric. With that combination, you have the potential to use your INVISIBLE Mage Hand from 150 feet away with Invoke Duplicity. It also becomes extremely hard to lock down in combat with high natural AC from being a Rogue (so you obviously have high dex), and then combine it with the Cleric spells Sanctuary and Mirror Image (Trickery Domain) and combine those with Rogue Evasion/Uncanny Dodge to become a fairly unique tank for the party, while also being incredibly useful in non-combat related deeds with Charm Person, Disguise Self, and your long range invisible mage handing. Unfortunately for the combination, it is very reliant on high stats.
Second is a Circle of the Land Druid / Archfey Warlock. You need at least 3 levels in Druid and then whatever in Warlock -- but add in Magic Initiate, Pact of the Tome, and the Book of Ancient Secrets Eldritch Invocation (I also run Beast Speech for the added Druid Flavor and free Speak with Animals) -- with this combo you can have 10 cantrips (including Eldritch Blast), plenty of spells that don't require spell slots (Magic Initiate 1/day cast, a Ritual book, free Speak with Animals / eventually Detect Magic with Eldritch Sight)...and then because of the Druid and Warlock spell lists, you get access to a ton of Support-related spells. Add in Alchemist's proficiency and enough downtime, or eventually the Healer feat and you're the ultimate support character.

Something I didn't see you mention, which is key to the first build, is that if you keep your invoked duplicate next to you and the monster you're fighting you get advantage on your attack, which as a rogue means you get sneak attack. It's a built-in sneak attack guarantee.

Haven’t watched the video yet... but my favorite multi class character I’ve ever made was a half orc Barbarian Zealot/Vengeance Paladin. Only took 3 levels of Paladin so I could use smite while raging for my god Gruumsh. Really felt great playing a lawful evil religious warrior. The theme just meshed so well that even if it wasn’t “the most powerful thing ever” the whole table loved it. He was the most powerful party member, just not the most powerful multi class option I’ve seen. I made this character immediately after getting Xanathars guide and it is my go to character for one shots and new groups now haha.

Arcane Trickster 3/Wizard X. The ability to disengage, step away from pressure, and line up a devastating AoE spell is incredibly useful. You get a decent spell repertoire even though your Wizard-self is three levels behind, and your spell slots are only two levels behind because 3 levels of Arcane Trickster count as one full caster level. The extra spells known don't hurt either, because you can keep the 1st-level utility spells you never drop, like Shield, and spend those Wizard preps on higher level spells. You still get 9th level spells at the top end with a 3/17 split, although very late. You get proficiency with rapier, and I (as DM) extend that to cutlass and khopesh as well, since they're all d8 Finesse weapons. You also get Light armor proficiency, which is only really useful if you can find enchanted armor once you have Mage Armor as an option (but it's always on and not dispellable).
The way I imagine such a character is that they start out in a poor social class, such that they are unaware of their arcane (INT-based) talents, and it's really only after becoming an Arcane Trickster at level 3 that someone says "hey bud, you're in the wrong line of work" and they take up wizardry. Start with a 14 DEX, but since your first ASI won't come until after your class change, you have a plot-viable reason to dump all your ASIs into INT, which you should also max out at creation even though it won't help until level 3.
Then there's the Veo way (ranger-turned-rogue) of course, with ranger being one of the more blatantly front-loaded classes and rogue being another. This cuts down on the "awkward phase" because you have something useful coming online at every level. I personally have a "master blaster" human variant who started with Crossbow Expert, took four levels of Gloom Stalker, took the Sharpshooter feat, one more level of Ranger (5 total) and has been on an Assassin path ever since. I call this "master blaster" because that's his battle plan, every battle: heavy crossbow at -5/+10, outside of "must make" shots. Melee weapon? That's why he took Crossbow Expert. Aside from switching to variant human for the immediate Feat, he was deliberately modeled after Veo as she existed several levels ago, but taken to the extreme. He's exceptionally effective at dealing damage in practically all situations, but he makes a better NPC than PC because it's a very one-dimensional build.

So what I’ve dubbed “The Stalker”, is a 5/5 split in Rogue and Ranger as what I feel the peek of the dip. You continue in Rogue to boost your damage afterwards. I would say this build can be “active” as early as 4 Ranger/3 Rogue but we get Extra attack a 5th Ranger and another d6 to Sneak Attack at 5th Rogue.
You are starting Ranger as it makes sense for roleplay, equipment, etc and you’ll dip after 4th or 5th level. Your only concern is Extra Attack here on which one. You won’t get Extra attack until your character is 8th level otherwise. The extra attack gives you a minor buff to your damage every turn but if you don’t mind the lower damage (approx. 17 less dmg every turn) then honestly just wait as you can get Sneak Attack a level early this way for those shorter campaigns.
I’m going to use Point Buy to generate stats, I’ll also show Standard Array. If your DM or you wants to roll stats, use this as a guide for where to place the stats.
      Point Buy
      Dex 15
      Wis 15
      Con 14
      Str 10
      Int 8
      Cha 8
      Standard Array
      Dex 15
      Wis 14
      Con 13
      Str 12
      Int 10
      Cha 8
Dex is out attacking stat, for initiative, and for stealth. Wis is for skills like perception, survival, nature, etc. and spells. Con is for saves for concentration spells. Str is made moderate only because climbing up to perches may happen a bit and athletics in general for flavor of being this character. Int really shouldn’t be dumped if you don’t care about min-maxing, you are a planner and tactician seeing the fight from vantage. Cha is dumped. Not much use as one who likes to be in the shadows and unnoticed in the background.
      Race:
I’m a fan of the Variant Human +1 Dex +1 Wis and the Sharpshooter feat. This feat is important and getting it quickly let’s you be the sniper from game one as well as leaving room for more ASIs and possibly feats. If it’s really not what you want, make sure it boost Dex. Something with a speed boost or archery boost could be nice too.
Since I’m doing Variant Human in my example build, I will have Sharpshooter. It’s brilliant -5 to attack (easy to mitigate later) but +10 to damage will be a huge well for the damage, especially when we generate more attacks. You also ignore 3/4 and 1/2 cover which is nice and no disadvantage beyond 150 ft gives that sniper feel to the max. Both of these also help avoid making your rolls harder as you won’t be as accurate and we just can’t have that as a sniper.
      Ranger
We are starting with Ranger 5 for my example. I would like to note, for those who are in a hurry to be single shot hero or have shorter campaigns that make having this build be active at level 7, you make consider stopping at Ranger 4. I will say, however, we will not come back for that level until level 8 and will be missing (1d8+15) every turn until then.
My recommended picks for proficiency are Stealth, Perception, and the third is your choice. I will go with Survival.
All I care about is the Longbow in equipment. Pick what you feel like for the rest.
Spellcasting - An important boost to damage and action economy is the Spell Hunter’s Mark. What could be handy is another bonus action spell that is non concentration to keep up the action economy.
Favored Enemy - Talk with your DM. Maybe they’ll tell you what’s likely to come up the most. If it’s unclear or they won’t say, some common defaults are Humanoids (I will pick humanoids as they are easy to one shot later and I enjoy the true assassin sniper character) or Monstrosities. However, use common sense. If your campaign is called “Exploring the Crypts of the Undead Legion”, maybe Undead is a better choice. The tracking part is nice if you are looking for them or they try to escape. No one leaves your grasp.
Natural Explorer - Advantage on initiative rolls and advantage on those who haven’t acted yet are our big pickups. The navigating perks are good flavor for the character. Check them out.
Fighting Style - Archery +2 to ranged attacks to help offset the -5
Primeval Awareness - with Favored Enemy tracking and this along with your speed and range, running will not be an option for them.
      Ranger Conclave: Gloomstalker
Now we are really cooking with gas.
Dread Ambusher - Wis mod to initiative rolls (remember you also have advantage from a while back), +10 speed on your first turn, and additional weapon attack this turn with +1d8 to the damage.
Umbral Sight - Darkvision 60ft (+30ft if you already have it). Not even darkness can protect your prey and if they rely on Darkvision to see you, you are invisible which helps with Sneak Attack later.
ASI - +2 Dex or Sharpshooter if you did not choose Variant Human. This is the point where Variant Human outpaces the others as they also have a good feat option: Alert. Alert not only avoids your surprise but gives +5 to initiative. Being first before all enemies is very key. I will take it as it synergizes too well.
(We are at Ranger 4, go to Rogue levels if you are dipping here)
If you are sticking around for Ranger 5, you get Extra Attack from Gloomstalker.
      Rogue
Expertise - I will grab Stealth as it’s very crucial and Perception but that last one honestly could be anything.
Sneak Attack - A big part of dipping Rogue. We will get a big synergy buff later to make this even stronger.
Cunning Action - Dash to get to your perch, Disengage if they managed to get to you, Hide if you need to generate Sneak Attack when you have no other way.
      Rogue 3
      Sneak Attack is now 2d6
Assassinate - The last big boost. Advantage on those who haven’t taken a turn in combat yet. Really great for Easy first round sneak attack as you probably are going before anyone at this point. The second big whammy is if you managed to sneak up and surprise them. Your hits are all critical hits.
I’d jump back and get Ranger 5 now as it’s a bigger boost than your ASI that comes next.
Back to Rogue to get to Rogue 5
ASI - +2 Dex for some this is their first boost. For others, you’ve maxed Dex if you are Variant Human with no Alert Feat.
Uncanny Dodge - Half damage against you from an attack as a reaction. Those who try to even contest you in range will have their work cut out.
      Sneak Attack - Now +3d6
      Let’s tally up:
      Initiative is 4 (Dex) + 3 (Wis) + 5 (Alert) = +12 with advantage.
Odds are you can choose anyone for your first attacks.
      Bonus Action: Hunter’s Mark
(Assassin makes them crits if you surprised them)
You have advantage on all the attacks with 2 (Archery) + 4 (Dex) + 4 (prof) - 5 (Sharpshooter) = +5 to attack with advantage
      Attack: 2d8 (Longbow crit) + 6d6 (Sneak Attack crit) + 2d6 (Hunter’s Mark crit) + 10 (Sharpshooter) + 2 (against Favored Enemy) + 4 (Dex) = 2d8 + 8d6 + 16
      Range of Dmg: 26-80
      Avg: 53
      Bonus Attack (Dread Ambusher): 2d8 (Longbow crit) + 2d8 (Dread Ambusher crit) 2d6 (Hunter’s Mark crit) + 16 = 4d8 + 2d6 + 16
      Range of Dmg: 22-60
      Avg: 41
      Extra Attack: 2d8 (Longbow crit) + 2d6 (Hunter’s Mark crit) + 16 = 2d8 + 2d6 + 16
      Range of Dmg: 20-44
      Avg: 32
      Total Range: 68-184
      Total Avg: 126
      This is the first turn.
For comparison here are some CR 10 (the level you and your party would be by now) monsters’ average hp
      Aboleth 135
      Deva 136
      Guardian Naga 127
      Stone Golem 178
      Young Gold Dragon 178
      Young Red Dragon 178
Now, many of these can’t be one shot on average but all have a chance. Keep in mind that many encounters have weaker targets and your ability to snipe them out from the get go is a huge help for the party. Also, by the time everyone goes, I doubt it’ll last much longer. Try not to abuse it on the bosses too much or the DM may feel the need to make the fights harder, nerf your play directly (honeslty a poor sport choice but it happens), or inhibit you like give high initiative boosts to bosses or force you to fight in a small box where they can close the gap. Your own weakness is that you have little to avoid being touched (consider spells that could help you with this fault, I don’t know if there are for Ranger but you have spells to spare as Hunter’s mark is really the only essential one).
The Avg drops to 43.5 beyond turn one but can be brought up to 87 if you generate a crit through surprise using sneak (especially in darkness with Umbral Sight) and Assassinate Sneak Attack. However, your advantage goes away after the first turn if you don’t generate it back. Remember that Sneak Attack damage can work every turn if your melee party members are fighting the enemy.

The "Death Charger" of mine was for an evil campaign that I jumped into and was very happy with the *Niche I play on the team.

I'm playing a Artificer battlesmith + scout rogue and man does that synergize well.
Battlemaster pet gives your long range shots sneak attack so you don't need to rely on team mates.
And the skills.. haha all the skills

When Baldur's Gate 3 comes out, I'm gonna be "Soradin," (that actually sounds better out loud than in my head), a Paladin/Sorcerer. Two levels in Paladin to get Divine Smite, then five levels in Sorcerer for Fireball, Quicken Spell and Empowered Spell, then three more levels in Paladin for Extra Attack, hitting the level cap for that game at launch. Basically, I'll fire off a 4th level Fireball, using Empowered Spell to make it stronger AND Quicken Spell so it's a Bonus Action, then use my Action for two attacks, using Divine Smite on each hit. Yeah, it burns through most of my Sorcery Points and Spell Slots, but hey, it makes a helluvan entrance!

@@robertenyart9883 Nothing so far. The game was still capped at lvl 4 last I checked and they didn't have Sorcerer or Paladin unlocked.
Now, what I WOULD do then is just attack as normal, assuming anything was still alive.

One multiclass that is pretty good as well is a paladin rogue. You get sneak attack and smite together for the big damage, and I think the classes create a great backstory/gameplay. Auto crits too

The Fighter Assassin has one extreme downside though: It creates an adversarial climate between you and the DM where you try to surprise everyone all the time and the DM tries to reign you in. Boy are you gonna be pissed when you reach the climax and the DM just says "No, sorry. The Dragon is not surprised by any of this"

This is a regular problem with a lot of the "control freak" DMs. They aren't really freaks but just people who can't imagine rogues sneaking in a LOT of situations that are clearly within the rules for stealth. So, they regularly "logic" party foes, NPCs, etc. into detecting everything all the time because "it's just normal in this world."

I'm enjoying a Drunken Master/Inquisitive mulitclass. High wisdom gives both AC and Insight bonuses which means practically never ending Sneak attack damage and the ability to never worry about having a weapon or armor. He can go pretty much anywhere without drawing the attention of Guards. Plus the extra movement comes in very handy at times.

I made this combo also but after two sessions my dm wouldn't allow me to play it anymore since both my passive perception and passive investigation was above 25 and nothing got by me. yes I made him a Sherlock Holmes/Psych style character.

My favorite multiclass is Fighter/Wizard or Fighter/Sorcerer, for one simple reason: Double fireball.
Though you could also use the action surge to set up something like casting a concentration spell, then using another spell that combos well with it.

I thought I was really clever when I discovered the Polearm master Battlemaster/Elk Totem Warrior. You can apply tripping attack or menacing attack to your opportunity attack to prevent an attacking enemy from ever reaching you. And even if you miss your opportunity attack, you're still raging. Absolutely broken.

1 level dip starting as Artificer and then progressing into Wizard for the rest of it gets you a lot. CON saving throws, medium armor/shields, Guidance, Faerie Fire and Cure Wounds, and for spell progression Artificers round up when being calculated as a half-caster for multi-classing.
