I liked the explanation this guy gave in the video as to why Selena spoke the way she did because of her character. They explained it in the movie, so I don't understand why Eugenio Derbez spoke so badly about Selena. He should support actors of his own ethnicity and Selena is trying to connect with her culture. So why tear her down with comments like the one he made? I understand that he has the right to express his opinion, but there are other ways to say what you feel without hurting others in the process.

I'm chicano I couldn't speak spanish well because I was raised in the U.S. even tho I have Mexican parents. Selena was raised in the U S too. So I understand why she can't speak Spanish fluently. That's why she was picked for this movie. If they wanted a spanish fluent speaker they would have picked someone else.

I'm bilingual and she did a horrible job. Foreigners learning Spanish as a second language, would understand what they themselves are saying at the very least. She talks like she's reading something she's never seen before. It's not just the accent. The words blend together in such a way that it's impossible to tell where they start and where they end. Ana de Armas learned English in 4 months but Selena can't at least figure out a few words in Spanish This is privilege Habla como si estuviera leyendo algo que nunca ha visto antes. Look, I love Selena with all my heart but I watched both the movie and the interview and he wasn't critizising her accent as much as her acting, which did come off lazy on the screen. Not saying she was actually being lazy, because yes, she might have been going through a hard time and that was her best at the moment, but just from watching the movie, without the love lense we usually view her through, she can and has done so much better in other projects. Another thing is yes, an accent is more than expected, but I will be honest and say non American Latinos had a bigger issue with the lines more than the accent. One of the reasons was the Director's lack of interest in the country he was "portraying." He literally said he never has and never will visit Mexico and did not need any more research than what he already knew from the "news." I understand holliwood creatives get to act snobbish, specially after a successfull project, but in all honesty, this time, the lack of research, knowledge or even interest showed and it affected Selena more because she was the one acting under his direction. The language barrier went further than the accent in itself, and it could've been solved by hiring a spanish speaking writer for the lines in spanish. Slang, figurative language and colloquialism do not always translate. Therefore some of Selena's lines were something no one in Mexico, actually no one who ever spoke spanish would ever put together. This is because they used lines people commonly say when speaking French, only translated. Poor Selena got the short end of the stick here because she was given bad lines on top of whatever troubled her acting, which again, wasn't her best.
I can totally understand both parties as a native Spanish speaker raised in the United states. However, he talks a lot of shit. He is super dramatic and he has history of being a bitter Betty with one of his many mothers of one of his kids. All that to say his shade is not surprising.

The provlem is she doesn't speak spanish at all. Knowing a few words doesnt mean she speaks spanish. Becky G is also norn and race in the US but her Spanish is pretty good.
