Now that it's running, make sure you get Hammond oil and fill the litte cups on the top of the generator. They will drain when you fill them, so fill it to the top and let it drain out. A week later, do it to the funnels again. There is also a little tub for the run motor on the left side. Don't fill the tub, just get the sponge that sits inside it wet. It will wick down the cotton string to where it needs to go.

I recently have been working on my 1960 M3 after taking the organ out of storage after 20 years. This had the front cover still on it so the insides are very clean. Tube checked and replaced as needed amp tubes. Hammond oil to left cup for scanner and motor, both middle and right cups had three doses of filling cup, that was Friday night. Saturday checked and had some squealing bearings so I left it alone. Sunday night so two days later: tonight, I realized that some heat might get the oil to flow better. After ten minutes of going up and down the generator on the bottom side slowly back and forth, I started the organ and had NO SQUEEALING!! When I shut down the generator it ran for 16 seconds until it stopped. I imagine this might be rare? but if your organ is squealing give it some loving heat! Johnne in Clallam Bay, WA.

Never, I repeat NEVER use WD40 on anything as precise as a Hammond tone generator. Not only can it go sticky over time and attract excess dust, but it can also react with any existing oil and go hard, and prevent oil from getting to the places it is needed in the future. This goes for anything that you want to last a long time. Always try to spare yourself the headaches of damage and costly repairs by using the correct type of oil wherever possible. Hammond organ oil is readily available in many parts of the world (although clearly not where I live in the UK) and it is worth paying a small amount of money for the proper stuff in the long run. Sewing machine oil is also usually safe to use (despite the controversy, but I have been using it for many years now without a problem) provided the right type is used. I find the best is that of an industrial grade because it doesn't contain any of the additives such as zinc particulates which can clog up the cotton wicks in a tonewheel generator. Singer oil generally does contain such additives, and this is why I never use it.
At the end of the day, If you are able to purchase the correct oil the you might as well do it. I only use sewing machine oil due to a lack of the correct type, and although I have been using it now for over 10 years, there is no telling as to the longer term effects.
Hope this is of some use :)

    Don't ever use WD40 !!
Singer sewing machine oil is the only allowable substitute but use only Hammond organ oil.

This point cannot be emphasized enough: Use Hammond Generator Oil.

Hi , i have an M3 as well it worked well many years ago then i put it in storage for 10 years and forgot about it . For the last year ive been filling the cups with hammond oil . The start motor works but the organ squeals then i hit the run switch while still holding the start and it comes to a stop. Two questions how did you lift the tone generator to oil underneath and how did you finally get your run motor going? Please ive been at this for over a year and yours is the closet video i have found to getting mine running again. Thanks in advance and i know this is a lot to ask but i think it would help a lot of people if you made a detailed video showing those specific details .

Thats a problem with the tonewheels, whether you use it or not it needs to be oiled once a year and should run at least once a year.

Its nothing short of a miracle but my M3 started and ran last night just before i was ready to list it for sale. It took a long time to finally start 18 months . I was going to try WD-40 but i have seen many videos that say it collects dust and dirt so i didn’t do it but i was going to lift the tone wheel generator up and spray underneath but im glad i didn’t. Now that is started i will figure out how to hook up the leslie connection kit to my 760 leslie.

It’s important that you use Hammond oil. Using WD40 is NOT recommended. It may “instantly” get things spinning but it will damage the organ overtime. Hammond oil is to be used the way you are using the WD40. Also there are 3 important places that require the Hammond oil. It takes about 2 weeks for the oil to run down to all parts requiring it. The main oil pan is NOT to be filled to the top. Only the sponge needs oil. Hammond organs must be oiled 2x per year. Do not over oil to make up for past time. Too much oil will cause oil to build up and damage the parts (scanner). Also you may need a new start motor

@@goldstream5147 i did finally get it going . I did use hammond oil and not WD40. It took a year to get going not 2 weeks . I was ready to give up . I unbolted the tone wheel generator and physically turned some of the wheels with my finger then put it back down and it worked . I bought a new run and start switch but never used them . As i said i was ready to quit and put it up for sale but it came back alive . I also found out its from 1956 using the hammond online chart . So its an old one . Some of the draw bars are a little scratchy but i am using deoxit and deoxit fader cleaner and that will hopefully clean them up.

OMG. You didn't use original 1965 genuine Hammond oil? I couldn't take the whole organ, but I kept the tone generator. I used some gun oil I had on the table at the time. Doesn't do much by itself 🙂

The TG is held up by 4 springs. Detach them so the TG lays on the wood and do as he did - LOL - Use a Leatherman to prop it up.
