8:47 Actually that's a good thing you keep playing the same riff, it allows us to hear the differences between each pedals based on the same riff. It's a comparison, not a product demo. So it's all good!
that "tighter" sound is why i bought the sugar...i like the drive to tighten my following "real gain' - whether it be a pedal or an amp - predrives that add low end create mud (to me) in a mix situation. the tightness of the sugar puts the gtr in the mix where it belongs to my ears. the lowed may sound great listening all by yourself, but not in a mix situation. the ol' "bedroom tone vs pro tone" discussion.
+1 Sugar
These are all great. MXR pedals are under appreciated. Every amp should come with their 10 band EQ.
“All pedals are different, the knobs aren’t in the same place.” Profound!
Dude these videos are sick. I was spacing out researching pedals when I came across this channel, I did a double take. That's the cool dude I bought a pedal from at Alvas! I bought a ditto x2 from you like a month ago and we joked about no one being as passionate about loopers as they are overdrive. Good shit!
I liked the Mjolnir the best too! :)
Haha thats great. Hopefully I can get out there to do videos with you guys soon!
I played through a Mjolnir. Really impressed by that pedal. I also have a sneaking suspicion that it would pair beautifully with my Morning Glory.
I own a sugar drive, it was one of my first pedals and even though they may be some better klon clones out there I really love it. I use it as the last drive in my chain to just give everything that extra punch when needed, it is fantastic for that. It also is great value and takes up no space. I recently built my dream pedalboard with some nice pedals but the sugar drive is a good reminder that boutique isn't always better. Kingfish uses one aswell!
My preference based on this video would be Tmunus or the Sugar Drive but I would take any of these. This video only shows one setting for the drives, you can modify them to tailor the sound the way you want.
Thanks for the shoot out! Love these, they helped me choose a vibe pedal.
I appreciate you going through each one of these and honestly you are correct, you can’t really make a bad choice and it is personal taste. Great demo man!
To me the Tumnus blends in some dry signal together with the overdriven sound. That should be the reason why it sounds more bassy and defined. It's the best standalone drive of the 3 I had.
The Archer is on my board right now because I think it pushes other drivers better.
MXR is nice, but sounds a little harsh on the upper highs to my ears, it's a matter of taste. For solos it sounds amazing though.
All your videos are amazing man! Keep them coming!
The Sugar def also blends clean. It’s a stacked pot. And it also “power stacks” the 9V to 18v, as the Klon does
You did a really good job demoing these.
The Tumnus just sounds more natural and uncolored to me. Even at highest gain, you can still get the character of your clean tone. That’s what I’m looking for in a Klon pedal
Bro you have to match the potentiometers by ear. Noon on one might be 11 on another. All pots are different- you could get these sounding way more similar. Use your ears not eyes. The sugar drive needed more treble & volume at the beginning to sound like it actually does when compared to the others
3:33 you're welcome
Tummnus sounded fuller or more substantial.
The right way to compare pedals is to work with each one separately. Don't just put the knobs at the same setting for all of them. Each pedal is manufactured and calibrated differently. I recently compared two pedals and in order to get the volumes to match I had to set the volume at 9 o'clock one one pedal and 3 o'clock on the other one.
It would also be cool to hear these thru a Fender circuit.Thank You kindly
The Tumnus is considerably brighter than the other 3. Sounds good for RUclips but I would guess it would be a problem for me in person. Archer and Sugar sound most similar.
Great video. Like all the ones you do especially how you tell us your favorite. Thank you.
Great video I would love to see a follow on where you compare the winner of this one Mjolnir against the Wampler Tumnas Deluxe and the J Rocket Ikon (Gold). I was leaning to the Tumnas Deluxe because it has more flexibility in how you can adjust the sound, so get the Klon but not limited to just that Klon sound along, but I also liked the Mjolnir so would be interesting to see how far it takes you vs the Tumnas Deluxe.
I own the MXR and the Tumnus. I use the Tumnus for my crunch and the MXR second in the chain if I want more of a singing lead. They are both great pedals, the Tumnus is more versatile, and the MXR is a great pedal for the money.
Do these into high gain and see wich one remains the most clear
You keep playing the same riff so we can hear the differences and this is exactly the kind of riff I would like to hear when trying to figure out what a klon sounds like so yeah good job!
I had discarded Klon types since I bought my Sugar Drive because I couldn’t gel with it. Then yesterday I tried an Archer: oh man was I wrong! It shows that same circuit based pedals may differ A LOT in tone and feel. Whereas the MXR sounded stiff, honky with bass loss, the Archer sounded warmer, fuller and natural under the finger. Now I’m selling 3 of my best pedals so they can be replaced by that one.
They all are great pedals!!! I own the Archer en the Archer Ikon, and they both works for me! But the mxr sugerdrive is awesome too.. i am interesting in it!! Archer the winner for me.. the mxr sugerdrive a second winner!
Actually, I was A/B-ing the Sugar Drive and Mjolnir by clicking back and forth on the video. I felt that they sounded exactly the same during the Led Zeppelin riff. The Tumnus didn't sound transparent it added a little bit of color. I think you're right about the Mjolnir being the best but only because the Sugar Drive just seams a little starved for power. However, I don't think it matters because most people use the Klon to shape their tone by stacking it with other drive pedals. I personally would throw out the Tumnus based on what I heard in the video. #unpopularopinion
Great demo sir greetings from Bonnie Scotland
Is it just me? Or the clean tone sounds muffled like a blanket over your amp. So when regardless what pedal was engaged, sounds doesn’t get any better.
Was this recorded with a sleeping bag over the mic?
Thank U for the effort, but that amp sounds Ssooooooo dark...
Tumnus all the way.
Just got the Tumnus. I absolutely love it.
Great work here. Rock on! ☮️
The Mjolnir sounds best with Rhythm. The Tumnus has a lovely richness and sustain to it that for me, makes it the best sounding boost for leads. The Archer sounds really close to an actual Klon. So probably the best pedal if you just wanted to add it to a clean sound
Good demo! Only thing is that your pedal levels were all off. You mentioned that the Sugar Drive and the Mjolnir had more drive than the Tumnus but you had the Tumnus set at 25% gain while the other two were cranked up to 50. You also had the Mythos volume way down and the gain cranked when you compared to the tumnus and mentioned that the Mjolnir had more gain (tho it was because of your settings, not the overall feel of the pedal itself)
Also most people set up Klons and Klones with the gain almost at 0 and the volume and tone cranked a bit more. It would've been nice to see them compared with similar settings.
Idk why they didn't use a fender amp. That should be a standard for reviewing pedals . unless the pedal calls for a edge of breakup tone.
Mjulnir sounds like a distortion pedal
Cool comparison, all of them are great pedals. Did you consider using a Keeley Oxblood instead of the MXR?
Seriously? How is it in this day people are still using phone mics for Demos?
I think the Mjolnir and the Tumnus are the best Klon in this format. Or in any. Love em both
You should also try the Ceriatone and the RYRA versions, both are great
Tumnus wins for me. Clear not boxy like the others. Archer was 2nd
Where is the Mathews Architect?it is soo much better than most you show.
too much talk bro...
Tumnus is the winner.Archer is cut high freq, other is less dymanics and un-natural sound.
Whats the difference between these ovd pedals and a tube screamer like ts9?
So far I've come, the Tube screamer has less clarity, cuts more bass, boosts more mids, less dynamics.
all are ok, but for me, Mjolnir is the one I dislike...Archer and Taumnus a little bit higher
Great vid! Keep it up!
Good demo. The mic tone was so accurate as to what you'd hear in a room. Probably the best mic tone I've heard on a demo.
I liked this video man. Have a little more confidence in yourself man. It's clear to me that you are capable of doing some really killer videos in the future.
Archer sounds the best as a Klon but I really like the Mjolnir as a remixed Klon.
Third one. Mulenor
Archer is best.. however the Tumnus Deluxe is better than all of them (including the old Tumnus).. IMO.
Mythos the led is blinding. Wampler wins
Clones should be able to do treble sounds, I think they sound like crap when used bassy, I don't want (meat, low end, or "full end" from a klon..) Now honestly, I only have "klones" but I gravitate to the slight high EQ with my Friedman Dirty Shirley...And why is he only using the bridge pickup of a Tele.... Ick...... loosest bass tone ever.
Tumnus says my ears
Wouldn’t it make sense to have a real Klon or at least a KTR in the lineup as reference?
MaxPaws maybe they weren’t able to get a hold of one?
Alvas Music, was gonna say that to be snarky but turned out to be true!
if we could afford one yes
And now? My doubt, Sugar drive or J Rockett Archer?
Don't doubt it. Test them for yourself. If you want the Mjolnir drive because that's what this video is trying to sell, go for it. This video is total social marketing biased to one pedal, unfortunately.
Archer obviously!
Never seen a guitar strapped so high before.
Roy Buchanan...Scott Henderson...
@@pcollenyt3683 Yes, it may not look as "cool", but it's a lot more functional!
Tom Morrello
They all sound dark with no top end. Not my experience with that circuit. Tumnus is hard to beat overall.
that's just how he has his eq set on the amp + the tone knob not being turned to the max on each pedal
Nash Guitars are awesome . but most of their relics look like a 500$ relic guitar copy. I don't understand why they cost so much.
The Tumnus does that Klon thing the best ! It is such a shame that Wampler didn’t went for the look also. Such a shame that it looks like it does ! Archer looks so much better and it goes with the theme. Wampler lose a lot of clients to the Archer just becoes Tumnus looks like a Chinese pedal that has nothing to do with the Klone
with the blue LED on the side the MXR isn't true-bypassed....... Fail
When I tried the SugarDrive, it kept reminding me of the SoulFood.
I really like the Soul Food with the drive all the way off tho. I wonder how the JHS soul food is? I have Tumnus Deluxe and Matthews Effects Architect V2 that are My Goto Klons.
EHX Soul Food is also a clone circuit of the Klon Centaur
they sound the same
Must play notes'???? Wake up!
Тебе, браток, надо качнуть прессок. А не на гитаре пилить
You lost me by wasting time describing the guitar.
nice idea, bad audio quality
amp is too dirty to be objective
coolbean5 there’s no wrong or right but that’s actually the best way to test klon type pedals . Original klon is famous for boosting clipping amps and not as stand alone overdrive.
Actually that's what I want to know. How it can boost an already over driven amp.
this was a sort of demo video... NOT comparison...not really...admit it.
your base tone is awful and its out of tune
no lead tones, just basic chords? you really need more of a player to demo pedals to see what they are capable of.
will try
High road 👍
What a weapon
When the playing is so terrible they all sound bad….
You like the sound of your own voice too much. Have you ever watched successful channels review something? Zip it 🤐
Two words....... Gastric bypass
You're an asshole.
@@alexmurphy5289 Well said. I will add brain bypass at least
