i normally dont comment on youtube videos, but my god, i love your enthusiasm, i love how excited you are in here, and your physical feature kind of remind me of my passed father. i just placed my order on these brush because of you, lol. you got a new subscriber btw :D
Sweet, thanks for subscribing. I'm glad you like my enthusiasm. I Love Watercolors. They are incredibly fun to paint with and I want to share my love of them with the rest of the world...
So, you've had these for two and a half months now, how do you feel they've held up? I just watched your new video with the other set of quills, and just wanted to hear how you felt about these now after you've had some time to work with them. I want to try out a new set, and you can now complicated things more! Lol.... So, which do you prefer?
I have one 65 rpy #12 for quite some time now, and it is a solid performer. Just wish it were about 2" longer. Bought mine on Art Secret webstore on Aliexpress.
Love that place for many art supplies. I see so many of the same items in the stores here in USA for much higher prices. Plus, at Ali Express, it's almost always free shipping on any item, or a few pennies. The Winsor Newton tube Paints (big tubes, not small) from Ali Express, in the 24 tube sets are only abt $15 USD, sometimes a few dollars more, sometimes a few dollars less. They are lightfast and each tube has the lightfast info on them, and colors in English. They are far more vibrant than USA sold Winsor Newton Cotman's. Rumor has it there's a factory in China. They do wonderful for making custom palettes, too.
Thanks Michael!! I love my Quill brushes and have the DaVinci Casaneo as well as the Rafael Soft Aqua. I haven’t seen Erik Lundgren use anything but a giant quill - it’s amazing. I hope you enjoy your newcomers. :)
I bought some Da Vinci Petit Gris Pur quill brushes about 8 months ago and have been hooked ever since. Since I bought these, Ive gotten two other sets of them. I've got a set in the house, two in the studio and one at work. (yes, I really do have a problem.0
Watercolors With Michael LOL I know the addiction oh so well! I tend to stick to my Black Velvets and my two quills for the most part though ... but I’m still a beginner. 😜
I like the feeling of trying a new brush and seeing how it compares to the ones I've used in the past. I dunno, I might be a better painter if I just stuck with one set and used them over and over agian. But, some days one brush just ins't working for me the way I like, its nice to be able to grab a different one and give that a try.
Thank You for Your review. I was having some kind of visual problem so I listened and peeked instead. I actually saw that brand of brush on Amazon and decided to watch a few review videos. I didn't have to look because you were the number one recommended video. Again, Thank You very much for doing this video. Does anybody else have a visual problem because of the angle of the camera/video? It makes me kind of nauseous. It seems as if I'm almost looking at it slightly upside down. I just turned my phone around so that it is technically "upside downand" that view seemed "normal" and my nausea decreased. I'm not trying to start any trouble honestly. I just want to find really good brushes. : )
I'm sorry for any weird camera angle with this video. I was experimenting with different camera mounts and angles at the time I filmed this. I've got a new setup not and I think its much better. As for the brushes. If you want a budget set of quill brushes that works very nicely, you could do a lot worse than these. I've been using them for a while and quite like them (well, I like the two smaller ones better than the larger ones). This is more of a visual thing for me, rather than a brush performance thing.
These are great. Brushes like these are for sale for on Ali Express for $4 - $6 USD, and free shipping. Takes abt 10 days to 3 weeks directly from China but is worth it. I genuinely love your style. You have a rich, distinct style. I have some and they are incredible. They truly are. It's normal for brushes to have that special glue on them for shipment on new brushes to hold their shapes.
@@watercolorswithmichael Oh, once you try those, there's no going back! They are noticeably awesome brushes! One can tell the difference first time they try them.
i bought mine a 1 and 4 from AliExpress for like $8-$9 total o.o" if they arrive to my place in about 10-16 more days (shipping time is apparently around 25 days)
Thanks for the review! I might give those a try :) Another set worth a try: Escoda Ultimo. Completely synthetic squirrel that is thirsty, comes to a perfect point, you can get a set of 3 traveller brushes in a beautiful leather carrying case for about $60 American. I absolutely love the Ultimo brushes--I have compared them to my Rosemary & Co pure squirrel mop, and they actually perform better because the Ultimo aren't quite as soft and they come to a point--but they hold a TON of water and pigment! You'll probably find them cheaper on Jackson's Art Supplies than on Amazon, if you want to give the Escoda Ultimo a try :) (P.S. Don't be bedazzled by Escoda Perla. It's a white synthetic that looks gorgeous but quickly loses it's point and wants to soak up and hold pigment and water in the belly, rather than release it evenly. Which is a bummer. I totally wanted to like them, but I can't. I guess you can't always bat a thousand as an art supply craftscompany.)
I've seen plenty of people using the Escoda Ultimo brushes and have heard lots of good things about them. I'll definitely give some thought into trying them out. I just went through a little brush binge and should probably hold off for a bit (I have a sneaky suspicion my wife is counting the number of brushes that have been rolling through the house latley). I'll be curios to see how these brushes wear. So far so good, but in reality, much too soon to tell. Thanks for the advice on the Escoda brushes.
The Jackson's Raven quills are pretty nice synthetic quills on plastic handles and very good value, over 20 uk bucks the postage is free to just about anywhere. They carry a great paint/water load that just goes on and on, and point very nicely. So brush cravings are a real thing! I just got an enormous Chinese brush with a huge plastic ferrule and neat bamboo handle complete with capped end with hanging cord. It holds enough water to complete wet a largish sheet of paper, and looks splendid. I have no idea what the brush tip is made of, but it really works well, and cost next to nothing.
Do any of the hairs fall out over time since you have had them for a bit longer? That is my BIGGEST pet peeve and are they good for flowers because that is what I like to paint.
I lost a few hairs with these brushes at the beginning, but since, I've had no problems losing hairs. If you are painting in a loose style, these would be really good, but if you paint in a more tight fashion, these probably aren't the brushes for your flower paintings
Buy what you like. I've never tried any Raphael brushes. I hear they are fantastic. If you want a very nice, inexpensive quill mop brush, these will fit the bill.
Thanks for the video, Michael - I'm seriously impressed at how many brushes you've got past your wife recently without suffering some 'bumps on the head' LOL Although I've not used it yet, I did buy a squirrel mop recently, after seeing so many people demonstrating how it can do massive washes as well reasonably fine lines. Your video has got me thinking that maybe I should give it a baptism this weekend, with the start of World Watercolour Month. Regards, Brian.
Brian, Once I started using my squirrel mop brushes I was hooked. I do still use a round brush for details. i think this is what the mop brushes help me with. They take away my expectation of painting a copy of whatever I'm looking at, and allow me to focus on painting the form, or the essence of what it is I'm painting. With a round brush I always feel caught between trying to paint an exact copy and trying to be expressive.
I have 3 of the Princtoin Quill brushes. They are nice brushes. They don't come to a fine point at the tip. I've got a 4, 6, and 8, and they seem like they are really big. They definitely hold a ton of water. They are too big for the smaller paintings I've been doing. If i move to a half or full sheet of paper I'm gonna pull them back out and use them.
i normally dont comment on youtube videos, but my god, i love your enthusiasm, i love how excited you are in here, and your physical feature kind of remind me of my passed father. i just placed my order on these brush because of you, lol. you got a new subscriber btw :D

I’m hooked too, on paint as well!
Me too!
And meth!

I'm going to have to try that shammy thing! .^_^.
Brushes come with a sizing on top of the hairs pre sale thats pretty normal, be gentle whilst soaking or you will damage them straight away
They are great. I love mine!
Have you painted with these and do you have any posted videos? Thx. I'd like to see them in action...as they say.
the Korean brand they are really good quality with the price

I've never gone on Ali Express. Maybe I'll have to look in the future. I really like these brushes. They are a mainstay on my art table.

Did they say good?
Thanks for the review! I might give those a try :)

I am confused... buy Raphael soft aqua or this artsecret? 😖😖
Buy what you like. I've never tried any Raphael brushes. I hear they are fantastic. If you want a very nice, inexpensive quill mop brush, these will fit the bill.
does it flop?
did you just ask if this mop, flop? LOL

I love your channel so much. Thank you for sharing! God bless 😊 ✝️
You should first put them in warm water firsg to actually break off the glue that holds them
I did swizzle them around in water to loosen the glue first.
Thr Princeton Quill Brush is s good brush and is a very highly recommended brush. Dana

Leave 'em soak. Don't force them
