- I often judge a band by how badly I want to play bass in it. King Gizzard is at the very top of that list.
Lucas recently paid our shop a visit and we sat down to talk about his bass skills, KG's Microtonal Universe, socks, and more.
Enjoy!

Always appreciative of Lucas's interviews. Would love to see him jump down from his riser more often.
I second this! I recall him hoping down in Berkeley 2022 and was so pumped to see it!
He can jump down on my riser any time.
Desert Daze with the where's Stu dripping Tap
That bassline of Honey at the end is magnificent
the sticker on the bass made me really happy as a gay bassist :)
Dude's rock
Fantastic! My head explodes just looking at that microtonal fretboard!
Lucas is like the secret sauce for the Gizzard.
Yeah he's the MSG of the already delicious melting pot of Gizz
beginners luck was spot light for him
The mark of any true expert in their field (any field) is that they all know they don't really know anything...
This series is incredible! You have to get Mike Gordon and Johnathan Coleman on here!!
Gonna work on it!!
Its sick he mentioned Phil Lesh, definitely an underrated bass player with a unique style and tone
Great video. I'd noticed he was playing new basses this tour after so many years with Mustangs. These look really great.
Ha! he acts chill here but if you talk to them after a show when their adrenaline is flowing they are off the walls! Haha love this man and his band.
11:40 this is why I love Gizz. I'm a newb bassist at age 43, been playing only 4 years, and Gizz songs are so much fun to learn on because as they progress as musicians, so do I.
As a fellow newb, can you give me some fun songs to learn
@melz410 Amedeo S is the RUclips channel for you, I learned bass from his Gizz tabs.
Slow Jam 1 is the easiest. Hot water isn't hard, and fun! I spent hours grinding Horology at the start.
@@tonyloafpoundstone Omg hero, thanks!
@@melz410 if your still looking for a new piece you should try mars for the rich, tough but very rewarding to get done
@@mydrillasanjay5397 thanks, actually already learned it in the meantime. One of my favourites to play
The nuclear fusion bass line got me all 🗿🦅RAAHHHHH
LOVE this so much! Thank you so much for this, guys!!
Love the questions y’all asked Lucas. Really dig this interview!
Happy to hear from Lukey!
This band is incredible and I love that he uses Serek basses
You’re a legend Lucas!
Lucas is the real King of the group. Quiet and reserved but holds the bass line DOWN. Locked into a groove and marathons it!
Luke is a treasure! Love this band so much ❤🔥
Good stuff, Jake!
Lukey just seems so chill and nice
awesome interview. id love to try one of these basses some day
This is awesome, love hearing some behind the scenes from Lukey ❤️
What a cool, humble down to earth bloke - he is a way better player than he is giving himself credit for here
Eh, theory... Sounds good either way 😅
How did you manage to not show the fret board during Pleura ugh
One of the most humble people on the planet. We love Lukie
great video. Yall should get cameron picton next
Dang I need me one of those basses that looks really sick
Admit it: we ALL came here in the hopes of seeing 7:39
NUCLEEEAWAWAAAAAEAAARRRR FYUUUUSSSSIIOOOOOONNNYOYOYO
Love this band. Bass player of course, under rated.
"serek" means "little cheese" in polish
Indeed it does!
Lucas Harwoon, notorious tone poker! Best tone in the game
Thanks! Question: What kind of pickups did Phil Lesh use just prior to his Alembic? 😎
Fairly certain he was using BiSonics of the Hagstrom variety in both his Starfire and modded EB-3.
@@serekbasses Thanks!😎
The Drones rule!
Does his 4 string Midwestern have an ebony or rosewood fretboard? Tks
Static Electricity will always be my fav bass line
certified lukey moment
I love that band, and I love Midwestern basses
I love Lucas!! Harwood!
I've had the same recurring dream!! I'm on stage the band is counting down to the next song and I don't know what the song is ahahahah
Lukey is such a gem ❤ great interview!
this is an awesome series Jake! would love to see other Serek bass hero’s; Chuck Jones, Justin Coleman, Gordo to name a couple
Nice! Keep it going.
Curious how the B-string sounds with a short scale, passive pickup in neck position, and flats.
Seems to go against the “wisdom” of some bass players: 35”+ scale, bridge pickup, and rounds just to get the string to register in a mix.
LUKEEEEEYYYYYY
I have that same recurring dream about drumming 😂
Digging the new Armitage
you teased this so brilliantly. ive been so excited for this interview!
11:00 love this question, really struggling to find an answer better than Boston for me - that debut album is unreasonably good for a record made by one dude in the 80s
Hard to argue it's not one of the greatest albums of all time from any band, much less than one named after a city/state/country 😉
Hell yeah Lukey!
hell yeah! I don't play bass but I found this very interesting nonetheless. I've just begun dicking around trying to learn keyboard and that word of advice at the end was immensely encouraging. thanks ya'll!
Honesty, humility.
lukey !! we love you!!
MELTING
wholesome
one of my fav bass brands ever i hope to own one some day
5:36 😂
No le entendí ni verga te amo
I love Luke's playing, but his recent choice to stick to mellow vintage tones while the rest of the band voes metal means I can barely hear him in the mix.
I agree
We'll have to get him a Lucite Lincoln, that should do it 😅
You need better speakers. His bass is very prominent in the mix and it is actually a very interesting and smart choice to make for the bass tones.
Great video!
He says F# Dorian, but then he says "with a flat 2 and a flat 6." So that's not Dorian then. And then he plays an F# Phrygian, which does have the flat 2 and flat 6. Unless it has something to do with the microtonal stuff and I'm just misunderstanding, that didn't make much sense.
He meant an F# Dorian with the 2 and 6 lowered a 1/4 tone
Rattlesnake
yea he meant to say half flat 2 and half flat 6 (quartertones)
@@adams2203 this guy gets it. This is exactly what I meant. @rome8180 - I meant "half flat 2 and half flat 6"
Great interview, that high pitched ringing in the audio is a bit rough though
Thanks for the comment. The shop is noisy, working on getting better gear!
Love the band, the player, the bass etc just disappointed to see the political statement made on said instrument...
hey man .grow up
I second what old mate said. Grow up mate. Don't get your undies in a knot over his painted nails either :)
@@chlomance What did I do? I just think its weird when artists get behind organized groups regardless of what they are.
@@spacegrass6632 I'm not upset just a bit surprised but thanks for the concern. As I said, I just think its odd and divisive for artists to back political messages for the most part. I never said I have any problem with any particular person, its the premise behind it.
@@musicman9901 you must not listen to king gizz much because their music is full of political statements, plus it's just a dumb take from you in general
