I just received one of these for christmas and it is awesome. The directions are right on. It also tells you your speed and if you are driving too fast on the highway it flashes your speed in red. Kinda cool. Well worth the money. I also like how it tells you the names of all the cross streets before you get to them, this is good for when your driving at night and have trouble reading the signs.
I would still have to say yes for the following reasons. 1) Larger display 2) Text to Speech (tells me which street to turn on...not just turn right or left etc.) 3) On average...twice the battery life. 4) I prefer the screen layouts of the Garmins compared to the TomToms I'm NOT saying the TomTom GPS models aren't good or bad. I'm just saying I feel I made the right choice, and your very well done video helped confirm that to ME. It's a matter of preference...that's all. Cheers!
You blew a stop sign at 1:14, another at 1:20, exceeded the speed limit by 17 mph at 1:43, went through another stop sign at 2:08, but ended up at your destination. Epic TomTom video.
Typing in that Hospital address was going to take me below that parking garage. I knew that I was planning on parking in the garage, so I bailed from the directions when I got close. I knew that doing so would show how the Tom Tom adjusts when you veer off course.
I have said in another video here, the Nuvi battery life is something to consider. Both companies make fine GPS units, no doubt! For a low cost unit, I LOVE my one! It navigated me from Colorado to Tennessee without a hick-up! For a sub-$150 unit, I don't think I should complain! When I replace it however, I will certainly look hard at what Garmin has available.
I can't even begin to tell you how much better the Garmin Nuvi 255W is compared to this GPS. I'm so glad I got a Garmin instead of a TomTom after seeing this video.
One thing to Recomend... Download the 'Mr.T' Voice on the TomTom Website... It's funny as Hell... 'Turn Left Sucka'.... Turn Right At the Roundabout Fool'... I love it!
I bought and and though I've only used it once (still learning how to drive!) it did tell me the speed limit when on a road that was 40mph or higher. Pretty cool.
It does re-route. It takes maybe 6-8 seconds to re-calculate. Toward the end of this video, I intentionally take a wrong turn to show you how it adjusts.
This model does not have text to speech features. It has what is called Voice Guidance. Some...like mine have both voice guidance and text to speech. Text to speech is when the GPS tells you to turn on a specific street name. For instance...instead of saying "Turn left in 500 ft" with text to speech it will say "In 500 ft, turn left on Walnut Ave.
Pepboys will have it this Fri for 69.99 just know thats it is a refurbished unit with a new wrranty, Amazon has it right now for 79.99 no tax free shipping and a free leather carrying case worth 27.15, I ordered mine on Amazon.
i just bought this and it's pretty good. kinda weird when i was on the fwy it tells me to turn left a few times...then i noticed it wasn't a straight way and had some turns haha still cool i like this thing =D
@Dyadantumbe I can't answer that actually . . . I no longer have this unit, as I have moved on to a model 920. If it's in good condition, works, you need a dependable GPS, it's prob worth $40. That's just my opinion however. You can buy new ones with similar features for around $100
Ok. After viewing several TomTom One 3rd Ed. I went and purchased during work lunchtime and got a clearance at Target for $138.98 after Tax $150.83, not bad compare with Amazon new&used. First time use, it took me a long route home and the device tells me to turn into a Dead End street! Not really accurate, street been there for years. When I got home I downloaded the one-time free from the site, will try again if the map hopefully it helps.
@delliswierd - If I were you, I'd check the 1 year warranty as the horizontal lines are the first sign of pixilation failure; this will eventually lead to the screen completely failing. Send it back and say your concerned, also, mention the battery issue as they must give you a new battery, as part of their policy for 1 year. - Sorry for the long reply, lol :)
ive got one. the automatic zoom function is REALLY REALLY ANNOYING as you cant switch it off. when cruising through cities, you cant keep the overview ("am i driving towards the center or away from it??, is there a lake close by or will a highway cross soon etc) instead you get details on the next corner only.
I have a good bud who has a nuvi 350. I LOVE IT except for one feature . . When you navigate off course, it announces "re-calculating". It acts like you have really messed it up, vs the Tom Tom, that just recalculates on screen as if nothing happened. I asked my bud if he could turn that feature off and he said he didn't think so.
i have this model and its excellent the only drawback is the screen size when youre tapping in a street name etc the letters are very close together, i did find a way round this problem however just use a stylus pen from a nintendo ds works great
The Nuvi 255W wasn't even available when I puchased this unit! And today the 255W retails for TWICE what I paid for the One. I hope it is indeed twice the unit my Tom Tom is . . . You are comparing a 1965 Ford to a 2008 Chevy . . The one has been replaced with the 130 and it retails for $200. Considering price, is your 255W $100 better than the 130? That might be the better comparison . . .
I have the tomtom 130 - is it possible to get those "realistic" looking freeway signs/lanes on my model? I keep seeing advertisements for tomtom that show green freeway signs that look realistic.
@Stevepayne1994 Great, I have one and its great!! Except 1. The battery wont hold a charge (Can I get a new one?) and 2. When I turn it on after I unplug it for a few hours there are white horizontal lines, I tried restting it but to no avail( can this be caused by the battery)?????
how come you turn right at the end, then left instead of following through taking a right... it was kinda neat that you did though because it updated the rout needed.. was this your plan?
For the record, some of the TomToms that cost more than the Garmin I bought still don't have the features that included with my Garmin, and the battery life is still half that of the Garmin. Sorry Buddy, buy you're the one who is screwed, and made a bad decision.
yo compre un tom tom one y no me sirvio soy de curnavaca morelos y muchos lugares no aparecian era como si estubiera en el desierto no me salian caminos y eso que esta muy poblado y casi no hay lugares solos
It's funny because I only expressed my opinion for my own personal satisfaction, and now the fanboys that you speak of have nothing better to do with their time than to try and convince me that the Garmin I bought is terrible compared to the TomToms. They both do the job...some people take this stuff way to serious. I'm not referring to you though autofied. Have a good day.
No, you're not very smart for ignoring what I have said in all my posts. I wasn't comparing features, I was talking about the interface and screen layout which is the same on ALL the TomToms. It's ugly, and that's my point. The rerouting or "recalculating" is extremely fast on my Garmin Nuvi 255W. You obviously haven't used one.

I agree there...this video is cool. Nice job dcarico.
Thanks for taking the time. This is just what I was looking for.

It was the mount that came with it! Garmin's look a whole lot more secure, but the factory mount has been fine.
lol nicely put
I was visiting my dad who had heart issues, but we all expected him to recover. He didn't . . . He passed two days after I posted this.
Alright thanks! That was great. I may have to get one of these =)

good video. bit of a drag that the destination was a hospital though

I like the sexy voice. LOL. I like my Garmin.

@delliswierd Yeah it has text to speech, you can download a range of celebrity voices, some cost you but some are for free aswell :).
i received the tomtom one130 for free....i was gunna sell it but after seein this vid im guna keep it nd set it up in my car
Yep I bought one a week after my post hehe...It's a very good feature.
Pretty nice, i can get one of these brand new for $50, i should get it. :)

@xMixemup Sorry so slow to respond, as I never got this comment in my inbox. You can control the volume and turn it all the way off.
whats the difference from this one and the tomtom one 125?
how come you turn right at the end, then left instead of following through taking a right... it was kinda neat that you did though because it updated the rout needed.. was this your plan?
Do these tell you the speed limit of the road you're using? I thought they did but couldn't see any notice of it on the display..
Thanks.
@Stevepayne1994 Its after the 1 YR warranty :( Can I buy a new screen??
iam trying to change the language to english doese anyone now how ??
@dcarico This is w/o Text To Speech???
dcarico....what mount are u using? where can i buy it
i think it just tells u if ur speeding.
Does it re route you automatically if you miss a turn?
@Stevepayne1994 Haha, wait, this has Text To Speech?????

I don't like the 3D view...I prefer the 2D map with the North heading up.
If you can live without Text to speech, I would think you aren't going wrong for $50.00

salutare, ma poti ajuta si pe mine?
Probably not, I no longer have this GPS unit . .
