    I don't use tournament rules when I play so keep that in mind, as Austria-Hungary I send the troops from Budapest except a few infantry to Romania and the troops from Galicia I send to Romania, most times I get it the first turn, the few infantry I leave behind go to Serbia, the troops in Bohemia go to Galicia so Russia doesn't get an easy territory, the troops from Tyrolia go to Venice and I send over 2 infantry to Tuscany, the artillery in Trieste go to Venice and I move 2 infantry to Serbia from Trieste and the last 2 infantry go to venice, I do that because at my table there is a house rule where only that country can get the troops in a neutral it is aligned to, so Italy can only get those free troops if it lands a unit there, France can still drop troops off there though, it may seem silly to only send 4 to 5 Infantry to Serbia, it works for me because the units in Vienna go to Trieste and I doubt Serbia is going to get a hit on every roll, on turn 2 the units that moved to Trieste can move to Serbia and even from Romania if it is taken, I purchase a Fighter and Battleship my first turn along with infantry and I try to get 1 battleship every turn and I continue until I have a big enough fleet to be confident in taking the Mediterranean, I do this because if Austria gets control of the Mediterranean then Africa can get into the Central Powers hands, Italy doesn't have the money to spend on ships and France is a problem except it also has to deal with Germany so I doubt they will spend much on ships and if they do then less forces attacking Germany, I also get transports a few turns in to take Egypt and to drop troops off in Trans-Jordan or Smyrna to help the Ottoman Empire if they need it and the fighter I get first turn goes to Ukraine with the troops I have in Galicia and Romania starting turn 2 and if Romania is not taken then I send it to Venice and build another one to attack Ukraine next turn with my eastern forces, I think that wraps up what I do for Austria-Hungary the first couple of turns, It works for me so I do it, thank you for taking the time to read this, I love Axis and Allies 1914 and I love hearing and seeing other peoples strategies

      I'm intrigued, Jack. That sounds like an interesting strategy. I'm curious, with a move against Romania on Turn 1 and the purchase of a battleship the first few turns, what has the typical Russian response been in your games?

      It put them in shock because there are 6 infantry and 2 artillery in Galicia and 4 artillery and 16 infantry in Romania when it moved in, the battle will take a few infantry of course, unless you get bad dice rolls Romania is gone turn 1, I do most games and it just makes Russia freak out because even if Romania is not taken there is a big stack of Austro-Hungarian troops in Romania with units in Galicia, and there is Germany going for them as well, Sevastopol is also threatened so Russia has a lot of pressure, typically Russia buys lots of infantry for defence and if they get a stable defence going they eventually get artillery and maybe a fighter to start pushing back if they can and they also have to get the British player to hold the Ottomans down in Mesopotamia so they are not invaded down south, plus the Ottomans can move from Bulgaria its second turn so if Romania is taken I move those units to Ukraine and even if Russia moves an infantry to Romania to take it I don't mind because the Ottomans can take it because they need the money, Russia just does its best to to hold out as long as it can with purchasing lots of infantry

      I also do a romania move first turn. I agree serbia must go down, inorder to be allowed to go back to trieste, incase of albanian attack. However, with russia pinned down in romania, and 18 troops and 4 canons sitting in galicia, they are threatened by that on 2 main territories. It is a balancing act. You need enougj to wipe out serbia, but also devote enough to either take, or heavily contest romania. This puts a huge threat against russia. I am currently playing my 4th central powers play. The last 3 times, this tactic was excellent. This time the allies were a bit more aggressive with trieste and galicia. It definitely slowed me. The game is still going. Russia fell to communism. I made some very bif risks that turned into mistakes as germany, but i have managed to turn it around. The game is to close to call right now. The allies have a slight advantage in my opinion, but i know i have the allies fairly worried. The ottomans i think are going to be the tie breaker. If india wins soon, then i lose. If the cp manage india, the allies are doomed.... a slow death, but still doomed.

      Update: The Germabs and austrians were looking pretty bad, with the british fleet dumping troops into begium. Germany tried an all or nothing attack on the fleet in the chanel. They should have lost, but the dice were on their side. To make it worse for the Entente, the Kriegsmarine did so well that 2 battleships survived. It was 4 on 6. With the loss of all the transports there (around 8 or so), the germa s were able toconsolidate their defenses. Britain, as it lost it's fleet, decided to castle. So did france and italy. The germans decuded to invade canada when america had sent its troops to save the threatened brits. US fell, then Italy. The WEIRDEST game ever played. The cp should have lost, but 1 naval battle decided the fate of the entire world. Turkey should be called turkey vulture. They prey on weakened places, and consume them.

      i would send all troops from tyrol to Tuscany. from trieste i would send all troops to serbia. from hungary and galicia i would send all troops to Romania and probably take it first turn. from bohemia and vienna i would send all troops to galicia. only exception is maybe i send some troops to trieste if i did bad in serbia. from munich i would reinforce tuscany with german troops and from berlin i would send troops to galicia. the artillery from munich i would send to galicia. This way tuscany is safe for many turns. Serbia is either taken or contested. romania is probably taken. this way russia would have to defend ukraine, poland and sevastopol turn 1 which means germany could get a very good first strike in poland. after that i would hit either sevastopol or ukraine or both and i would try to contest albania without putting any effort into taking in. probably i would just use troops from tuscany and let the germans take care of it. Germany would still be alot stronger than france with this strategy amd the british would be too busy with the ottomans. the ottmans might even support Sevastopol with bulgaria troops. Russia wont be able to play a defend and counter attack strategy because their production would be very weak early and they would be hit with all the power of austria and alot of german troops which means the axis powers could split their armies and still win. the germans could send alot of units against russia, hold italy and still be stronger than france on the western front.

    I actually agree partly with +Jack Moon, regarding sending troops in Romania on the first turn. I have only recently tried it and only once (with infortunate dice-rolling) think of it this way:
    1) You dont actually have to commit all of Budapest's troops. I only sent half the infantry from Budapest and all of Galicia forces.
    2) You can still attack Serbia hard with a descent amount of troops. For instance, i also sent only one cannon from Tyrolia into Serbia which coupled with the two cannons from Budapest secured the neutralization of Serbia on the first turn.
    3) You do not actually endanger your borders with this move, but in contrary you strengthen them. Even though Russia's troops emerge in Romania , their number (6) is relatively small to cause you any kind of trouble. In order for them to destroy your entire force, you have to send only six units or less in which case they still have to score a hit with almost every dice! Thus the extra troops are probably not gonna cause you that much trouble, and even if you dont capture Romania on the first turn , they still have to attack you on their turn and eliminate your entire force so that Romania is not conteted, in order to threaten your core provinces like Budapest, in the following turn.
    4) You put way more pressure to the Allies this way too. Russia is gonna have to choose between sending troops to protect the contested Romania, send troops to hold Sevastopol or pull back in Ucraine signaling a general retreat from turn 1! In addition with the advancing german forces , this could cause havoc in Russia's defences from the very beginning.
    5) You really have nothing to lose. Russia is probably gonna send at least one troop in Romania to mobilize its army and add its IPC to its overall income on the first turn anyways. Therefore, is not preferable for you to attack Romania while it still has relatively few troops (6) with a potentially massive force (higher than 14 troops including cannons) , preventing this way Russia from getting 3 free IPCs and an advantageous province from which it can attack your core provinces? You can actually even add those IPCs to your income.
    6) Finally, the Ottomans are nowhere near threat from Romania on the first turn. Even if Romania gets attacked, thus moblizes, loses zero troops AND Astia-Hungary pulls back, Russia will have only six troops capable of attacking Bulgaria (in adjacent territories) which will also mobilize , providing six troops to the Ottomans. In this case, Ottomans will have a massive advantage over the Russian troops which will most likely suffer heavy losses and almost certainly not take Bulgaria. Also, that way Russia's front will have been overextended so Russia will either have to sacrifice a great amount of most needed troops in order to protect ( for a turn perhaps) its borders, or it will abandon its holdings there ( Romania, or Bulgaria) with few or none troops , therefore assuring their fall in the following turn.
    That is why i consider a first turn attack in Romania of great strategic importance.

    I've been thinking lately if it wouldn't make sense to buy a battleship and cruiser or 2 battleships on Austria-Hungarys first turn and take out Italys navy on turn 2 and still have enough left over to stymie frances navy and thus keep both from helping the british out in their fight against the ottomans while keeping th italians and also possibly the french from being a pain in albania. What do you think? doomed to failure or does it have a chance at ultimately helping the cp's to eventual victory?. This would be done in conjunction with a paris first strategy while just keeping Russia at bay as best you could.

    • @JonathanMeyer84
      @JonathanMeyer84  4 года назад +1

      That would likely catch the Allies off guard, so you would have that benefit. Beating down Italy and France (with German help) while also keeping Russia at bay is going to be really tough with no new Austrian land units placed at the end of turn 1. I would be very wary about going all in on the navy. Going with just 1 cruiser or just 1 battleship might be worth testing out, though.

    If you leave Trieste undefended, cant Italy use their fleet to possibly take out the Austro-Hungarian fleet and land in Trieste on their first turn? I feel like leaving Trieste undefended is a bold move that could pay off but also could leave you open for invasion

    My 1st game of this, I was axis, and I took Rome on turn 2 because the Italian player moved his navy to attack the ottomans and his troops in Rome were underwhelming. I doubt I will ever be able to do that again xD

      Hahaha, that's awesome! But my guess is you're probably right. Reminds me of the time I saw England taken on Turn 2 in the original Axis and Allies Europe. Thankfully, I was not playing England that game.

    when you discuss the Ally counterattack woth France moving Italian troops to Serbia, are the tournament rules different woth the official ones? it states that Italy has to disembark its troops on its own turn after France and offloading counts as your entire move unless its in a contested or enemy territory... so austria would go before those troops even hit Serbia

    • @JonathanMeyer84
      @JonathanMeyer84  8 лет назад

      Hi Robert, great question! Allow me to clarify that part of the video, because timing/turn order is critical. Austria takes its turn, then Russia, then German, and finally France. France loads up some units in transports and lands at least one in Albania. Albania is a neutral which is pro-Allies and leans Italy. When France lands troops, that activates Albania and because Albania leans Italian, Italy instantly gets 3 infantry and 1 artillery in Albania on France's turn. France does not get to use those Albanian troops, but they are ready for Italy at the start of Italy's turn 1. This can cause major problems for Austria, especially if Austria left Trieste defenseless since Italy will take its turn before Austria can react on their turn 2. If France doesn't land in Albania, Italy can of course do it on their turn but would not be able to use the Albanian army until their turn 2. At that point, Austria will almost certainly be better prepared.

      Jonathan Meyer understood... didnt realize you were mobilizing rather than transporting italian troops from the peninsula

    I'm having trouble understanding the tournament movement rules. can you explain them?

    • @JonathanMeyer84
      @JonathanMeyer84  8 лет назад

      Sure thing, Noah. There are a few differences. First, land units can move 2 spaces if they're moving to a friendly territory. This allows each nation to have faster lines of internal supply. This two movement rule extends to territories that the nation contests. For example, if Austria has units contesting Venice, it can move directly from Vienna to Venice (2 spaces). However, Germany cannot move to spaces into Venice unless it too has troops contesting that territory. On the topic of movement, ships can move 3 spaces if their starting territory contains a friendly port. An enemy port is considered a hostile sea zone even if no enemy ships are present and stops the movement of opposing ships on that turn.
      The other difference focuses on Economic and Political collapse. In tournament rules, any nation (not just Russia) can suffer from one or both of these collapses. If a certain quantity of production from core territories is either lost to or contested by hostile forces, a country can suffer economic collapse. This means it can no longer collect income nor can it buy new units. It can, however, continue acting with units already on the board. As such, it is possible to claw ones way out of Economic collapse. Political collapse is more deadly, but requires a higher threshold of lost core production. When Political collapse occurs, the collapsing nation ceases to be a player. All of its military units are removed from the game and any territories currently being contested automatically transfer to the enemy powers with all other territories left ripe for the taking. The thresholds for Economic and Political collapse are checked at the start of that power's turn and the effects are immediate.
      I may be forgetting a few other alterations, but those are the components that seem most apt to me.

    If austria Contested poland in the first turn, can they reinforce immediately from Vienna?

    • @JonathanMeyer84
      @JonathanMeyer84  6 лет назад

      Because both combat and non-combat moves take place simultaneously in this version of Axis and Allies, Austria would not be able to make that move on the first turn. However, if they are still contesting Poland at the start of their second turn they would be able to reinforce the territory from Vienna.

    Nice move with the landing in italy! Never had this in mind 🤔 in my opinion- this could be a huge mistake to let triest and Budapest without any troops. If russia moves to romania and gain bonus troops they will invade Budapest just to steal IPCs, and AUT-HUN has no chance to counter this move because now russia is one move in advance. Same problem with triest. If troops are actived in albania, Triest would be the Target...

      You might be interested in checking out my revised video on Austrian strategy (found here: ruclips.net/video/JwkQ1c6QxGs/видео.html). Russia won't be an issue in Romania; Austria will attack there from Serbia and, if needed, Galicia on Austria's Turn 2. This will prevent Russia from moving in on Galicia from Romania. I would recommend leaving a couple infantry behind in Trieste due to those pesky Albanians.

  • @joelcottrell4204

    I wouldn't attack Poland with Austria. Leave the germans with that battle. Pushing into Romania is key to beating Russia by the fourth or fifth round. The smartest thing the Russians can do on turn 1 is combine forces. I've been able to push into Germany with Russia, by moving belarus and livonia forces into Poland and letting the germans March into the slaughter.

  • @man-yp1gb

    Austria/Hungry is way too powerful. I think reducing their starting forces by a half should give the Russians a break. Historically , the Austrians were a weak incompetent military force. In this game they're too strong.
