    If you're a smart nurse, your goal is to get out of the hospital setting as quickly as you can.. Do your 1-2 years to "pay your dues" and then quit. Afterwards either shoot for an office job as a nurse or go back to school and get your Bachelor's or Master's degree so you can land a job in upper management. Be the kind of nurse who makes the decisions instead of just being a pill pusher. Think outside the box. There is more to nursing than bedside care. I've been a nurse for 17 years now and work as a nurse consultant for a non-profit organization. I have absolutely ZERO job stress, keep 9 to 5 hours, no weekends, no holidays and when I call in sick, no one has to cover for me. A lot of nurses are overworked and their physical and mental health suffers because of it. I guess nobody told them that they didn't have to.

      this could not be more true. even an LVN can get a management position at an HMO or NON profit.

      I love this comment. Its funny because when I told people I would be a nurse and said I would only work for 1 year and move on, people would say "thats dumb". Everything you said is exactly how I feel. Thank u for the reassurance!

    Are you kidding me? Nurses don't make a lot of money? I quit my 9 dollar an hour cashier job to go to nursing school, I'd take a nursing job that makes 30 dollars an hour in a heartbeat. It might not be a MDs salary but earning 50,000 a year is way more than my family lived on growing up. It really depends on what your lifestyle is.

      I live with my mother and the rent is like only 1,000 and electric and cable is like 100 bucks and a little over. and 30 bucks an hour is still very great. I live in New York City in the Bronx and there are some places that are pretty cheap.

    • @bleachfan178
      @bleachfan178 8 лет назад +12

      ikr. I consider that pretty good if you're full time and some nurses be doing be doing more than 40 hours a week. I did the math and they make some pretty decent amount of money. 30 multiplied by 40 is 1,200 and that's just one week. multiply that by 4 and that's 4,800 a month. and a year that's 57,600 . I can buy a new car with that amount of money and still have a like 20 grand left.

    • @Jordan-pd8ir
      @Jordan-pd8ir 8 лет назад +7

      +Google keep asking me to change my name. sooo annoying. The thing is, out of that 50+ grand you have to get, gas, bills, rent, taxes, health insurance, car insurance, food, clothes, pay off loans. So you really don't have that much left to buy a car with..

    • @bleachfan178
      @bleachfan178 8 лет назад +5

      Capn_Wreckz If you use your money wisely. For example. I'm living with my mother. and I only help pay two bills per month which is like between 200-300$ and I don't take loans to pay for tuition because my community college isn't so expensive and financial aid always covers it and gives me 1,000 and more to pay for textbooks. and I'm a guy that doesn't really need that much clothes and for food. I can always spend it on like boxes of snacks to eat everyday or cup noodles. I'm still going to have a heft amount of money left by the end of the year. And buying a car comes with getting car insurance for the first time. but the main goal for me is save up for a car. and with the expenses i just told you. I'll have enough for car insurance and food. There are people who are employed for less money and still manage to make a living.

    • @Jordan-pd8ir
      @Jordan-pd8ir 8 лет назад +7

      Yeah, I know how to manage my money, bro. All i'm saying is that 30$ is a good career, but that doesn't mean you're life is always gonna be easy. When you have a wife and 2 kids and a dog you gotta support, it still can be tight. You have to pay 300$ a month and buy some noodles, but other people have to pay way more and put food on their kids table and clothe their kids, pay car insurance and buy gas.

  • @BrandonAndersonVlogs
    @BrandonAndersonVlogs 8 лет назад +62

    Yeah you're not gonna be a millionaire being a nurse but damn saying they don't make a lot of money is a little odd hahah. 30 an hour is great money. There are people (like me) working my ass off in a hot ass factory making 13 an hour.

    • @tapsumbung81
      @tapsumbung81 7 лет назад +8

      But that $30/hr is only with multiple years of experience. This is also in CA where the cost of living is very high. I work in tennessee. I only make 21$ and 3 years experience. I am also paying hundreds of dollars in loans every month after 4 years of college for this job. Not to mention rent/sewer/electricity, insurance both health and car, food, cell phones, internet, and if you have kids this adds a LOT more payments. While I dont doubt you work your ass off in a hot place, we also deal with lots of stress thats really not worth the money.
      We deal with confused, often times violent people who are sick and dying. We deal with blood, sputum, infected wounds, feces, etc. We have to know every drug, what they do in the body, including their contraindications, possible side effects, how fast the onset is, how long they last in the body, and what breaks them down. We have to know hundreds of diagnosis' and what they do to people and how to treat it. We are the last defense of the patient when a new doctor is yelling at us to give a certain drug but we know DAMN well that the drug they want is wrong for this patient.
      Our jobs can be VERY stressful. So they are right in saying going into nursing for the money is the wrong way of thinking about it. Granted, if you choose to go into nursing to continue on with higher education such as nurse practitioner or CRNA, (which are also hard to get into and stressful jobs), then yes, you can make good money. Sorry not trying to rant. Just educating =) I will say, I'm definitely not jealous of working in a hot factory. I call the hospital "air-conditioned hell." lol

    In response to around 3:55-4:30ish: Im currently volunteering at a hospital and I definitely have seen that people pursue nursing for the wrong reasons and that nursing schools actually contribute to letting this happen. students shouldn't be only admitted to nursing school based on gpa and teas scores because nursing is not a career that you can be worthy of pursuing just because you can get good grades.The nurse is who most patients receive most of their "care" from and who they spend the most time interacting with. Nurses and the other healthcare professionals in a hospital/clinic are constantly put in stressful situations so it's extremely important that all of them have the ability to maintain a positive, genuinely caring persona to create a comfortable environment for both the patients (probably already dealing with pain) and coworkers (coping with enough stress as it is). Showing stress and unhappiness is toxic and unfortunately, many people who work in the hospital show this.

    • @neinmehr1601
      @neinmehr1601 7 лет назад

      Amanda Abernathy I agree. Nurses need to be the type of person who have a heart, and loves others. I think about the good Samaritan, and 1 Corinthians 13.

    • @melissacornard8216
      @melissacornard8216 7 лет назад +4

      I disagree. You need a balance between practicality and care. You can have a good heart and still end up killing your patient because of a lack of knowledge.

      You’re absolutely correct. I believe in your notion because when I was in the hospital, I had a nurse that constantly had a smug look on her face, during her hours of being my nurse, I saw the b***h only ONCE! My other nurses were attentive and very caring and never let stress show.. duh it’s a stressful job.

      On one end, some nurses cheat their way through school to showcase “good grades”. Thus, doing it for the money only.
      On the other end, you do need to know what you’re doing on the clinical end... maybe she’s saying that certain things are innate and sometimes the best nurses don’t pass the NCLEX because test taking is not their forte. But.. what do I know

    • @lydwinaofschiedam2685
      @lydwinaofschiedam2685 4 года назад

      I know this is three years out from the time of your post, but I am a nursing instructor in a college RN program. I personally agree that nurses must have a combination of a good heart and a good head. However, our college administrators don’t care at all about the types of nurses we produce - all they want is “butts in seats.” The more students we accept, the more money the college makes. None of our upper administration are even healthcare professionals much less nurses. Colleges and universities today are the same as any large business - it’s all about profit. Quantity over quality.

    NurseMendoza... I'm also 30 and I went to my community college for 1 1/2 years to knock my prerequisites out of the way but was unsuccessful due to kids but I am currently doing my CNA and I'm graduating from my phlebotomy course this coming weekend. It's a stepping stone because in between having to drop out of college I ended up having another child (total of 3) but u said it well, an awesome support system is good to have. My husband supports me because he sees how happy I am with doing what I love because I currently work at in my opinion the best hospital ER on the Big Island Of Hawaii and my coworkers all support me so having a good support system is good to have but not necessarily key because I know nursing students that don't have anyone and they are rockin it!!! Ur a true inspiration and I love how u lay it all out. But doing my CNA will make it that much easier for me during the nursing program... even doing my CNA and phlebotomy I don't have a life because everything is study study study because I am a perfectionist and I go after the 100% on exams and kick myself when I get 97%... I know CNA is mainly common sense but the hands on experience that I'll get as a CNA in so valuable!!! And yes when you look at how much work RN's/CNA's have to do on a daily basis especially in my ER they don't get paid enough... but u do it because you love it and not because you think your going to make ALOT of money. I didn't figure out what I wanted to do in life until after my first child was born. Wanting to provide a better life for them and helping others makes EVERYTHING worth it!!!

    Thanks for the video guys!! Straight out of HS I went to college did all my prerequistes for the nursing program and was accepted into nursing school the semester before I was to start nursing school I got cold feet and decided not to go. I thought to myself I can't be a nurse! I let fear get the best of me. After working in a cubicle for 6 years which I hated, I became a Massage Therapist which I have been doing for 4 years now and I love it but with no benefits and the unknown of clients and paycheck each week I started thinking about Nursing again. I deal with people all day so it's a good thing I love people! haha Anyway I'm thinking about going back to school and pursuing it again but have been hesitant. So I'm glad to have resources like this! It's definitely good to look at the reality behind a profession and not just the money aspect. As a Massage Therapist I make Avg $35-$40/Hr but I can only do 20 Massages a week and some weeks I may only get 10 clients so while the pay sounds nice the reality is much different. After watching your video it's given me more confidence to pursue it while also knowing the reality.

    Dude. Duuude. I fall under nearly all of these categories. Went in it for the money (my first med/surg position paid $22.50/hr, $30+ sounds too good to be true), went in it because my mom did so well as a nurse, I generally hate people (but I hide it very well), and it was one of the few programs that financial aid would completely cover. I'm just now starting into a new job after moving to a new state, so I've only been a nurse for a year, and even though I absolutely hated it with all my body and soul at first, it gets better. The more you do it, the less you hate it. At least so far, that's been the case for me. Who knows, maybe I was just lucky with my first job and I'll burn out after this one. For now, I'm hanging in there.

      +Lisa Panter I simply shared my point of view as a relatively new RN, and my expectations and regrets, as someone that didn't take all these things into consideration before enrolling in nursing school. This video is, after all, targeted toward people that want to know what to expect. But you're probably right, I should stay away from public forums with my experience, because only people who have no criticisms of this field should be allowed to share their perspective. Honesty isn't welcome or wanted in nursing. We both know that. Let's keep up the glamorous facade, shall we?

    • @lisapanter4725
      @lisapanter4725 8 лет назад +2

      No No No.....my comment was not geared toward sugar coating the pro's and con's of nursing. It was directed to the contempt you generally have for "people". For all I know you have tremendous clinical skills. Empathy for people is a skill you would do well to develop. If not for your sake, but for your patients sake. I wish nothing for the best for you and hope you mature into a beautifully well rounded nurse. :)

    I want to thank you ALL for doing a hard and sometimes a thankless job! Doctors. Are great but most take all the thanks for all who helped. Many people do not know the crap nurses put up with in #5 a great Nurse is a great people person and can show the care, where as doctors are trained to do a good job but show no real feelings. I come from a long line of Doctors but but my brothers and sisters are keeping that going, but I been in the hospital many times and seen the crap you have to clean up always with a smile and care for the person in the bed in Hawaiian we say Mahalo Uni Loa "Thank you" for all you do.

I got to live at home and my parents paid for my books. How people now can get through nursing school is amazing. It seems to me you almost need to put all aspects of your life on hold. I am happy to say that my HS class had 13 nurses in it. It has to be in your blood.It is a calling not just a job.

    This video did not at all discourage me from becoming a nurse I want to also work in cvicu. And I in no way considered the money and really don't care. the reason I want to be a nurse is because of my son he was born with hlhs and dorv and I spent months with him in the hospital. Thats when i knew nursing was for me. Thanks for the video guys very informative.

    I don't think they make it look bad, just realistic. no one I work with in my ICU are there for the money. You have to be there because you love it or you won't last. It's intense and it's fast. you don't make big money like most people think. it takes two incomes for my family to live comfortable.

    Hi nurse Mendoza. Before I ask my question just wanted to say that I love your videos. They are very motivating and have helped me change my study habits to successfully retain the information. My 2 questions are does it matter which school you go to to get a nursing degree and what would you suggest new nursing students can do to gain experience while in nursing school.

    Thanks for the video!
    Just a note - The field is WAY to broad to say high paying salaries aren't common.
    My girlfriend is in her first year working as a nurse - CM in home health care making a minimum salary of 80k, but is on pace to make 105k. She works no more than 45hours a week, and a coworker of hers who works around 50-60hrs a week is on pace to make 130k. However, most of her friends from school that work in hospitals make around 70, which isn't incredible but certainly isn't bad either.
    Point being, depending on the field your interested in and the demand for nursing in that area, you would be really surprised to learn what's out there. I know psych nurses in MN make even crazier money. You just have to do your research and find your fit.

    Nickolas RW: LPN is supervised by RN. The difference is RN does the assessment part. LPN depending on the company's policy, cannot push IV meds. Of course, pay would be a lot different too. I live in Alaska and initial pay for LPN is about $23 depending on where you work. Then RN would be higher pay.

    And just to add, even in customer service you have to act like you're happy with people who are tearing you down. I had a job where I had to deal with drug addicts (no security), had to clean bathrooms, deal with roaches, and basically manage a property for 8 hours with only two 5 minute breaks. I made $9/hr. That was two years ago so I can't imagine the pay would be much different now. And that's in San Diego.

    Maaaan, best station for nursing answers. I'm 30, exited the army (from San Fernando valley, been really thinking about it, finished all my pre requisites. Main thing that was bothering me was just the over whelming number of women in my classroom (2 guys, including me, in my A&P 1 & 2) and maybe not fitting in so well with them. I love women, nothing against them, just question if my personality would fuse well with them since it's a female dominant career. Any advice on that with your experience?

      That's a lot of money for a charge nurse, but I believe it. My dad has been an RN most of his life 40+ years. His sister was an RN also. He used to say that the more one makes, the more the government takes in taxes. That's one thing a lot of people don't mention. I also want to become an RN. Hi brianna scottland. When I was in high school I remember my dad saying he made around $90K one year. He worked a lot of overtime. But later regreted it because the income tax he had to pay. Can you point me in the right direction for online schools and a degree program to become a nurse.

    • @pablor011
      @pablor011 8 лет назад +1

      +marilyn brewer Are your active duty, reservist, getting out, staying in? I got out of the military (also not in the medical field) in the summer 2014 and started school immediately. My first summer semester I was still on terminal leave. Since then I have finished all my prerequisites and was accepted to nursing school in the St. Louis area. From my experience nursing programs usually will not consider you until you have certain Biology classes finished. Fortunately for me, the program I applied to did not need that fulfilled so I applied and was excepted almost immediately because my GPA was high enough. My personal personal advise to you is that you use Tuition Assistance now to get all, if not most of your prerequisites done. At the same time start applying to nursing programs that will start at about the time it will take you to finish your prerequisites. Again this is all MET-TC and depends on what your plans are in the military. Talk to your COC now and start any class you can take, immediately. Spring semester is starting soon. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
      Hope that helped out. Good luck!!!

      Rafael G Sir that's only a little over 50,000 per year. And it is possible. I know some new grads making that, now they were EMT's or PCT or NA. They do pay for experience. I mean if you've never step foot as an employee in a hospital setting then maybe your pay will be around 23-24per hr. Especially if your at the same hospital as tech or EMT and then get your RN. Its very possible. Nothing is impossible with Christ!!!!
