The main issue I have with this exterior is that it lacks presence. You can argue that current BMW’s are polarising, but their trademark characteristic is that they have presence. When you see one parked, you tend to notice it by the way it’s sitting. This new 1 doesn’t have it. It doesn’t have that sense of weight / musculature.
Well the design that catches presence is the X7,7 series and XM and they don’t look bad now, after seeing abominations like the new 5 series, which looks like a huge mess
I don't like it when the grille is lower than the headlights. They are trying hard to hide the mass of the front end but it just looks like it had huge headlights and a big nose.
BMW could do themselves a huge favour by going down the neo-boxy design philosophy to bring back the robust lines and angles that made 80s and 90s BMWs iconic. This new 1 series just looks like an asian hatchback, nothing particulary distinctive about it... It still looks better than the Merc Hatchbacks, imo - just not very BMWish.
It is genuinely insane, that THIS, a hatchback, is only 7 centimeter off a Mk1 Ford Focus WAGON in length. I get that the Focus is nowhere near as sporty, but holy shit what happened to modern cars, why are they all so big?
I'm surprised you didn't see the grille's strong resemblance to the KIA Tiger nose, especially since you always comment on the Tiger nose on new KIAs all the time.
That new grille looks sooo bad 😬 Also it's too bad that they're moving completely away from the very recognizable BMW angel eyes that they've had some version of for a very long time.
I have the bmw series 1 F40 118i full equipe… im lucky bmw did this shit with the new one, hopefully it will keep some value for some extra time 😂 The funny thing is that they are naming it a new model under the F70 code… so not really a restyling!
I found that the front classy, mature and clean.(not with the radar grill, but diagonally striped grill) Also the interior grapics of head and tail lights have more to the grounded statement. Although understanding the automotive feeling being missed, if these edgy design trend continues, curved design may seem like how 90s cars seemed on the next trend eras. Rectangle on the rear is pity.
They have destroyed the grilles on this... The horizontal one on the 135 is terrible and the combined diagonal and vertical one on the M sport model is a complete mess, like wtf were they thinking mixing that together?! Crazy. Looks like a Kia Ceed now.
The whole thing that made the 1-series special was the FE-RWD layout. The hatchbacks from Merc and Audi where both FWD based so there was a clear reason to get the BMW. You could get into every car they made and kick the rear out. That also made them affordable track monsters. Now however every hatchback is essencially the same car with a different badge and interior. Boring, bland, soulless.. the reason I loved BMW is because they always kept that soul... no more it seems
If Skoda and who ever else is doing double/kindney grilles at the moment had their own designs, we wouldnt be saying new bmws look like those cars. But sadly here we are. That being said the front of this thing just isnt bmw
We get the M135i/S3/A45AMG/Golf-R because they're small cars designed for the smaller narrower European roads. I don't think they would sell so well in usa. Also, this M135i is not a step in the right direction at all. The previous gen was much better looking, very close to perfection for the 1. This one has the shitty looking unibrow grille and the silly notch in the rear lights. The front light are too small and don't have the half circles Angel Eyes but instead some boring LED lines. I do like the simpler front bumpers, that's the only positive. The previous one had some flaws too, the grille was way too big, needed to be 2/3 of the size, and a split in the middle. BMW just cannot do grille's right. The lights looked better, both front and back. Rear lights were perfect, but the front ones, even though really nice design, would have been better with the traditional BMW full circle Angel Eyes.
