I read an interpretation that Cell's "half-time entertainment" would've just been him making Yamcha sing his "Cat Loves Food" song on live TV and I can't unsee it.
Actually, I could kinda see him just letting Yamcha try and fight him, especially after "post Goku exhaustion", maybe even getting a hit or two in. Remember, he does seem to kinda like him.
That is beautiful. And then because Cell ultimately loses and the earthlings live, Yamcha would be the one to get sued for illegally performing copyrighted material on live TV.
I mean, considering what Trunks actually ends up doing in the original series, Kaiser has a point if he did write it. Trunks is the only (half-) Saiyan that gets shit done

Against every other opponent he either gets owned immediately, fails to stop them at all, or is so far above them its not a fight. And that's not even mentioning how he sacrificed the safety of the planet to let his dad get a W. For all his complaints about the past he's no better than they are.
@@HeavySighSA he beats androids 17/18 and (admittedly first form) cell after this as well. His initial plan was to see if correcting the past would work but since that didnt he resorted to (and succeeded at) just going and doing what he could to fix the remnants of his timeline. It doesnt matter for the main timeline that most people only care about but he does genuinely try to get shit done more than gohan even (lets not forget gohan outclassed his opponents two MAJOR times in cell and super buu, yet both times lets his hubris turn into multiple deaths because he gets way too cocky for no reason like a full blooded saiyan does.) on the sacrificing the safety of the planet, sure, but in his mind he still had the power to kill cell and didnt see the negatives in his power up since he isnt as savvy in a fight as goku or cell. If he was right and he really was powerful enough then theres genuinely no negatives to letting his father go first and then jumping in before he dies if it gets bad. If he tried to do it on his own vegeta literally would attack him with cell first for a chance to fight cell instead (and literally does attack trunks for that reason, because he wants to fight cell at his strongest first before anyone else can tire him out and wont let anyone stop that)
@JubioHDX no reason? He got it from goku. Most of the time at worst goku straddles the line. But dropping his guard could seen as arrogance. Super buu losing the fused powers of goten and trunks directly bit goku in the ass because he assumed the fight was winnable without the earrings now. It was both pride and arrogance that got him. Finally getting overwhelmingly powerful against cell went straight to gohan's head and never left. After years of being beaten up, that sudden level of control and power was intoxicating and cathartic. Both cell and buu set him up the same way: he senses or hears about all the bad things they're doing and he's forced to sit there and not do anything about it right away. On his own without goku to teach the lesson, he would've flew off to fight them as soon as he realized they were hurting people, just like his future counterpart does. But the tradeoff is now that hatred sits there and festers. Gohan sat on those feelings for over a year. He had all that time to imagine how he'd make sure cell suffered for what he did. Buu was the same thing. He was kept away and the anger was forced to sit there and fester. Just like with cell, he overwhelmed buu and rode on the high of the level of control the power brought him. Beating cell made him cocky, but it's not until he's truly squaring up with buu that we see it on display. Again he also gets stuck on justifying violence and how to humiliate his opponent. With the kids, he felt the need to show off a bit too. I think it was in battle of gods that Trunks brings up how cocky gohan gets when he drinks.

My interpretation as to why Mr Popo took to Dende so quickly is because Kami would just kinda roll his eyes and go along with Popo's shenanigans, whereas when he jabs Dende, Dende jabs back, and Mr Popo appreciates it because everyone else is to terrified to give him any lip.
@@ItzSailorChaos Dende also freely mouthed off to Freeza & Vegeta, as well as flatly calling out all of the Z-Fighters (except Gohan), any of which could kill him and several of whom are planet-busters like Goku and Trunks. Dende also knows exactly how strong Popo is during the Buu Bits and hasn't changed one bit (since he's the one who prods Popo into helping).

Dende is so, so over any reverence he used to have. * he met super kami guru, and learned what kind of guy he is * his entire planet was genocided by an enemy they couldn't possibly oppose, basically out of absent-minded spite. * he's now aware that no matter where he goes, this is relatively likely to happen again due to the insane power inequalities within the universe. * his healing powers, the ability to preserve life, were mostly used to give random antiheroes a power boost * effectively no namekian can truly choose their own fate; they just need to hope that Vegeta's friends will defend the weak before Vegeta genocides more of them * he's met king yemma and witnessed how the mahogany is more important than any person's soul * he's now playing the same role as super kami guru on a planet full of strangers -- supplying resurrections and waiting to see if they're about to get genocided again * the only other namek on the planet is the guy who broke a sacred tradition of his people for a power boost dende lived a (presumably) reverent and calm life, with firm faith in super kami guru and the ways of his people. and then he rapidly found out that reality is so, so much less profound, and so much more pointless, than he had been raised to believe. there's basically nothing popo can threaten him with at this point because he's so far past his limit already i love this characterization of him so much 😍 now that trunks has seen the mahogany, he could almost be as jaded as dende but for two big differences: he never really grew up with as much reverence and faith as dende (having a scientist mom and a questionable grandpa), and also trunks at least has some power to fight these galactic horrors
You know that throwaway Harry Potter line from Mr. Satan is actually really sweet. It implies that he actually watches the movies with his daughter. Really the few lines that Satan has about Videl shows he, if nothing else really cares about and loves his daughter.
Kaiser mentions the possibility that without a Senzu bean, it could turn into a long drawn out fight. The thing is, every time a villain in DragonBall Z realizes they're starting to lose, they try blowing up the planet. EVERY. TIME. Hell, Cell tries twice.
@@GSSAGE7 I think this whole sequence can be summed up with a quote from Piccolo in episode, "The ends don't justify the means." Like, I get where Goku was coming from, but his plan didn't even pan out the way he wanted even after giving Cell the heal. Gohan continued to hold back even after threat of exterminating all of his loved ones. It was ultimately 16 that was finally able to get Gohan to let go and unleash his full potential.

It's just occurred to me that Goku making Gohan fight Cell is probably him trying to be *nice.* Like, from Goku's perspective, if someone fought a super strong enemy so he can get a feel for their movements, but then letting them heal so he can fight them at full strength, is literally the nicest thing you could possibly do for him. It's his love language. So of course he would want to share the best fight it's possible to get with his favoritest son.
My headcanon is that Cell spends months punching Gohan, lets everybody go home and take Christmas off, then when they get back goes RIGHT back to punching Gohan.

I agree, I like the Lani and Kaiser dynamic already in their previous podcasts and ramble reviews. But having the out of the loop perspective of Taka would be a great addition to their dynamic. With that I mean, Taka doesn’t seem to be as much of an academic in current media as the other two are. It’s nice to have a guy who is brave enough to ask the more stupid questions. With that, he got the semi-nerds like me covered.
Having recently gone and rewatched see abridged.... I think there should be an abridging central podcast if there isn't one already. People discussing their approach to the craft whilst rewatching their episodes. Encompassing everything from little kurriboh and code ment to maybe even rvb.

I love to see Goku throwing Cell the senzu bean as him taunting him, saying "Gohan's going to beat you in your prime condition. Go ahead and take the senzu bean, you're gonna need it." It expresses his confidence in Gohan so well.
And plus, Goku knew full well when Cell got backed into a corner he was definitely gonna pull a Vegeta/Frieza (i.e try to blow up the planet); so Gohan had to be able to kill him through overwhelming power, not attrition. Sadly though most of the viewing audience of DBZ would rather just mindlessly parrot "Goku Bad Dad Lolololol #piccolorealdad" ad-nauseum because they want the likes for the dopamine hit rather than try to think critically and for themselves. Which is sad because they ignore that only Goku actually had faith in Gohan to win, Piccolo basically called Gohan a pussy within earshot of him (conveniently ignoring how he put Gohan in that exact position years back...), y'know like a DAD would!!
The thing I never got about the Senzu bean, and people hating on Goku for tossing it out is... Did it MATTER? Like, at all? Cell has not one, but TWO infinite energy drives in his body. He literally will never run out of energy. Also, that same unlimited pool of energy is what fuels his regeneration. You cannot beat Cell with attrition. You have to kill him in one attack. Every last fragment of him has to go in a single blow, or he's going to just get up, regerate, and act like it was nothing. Thoughts & prayers would do more for Cell than that Senzu bean did.
@@RunicRasol Given that Cell seemed tired out after using bigger blasts and regeneration would imply he doesn't actually have infinite energy. My guess is that when he metamorphed into his perfect form, it used the entirety of the two infinite energy drives leaving him with a vast, yet finite, Ki reserve. The evidence for this is when he and Gohan are clashing Kamehamehas, if he had infinite Ki; he would've kept pumping more Ki into the blast, overwhelming Gohan eventually by sheer quantity

The thing about Goku is akira toriama has said that "Goku's want for a good fight is his poison". Him giving his opponents second chances and letting them reach their full power is a character flaw that's intentional. He is not superman, he isn’t an agent of justice. That is what makes him different from the average super powered hero.

Goku even spared freaking Frieza, the evil emperor that casually kills entire civilizations, because he thought he could redeem himself and become a sparring buddy. The dub really butchered the character.
@@okagron the dubs I watched as kids played up the idea that Goku sparred people to be merciful and just, and that he believed they coudl redeem themselves and become good. Which seemed dumb to me. But the idea that he just spares them because he likes fighting and wants to fight them again makes more sense for his character.
@@okagronthis is why Akira always points out that Goku isn't a hero, or at least he doesn't think he is one. He doesn't spare villains because of his moral compass and shit, he just wants a good fight in the future. It's purely coincidental that the villains he spared ended up being a good guy or at least helpful at the end.
I remember in some of the weirder dubs when Frieza is 'fighting' Nail, he makes a note about the regeneration like it's something he plans to study for have his scientidts work on. Not sure if the choice of dialogue was supposed to foreshadow how hard to kill he was.
And add in the Saiyan's Zenkai boost so he can instantly regenerate, from ANY injury, AND he gets a power boost every time he does. That's what I love about Cell as a villain, he combine the abilities of Piccolo, Vegeta and Freiza in a way that genuinely synergises and negates all of their drawbacks. It makes him totally OP in a way that really works for the series.
Actually, after fusing with Nail and Kami, Piccolo isn't that far off from what Cell was capable of - later in Buu saga he gets smashed to bits (accidentally) after being turned to stone by Dabura, and he regenerated back from that. Fusion with Nail increased his durability by a lot and boosted the regeneration (hence him not dying to 2nd form, 3rd form or final form Freeza on Namek), and fusion with Kami added another level to both (hence him not dying to 2nd form Cell), he just never got to the point of testing the new limits fully until late in Z... and he is too cautious to even try on his own just for training purposes... But considering the DNA of Piccolo acquired by Gero for Cell was from 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, years before any of this space crap, Freeza's and Cold's DNA did help put Cell beyond Namekian physicality for sure.
Episode 59 was so great that every time I was disappointed Ep 60 wasn't out yet I'd just watch 59 again and be happy. "Thinkin' o' you, Goku!" still reverberates in my brain.

Taka will always be my definitive Cell. If I could cast a reproduction of DBZ or Kai, I would definitely cast him. Masako for Goku, too, imo. I know that Sean Schemmel is iconic in his work as Goku, but I always felt his voice felt TOO serious for adult Goku, especially as they moved into Super. It just doesn't fit with the goofiness that is Goku.
I like to think Yamcha being the "Half-Time Entertainment" is him performing Cat Loves Food. Like what if Cell is a massive fan since Cat Loves Food is one of the only songs Gero programmed the tank to play for Larva Cell.
I love how the further into the season we get, the more just beyond done Trunks is. Like you said in the episode when Cell goes perfect, his allies, who he thought of as these mythic heroes of the past, have completely ignored his advice and fucked him over and now he’s just fed up with them all. Dude gave all the help he could to make sure the future would be saved only to have it thrown back in his face.
It's like a person that you like and respect but used to respect a lot more and sometimes get sick of their junk. Hence still enjoying spending time with them out of important situations but being done with them .

You mean the Star Wars prequels like they were talking about during that portion of the video? Attack of the Clones is legit one of the worst Star Wars movies: it's boring, meandering and terrible. Really, only the original trilogy matters and even Return of the Jedi isn't all that great. Star Wars, like Alien and Terminator, is pretty much a two movies franchise, with everything else ranging from decent to absolutely terrible.
@@okagron You have to remember that the original trilogy came out 40+ years ago. Nowadays, most people watch the prequels first because they watch in chronological order. So, those are the movies that they have sentimental attachment to and look back on with nostalgia goggles the same way older fans look on the original trilogy. Times have changed.

4:37 Kaiser, as somebody who got into video editing for the past half decade and have mostly just did it for small shitposts to share with friends in small communities on discord, this is still the most true thing that has ever been said about the subject. The amount of times I have saved a video, exported it, genuinely thought it's going to be the final draft and title it as such, and notice something I need to change last minute? Innumerable. My folder is literally just as much of a nightmare for some 12 second gifs as it is with these huge long projects.

Being a fan is just exhausting in general, haha! Everything has this gravitas to it which makes it so people either take it completely seriously or with an exaggerated detachment. It's truly facunating just how much weight media has online. Though I sometimes wonder if the old saloons during "Sturm und drang" in Europe had equally invested (albeit more isolated) conversation about novels and poetry of the time and past. Could you imagine saloon-goers discussing "The suffering of Werther" in the same manner as Star Wars or even Dark Souls is today? What a world!
All that really matters is that *_Attack Of The Clones is the worst one actually!_* The Rise of Skywalker may be chock full of *_all the worst,_* but at least it's not completely devoid of great pieces. Attack Of The Clones is just, like, *_nothing's there._*
Something I always found interesting about Cell's master surgeon without a patient line is that in his view being a surgeon means you show off rather than save lives. It kinda fits the fact that Cell has all the power of Goku and friends but none of the empathy or vaguely heroic nature
There are no surgeons without a twisted mind. I would wager a large amount genuinely have that same thought process as Cell. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to cut into another's body, and I imagine a lot of surgeons would just be serial killers otherwise. If I had a child, and he wanted to be a surgeon, that'd be a crimson flag.

I just want to take a moment to give praise to Scott. The amount of things you guys have pointed out that you made possible is incredible. You've changed facial expressions, took characters out of one scene to fit them in another, changed the timing of certain things like Gohan and Kurinrin flying off at the same time in Android 13, and so much more that would take me all day to mention. Basically, you took this show and made it your bitch and you are a fucking legend. You once said earlier on something along the lines of "If a director is doing a good job, you won't know it." So many of your edits are so good that until you guys went through and pointed them out I had no clue they were there. The way you've lined up the music and the music you've selected for certain scenes really took this show to a whole new level. Your greatness can not be understated especially considering the budget you guys were working with to make this all happen. You're writing is stuff of legend, all three of you. You, Lani, and Taka turn everything you touch into gold and these last few episodes have been nothing short of diamonds. From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you, not just for me, but for Dragon Ball fans everywhere. episode 60 part 1 dropped after one of my high school football games, and i was watching that thing in the locker room before i even took off my pads. i was so excited and the rest of the team had no clue why (we lost that game). good times
I genuinely think this is my favorite episode of DBZA of all time ever My absolute favorite joke is so quick and so dumb but that "Yeah fuck Goku!" Absolutely destroyed me when I first heard it holy shit. Not to mention the Vegeta monologue then agreeing with Cell, AND Goku being oblivious to his son getting beat up. Also, the whole Piccolo being 90% sure he can't do that killed me too. Great callback to when he was Semi-Perfect and asked "How durable is he?! How durable am I?!" Genuinely my favorite episode
I'll be absolutely honest... I'd pay for a Sitcom about the daily lifes of Dende, Popo, Korin and Yajirobi hanging up above the clouds, casually visiting each other... 😂
I am glad we kept those first nine minutes. Little things that just make it great. On that note, credit to the editors. Your add ins are what turned this from something I was listening/watching to in the background to something I sit and watch with full attention. Also Taka is right about Goku and the senzu bean.
Gotta say that if Goku hadn't given Cell that senzu, I easily see him getting desperate when Gohan is beating him and trying to worm his way out of the tourney or outright blow up the planet when he realizes he's outmatched.
And then blow himself up the same way, and that's scary since Cell has what, 9 DNA samples. 2.5 of those are Sayian DNA making it a roughly 30% Zenkai boost compared to a Regular Sayian. That an insane boost when you think about Semi Perfect to Superfect Cell
If he's outmatched and tries to blow up the planet, Gohan can just win the beam struggle...so there's no threat. He has to not be losing to Gohan, but having a hard enough time to realize "oh shit, if this keeps going, the prince or the boy can beat me."
my take on the whole "goku throwing a senzu to cell" thing is that it gets a lot better when you remember semi perfect cell's self destruct attempt near the end of the fight goku's been shown to be a good judge of character in canon and abridged so what he was probably thinking was that cell needed to be at full strength because if he was on the ropes he would've gotten desperate and murdered gohan before he could have transformed maybe i'm giving abridged goku too much credit but in the actual series he's definitely smart enough to figure that out
Nah because he doesn't know Cell can self destruct. If he thought Cell might try to end everyone if he thought he was losing pre-transformation, Goku would have likely a assumed a beam attack...which can be beam struggled against and defeated. And if Cell was losing/desperate, then he's probably in a state where anyone with blonde hair could win abeam struggle with him, Or at the very least make it a group effort. Its completely a bad decision that happened to work out.
at that point in time cell, despite being tired from the fight, was still strong enough to thrash everyone there combined and freeza and vegeta had both set a precedent that when enemies get desperate, they try to blow up the planet call it a bad decision but goku didn't have any other options and he picked the one that wouldn't kill his son
I think the general idea is pretty simple: Gohan has lots of power but he's unaware of it and needs a real push to actually reach into it. A weakened Cell is too strong for Gohan as Gohan currently is and Goku knew Cell's buttons well enough. On top of that, Goku knows how power works in DBZ by now. If your best can't take down the opponent or at least come really close? Ganging up is just gonna result in... well... look at what happened when everyone tried to jump in to help Vegeta with 18. He also THOUGHT he also knew Gohan's buttons and had engineered the situation so that Cell would push Gohan to break his limits instead of pretty much any other scenario (Keep in mind if Gohan thought he could win through attrition, even if he eventually realized he couldn't it'd be too late by then for him to get that last push he really needed) that could've resulted in things going poorly. Had Goku been right? Everything would've proceeded according to cake. Gohan reaches his new level of power and gets a fight he'd enjoy as a bit of a gift after a year of Father-Son bonding. Cell gets stomped into the dirt. Dragonballs to clean up the mess. Everyone goes home happy. However, Goku did NOT know Gohan as well as he thought and that fatal error made everything else fly off the rails including the result of Gohan finally tapping into his power.

I honestly can’t tell if you guys are being serious about that whole “next year” thing. So, just in case, and while the thought is still fresh in my brain… Watching you guys go over your old stuff has actually taught me how to be a better writer. My writing style used to be so one dimensional and all the characters talked the exact same way. Since we're kinda talking about it at the start, I hate that I can't talk about how much I genuinely like Zack Snyder's Justice League (which I'll gladly and openly admit is far, _FAR_ from perfect) without immediately being labeled as a cultist. I just like the movie is all.
The fact that you admit fault alone shows you aren't a cultist. Most people have guilty pleasures and like some bad or mediocre things. The cultists believe that his movies are all 10/10 masterpieces and a masterclass in both film making in general, super hero movies in particular, and should be basically copied by the actual comic books. You're also specifically only mentioning SnyderLeague and not the Snyderverse as a whole, presumably implying you dislike 1 or more of the others, further showing your lack of cultism.
There's a difference between having a movie you enjoy despite its flaws... and the sheer doggedness of those supposed fans. Unfortunately, the worst parts of any group will typically be what people think of immediately. Just look at the My Little Pony fandom. Plenty of great and reasonable individuals who are able to genuinely appreciate the setting for whatever reason.... but when people think about it they immediately jump to "bronies" and the worst aspect of that group rather than the original intention of it just being bros who were cool with the ponies instead of being caricatures of the stereotype that boys should find the whole thing icky and gross and too kiddie and so on. Try not to let it get to you too much and keep touch with those who either are similar to you in being willing to admit to flaws even if they enjoy it or those who are at least willing to hear you out. It can be rough, but that's just the nature of the internet and fandoms nowadays.

I'm curious about that one. On their Kakarot playthrough, they said they probably wouldn't have had Vegeta say "best buddy" during his sacrifice, that they'd have went a different way. They either changed their minds or went for fan service.
That file naming things hits so hard, especially when you have a production drive things are supposed to go into eventually. So for example, I used to work at an engineering company, and our production database uses the names of all the parts as the names of the files. But of course, when I go in to make changes or update formats, I'm saving them as "part_name revision draft", "part_name revision draft 2" etc. What I find works best is to have a separate, labeled, dedicated deployment directory, where copies of the most up-to-date versions of your files go. That way I'm always sure that what's in the deployment directory, what's in the production database, and the most recent, most complete, latest named revision in my local files, are all the same thing. So I have two backups to get it right if one of them fails for some reason. Triple-redundancy, folks - don't overlook it when dealing with digital files. It's super easy to do, and it saves you so much time and stress in the long run.
Maybe the reason 16’s arm is out so wide in the Abridged canon, is because the blast was so big, he spread his arm out wide to fully block the blast and the resulting shockwaves. Making sure that Mr. Satan and Jimmy Firecracker are fully protected

If Goku didn't give Cell that senzu bean and they had to slog it out, Cell would have just pulled out the still VAST amount of power he had and just crushed Gohan at his current power level. Cell needed to be confident in his victory, while still pushing Gohan past his edge to unleash the SSJ2 form. At which point, nothing Cell could do would save him. Almost nothing. As Goku will put it, It's all according to Cake.
I always thought it was funny how Gohan's super saiyan hair resembles goku's normal hair, and his super saiyan 2 look resembles goku's super saiyan 1 hair. Like he's half goku and has to push harder to fill his shoes. Reminds me of the relationship Tails has with the super emeralds.

Nightwing was canonically already in college while he was Robin during the DCAU and while an unclear amount of time passes, at least several years likely happen by the time the Harley movie happens from his first appearance in the DCAU as Robin. This isn't really "as soon as he turns 18". He was already 18 from inception in that universe. The reason Babs is creepy is because of a combo of the age difference and the fact that Bruce has canonically known this Babs since she was a child, bringing in some very weird grooming implications. That said, I also don't really like them hooking up, I'm not defending it. I just feel like you're attacking it from the wrong angle.
Getting to watch these commentaries has been a chance for me to relive my childhood in some small way. His initial plan was to see if correcting the past would work but since that didnt he resorted to (and succeeded at) just going and doing what he could to fix the remnants of his timeline. If he tried to do it on his own vegeta literally would attack him with cell first for a chance to fight cell instead (and literally does attack trunks for that reason, because he wants to fight cell at his strongest first before anyone else can tire him out and wont let anyone stop that)

@JubioHDX no reason? He got it from goku. Most of the time at worst goku straddles the line. But dropping his guard could seen as arrogance. Super buu losing the fused powers of goten and trunks directly bit goku in the ass because he assumed the fight was winnable without the earrings now. It was both pride and arrogance that got him.
Finally getting overwhelmingly powerful against cell went straight to gohan's head and never left. After years of being beaten up, that sudden level of control and power was intoxicating and cathartic. Both cell and buu set him up the same way: he senses or hears about all the bad things they're doing and he's forced to sit there and not do anything about it right away. On his own without goku to teach the lesson, he would've flew off to fight them as soon as he realized they were hurting people, just like his future counterpart does. But the tradeoff is now that hatred sits there and festers. Gohan sat on those feelings for over a year. He had all that time to imagine how he'd make sure cell suffered for what he did. Buu was the same thing. He was kept away and the anger was forced to sit there and fester. Just like with cell, he overwhelmed buu and rode on the high of the level of control the power brought him. Beating cell made him cocky, but it's not until he's truly squaring up with buu that we see it on display. Again he also gets stuck on justifying violence and how to humiliate his opponent. With the kids, he felt the need to show off a bit too. I think it was in battle of gods that Trunks brings up how cocky gohan gets when he drinks.

My interpretation as to why Mr Popo took to Dende so quickly is because Kami would just kinda roll his eyes and go along with Popo's shenanigans, whereas when he jabs Dende, Dende jabs back, and Mr Popo appreciates it because everyone else is to terrified to give him any lip.

Like, I get where Goku was coming from, but his plan didn't even pan out the way he wanted even after giving Cell the heal. Gohan continued to hold back even after threat of exterminating all of his loved ones.
It was ultimately 16 that was finally able to get Gohan to let go and unleash his full potential.

It's just occurred to me that Goku making Gohan fight Cell is probably him trying to be *nice.*
Like, from Goku's perspective, if someone fought a super strong enemy so he can get a feel for their movements, but then letting them heal so he can fight them at full strength, is literally the nicest thing you could possibly do for him. It's his love language.
So of course he would want to share the best fight it's possible to get with his favoritest son.

I agree, I like the Lani and Kaiser dynamic already in their previous podcasts and ramble reviews. But having the out of the loop perspective of Taka would be a great addition to their dynamic. With that I mean, Taka doesn’t seem to be as much of an academic in current media as the other two are. It’s nice to have a guy who is brave enough to ask the more stupid questions. With that, he got the semi-nerds like me covered.

I've watched this episode multiple times and it wasn't until now that I really heard the tenderness in Goku's voice. Even before the Cell fight, he's already so proud of Gohan, I'm gonna cry 😭
I love to see Goku throwing Cell the senzu bean as him taunting him, saying "Gohan's going to beat you in your prime condition. Go ahead and take the senzu bean, you're gonna need it." It expresses his confidence in Gohan so well.
And plus, Goku knew full well when Cell got backed into a corner he was definitely gonna pull a Vegeta/Frieza (i.e try to blow up the planet); so Gohan had to be able to kill him through overwhelming power, not attrition.
Sadly though most of the viewing audience of DBZ would rather just mindlessly parrot "Goku Bad Dad Lolololol #piccolorealdad" ad-nauseum because they want the likes for the dopamine hit rather than try to think critically and for themselves. Which is sad because they ignore that only Goku actually had faith in Gohan to win, Piccolo basically called Gohan a pussy within earshot of him (conveniently ignoring how he put Gohan in that exact position years back...), y'know like a DAD would!!
The thing I never got about the Senzu bean, and people hating on Goku for tossing it out is... Did it MATTER? Like, at all?
Cell has not one, but TWO infinite energy drives in his body. He literally will never run out of energy. Also, that same unlimited pool of energy is what fuels his regeneration. You cannot beat Cell with attrition. You have to kill him in one attack. Every last fragment of him has to go in a single blow, or he's going to just get up, regerate, and act like it was nothing.
Thoughts & prayers would do more for Cell than that Senzu bean did.
@@RunicRasol Given that Cell seemed tired out after using bigger blasts and regeneration would imply he doesn't actually have infinite energy. My guess is that when he metamorphed into his perfect form, it used the entirety of the two infinite energy drives leaving him with a vast, yet finite, Ki reserve. The evidence for this is when he and Gohan are clashing Kamehamehas, if he had infinite Ki; he would've kept pumping more Ki into the blast, overwhelming Gohan eventually by sheer quantity

The thing about Goku is akira toriama has said that "Goku's want for a good fight is his poison". Him giving his opponents second chances and letting them reach their full power is a character flaw that's intentional. He is not superman, he isn’t an agent of justice. That is what makes him different from the average super powered hero.
I NEVER realized that Goku always forgives his enemies because he wants to fight them again. That is so much better!

But the idea that he just spares them because he likes fighting and wants to fight them again makes more sense for his character.

He doesn't spare villains because of his moral compass and shit, he just wants a good fight in the future. It's purely coincidental that the villains he spared ended up being a good guy or at least helpful at the end.

I remember in some of the weirder dubs when Frieza is 'fighting' Nail, he makes a note about the regeneration like it's something he plans to study for have his scientidts work on. Not sure if the choice of dialogue was supposed to foreshadow how hard to kill he was.
And add in the Saiyan's Zenkai boost so he can instantly regenerate, from ANY injury, AND he gets a power boost every time he does.
That's what I love about Cell as a villain, he combine the abilities of Piccolo, Vegeta and Freiza in a way that genuinely synergises and negates all of their drawbacks. It makes him totally OP in a way that really works for the series.
Actually, after fusing with Nail and Kami, Piccolo isn't that far off from what Cell was capable of - later in Buu saga he gets smashed to bits (accidentally) after being turned to stone by Dabura, and he regenerated back from that. Fusion with Nail increased his durability by a lot and boosted the regeneration (hence him not dying to 2nd form, 3rd form or final form Freeza on Namek), and fusion with Kami added another level to both (hence him not dying to 2nd form Cell), he just never got to the point of testing the new limits fully until late in Z... and he is too cautious to even try on his own just for training purposes...

It should be really difficult for Cell to actually get a zenkai boost since his threshold for "near death" is so much higher.
The Senzu makes sense when you realize that if the roles were reversed, goku would love it if his dad gave Cell the bean.

Taka will always be my definitive Cell. If I could cast a reproduction of DBZ or Kai, I would definitely cast him. Masako for Goku, too, imo. I know that Sean Schemmel is iconic in his work as Goku, but I always felt his voice felt TOO serious for adult Goku, especially as they moved into Super. It just doesn't fit with the goofiness that is Goku.
I like to think Yamcha being the "Half-Time Entertainment" is him performing Cat Loves Food. Like what if Cell is a massive fan since Cat Loves Food is one of the only songs Gero programmed the tank to play for Larva Cell.
I love how the further into the season we get, the more just beyond done Trunks is. Like you said in the episode when Cell goes perfect, his allies, who he thought of as these mythic heroes of the past, have completely ignored his advice and fucked him over and now he’s just fed up with them all. Dude gave all the help he could to make sure the future would be saved only to have it thrown back in his face.
It's like a person that you like and respect but used to respect a lot more and sometimes get sick of their junk. Hence still enjoying spending time with them out of important situations but being done with them .

Really, only the original trilogy matters and even Return of the Jedi isn't all that great. Star Wars, like Alien and Terminator, is pretty much a two movies franchise, with everything else ranging from decent to absolutely terrible.
@@okagron You have to remember that the original trilogy came out 40+ years ago. Nowadays, most people watch the prequels first because they watch in chronological order. So, those are the movies that they have sentimental attachment to and look back on with nostalgia goggles the same way older fans look on the original trilogy. Times have changed.

The amount of times I have saved a video, exported it, genuinely thought it's going to be the final draft and title it as such, and notice something I need to change last minute? Innumerable.
My folder is literally just as much of a nightmare for some 12 second gifs as it is with these huge long projects.

Something I always found interesting about Cell's master surgeon without a patient line is that in his view being a surgeon means you show off rather than save lives. It kinda fits the fact that Cell has all the power of Goku and friends but none of the empathy or vaguely heroic nature
There are no surgeons without a twisted mind. I would wager a large amount genuinely have that same thought process as Cell. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to cut into another's body, and I imagine a lot of surgeons would just be serial killers otherwise.
If I had a child, and he wanted to be a surgeon, that'd be a crimson flag.

Gotta say that if Goku hadn't given Cell that senzu, I easily see him getting desperate when Gohan is beating him and trying to worm his way out of the tourney or outright blow up the planet when he realizes he's outmatched.
And then blow himself up the same way, and that's scary since Cell has what, 9 DNA samples. 2.5 of those are Sayian DNA making it a roughly 30% Zenkai boost compared to a Regular Sayian. That an insane boost when you think about Semi Perfect to Superfect Cell
If he's outmatched and tries to blow up the planet, Gohan can just win the beam struggle...so there's no threat.
He has to not be losing to Gohan, but having a hard enough time to realize "oh shit, if this keeps going, the prince or the boy can beat me."

my take on the whole "goku throwing a senzu to cell" thing is that it gets a lot better when you remember semi perfect cell's self destruct attempt near the end of the fight
goku's been shown to be a good judge of character in canon and abridged
so what he was probably thinking was that cell needed to be at full strength
because if he was on the ropes he would've gotten desperate and murdered gohan before he could have transformed
maybe i'm giving abridged goku too much credit but in the actual series he's definitely smart enough to figure that out
Nah because he doesn't know Cell can self destruct. If he thought Cell might try to end everyone if he thought he was losing pre-transformation, Goku would have likely a assumed a beam attack...which can be beam struggled against and defeated. And if Cell was losing/desperate, then he's probably in a state where anyone with blonde hair could win abeam struggle with him, Or at the very least make it a group effort.
Its completely a bad decision that happened to work out.
at that point in time cell, despite being tired from the fight, was still strong enough to thrash everyone there combined

I think the general idea is pretty simple: Gohan has lots of power but he's unaware of it and needs a real push to actually reach into it. A weakened Cell is too strong for Gohan as Gohan currently is and Goku knew Cell's buttons well enough. On top of that, Goku knows how power works in DBZ by now. If your best can't take down the opponent or at least come really close? Ganging up is just gonna result in... well... look at what happened when everyone tried to jump in to help Vegeta with 18. He also THOUGHT he also knew Gohan's buttons and had engineered the situation so that Cell would push Gohan to break his limits instead of pretty much any other scenario (Keep in mind if Gohan thought he could win through attrition, even if he eventually realized he couldn't it'd be too late by then for him to get that last push he really needed) that could've resulted in things going poorly.
Had Goku been right? Everything would've proceeded according to cake. Gohan reaches his new level of power and gets a fight he'd enjoy as a bit of a gift after a year of Father-Son bonding. Cell gets stomped into the dirt. Dragonballs to clean up the mess. Everyone goes home happy. However, Goku did NOT know Gohan as well as he thought and that fatal error made everything else fly off the rails including the result of Gohan finally tapping into his power.

Since we're kinda talking about it at the start, I hate that I can't talk about how much I genuinely like Zack Snyder's Justice League (which I'll gladly and openly admit is far, _FAR_ from perfect) without immediately being labeled as a cultist. I just like the movie is all.
The fact that you admit fault alone shows you aren't a cultist. Most people have guilty pleasures and like some bad or mediocre things. The cultists believe that his movies are all 10/10 masterpieces and a masterclass in both film making in general, super hero movies in particular, and should be basically copied by the actual comic books.

Unfortunately, the worst parts of any group will typically be what people think of immediately. Just look at the My Little Pony fandom. Plenty of great and reasonable individuals who are able to genuinely appreciate the setting for whatever reason.... but when people think about it they immediately jump to "bronies" and the worst aspect of that group rather than the original intention of it just being bros who were cool with the ponies instead of being caricatures of the stereotype that boys should find the whole thing icky and gross and too kiddie and so on.

That file naming things hits so hard, especially when you have a production drive things are supposed to go into eventually. So for example, I used to work at an engineering company, and our production database uses the names of all the parts as the names of the files. But of course, when I go in to make changes or update formats, I'm saving them as "part_name revision draft", "part_name revision draft 2" etc.
What I find works best is to have a separate, labeled, dedicated deployment directory, where copies of the most up-to-date versions of your files go. That way I'm always sure that what's in the deployment directory, what's in the production database, and the most recent, most complete, latest named revision in my local files, are all the same thing. So I have two backups to get it right if one of them fails for some reason. Triple-redundancy, folks - don't overlook it when dealing with digital files. It's super easy to do, and it saves you so much time and stress in the long run.

If Goku didn't give Cell that senzu bean and they had to slog it out, Cell would have just pulled out the still VAST amount of power he had and just crushed Gohan at his current power level. Nightwing was canonically already in college while he was Robin during the DCAU and while an unclear amount of time passes, at least several years likely happen by the time the Harley movie happens from his first appearance in the DCAU as Robin. This isn't really "as soon as he turns 18". He was already 18 from inception in that universe. The reason Babs is creepy is because of a combo of the age difference and the fact that Bruce has canonically known this Babs since she was a child, bringing in some very weird grooming implications.
That said, I also don't really like them hooking up, I'm not defending it. I just feel like you're attacking it from the wrong angle.

Watching Lani, Taka and Kaiser just chilling and talking while the episode downloaded was such an awesome thing to watch.
Getting to watch these commentaries has been a chance for me to relive my childhood in some small way. I know you guys will always be here, churning out content like you always have been, but nearing the end of this commentary series is like being there for the finale all over again, I don’t know what I will do with my Saturdays after you reach the end.
