ew no. Green hill, starlight, and spring yard are definite top 3. Marble, labyrinth, and scrap brain are definite bottom 3. I’ll hear arguments as to how to order those two groups of three, but no way does labyrinth crack top 3
For me, the ranking of Sonic 1's zones should go: 6) Marble 5) Labyrinth 4) Spring Yard 3) Scrap Brain 2) Green Hill 1) Star Light I'm one of the very few people that actually somewhat enjoy Labyrinth zone but the other zones in the game (Except Marble) are all just better in some way.
Isn’t the rock in Sonic CD supposed to stop you for a good reason. As you said it’s a level that introduces you to the game. If you have 50 or more rings it stops you so you can run at a slower pace and notice the big ring. You could go back giving you a chance to see with the special stage is.
That sure would make sense, but at least in the Christian Whitehead version (the way 99% of people have experienced Sonic CD) once you hit the rock you’re locked in the end screen. Idk if you can go back and explore more in the original, but it doesn’t work like that in the PC, iOS, android, or Origins ports.
@@ColdKirky I shouldn’t have said go back. I should’ve probably said once you hit the rock then you can continue on running until you see the big ring. Giving you a chance to jump in and see what the special stages is all about.
I'm sorry, but putting Wacky Workbench anywhere NEAR Labyrinth Zone is overkill. I agree with a lot of the points you made, but you also have to consider that: A. Travelling to the past opens up the upper paths, making it easier to navigate around. Time travel is also not particularly difficult because of the first cylinder in act 1, which takes you to a path with a past sign post and a long automatic section that keeps your momentum, and the looping machines in act 2, which also keep your momentum and the first one has a past sign right next to it. B. The music is fire
Wacky workbench will always be worse than Labyrinth in my opinion I can't stand that level I'd rather play Labyrinth Zone 501000028947558723610457 times than to play that zone another 4 times.
The quality of the video was so great that only when I minimize the screen to see the comments is that I notice the views and subs My guy, keep up this work. A really enjoyable video, and quite a great tier list imo. Here's to boost the algorythm, wish ya luck!
The rock at the end of Palm Tree Panic is to stop you as a point of no return and give you chance to go backwards through the stage if you haven't done everything you need to do. The pulleys in Mushroom Hill aren't difficult to use (albeit they ruin momentum) they just require patience to use. Hold down until it's passed a few notches and Sonic stops, then let go and do it again. If you keep tapping down quickly, you'll go nowhere slow.
With the PTP rock, idk if it works like that in the original CD version. But in the Christian Whitehead version once you hit the rock, the screen locks into the goal area. The spring right before the rock that bounces you back is the “point of no return” moment, and I think it serves that role well. The hidden rock is literally just there to be annoying. The only other argument I could see for it is that it’s a knowledge check, but at that point you could argue every aspect of every level is a knowledge check. The lever point is a valid critique. For the video I chose to show the clip of me mashing it because it looks goofier. It is absolutely faster to time it, but regardless of if you time it or mash, those things stop you in place and ask you to just press down for 10-15 seconds several times throughout the level.
After not playing any of the games for about 8+ years now I went and bought sonic origins. I decided to play 3 first cuz it’s the most nostalgic for me and After 3 hours I had beat the game with all the hyper emeralds done. I forgot how short the game can be but it was a blast

Yes we did, but not the best version of it...")
Thank ya thank ya. I thought about extending the “Mom” bit to mania green hill. Have it be like “no sweetie we’re having a guest over for dinner” and then it’s Gordon Ramsay at the door or something like that lol. And I remember a good chunk of all that was in the previous version’s comments. The main thing I was gonna say regarded the bosses. I didn’t say much about most of the zone’s bosses because most classic sonic bosses are just fine, and I didn’t need to repeat that 35 times throughout the video. I do agree that the collision chaos boss you mentioned is quite an atrocious one.
Seeing Labyrinth in S and Ice Cap in F on the thumbnail made me feel more understood until the video started and Labyrinth And Workbench were suddently in F
Another question, what are your favorite 2D Sonic fangames (either full or demo) and/or stage mods that you have played? One mod I'd recommend is Mystic Caves Maniafied, which does not really give the zone too fresh a coat of paint in the same way the official remastered Mania zones do, but it does add speedier elements especially in Act 2 with loads of monitor pickups everywhere as well so the difficulty isn't very high. And Tee Lopes remixed music.
I grew up with classic sonic and love Mania - but Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon (Act 2) don't hit my oldschool Sonic sweet spot at all. The music is cool but the zones don't make any sense. Doesn't feel like an adventure. More like a fever dream.
(Replying here) Overall those are similar to my thoughts on Superstars. Without the bosses (ie in Time Attack mode) I'd probably rather replay the zones of either the first or second half of Superstars compared to replaying either Sonic 1 or CD because there aren't real stinkers like Marbles, Labyrinth, Act 3 of Scrap Brain, or Wacky Workbench Zone. (And they did bring the Quartz Quadrant conveyors back again for a level in Frozen Base which is cool!) However, I'd definitely prefer the first six zones of Sonic 2 along with both halves of 3&K and Mania to either half of Superstars. (I split everything into roughly six zone stretches so that they are roughly equal length and because Sonic 2 tails off in the late zones.)
28:47 I've never really fought which it is but putting both of them with different names is really funny but also confusing cause they're spelt the same
sky deck zone was my least favorite sonic zone till a few days ago when I replayed cd. now its collision chaos which is below F tier. I've only had motion sickness 2 times in my life and one of the times was in collision chaos
Honestly it wouldn’t take much to convince me to drop Collision Chaos to F tier. It gets more annoying the more you analyze it. And it’s a pain to analyze because as you said, motion sickness.
Oh I did also want to ask, if you were to rank the eleven zones of Superstars (single player story mode only) what tier would they sit around in general? (Personally I'd be giving lots of Cs and Bs roughly.)
From what I remember, most of them would’ve ended up in the B-C range. I’ve only played through Superstars once maybe twice, whereas I’ve played through all the other classic Sonic games dozens of times each. It’s a fine, inoffensive game for the most game. Superstars feels like a later New Super Mario game, an enjoyable experience, but it doesn’t leave much of a lasting impression. Maybe I’ll give it it’s own video someday down the line.
hate to be the actually guy, but! fun facts! the second phase of metal sonic in mania and the last mech phase of metal sonic in mania are both knuckles chaotix boss fights with him with metal sonic kai being the last boss of that game!
Oh yeah! I had forgotten that those phases were inspired by Knuckles Chaotix’s metal sonic kai. I was saying that functionally the 3rd phase where the giant metal sonic chases you and shoots lasers is functionally a homage to the Sonic 3&K death egg boss. Add on the awesome Knuckles Chaotix Easter egg on top of that makes that boss even more of a banger.
@@ColdKirkyIn their defense.
