    Varrick is one of the most fun and well written characters in Avatar in my opinion. His constant shift of the kind of roles he plays from conniving selfish villain to eccentric but still selfish hero never felt forced or out of character. He is very well written and very well voice acted. Just my opinion tho

    Varrick has a weird thing because he is kinda painted as villain in book 2, but he was actually trying to stop Unalaq from taking over both tribes, of course he wasn't doing it the right way, but he is more the "ends justify the means" kind of guy I guess.

    • @RynKen
      @RynKen 6 лет назад +34

      Guiler That is something I noticed as well. Verrick was trying to make the north and south evenly matched so that he could profit from both. As a result, the civil war would have been very one-sided favoring the north without his intrusions. This situation basically stopped mattering after the threat of 10,000 years of darkness, but it was still an interesting event while it lasted.

    It's worth noting that we barely even saw Baatar Jr. in the last season compared to all the other kids, he literally just had one scene where he was following his dad around. I'm not sure if he was necessarily living in his dad's shadow, but he was obviously following along with whatever Baatar Sr. was doing while all the other kids had their own thing going on, which might've been what Kuvira used to convince him. There's also the fact that Baatar was the only non-bender kid outside of Opal, and maybe that - combined with Opal suddenly getting Airbending - kind of weighed on his mind too.

    • @hanizawady6555

      Wolf6120 good analysis. Never thought of the bending thing

    • @hanizawady6555
      @hanizawady6555 6 лет назад +1

      Kiprotich Toroitich But it doesnt make sense. The father isnt a bender, and not once has the family ever showed signs of looking down on him for being a non-bender. And hes marrying a metal bender, so by your train of thought wouldn't that make him still feel oppressed. Nothing of what Wolf said makes sense because it is never shown, or hinted at it. Your just pulling things out of mid air

    • @TheTororist
      @TheTororist 6 лет назад +48

      Ethio King amongst the kids, he and opal were the only non benders. It's not far fetched to infer that he felt some type of way when opal became an airbender and suddenly he was the only child without bending. It natural. Also, it's just a fan theory. One that I found plausible

    • @hanizawady6555
      @hanizawady6555 6 лет назад

      Kiprotich But it was never implied or showed. With sokka at least he vocalized and hinted at his lack of power due to him being a nonbender (he has shown to be valuable asset of Team avatar without bending) but with Bataar Jr. Its never hinted, or said or whatever. Its fine if its a fan theory but it has to make sense. But LOK is known for characters motivations to be shallow, and simplistic covered with imaginary complexities.

    Ah man, you know it's getting down and serious when Zhu-Li actually does the thing...
    I can understand why Su didn't want to step in and be seen as a conqueror, but at the same time there should've been something she could've done instead of leaving the Earth Kingdom to its own thing. I mean, it is her nation and she does have the resources and pull as a Beifong to at least help.
    Kuvira wanting to share Zaofu's prosperity with the rest of the world reminds me Sozin wanting to share the Fire Nation's prosperity with the rest of the world.
    Korra was easily manipulated by Kuvira because Kuvira threw her "inaction" for the past 3 years in her face. That's basically a very sore spot for Korra, which is also why after Korra got the remaining poison out, we see her immediately wanting to go to the action. This is also Korra's first time trying to really solve things diplomatically and as we've seen so far, it's not exactly going good. It is a contrast to what she would usually do first though, so she's trying.

    The CGI never bothered me. It's the same as in ATLA, I think the CGI is actually implemented really well in places in which it makes sense and for me it didn't stick out at all. And the actual 2D animation of Book 4, in every single episode of Book 4, is just stunning anyways.

      Timo Meh, I’m kinda with Blind Wave on this. The CGI with the new mech suits is one of the few problems I’ve ever had with LoK from a technical/animation perspective, besides most of the first half of B2 (sorry Perriot, but you’re no Mir). The problem is that they move WAY too fast for their size, and they move very abruptly - there’s no flow at all to their movements.

    For Suyin, I feel that this moment is all of her choices coming full swing.
    When we first meet her she casually suggests that they get rid of the monarchy. Criticizing leaders and advocating political reform is one thing, to suggest ending the entire political system is something completely different. There's an arrogance to that, she can casually say things like that because she's wealthy, lives in a city with platinum walls, and has her own private army. Regular citizens would not be able to openly criticize the Earth Queen.
    Then she decides not to help when her nation collapses. We know she didn't contribute to restoring order and safety in Ba Sing Se, but we don't know if she sent out relief supplies, took in refugees, or anything. As far as we can tell, she just stayed in her metal bubble.
    And regarding Kuvira, Suyin raised her and instilled her political ideology in her; Suyin bears some of the responsibility when Kuvira decides to actually act on the Suyin's beliefs. It's like Karl Marx, he wrote Communist Manifesto long before Lenin or Mao but he still bears some of the responsibility because he advocated, like Suyin, a complete change without giving any practical guidance.

Both wanted to expand their empire in the hopes of bringing peace and, although their hearts were somewhat in the right place just as Amon, Tarlock and the order of the red lotus, the execution made for a very interesting turnout, to say the least.

    I've always thought Kuvira was an interesting Antagonist. She isn't really evil, per say, though a few of her methods are extreme, however we see time after time where she is reasonable with the people who she interacts with. In this episode, we see her giving chance after chance for Zaofu to join them peacefully, without conflict or lives taken, so that the technology and skills that Zaofu posses could be used to better the Earth Empire and its people. And as we learn, Kuvira didn't even want to be the one in charge initially, she was willing to follow Su through it all if Su had taken action, no matter the outcome possibly, she only took up the cause because Su would not. And when you think about it, put yourself in her shoes. After all the hard work she had put into stabilizing the Earth Kingdom, and bringing peace and prosperity to it, would YOU have handed it over to Wu, the Prince, who seemed like he would have ran the country into the ground again? Its possible she could have acted as an advisor, but even then, he would still be able to ignore her if he wanted to. I don't know, just how I saw it, maybe I am way off, but I never saw her as a villain villain, like all evil and stuff.

All these traits she shares with Azula, and like Azula, Kuvira desires absolute power in order to force her vision of what she believes to be right onto the entire world.

      @@moneylover318 Like I said, Kuvira has a similar mentality to Azula to the extent that they both desire absolute power in order to force their respective visions of what they believe to be right onto the entire world. They believe that power and manipulation is the key to everything, and are both willing to do just about anything to get what they want, including torture and genocide if it comes to it. Their methods may be extreme, but they both have their own ideas of what is right and how the world should be run, and everything they do is to bring that vision into reality.

    Y'know, I've always thought Suyin was in the wrong in regards to her decision with not stepping up to restore order to the Earth Kingdom.
    Many many people were likely starving and dying and there was likely immense chaos as mass looting, banditry and the like arose. Various people would likely also have risen up and become warlords, laying claim to swathes of land as their own, ala after the fall of the Dong Zhuo in China and all the warlords fighting one another to claim land and power as the Han Dynasty and the Emperor had taken a massive hit to their credibility.
    Kuvira definitely brought order and some level of peace back to the realm, despite the problems being brought up with how she's been doing things.

      Yeah she really didn't have a good reason to refuse, it just seems like she doesn't trust herself to not become a dictator in the process, which is odd. She could always have put the Kingdom back together and then handed off power - the way Kuvira didn't - without imposing her leadership on the rest of the country. It kind of makes sense though, if you consider her childhood. It doesn't seem like she's ever been particularly good with authority, and even though she's the leader of Zaofu, she runs it more like a family or a neighborhood than as a proper country.

    Haven't you notice that Kuvira and Zaheer ideologically are exact opposites? Seriously they should have given the Kyoshi medal of freedom to Zaheer. The main idea of the series (some in tla, more so in korra), when directly applied to our world/human history, is that human emotion, mostly fueled by something called confirmation bias, tends to swing from one extreme to the other with momentum to spare, rarely stopping in between, and human societal/ ideological shifts have always been affected by the emotion of the people, such environment often prevents us from absorbing the best parts from opposing ideas and combining them together, for example like the economic efficiency of a capitalist dictatorship without the censorship and the social divisiveness sometimes caused by a pure democracy (no such thing but you get the idea), you know, just the best parts meshed together, evetually achieving say it with me now -"balance"

    I like Kuvira. She’s like Sozin, if Sozin actually made sense. "Yeah, sure, the Fire Nation is going through great times, and the world is in harmony... I have an idea: let’s become imperialistic conquerors for pretty much no reason at all! I know Avatar Roku pretty well; maybe he’ll give me a hand!" What gives? When we met Sozin in his youth, by all accounts, he seemed like a pretty cool, balanced dude. On a side note, I always thought his reasoning for wiping out an entire race (just to kill one specific person) was kinda dumb. I guess the point of the story was to show how Roku’s friendship with Sozin prevented him from seeing what his friend had become, but we’re never really given a solid logical/emotional reason for Sozin doing what he did. On the other hand, with Kuvira, we are given a very legitimate reason. Shit, I think I’d probably do the same thing.

      There are plenty of empires that have done the same like Sozin ex: Roman Empire, Macedonean Empire, Ottoman Empire. This isnt new and not far off. I think people underestimate Sozin as a villain which is a shame

    • @tiablue9106
      @tiablue9106 6 лет назад +16

      What do you mean? Sozin was clearly greedy and overly prideful about the Fire Nation and believed they deserved to own everything. He got a real big ego while Roku was gone and he hid his evil intentions behind "I'm sharing the nation's prosperity with the rest of the world" when he was sharing by force. And he wiped out the Air Nomads in the hope of killing the Avatar bc he feared their power (having experienced it firsthand) and didn't want them interfering with his conquest anytime soon. Like how Frieza wiped out the Saiyans. Yeah, it was total overkill (no pun intended), but it made sense. Kuvira just wants to reunite the Earth Kingdom, so honestly idk why she's the antagonist :T

    • @farimer1232
      @farimer1232 6 лет назад +1

      Ethio King When most of those empires started out, it was to get revenge on another land. Alexander the Great wanted revenge on the Persians, and it was only once that was accomplished did he realize he could keep going if he wanted to (and he was a rather compassionate conqueror anyway). The Romans destroyed Carthage because they were archenemies, then as they started expanding, they kept finding new enemies and beating them too. In both of those cases, they had discernible motives initially, not just conquering the whole world because "I’m sure it’ll like being conquered."

    • @hanizawady6555
      @hanizawady6555 6 лет назад +3

      Daniel Cohen But after they defeated that one small enemy they continued to expand because they believed to be the best and are worthy of conquering the world, like many empires. Fire nation wiped the air nomads because of fear of the avatar taking them down and once they defeated the nomads, they continued to conqueror the world. Pretty much the same as real life empires

    • @farimer1232
      @farimer1232 6 лет назад

      Tia Blue But that just makes him another mustache-twirling villain. We are given no reason as to why he started having all of these maniacal thoughts. It basically just came out of nowhere. The only clue I can remember is that when Roku was announced as the next Avatar, everyone bowed all the way to the floor, but Sozin only bent on one knee and bowed his head reluctantly. Could that mean that he saw the Avatar as merely his friend, and not as a revered world peacekeeping figure? Beats me. Also, the Air Nomads were a numerically small, peaceful race with no formal military who did nothing wrong. He could have just sent an assassin.

    On Kuvira thinking Bolin could help, I think she also figured Bolin's position as being close to Su (due to dating her daughter and presumably like...knowing Su very well over the years) would sway them. Like, "this guy loves your daughter and could be your son-in-law someday. You may not trust me, but don't you trust Bolin?" that in addition to how he truly believed in the Empire and is a genuine guy is probably what she was counting on. And since she has the army there, she definitely had a counter-plan. I think it may have been moreso to keep Bolin on her side ("you will show them we can be peaceful") and because the story will go "we came, we tried to make peace, we tried to make Su see the light, and she refused". No matter what, Kuvira wins since Su's refusal could make her seem unreasonable to those who are sympathetic to Kuvira. Especially with the bright, sunshine-y face of Bolin as her spokesperson.

      agreed. I loved her for season 3 but when this season hit, I was like "EW, you're hotness went from high to 0" lol. And I hate how apologetic Boalin got later. Like, I'm not even happy they got back together. Ye, he should've investigated more but he DID investigate but his boss lied to him, and at this point, he had no reason to think she lied since he saw her "fix" Earth Kingdom.
      That's like if your girlfriend told you your Mom is one way (a way of your mom you've never seen) and you ask your mom about it and she says it never happened, and you never known your mom to lie. Like, I would never tell my GF she should leave her dad. I would inform her but it's my word against his. If he did stuff in FRONT of her and she doesn't care, TOTALLY different.

    People have rightly compared Kuvira’s rise to power to the rise of Fascism in times of power vacuums and economic upheaval. But as a corollary, I think a piece that people are missing and that the creators perhaps left underdeveloped is the parallels between Su Lin and neoliberalism. Her insistence on freedom, determining your own destiny, creating a society of the gifted and deserving while taking a laisez faire attitude to world affairs. Su Lin is essentially a more sympathetic Ayn Rand. In this light her avoidance to take control of the earth kingdom makes complete sense given her libertarian tendencies, and better explains the animosity and extremism of Kuvira, a poor orphan who never had the opportunities the beifong family did. Fascism is horrible, but usually arises as a backlash to the failings neoliberalism.

    13:52 this is exactly why I did not like Varrick this season. They created a tech savvy and intelligent main character yet everything that Asami could have been doing was given to him. Varrick was fun but the time they can allocate to each character is limited and I don't care about Varrick, Julie, Prince Wu, or anyone other then the main cast, who should be getting the most development. Varrick should have been left in the first season.
