7:20 Those are called true temperament frets, and they are exactly what you think they are for. Henrik is probably one of the best MODERN bass players on the planet right now. His performances consistently bring tears to my eyes.

Owanes videos are always hilarious with his exploding helicopters and other goofy edits. Incredible player and composer, and its cool seeing someone so talented that doesnt take themselves too seriously haha
Those frets are True Temperament frets, which is a Swedish invention iirc, and mostly used on guitars. Henrik uses them on most of his basses, and says it makes a real difference for him, when it comes to intonation, and that they're not any different to play with than straight frets. And that's just me repeating what I've heard, as I'm a horn player and really have no clue about these kinds of instruments, if I'm honest. :D The guy in the red and black jacket is Jack Gardiner, a British guitarist (who lives in Switzerland, I think, which explains the Alps in the background), and the other guy (who plays both keys and guitar) is Owane, who's Norwegian..

@@ingefiddle I took cello lessons for a couple of years, some twenty years ago, and I found the bowing REALLY difficult. The french horn is indeed a ridiculous construction, and I guess it's not exactly suited for the faint of heart, but I think all instruments have their own challenges. ☺

Both highly regarded jazz and fusion instrumentalists. They’d never met before the making of this video and the rest of the whole album Shredemption, but look forwarding to ‘one day having a glass of water’ together 🤣 Henrik Linder is one of their childhood heroes, so they asked him to join them for this track. His solo -just great. He pulled all the stops out, -notice how he even brings his left thumb onto the fretboard at 5:52?! He’s playing one of his Mattisson Signature basses with a true temperament fretboard, -yes, for better intonation, as you’ve guessed. I also love his bass line underneath that fire guitarists’s solo…just too good! Elsewhere Henrik talked about his need to adapt his relatively small hands to a relatively big 6-string fingerboard, and how it made him search for economic ways and positions for his left hand. Always strikes me how calm his left hand is… Like you, I wonder who’s playing the drums, they sound so tight as well…it could be a drummer he’s worked with called Maciej Dzik. Ah, and that moment when Owane also tries some fancy moves on the keyboard, at 5:56 😂👍
The True temperement frets has the biggest effect, when he is playing with acoustic pianos or other instruments, who have different octave. Like the piano f.i. which is tuned by ear. Just a qualified guess.

In my 50 years of playing bass, I can honestly say that I've never heard anyone refer to a fingerboard as a fretboard. Maybe it's just me. Also, the keyboard player was the other guitarist on this video. All that said, I really liked the tune. There's a lot of great musicians out there!

I see you have some Snarky Puppy along with numerous others I'll enjoy, and I'd like to throw two suggestions. Cory Wong and the Wong notes is an amazing act, as you've seen with Dirty Loops. I can give you specifics, or you can pick most any of his! And from Snarky Puppy, Mark Lettieri. "Montreal" live has some off the chain musicianship.
I read or heard someone say that Henrik has crooked frets because it helps him to play more accurately! Not sure if it does and k forget who said it! You being a BASSIST does that seem possible?
Hi Sultan, the crooked frets are a thing and they are used for better intonation. It is a thing. That is why fretless basses exist. Some people like to play in slightly different positions other than the fret mark. So they might be slight off from that. Well Henrik has specialty frets so he doesn’t have to go fretless and he gets better intonation. Thanks for asking!

Owane is an excellent player and a great guitar player himself. Check out Summer Jam or Love Juice. He's also a hell of a bass player.
