Precisely. I've owned dozens of bikes over the years, currently have a 2023 Husqvarna TE300 which is one of the latest and greatest two strokes... Have ridden plenty of modern injected 4-stroke 450 MX'ers.. While modern 450s might outrun them in a drag race, the old 500 two-strokes still seem to produce more power throughout every gear, any gear, at any time. True definition of BEASTLY motors
Kawasaki were always known for good power in their 2 strokes. I had a 97 KX250 and a KX 125. Both were great bikes. The 250 was hard to keep the front tire on the ground. I can’t imagine riding that 500. Very cool! Brings back some memories of some nice bikes.
I've riden all three kawasaki .yamaha Honda.And Suzuki there all.grate bikes in the 500 cc class all stock bikes but believe this the honda cr 500 was faster than them allthe cr 500 had all its power at the top end kawasaki and the Suzuki were close but the cr just kept on digging and pulled away I was very shocked my self
@@rickwaldron4255 What CR did you ride? I own 4 open bikes, 2 of them CR500s, an '88 and a '96. Both of them make all their power down low and flatten off on top. My KX500 and YZ490 are the ones who like to rev.
I like it. Its true, you really learn to flow with these bikes. Some of the early big bores were very unpredictable with timing the power hit. That's why they spund like mythical killing machines when the old school dudes talk about them
I miss my old kx250 I defiantly was watching you guys over the years building mine. Unfortunately I get rid of it about a year ago now but the echo's that used to let off in places was enough to send shivers down your spine. What a noise man!
That thing runs damn good. Nice and clean. Piston is fresh and it don’t drool out the muffler , clutch doesn’t slip. Pretty good wheel up demonstration too.
I remember my ol' 420, passing cars along the side of the highway, ripping past in second gear,100 foot rooster blasting dirt like a rocket ship on wheels!
I had a 96 CR500, it’s an absolute monster. It’s the only bike I’ve ever had that I had to “ease” the throttle open. Since I am only 5’2”, I had to stand on a milk crate to start it. I rebuilt the bike (powder coated white frame, polished aluminum swing arm, exhaust and forks) and put a graphics kit with matching seat on it and sold it. It was divorce or eventual death if I didn’t sell it. Sure miss it tho

The old 500 two strokes mostly had extremely linear powerbands. Just power all the way through everywhere wherever you needed it. If I'm not mistaken I remember some being dyno'd at over 70 hp. (tuned of course, but DAMN)
Love that big bore Kawasaki I had a YZ 490 only had four gears but awesome power my expansion chamber kept splitting I think that was from the amount of vibration!

Nothing compares to 2 stroke power. Just the way it feels brings goosebumps, and when the power comes on, they are incomparable ! I remember when Yamaha came out with the first four-stroke open class bikes, and everyone was telling me how awesome they were. I knew then that there was no way that they had built a four-stroke engine that could compete with a two-stroke, even if you give the 4 an extra 200cc's. And I was right, they can't keep up.
As much as I like the big bore 2 strokes my ktm 4 stroke so much easier to ride and probably as fast.maybe I'm just old.had a ktm 500 back in the day.was a handful..lol
I’m old enough to remember the old big bore Maicos and Bultacos and they were absolute monsters too, - Maico in particular were years ahead of their time. Sitting on their tails when racing meant getting shot blasted with sand, mud, pebbles, rocks and boulders - and the long travel suspension they had (10”, maybe 11 inches, back when CRs and RMs had 7) made sure that back wheel was ALWAYS pressing into the track. Christ, being in your 20s and racing ….. oh the memories.
I always thought four strokes would make great dirt bike engines, - except for the weight, after using nothing but two strokes, they just feel so heavy. That said, back in the REAL olden days, blokes would race Triumph Bonnevilles and Matchless 500s etc (with vaguely knobby tyres) and they weighed about 9,000lbs so your KTM would be a relative featherweight. Enjoy yourself.
I remember the power. My step-dad had a KTM 500 in 1989. He wouldn't let me ride it until that one day. That completely awesome day. That SOB was scary. I remember slowly twisting the throttle and the front tire coming up and I ended up on the back tire for a mile. LOL. My KLX 250 4 stroke was the biggest slug after that. Although I'd like to have it back. I stroked right up any hill on that old bike. That 500 in the video was my dream bike. Hints why I'm here.LOL.
Man I miss the old 2 stroke days, used to have RMX250 then 94 YZ250, all my friends had something so I got to ride pretty much everything from KTM/Husky to CR and KX 500s,YZ and WR 490, the sounds and the smell of racing gas with oil in it. Good old days, now I putt around on my XR650L
The huge 'curl' in the 500 pipes always was funny to me. My 2023 Husqvarna te300 has PLENTY of power. About 15 years ago I rode an old clapped out CR500, and that thing still felt like it had more power than my modern Husky race bike

Those old 2 strokes sure screamed. Had an old Penton Six Days 125. It kept up easy with the 250's. Bought a Penton Mint 400 but only had it a short time. It scared me.

I have a 99 KX500 currently, had a CR500 for 9 years also. The KX, in my opinion is faster but the CR turned better and seemed more controllable

Was and always be my dream bike! Thinking later 80's year, no perimeter frame. Truly more than a handful of power than anyone needs!
500s never got the perimeter frame (although several individuals did) but yes, it has conventional forks on it. Likely an '88 or '89.

That 500cc is a fast bike.. wish I had one, but my 250 was good for the trails I was on as a teenager.
I'm a Honda guy but the kx500 will always be the king of the 500's.
