Kawasaki were always known for good power in their 2 strokes. I had a 97 KX250 and a KX 125. Both were great bikes. The 250 was hard to keep the front tire on the ground. I can’t imagine riding that 500. Very cool! Brings back some memories of some nice bikes.
Precisely. I've owned dozens of bikes over the years, currently have a 2023 Husqvarna TE300 which is one of the latest and greatest two strokes... Have ridden plenty of modern injected 4-stroke 450 MX'ers.. While modern 450s might outrun them in a drag race, the old 500 two-strokes still seem to produce more power throughout every gear, any gear, at any time. True definition of BEASTLY motors

Love that big bore Kawasaki I had a YZ 490 only had four gears but awesome power my expansion chamber kept splitting I think that was from the amount of vibration!
The old 500 two strokes mostly had extremely linear powerbands. Just power all the way through everywhere wherever you needed it. If I'm not mistaken I remember some being dyno'd at over 70 hp. (tuned of course, but DAMN)

I’m old enough to remember the old big bore Maicos and Bultacos and they were absolute monsters too, - Maico in particular were years ahead of their time. I always thought four strokes would make great dirt bike engines, - except for the weight, after using nothing but two strokes, they just feel so heavy. That said, back in the REAL olden days, blokes would race Triumph Bonnevilles and Matchless 500s etc (with vaguely knobby tyres) and they weighed about 9,000lbs so your KTM would be a relative featherweight.
