That stock is beautiful!!! That old 30-06 is hard to beat when the chips are down. Just imagine the energy transfer when this round hits a deer, as demonstrated by the explosive impact on those water jugs. Great series you’ve done on the K98’s!!!

Hi Wayne. Yes indeed, most deer I have shot with this old '06 have pretty much gone down right there on the spot. Those that ran didn't go far.

Hey Tom, For years I have hunted with an old 1970ish Winchester Model 70 Featherweight I cherish. It has been my faithful companion in the deer woods for years. It always took Deer ethically, dropped them where they stood and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thanks again for another great episode and from an old friend from Kentucky God Bless you and your family

Hi Steve, Nice to hear from you. I think it's great that you still have that model 70. Old guns like that are almost like family members because they have been with you for so long.

Nice to see a reloader. Went to Scheels for primers and I don't think the clerk reloads over the primers he sold me. Oh well. I am looking at 4064.

Well CO, that is one handsome rifle. I would love to know the gunsmith, barrel manufacturer, stock maker etc.

I actually refinished and checkered the stock because it was begging for some custom touches.

I sometimes run a reduced 30-06 round with certain bullets. You have that option when you are a handloader.

Compared to ballistics gel, water is an extremely hard testing medium.
Compared to flesh and bone, even gel is a hard testing medium.
What happens with water is absolutely not what happens with flesh and bone.
Yet I agree, a white tail deer is not a formidable target at all. If you go for lung shot, it's a couple thin layers of hide and a bit of muscle and fat, the rest is basically air (lungs). The important thing is the projectile really expands well and puts kinetic energy on that tissue in the core of the animal. I'd prefer high-shoulder CNS.

You have to wonder where in time the majority of these labors of love end up after the original owner expires. And more to the point, would they ever be raised back to their former glory by the likely new owner who received from used shop after widow or heir separated from family line. Something to think of when judging new vs old.

Standard cup and core bullets are too poorly constructed for high velocty, close range impact. I once had a 180 grain power point detonate like a vmax on the surface of a mule deer as it tried to stand up after I walked up on it after it was shot.
