I’ve been driving a tow truck in a large college town and tow around 1000 cars a year for parking where they aren’t supposed to be. People constantly assume I have a spotter, I’m watching them, or paying off a property owner when I honestly do not do that. The property owners make money by charging for parking on their property to residents and other people. I make money by towing the cars. People park in the lots all the time I can literally drive by every 15 minutes and find a car that’s not supposed to be there. Every lot I tow from has posted signs and cars that are allowed to be there have permits. The really busy lots I know exactly what cars go there and what don’t because I memorize the cars since I see them multiple times a day everyday of the year. Towing laws vary state to state but here in Michigan there just has to be a sign posted at each entrance. Property owners have every right to have cars towed and most of the lots I tow from are on a patrol basis. People call me a POS and many other names and accuse me of so many things but they can do whatever they want. If I didn’t do my job these parking lots would be a mess. People pay $250 or more a month for their spots and they want them open and every spot gets sold out. If people want to call tow companies scammers or think I’m a POS that’s fine. If people want to dispute it they can take it to small claims court. I do my job so throughly and take such good photos documenting everything the company has never once given back a dollar in court for anything I’ve towed. I also do plenty of other stuff like roadside assistance and will save you off the side of the highway in the middle of a snowstorm or change your tire and get you on your way. People either hate me or love me depending on the situation. I get a lot of satisfaction out of my job and try to be as professional as possible. 99% of the people on this earth wouldn’t last more than a week doing this job and I see it all the time with the turnover rate. It’s also one of the most dangerous jobs out there. On average at least one driver gets hit and killed every week on the side of the highway trying to help someone. I lost a coworker in 2018 who was hit and killed by a drunk driver while he was doing his job. He left behind his wife and 2 young children. Please just take responsibility for your actions when you park and don’t be surprised when your car gets towed out of a private parking lot. It’s no one’s fault but your own. At the end of the day I make extremely good money and support my family which is all that matters to me so if you want to look down on me or other tow truck drivers that’s fine. Just remember our services aren’t free and new tow trucks cost at least 150-200 grand and that doesn’t include crazy high insurance and other overhead costs. Please try to understand we are just doing a job and we risk our lives everyday while doing it.
