Yes so true, I realised that my parents never respected me, primarily because I share all my matters/issues with them, this almost ruined my marriage, their nose and hands were in it, obviously they had good reasons but it became unbearable. I kept my humble distance, maintaining arms length relationship, although difficult but I’m gaining my respect little by little. Our phone calls never goes beyond good morning how are you bye, very tough decision but I had to make it for my sanity, I love them but they are controlling and don’t even realise it.

Just coming across this... Thank you so much for this answer... it furthermore solidifies my belief that marriage is not just the coming together of two people, but two families and in as much as the couples are the main characters, the family members are also stakeholders...

As Pastor Iren started speaking l immediately thought of Abraham and his desire for Isaac to marry from his tribe. I also remember Genesis 26:34-35 where Rebecca and Isaac were grieved by Esau's wives. I don't think I'll have any issue with my children marrying outside my tribe but I wouldn't want them marrying a non Christian someone isn't Bible believing, completely sold out/surrendered, in love with Jesus Christian. In fact i reject it in Jesus name! Their spouses are lovers of Jesus, they live for God through and through.
My reasons if God is at the centre of their marriages I know they're ok.
Me just realising parents don't put up these conditions out of spite but they are just looking out for their kids in their own way.

My dad told me in 2014 that if I bring anyone that's not Igbo he would fast till the marriage scatters. I got married to an Urobho guy in 2021.
As soon as we concluded that we wanted to get married, we started praying about our both parents weakness (June 2020), we did introduction in June 2021, tribe NEVER came up. The only thing he said was "Yoruba mother in laws) are chaotic, what do you know about his mom"?.
My MIL on the other hand is Deeper Life and didn't want a Christ embassy girl for her son. I met my MIL physically for the first time on my wedding day (see, don't try this if you don't have strong convictions and your husband cannot defend you). But the Holy Spirit showed me something I called my fiance to discuss and as we were speaking, his mum's call came in and when he picked she said she dreamt about the same thing I was telling my man, as soon as he told her "that's the exact thing Ozi was just saying", she fell in love with me and we started speaking regularly on the phone. I sent gifts to her even before we met.

We were both very young, my dad had an issue with the age, but he just concluded that since we both had full time roles and clear career paths (the fact that my husband aided my transition from Microbiology to software development spoke VOLUMES). He had my elder sister and my brother in law vouching for him.
You need to have a proven track record o, it's easier convince your parents if you bring forth your STRONG reasons

This is how it should be,
Getting convictions from God is the most authentic and when your parents refuse, take their matter to God and God who brought you both together will sort the matter out.
