I really love this, MP would be a perfect host in a radio station
Absolutely, what with all the anecdotes he has with almost each and every band or album
He should start a prog station on satellite, there is none.
Well, for me this is as good as! He should separate the audios of these videos and make a Podcast to put on Spotify....
Crazy fact, he actually was as a child for his dad who ran a radio station in California! You can learn about it from his Loudwire Fact or Fiction interview.
Well, his dad was radio host.
Show your old vinyl collection, plissssssss 😁
Those would be some long videos man, lol.
awookieandagerman I’m game
Hope Mikael Akerfeldt will show his collection someday
He would need three years to get through the collection, I guess.
Mike, you have given me the best gift. I´ve being hearing JellyFish for the first time ALL DAY LONG. WTF!!!. THANKS MEN
you're incredibly lucky.
Check out the Kevin Gilbert too!!
Now you need to deep dive their other projects!! You'll be glad you did!!
Holy shit, same on me now HEARING jellyfish ALL DAY LONG,what a band, what an album 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I got into Jellyfish because of this video; found both of their CD's used for a decent price and remembered Mike's glowing recommendation. All I can say is thank you Mike, for showing me this awesome band! Hardcore beatles and beach boys vibes!
So no Iron Maiden re-issues?
no lol
Dear Mike, thank you very much for mentioning Kevin Gilbert, because he was trully big music genius but not so many people know him now. Nice to hear from you, that you wanted cooperate with him. Pity, he passed away :( Btw, these videos from you are amazing! :) Jan
What?? No Iron Maiden??
Thats what im sayin
I figured he would at least have the last two albums and one of the live ones, I know these are new purchases of his but still
R. I. P. Kevin Gilbert. Such a loss for the music world. He had so many awesome songs. The Shaming Of The True is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I believe there is no Vinyl release.
Correct me if I'm wrong but, he was the guy that inspired Thoughts on Beware The Darkness from Spock's Beard and also mixed that album too. Toy Matinee, Giraffe, everything he did deserves a spin from any prog lover.
Kevin's estate announced last week that they are finally planning to release The Shaming of the True on Vinyl. The goal is this Christmas.
He engineered some of the Beware of Darkness album, but I don't recall if the song/lyrics were inspired by him necessarily.
"The Great Nothing" has been well noted, was inspired by him (and possibly others).
There was a great Shaming tribute by a German band in 2014 : ruclips.net/p/PLTBY60CDofh0Ds65fc5YyKMFP8raQVVFv
Much better than the snippets I've heard from the D'Virgilio tribute.
Great to hear some respect for The Elder.
Enjoying this, but I think it would be even more interesting to see the old records.
I can practically feel all the music 'journalists' combing through this video trying to scrape together a few sentences to base an article on
I was expecting at least one Iron Maiden album! (But I know they are in the old collection ;-)
That’s too bad cause the new remastered editions sound phenomenal.
I thought the same thing. Maybe he has them filed under "M".
King Crimson's Red will always be a favourite of mine, amazing album top to bottom.
Yaaas, I was anxiously waiting for this to continue. I'm thoroughly studing your collection, since I'm always hungry for new music (especially during these lockout days) 💜 You're awesome, Mike, keep it up! 🙌🏻✨ Love you from Argentina
For those who don't know. The guitarist Russ Parish that MP mentions on the Kevin Gilbert album is now known as Satchel from Steel Panther.
Nice catch! One of my fav. guest appearance from Him is on the DIO tribute album - song: Rainbow In the Dark
I've always imagined Kevin Gilbert in Transatlantic, or working with you and Neal in some kind of retro proggy-pop band.
Also last week Kevin's estate announced they plan to finally release The Shaming of the True on Vinyl (goal is Christmas).
Can't wait for the next Liquid Tension Experiment. The three of you were the heart and soul of all the greatest DT music.
Can't forget Myung's contributions to DT !!
t3hgir Of which there is little.
I don’t want to call anyone the “heart and soul” of DT since LaBrie and Myung have been in DT so long and surely put their heart and soul into it. But with that being said I’ve never personally liked LaBrie’s voice much so LTE making a new album is making me realize I should’ve been listening to them a while ago.
Also WAR EAGLE!
@@nicholasbailey6622 Can you imagine Russell Allen with Liquid Tension???? Man, that would be kewl.
Mike Portnoy is one of my favourite people, Liquid Tension Experiment 2 is one of my all time fav albums
Kevin Gilbert's "The Shaming of the True" will be released for the first time in vinyl in the fall of 2020!
The song Starless is just sick. A true masterpiece.
🤟KING DIAMOND👍👊 stay safe Mr Portnoy God Bless FROM MEXICO🇲🇽
Holy shit, I've always loved Thud! (especially the song Joytown) and recently I discovered what a great guitarist Satchel aka Russ Parrish is. I had no idea he'd played on that song!
Thanks mike for show me kevin gilbert, excelent !!!
Jellyfish... brilliant second album, one of my favourites too - I never get tired of it. And The Elder... just awesome. First few Genesis albums are amazing. And there's some stuff in there I've never heard but now I'm gonna check them out, including Haken. Thanks Mike. Keep these going. And do an 8 track version of this! I want to see more of your collection.
all the Genesis albums are excellent
a trick of the tail is a masterpiece approved by Daryl Stuermer and AAlphonson Johnson
wind and too
and and then is the transition with a great drumming
duke is great
abacab is not my fav
genesis has good songs
invisible has great pop rock progs songs
we can't dance has a great tribute to Bonham with the last song
like calling all stations
but the best phil collins toms snare bass drum pedal can only be heard with the remasters made in 1994 not the worst: 2007 all was changed especially 1976 to the 1998
KEVIN GILBERT YES, do you have the Giraffe stuff?
You're missing the third King.. 's X.
Kudos for Leprous, Ghost and Haken👍
Dude has great taste
@@ulfingvar1 Yeah, he has. Pity, that he doesn't have ABBA's The Visitors vinyl, or maybe he has, but is afraid to show it so not to be made fun of by metal elitists. The Visitors is indispensable ingredient of anyone's great taste, especially any musician's.
AWAKE is a piece of ART
I really hope mike is aware of The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Ive never heard him mention them but if you like Sean Lennon and Les Claypool its required listening. Fantastic prog/psychadelic.
yeah you'd think they'd totally be something he would dig.
I'd be shocked if he doesn't know about it. The dude is a walking music encyclopedia.
Really cool, Mike. Thanks for continuing to share with us. Saw Haken and Leprous not too long ago in Philly and it was pretty cool! Do you have your collection cataloged? If so... what do you use / recommend?
Mike, your boundless enthusiasm is a tonic in these strange times.
Yes it is!
I concur.
Kevin Gilbert. What an incredible songwriter and musician. Literally gave me chills when you mentioned him. Toy Matinee is a masterpiece. It makes me beyond sad to think what he could have given the world.
yeah, pretty much my thoughts every day.
where's IRON MAIDEN ?????????????????????????
Love Kevin Gilbert Thud, but where is it available on vinyl??
Starless one of the best ever
Eddie trunk is gonna have a meltdown seeing all this vinyl
He'll just say how many of the artists he knows personally and how great he is
LMAO
@@joedorer8867 Wait, Eddie knows some music artists personally? I never would've known.
Love your series it is so engaging. You shouldn't say "Hope I did not put you to sleep". We all look forward to your next episode; you are so knowledgeable and I am getting to know bands and musicians that I never heard of. Today I discovered the band Jellyfish and it's all thanks to you Mike.
I find this fascinating, I don't want it to end.
Yes, 'Starless' is probably the greatest prog song ever.
14+ minutes of prog ecstasy.
rubicon1983 starless by King Crimson, right?
Mike, like listening to Jellyfish for the first time, you HAVE To pick up Devin Townsend's EMPATH on special edition vinyl. It was a religious experience, much like that early October in 1994 when I sat down in front of my speakers and listened to AWAKE from start to finish, Brilliance!!
There is SO much to chew on here but suffice to say it's an utter joy to join this man sitting crosslegged on the floor like a little boy in his shorts flicking through his records....many of which we ALL have flicked through ourselves either in our own or other people's record collections when we were kids. Yes, I know time has moved on but fuck it I love talking about the old, classic stuff, especially with the digressions to other subjects like Mike does here. It's like we're all at Mike's house and looking at his record collection before staying for tea!! Love it! Ha ha!!
PS No King's X??? Boooooooo!!
Mike's level of passion for music is always inspiring and amusing to see. I just love this guy.
It's the right time to start your own podcast.
like Steven Wilson just did.
No Maiden??
Sorry, but Roine is much better that anyone, even Morse. Not a single bad album, and Neal had a few very borring ones
Thank you for sharing your humanity, Mike.
I’ve been a fan of yours for years.
It’s funny coincidence you mention Kevin Gilbert and Toy Matinee. Have just listened to that for the last days since I follow Guy Pratts channel and he was a part of that (and Tim Pierce as well if I don’t remember it wrong). I think Sheryl Crow & Toss Panos did the live shows :-)
Also, with all due respect to Casey, it would've been so interesting if Kevin Gilbert was a part of Flying Colors... One other thing, you do appreciate seeing people that you love coming together to play, so please consider doing music with Jonas Reingold. I am sure the outcome would be among your best materials… Anyway, this series is enjoyable, I hope you’re planing on doing this for all your music collection, not just the reissues… Take Care :)................. REDRUUUM
Mikkey Dee on Them is a monster! Glad you mentioned.
I sort of thought Gentle Giant would've been there since they were the very pinnacle of prog together with King Crimson, Egg, Caravan, Yes, Genesis etc. I hope they're amongst the originals otherwise Mike has something magical to look forward to!

OMG you reminded me of Toy Matinee. I have to get that again.
Toy Matinee album John Good was the drum tech on the album...hence the perfect drum sounds :)
That whole album production is incredible.
@@pcs56 agreed.
Love your sharing! I love JellyFish. Have both on CD - I'm going to have to look for the vinyl.
Never clicked on a post so fast. Was saying to discover new music. And this helped big time! How the hell did I miss out on Jellyfish for so long! Wow! Thank you Mike!
Jellyfish's albums are almost timeless.
Loving these videos. As a lifelong Kiss fan, (born 1969 and a fan since '77) I was a huge fan of the Ace solo album as a kid, but through my life I somehow came to love the Gene album most. (so Beatlesque at times)
I find your lack of King's X disturbing. Most of their catalog has been rereleased on vinyl. :)
I have heard of King's W and King's Y, but never X...NEW BAND?
yes, although there are some of their later records i still need to get on Vinyl.
They're so underrated, which is a shame! They're so unique. Love their Dogman record.
I found that surprising too but he probably has it in his old vinyl collection like he's mentioned several times. And I know he is a fan because I had seen an old interview of his where he said FaithHopeLove was a favourite record of his. What a band!
@@unstabilizer Dream Theater was played an excerpt of Over My Head, and they also toured with King's X back in the early 2000's. Plus Lines in the Sand featured Dug Pinnick of course.
Mike Portnoy: Hey Dave see my Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Who and Beatles DVDs collection
Grohl: That's cute 😎
?
Loving these videos Mike! I love it when musicians I look up to talk about music they like, especially when they discuss it with such passion and knowledge as you! Makes me want to check out these albums even more or go back into the stuff that’s already familiar. Keep ‘em coming!
All Things Must Pass IS a masterpiece for sure !!! Wish I hadn't dumped my 70's version (w/poster) when I converted to CD, pretty dumb! These are fun Mike, keep em going with your old vinyl/cds, that should take you into late 2012 when you can our again lol
You are so right about jellyfish! i was blown away when I first heard their song on MTV - I ran to buy Bellybutton at once. A mistake I made was I got a CD as it was my CD buying period. What a mistake ...!
Fantastic, Mike! Man, you make entertaining videos. Genesis Trespass is so great! You have excellent taste in music.
I'm Surprised Jim Matheos didn't hook you up with some Fates Warning Reissues. Perfect Symmetry, and Parallels were reissued in 2018.
Always nice to see FW fans show-up :). My FAVE Prog Metal band (ALL era's). I know it's one of Portnoy's all time faves.
Cool to see you have Meliora. Ghost is my favourite band and Meliora my favourite album ever and seeing a musical genius like Portnoy like it too makes me happy. And damn, if Portnoy and Åkerfeldt cover Epitaph.... that would be legendary.
Agree about The Elder.
I received this video's notification when I was watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind and King Crimson appeared ahahaha
Ghost! Nice! Mike, if you like Tobias Forge stuff, check out his previous band called Subvision. Only had one album but great stuff!
I'm surprised to see no Gentle Giant or Iron Maiden
Wow! That went so fast I didn't realize it was 40mins gone already. You're the best Sir Mike Portnoy! Btw you looked very healthy as healthy too!
I LOVE The Elder. Thank you for the salute of that record. Thank you as well for honoring AJ pero and recognizing that Twisted Sister is one of the greatest live bands of all time. The fire still burns!!!!!!!
...and Iron Maiden?? I do not understand....
Mike is dad that still have a teenage heart
Mike, you should do a project/album with Mikael Akerfeldt then you could get him to cover Epitaph.
In fact, not even SW was able to bring up so much infomation to this kind of level.
Congregaciones señor Portnoy.
Steven is doing a cool new podcast with Tim Bowness called The Album Years.
¡Congratulaciones Señor Portnoy!
After reading all of the members of kiss's books they gave info on the alive album. Everyone always trashes peter kriss, but his vocals and drum tracks from the actual live shows are the only thing that wasn't messed with. They re_recorded everything but those drums and vocals of Peter's.. He is a great drummer hands down...
And when will we have Liquid Tension Experiment 3?!
Got this notification while trying to figure out the Dance of Eternity on drums.
I'm so glad you talked about KISS. They're my favourite band along with DREAM THEATER and IRON MAIDEN
Hey Mike!! Maybe you could show us your sound system where you listen all of this great music too!
Lovin these episodes!
Leprous yes!!! Congregation is my favorite but Coal is also great!
Leprous doesn't have a bad album or a bad song. With them it's either good, or great, or amazing.
Baard Kolstadt didn't play on Coal. Tobias Ørnes Andersen did, who also played on the Ihsahn solo records (since Eremita) and has an interesting new project, Aiming For Enrike.
Never thought about mikael akerfelt singing epitaph before... And now i think i can't die before seeing this happening hahaha
Where is the latest from GALACTIC COWBOYS
fun record. 1 that I do own on Vinyl myself.
Showing your age with the "how many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie..." there M.P. Your vinyl collection similar to mine. Insert KING'S X after the other two Kings... (before the KISS box).
GENESIS!

Why no Iron Maiden record in the collection? I've heard from all the guys in Dream Theater and also Mike Portnoy that they've been a massive influence on him & the band at large. I'm appalled.
Mike you’re missing the Aquarius remaster. Their debut and best one!
Def not the best
Aquarius is also their best one for me. With The Mountain.
@@ryanbazail it's definitely there most sort of typical prog sounding, my opinion is that as an overall package it's my fav but there are songs off the mountain and affinity that are better.
@@black1blade74 that's fair I just always felt visions was the better version of that style tbh and ofc the mountain imo is the best overall album
Transatlantic in order of importance of the bands:
1. Marillion
2. The Flower kings
3. Dream Theater
4. Spocks Beard / Neal Morse
One of these days the world at large will recognize the amazingness that is Jellyfish.
1 can hope.
The drumming in 7 on the later half of cinema show is my favorite drum writing of all time. That first fill is like Ringo playing in 7. So cool
"Starless aaaaaannndddd... BIBLE BLAAAAAACKKK..." Powerful. Beautiful and creepy at the same time. re: JT, I thought for 20 years Barriemore Barlow was the drummer for Aqualung, kinda like I thought Tommy A was the drummer on Diary of a Madman.
Mike, do you have The B'zz album? Not everyone knew them. Steve Riley was on drums, solid Chicago-area band with Tom Holland on vocals. Artwork by Eraldo Carugati, who did the covers for Kiss' solo albums and Rush's Fly By Night.
This is better than any tv program today.
How many times are you listen of these vinyls?? Seems so new!!! And witch brand for turntable you suggest?? Technics,Project,Dual, Numark or something extreme??
Hello, ... I'd like to ask you a quick opinion ... Have you heard the new Beatles - white album in ATMOS surround mix? ... IF so, .. what did you think? ... if not ... will you have a listen? ..
Also, as a huge music fan, ...what sort of Audio gear do you have? .. I'd love to get a sneak peak, as you are such an avid fan / professional of music.
Thank you!!!

Love these. Movie collection next?
