- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Somara, whose family hails from Trinidad, has grown up as a first generation American. The complexities of her own experience informed her understanding of the even wider complexities beyond her own.
Somara has always been passionate about the weather. Throughout college she conducted research funded by NASA, NOAA and participated in a field study in China. She has also interned with WUSA CBS 9 in Washington, DC, WGCL CBS Atlanta, and The Weather Channel. She has recently graduated from Penn State University with a major in Meteorology and Minors in Energy Business and Finance as well as Mandarin Chinese. Outside of weather, she loves helping others any way she can. She also has a passion for spreading the beauty of culture and hopes by speaking on the topic of cultural diversity that new bridges and connections will be made throughout mankind.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Rings very true! Especially the part about siblings feeling different about their identities.
I watch you ever morning on NBC4, Washington DC. This morning I decided to do a search and came across you Presentation of TEDx Talk. I am a Trini to De Bone. I migrated to this country some 30 years ago. My daughter is an American, she is submerged in the Trinidadian/West Indian culture, loves any musical genre, Caribbean, the foods are her speciality, and is an all-in member of s Steel Band Organization, she travels and performs playing the Tenor. My daughter is a Freshman at DSU, Delaware, a member of DSU Caribbean Student Association, CSA, and identifies herself as a Trinidadian born in America. I am definitely going to send her this Video, it is inspirational and encouraging. Thank you. P.S. NBC4, Washington DC, is the channel that wakes me up in the morning and takes me to bed at nights. Continue to do you, you are doing a wonderful job.
Discovered this RUclips channel and your article in an old issue of Black Enterprise. So glad I picked up the magazine to read it, and find your story. I'm also a first generation Carib descent - parents from Jamaica, and I was born here - so I can totally relate and empathize. I will make certain to share with friends. God Bless, and keep up the great work!
my parents moved from Honduras to NY in the 1980´s, I moved from the U.S. to Roatan, Honduras in 2011. Not your average first generation American story but I´m so glad I got to experience the village that saw my parents grow up. This move helped me to understand my parents more.

will do thank you serenity!
You are most welcome :)

Sorry to tell you this but the pencil with the knife pic is not a Caribbean thing. As an African American born poor in the south decades ago, I immediately knew exactly what it meant because that’s exactly how my family and friends sharpened their pencils back in the day and some folks in my family still do.
What if i have 3 cultures in me and my journey for identity has been split even more
First Generation Indian-American here!!!
