    The Mercury 7 from SoCal based builder Meris is a digital reverb said to be born from a love of the Blade Runner soundtrack. But it is so much more than that. Today on Secret Weapons we sink into the lush, expansive ether of the Mercury 7. Whether it’s the tight and quick Ultraplate, perfect for rhythm guitar parts and allowing punchy delay lines to take from and center, or the almost angelic Cathedra mode, the Mercury 7 has proven itself to be a modern classic. It’s ability to handle wild pitch shifting and stacked delays without faltering is a testament to design and it’s usefulness in nearly any context surely solidifies it’s place on my board for the long run.

    Of course, the Mercury 7 is divine and I will have one. However, just another word if I may. It’s so refreshing to hear someone playing music on the guitar and not just playing the guitar.

    The Ultraplate algo on the M7 is one of the best plate reverbs ever for recording vocals. Seriously. The only other pedal that I'd recommend as an alternative is the Catalinbread Talisman.

    GREAT Review! Love how you described it. I also think more reviews should include critiques. It is important for users and the pedal developers to hear. I'm a reverb junkie and this is one of the best out there.

    So glad you mentioned running Thermae in front of it, I have a mercury7 on the way and I was wondering how they would work together. Thanks for a very helpful review!

    Marris must be selling a lot of units as their website says “out of stock”. Good for them. Looking to pick up a pair of 500 series.

    Wow that pairing with the Dark World is beautiful. I've been pairing it with my old Afterneath and it just makes those cascading delay lines even more massive.

    Beautifully done! My only super minor, don't take this as a real criticism, but yeah, "idea" for the videos would be to outline where the knobs are at. It'll move the videos a little more into the "education" space which you may or may not want to go towards but I feel like everyone is drooling for. Plus, I know that just takes freaking more time and memory to write things down during playing 😭

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  5 лет назад +3

      Daniel Flynn that’s a totally fair request. I’ve thought about it before but, weirdly, I play knob placement pretty fast and loose so I’m not sure how accurate of useful it would be.

    So this pedal sounds remarkable! I have some questions about the pedal. Can you set presets on this pedal and can it be controlled via MIDI controller? I see you have the MC6 on your board and was wondering if it can be controlled by something like that?

    • @tomwind666
      @tomwind666 5 лет назад +1

      There are up to 16 internal presets on this pedal, and yes they can be accessed via a MIDI controller. I personally use mine with a Disaster Area DMC-3XL Gen. 3

    Can you suggest a good Shimmer setting on Mercury 7 ? I sold my Immerse because I plan to only have one reverb on my board. But cannot find the right mix and shimmering effect easily on the Mercury 7 compared when I owned the Immerse.

  • @nathanricker1

    Excellent review man! Mines on the way! Very excited. Quick question. I’ve been wrecking my head over my pedal order as, coincidentally, I have a dark world on the way as well and also have an echosystem and a thermae. In terms of those four are you running the thermae into the dark world, then into the echosystem and lastly the mercury7. That’s what I was thinking I’d do. My only qualm might be running the dark world into the echosystem. Anyway. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    What pickups are in this guitar? Not usually a big humbucker person, but these sound full without getting muddy or lacking clarity.

    Do you use the factory patches mostly or do you use your own settings?can you possibly share some of your settings?I have this pedal but I am having troubles dialing in settings.

    • @markjohnstonofficial
      @markjohnstonofficial  2 года назад +2

      I don’t use any of the stock presets. My advice for dialing your sound is to set the “main” parameters as simple as possible (pretty much all knobs at noon with no modulation) and then spend time with each individual secondary parameter to find what you like.

    • @MrCowfood
      @MrCowfood 5 лет назад

      Simple, if you dont have a solid reverb or need that get the mercury, otherwise, darkworld as it is a coloring reverb, a lofi dark beast but lacking a stereo field. All depends on your needs and such.. Ideally get both. For me its darkworld as I have a gfi specular tempus to achieve the stereo field with subtle coloring from its algos.
