Salamat kaau sir sa imong tutorial.. Daghan kaau q nahibal an sa pag bonsai.. Gasugod na pud q ug himo ug bunsai tungod sa imong mga tut. Vid... More power and god bless u always...
Greeting Sir ...I love this tree....it once again (to me) looks like a woman sitting on that rock....the shape and form of the trunk is lovely..I hope it is blooming the next time you do a video on this Tamarind Tree.....One day I will try root over rock again...I tried it on a Ficus Benjamin thankfully it was a cutting from the original tree that I still have....I will try another cutting..I do not want to lose my tree....
hey bonsai, for a root over rock is it better to use and older tree that's mostly developed or a younger tree that still has a long way to be "finished"?
you can use an older tree but it will need more care when you plant it on rock. make Sure it is kept moist and in the shade for long say 3 to 5 months. ensure that the tip of the roots are into soil and the exposed roots are wrapped with cloth together with the rock,
if i understand it correct: get a stone. put the roots above the stone. put wet soil around everything, wrap it in plastic. now the roots can still grow and become strong on the rock and they will grow down where they eventually meet another soil which then feeds the tree. is that correct?
+ali fadhil the most appropriate design is to let the it cascade to its existing direction (to the left and down) so it will reflect a tree growing on a cliff.
George Tourloukis That technique is just one of the many techniques on planting on rock and I learned this a long time ago in our bonsai Club and that is the best source of learning next to a bonsai school. My recommendation is to join a FREE bonsai school in Facebook. search Neli Stoyanova "Bonsai School" message her that you are interested to learn bonsai, then she'll let you navigate to the Lesson index, you can even ask her specific lesson "Root Over Rock" planting.
At first - it's an awesome Rock! - Looks like lavastone or a part of a coral reef - we had a small coal stove and there were sometimes "stones" in, who looked like your stone, but anyway it's looking great! - But I wouldn't concrete the stand ... I would drill some holes in - like 4 and put metal rods in those holes! - Or one hole in the middle with a metal rod to fix it with a nut and a thread oh the metal rod on a ground-plate. That would look more better. Hey, no one had cultivate a white flowering tulpis magnolia - maybe that would be a competition for you ;-). I have startet to create Bonsais too - one ginseng ficus and a normal ficus - But against the wireing, I started to fix the branches by thicker bands, to prevent the branches against constrictions by the wires - it's more aesthetic and natural if the tree growes without any constrictions. The bands are a lil flexible to let the branches grow thicker, but in the fixed position - but it's only a Try so far, will take some years to see the result(s). Thank you for your videos so far - mostly there're How2's you have to buy - so I really looking forward for your videos!
+Stefan André Makefire (ReaperKing) Thanks for contributing ideas Andre. Yes i've seen rock planting where you don't see any cement use as stands. And its exactly the way you did it, Metal rods and nuts, and they look awesome. I've seen also rocks assembled using cement as tall as 4 feet and with trees cascading along its sides, these are landscape style and they just disassemble them after the show.really amazing.
bipin kumar My soil preps are very simple due to limited options. When rooting materials my major concern is aeration that is why I use sieve coarse river sand 1/4 to 1/8 inch. When the materials have grown shoots long enough and ready to be expose to sunshine, I top up the soil with cocopeat or vermicast or compost as organic fertilizer and as mulch because sand gets pretty hot when expose to sun. My soil is nothing special, no acadama, no turface etc...but had I access to them..I will use them because they have specific advantages. When materials are established the next concern is fertilization so again compost on top and other organics but the bottom is always the coarse river sand as drainage layer.
Bonsai Iligan Thanks for your prompt reply. I live at Patna, India and for me at such small town it would be really challenging to arrange specialized materials. Right now I am having 8-10 different varieties of Bonsai or should I say Bonsai looking plants as I haven't done any Bonsai kind of treatment with them. They range in the age group of 4-7 years mostly. Your videos have really inspired me to give them right kind of treatment. so basically i think I need to repot them with careful working which would include treatment to roots, wiring- giving them right direction & shape, pruning, tampering etc. We do although have four climates but majorly its hot and humid climate, like right now its hot and humid- don't think best time to tamper them. From September it would be little colder. Before that I think I should have fair kin of idea to what to do with each of my bonsai and must collect required materials. For soil I would follow your practice to keep it simple. In this regard first query I have, in one of your videos - 'Bonsai Tutorials for Beginners: How to Pot Up a Newly Collected Material' you used river coarse as soil, but river coarse are like fine stones with no nutritional source for plant, how it will grow into it. Secondly, would be prudent to use mixture of river corase, organic compost or vermin compost (I can easily get both) and garden soil. If that so what can be ideal proportion. Although, I inquired and found I can order soil conditioners online and get it. After seeing your videos, I realize the biggest problem of my pants has been drainge and soil. I can see my plants are in like stones as garden soils have become too hard in absence of drainage. Love to hear from you more. Once again gratitude for your kind guidance.
Yes drainage is the most important thing in containerized gardening, much more with bonsai. And yes coarse river sand has no nutrients so you have to fertilize your bonsais regularly. You are right to mix organics with your coarse river sand when repotting plants which have establish roots already. But I do not mix anything when I am rooting newly collected materials cause any organics can still clogged the drains. When the rooted materials are strong enough to be brought to the sun I top up the soil with compost and other mulch because sand can heat up. You are right though to mix organics with your coarse sand. Ensure no chemical based fertilizers cause it can burn trimmed roots.
Bonsai Iligan Thanks again, really appreciated. can you please share your email id, I will share photos of my collection to get your more advice. Regards.
plant in a small pot. yes you can miniaturized those trees but they could not technically be called bonsai. you need species which can proportion itself to be tree looking example shrunk leaf size. ·
Thank you Sir for the nice video, it was very inspiring!!! I have a ficus microcarpa cascade and want to plant it over a rock like you showed on the video. 3 weeks ago I chopped off some small branches and did some carving work to round up the surface of the tree. Do you recommend to wait another year to heal up the wounds or can I continue the rockwork right away ? There was no leave loss :-) Here in France it is winter now ,the plant is held indoors and needs repotting anyway...thanks for the great work and answer!!!
+Philip Klar better if you let it recover from the stress. Bonsai should be concern first for the health of the plant and thus patience is a virtue. If your hands are really itchy, it helps if you have many plants to work on.

Hello MJ, not sure if you know yet but he passed away July of this year. My name is Maki, his son. I hope he will help to watch over and bless all of our bonsai's now! He will always continue to create beautiful life and art through his help in teaching all of his students for forever in time! I hope he will be a bonsai angel for us all now.... And he would be very happy greatful and proud for your helping his channel continue! Thank you both so much! I do not have green thumb, I live in FL and I suck at this art! But I am still learning so much and I will not give up! I think it is because of keeping in house is not enough light & outside has too much direct light and frys the leaves... I tend to over love/water them and cause root to decay :-(
