  • We celebrate our Independence Day on 6th Dec every year. It is a very big holiday in Finland and this year it was the 104th. We've had a troubled past with our neighbour Russia and this fact still lingers in the Finnish psyche. Anyway, we celebrated this year at my mother's boyfriend's house in Hämeenlinna. Raimo has a traditional old house and Vinod got to have a tour. Being from India, my husband is very interested in how people live in this harsh cold climate. You'll also get to see many Finnish dishes as the Independence Day would be incomplete without lots and lots of food :)

Just loved learning some history of Finland ,I was amazed at how similar your country's history is to mine (Ireland ) we too were coloniaed by England for nearly 800 year ,we are a small nation too ,and we fought what was then the biggest empire in the world ,eventually we gained 26 of our 32 counties back ,and it is looking more like we will eventually get them back too . We also have smoked salmon as a starter , Your mom's partner seems such a nice man ,and I loved his house , Annika has become so relaxed with we everyone, her outfit was so pretty 😉.Vinod seems less shy ,and he seems to be really enjoying your homeland . Watching your Finland videos really brings it home how much you gave up for Vinod , I think this trip will help him to understand what you left behind because you love him so much ,you were so brave to do it .
Sorry another long comment ,us Irish are very literate and we love the writing ,which is why we are known for our playrights and poets 😉 oh we also pick berries too and freeze them 😉 Happy Christmas to you all 🎄🎅🤶

Seconded. We share a very similar history with the Finns.
Can someone tell me the name of the Finnish independence film they’re watching? I would like to educate myself on the history, thanks 😊

I had absolutely no idea about Finland's turbulent history, what a wonderful lesson learnt from this video. Please pass on my thanks and appreciation to Ramo for allowing you to share this beautiful feast of traditional dishes with us, he did an amazing job! The home is beautiful and l loved all the chest freezers around the home for all their berries. I spotted a Scandinavian candle on the side board, they are lovely. Annika in the hair bow and navy dress, absolutely adorable 😍 Thankyou for sharing with us🙏

Cold, harsh climate countries forces people to work harder and to some extent may account for generally higher GDP around the north most parts of the world, it’s work or starve so I think makes a population very resilient too. Finland is possibly the only western country that has sought to end homelessness for good and has one of the best performing education system in the world for all (rich or poor) that I heard in Finland, private schools are practically banned because they don’t need to have them in the first place! Very interesting piece of history on Finland that most of us wouldn’t know that it was under Sweden for a long time. Love the cute cottage, some of the retro items like the radio and decor of all the houses in your vlog that stands out as fresh, modern, understated, minimalist Scandinavian or Nordic theme that the world seeks to copy through IKEA store around the world.
Happy Independence Day, it seems Anika has adapted well to the weather, lovely to see her cute winter outfits.

One of my favourite words in Finnish is ‘Sisu’. I understand it means extraordinary courage in circumstances of no hope? & essentially defines what it means to be Finnish Finland 🇫🇮 ?
I love 💖learning the history, your traditional food & your explanation of family. I hope brings greater insight& understanding to aspects of ‘Western’ culture often misrepresented as ‘bad’ without full picture, every culture has light & dark to it…just because something is different & doesn’t meet the typical idea of something like family, it’s no less beautiful. Family is so much bigger than a mental concept/idea, imo family is a certain feeling of mutual appreciation, harmony & connection to those around you, the video illustrates this so beautifully✨…Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam✨🎄

Two years before I read an article titled 'White Death' which talked about the Finnish resistance against the Soviets. As a student of War and International Relations, I would say that the great "Winter War", of 1939 serves as one of the excellent examples of people's resistance to foreign aggression. That war showed to the world what determined people can do in desperate times. Waging war in extreme winter is tough. It is worth understanding the principle of warfare that "An angry person can be brought back to delight, vexation can be succeeded by content, but a dead person cannot be brought back to life, a nation ruined in war cannot be rebuilt. It is better not to fight..... may the souls of those who fought and died in that war rest in peace.

Dear Johanna, thank you for another amazing video on Finnish history, traditions and family, which is everything. Only a great love can take us all away from what is dear to us, and family is. I am sure Vinod understands what a sacrifice it is for you to be so far away from home, and if he doesn't, he better after this trip😁 Amazing how Annika has blossomed in the fold of her Finnish family, she does belong, and she even seens more relaxed and quiet. Vinod also seens to be so chilled and excited about Finland. I love it. You of course, look beautifully happy as does everybody else including your dear mom and her dear partner, which seems like a fantastic person. I wonder if one day it would be possible for you all, including Vinod's parents, to live in Finland if only partially. The weather may be a big issue in Winter, but you do have a Summer, thing is, it probably feels (temp wise) like Winter to them! ☺️Wishing you a great a blessed Holiday Season🙏❤️🎄🙌

You also get the feeling that the Finnish people are so hospitable and. family is so important. Congratulations on Independence Day. I can see that the Finnish are very proud of their heritage and the sacrifices they made to get to where they are now. Thank you Johanna for giving us more insight into the food, history and culture of the Finnish people.❤❤ A pure joy to watch!!😍

Even in Finland, Raimo would be considered a particularly jolly, welcoming person as he comes from a part of Finland (karelia, which we lost to russia after the war) where that is a very common trait! I dont like it when many people often assume that we Finns dont care about family or aren’t welcoming towards people, so I’m really happy you saw the opposite in this video ❤️ we might prefer our alone time and dont necessarily react well to unplanned, spontaneous visits, but especially during the holiday season we always get together with our loved ones 🥰

Once again your BIG family get together stole my heart. People together make a family happy. Family shouldn't be related to blood relation only. Concept of partner too gaining ground and acceptability in India as well slowly but surely with rise in prosperity. It was a taboo in India even 10-15 years back. But gradually gaining acceptability in a way that Indian people now learning what west has already accomplished of not being judgmental about any relationship of any kind. Thankfully Indian women are leading this march to unshackle this social taboo inserted deep inside Indian culture. After all, its human which is precious. Delighted to meet your larger family of three generation. Anikka is obviously representing the third generation of your family tree. God bless you, anika and all your family members.

So nice!! Love your family vlogs! In Germany its very common to have blended families. And thats beautiful. Why not get a second chance if the previous relationship didn't work out? It's so much better than trying to fix and force things, that have been broken for years. That's a very unhealthy thing to do. But unfortunately a lot of countries or rather societies won't allow to remarry or to simply be in a new relationship. I really hope that this kind of mindset changes some day.

I think it’s really important to have the right to divorce, and not get ostracised from society because of it! I do think maybe that in the West people divorce too easily (though i never know someone else’s situation!) but to not have the option is not good either. Sometimes thats the only option.

Love this Finnish series. Loved Raimo. He seemed a smart man. I could relate to Raimo's sentiments on account of Russia. Freedom should be granted but most of the time it's conquered. Russians went everywhere. Loved the narration over Finnish independence. Glad to hear that your great grandpa was one of first row men during independence. You must be proud of your family tree.

Last night the Russia hokey team wore the CCCP uniforms for the channel 1 Cup.
The Finish team beat them.So much symbolism in this!
You go girl! I like your presentation!

"Marriage" the way we know it traditionally is a man-made social construct. The idea was to provide security and it was hoped happiness would accompany that security. Unfortunately things do not always work out the way society dictates. Ultimately it is important that everybody be happy in whatever way it works for them and as long as nobody else is hurt, that is perfectly fine. Enjoying your Finnish holiday. Have fun.

Didn't know that my father's first mobile phone ( during 2003-4) Nokia was originated from Finland😅.
Agriculture based economy doesn't make people prosperous, India understood it very late (in 1991 economic reforms started)

It's a wonderful vlog today , i likes to know about other nations life and history , i used to hear that people in Europe generally not appreciate the family or the relationships, they are drunkers all the time and cheating there partners, and many other rumours , i see how you love to your child, husband and how you miss to your family , not everything media show is a truth
