We too updated a friends small porch, used the same Ikea tiles, but we actually grouted them to make them permanent and more custom... they turned out fabulous.
Do you have any videos or pictures posted anywhere? I'd love to see (but only if you don't mind sharing) as I was thinking about doing the same for my mum's!
@@tammyshui 😪, I wish but I don't. My husband, friends and family are constantly telling me that I need to start a channel or atleast do before and after pictures of my DIY's. I'll get excited and think "I should" but then reality hits... I don't like being on camera, I'm a grown woman with a voice of a child 😅. So then I say ok fine I'll just do before and after pics, but then I get started on the projects and by the time I've realized that I forgot to do before/after, I'm already done with the project. When I start something and get in the zone, I just can't get out of it until I'm done.
@@SuchaCaligrrl ah that's alright! I will try it out and hope to get it right 😆 did you grout just one direction to create the illusion of continuous planks? Because my only gripe with the ikea tiles is that they look like: tiles. Haha!
I understand the feeling of being in the zone and completely forgetting to take pictures! My friends and I who are artists usually "hire" each other to get close up shots and different angles of the work being painted etc. You can get whoever is at home with you to take casual short videos and photos to start off, it doesn't have to be formal/perfect. I hope if you do end up documenting your process you'll find joy in it. Documentation is a craft in itself and I'm sure as a creative person you'll make sth unique out of it 😊
@@tammyshui Thank you, I was thinking of getting my feet wet with maybe doing some shorts... nothing fancy but good enough to just give people ideas and help spark some creativity. Right now, I'm working on an 18th century epothercary cabinet that was gifted to me, it will go in my kitchen... I was inspired by the movie "Pracrical Magic" with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, I love that home (it's just a shell, but can easily become a reality) the kitchen is to die for (atleast to me) but guess what... I also failed to document any of my work 🤦♀️, I get too passionate and excited about my projects and ideas that nothing else is important... but I'm working on it.
So to answer your question, we did place the tiles horizontally first, but because they are short (not your typical long "wood" planks) just made it look weird and very fake (if that makes sense), we tried to stagger them but still just didn't look aesthetically right, I think it was also the color of the grout that made each square stand out even more, we thought of matching the grout color to the tiles but then it would blend everything in making the tiles blend in more, but they didn't want that so we changed it back to the original layout and yes they tend to look like tiles but they looked much better than laying them down horizontal. We even played with them by seeing if we could do a chevron look, but that was taking too long, we might as well have laid down real tile... hope I've been some help.
If it were my home, I soooo would have done them horizontally, little quirks like that don't bother me at all.
This looks great! Thinking of doing something similar with my terrace. Do you have any issues with drainage / water collecting under the flooring? I’m a little nervous about that.
Thank you! And no not at all, we had no issues with water collecting. Even on days with heavy rain all day it just drained right thru. No puddles.

I just bought according to the size of roof. 1 tile is 1sq ft..and each box has 6 tiles if I remember correctly
